Chapter 9: A Surprise Encounter
The drama from Mike eventually wore off. No one was talking to him except for Tyler and Eric. As childish as Tyler is, he knew Mike messed up but wanted to be there for his friend. Eric as well. The girls didn't condone the behavior of course, but as for Ava and Bella, deep down they admired Tyler and Eric for sticking by their friend to help him. Turns out Mike has a problem with rejection, stemming from always getting what he wanted in life. He was getting help, which is what was important. He stayed out of the girl's way, and they stayed out of his.
Another couple of weeks passed by and it seemed Valentines Day was coming up out of nowhere.
"Even in high school this damned day is still celebrated with stupid cards," Bella mumbled as she made her way through the 'Craptine Aisle' as Ava put it. Ava shared in Bella's misery.
"I've never had to do this myself, but ughhhh," Ava shivered dramatically, "this is too much." Ava gestured to all the stuff in the aisle. It made Bella laugh.
The dreaded day was Tuesday next week. Which found the girls in a small shop in Seattle Friday afternoon. They arrived a little early before they were to go to work, so they decided to walk around after they dropped their stuff off in their hotel room.
"They're your friends too, look with me, share my misery dear sister," Bella said as she looped her arm through Ava's.
"Ughh.. I'm gonna just go to the restroom and throw up my lunch," Ava said trying to get her arm out of Bella's.
Bella latched tighter. "Nope, you're staying. Come on, the sooner we find something for our friends, the sooner we can get to work, and you can take it out on the poor computer and wires you love so much," Bella finished.
After a few seconds, Ava grabbed a bag of candy and a box of cards and shoved them at Bella. Bella just chuckled.
"Well," Bella said looking over the stuff and decided it was good enough, she began walking to the counter with Ava, "I've never met anyone who hated the day more than me."
"You have a long life to live Isa, there will be more," Ava sighed looking outside. It was starting to snow heavier. "We better hurry to work, it's coming down harder now."
"Okay, okay," Bella said as she paid the clerk and grabbed her stuff.
"You girls be careful out there," the clerk said. She was a nice older lady.
"Thank you!" the girls replied and bundled up and made their way to the publishing building.
"Shit shit shit," Ava mumbled half dragging Bella and Bella half dragging her to the building. Jack the Security Guard saw them and rushed to the bottom of the stairs holding the handle.
"You girls are nuts, I would've called in," he said grabbing Ava's hand and pulling them up the stairs.
"Then why are you here," Ava said cheekily.
Jack just looked at her and smirked. "I don't like to call in. Especially when I live just a few blocks away in an apartment."
Ava smiled at him, "I don't call in."
Bella could've sworn Jack blushed, but it might've been because it was cold as hell too.
"In you go ladies, have a good evening. I'll be leaving at seven, so make sure you lock the building when you leave." He finished closing the door. The girls gave him a thumbs up and made their way to the elevators.
"I think he likes you," Bella said pressing the 'up' button.
Ava chuckled. "As if, the guy is in his twenties. What would he want with a seventeen-year-old?"
"A seventeen-year-old who acts older than she is. You don't know how beautiful you are Ava." Bella replied as they both made their way in.
"You look the same as me sister dearest. Except for the eyes and your hair is lighter. But honestly, I'm not interested in a romantic relationship right now." Ava told Bella.
The elevator got to the sixth floor and the girls made their way to Ava's office.
"I understand that. Neither do I. But there's nothing wrong with looking is there. Jack is pretty cute," Bella said as they dropped their items on the desk.
Ava looked at Bella shocked. "Seems we've made some steps."
"I'm working on it, you and dad have helped so much. Jake too." Bella said putting away her stuff.
"I've got to meet this Jake one day," Ava went and looked outside the office, "hello? Hello?"
"Are we the only ones today?" Bella asked, taking off her jacket.
"Let's see," Ava said getting her walkie-talkie and turning it on. "Jack, come in."
A few seconds later, "Go ahead Ava."
"Are Isa and I the only ones today?"
"I should've told you, yes. The others went home early because of the expected storm. You both are the only ones in the building, did you receive instructions from your supervisor?"
Ava looked quickly on her desk and noticed a note,
Ava,
There's a storm coming, everyone else left for the weekend, if you make it, instructions are in your email. Call Mrs. Cross if anything else comes up.
Be safe,
Mr. Perry
"Yeah Jack, he left me a note, thanks. Ava out."
"10-4" Jake responded and there was silence.
"Alright, I guess it's just us. Want me to walk you or no," Ava said taking out her laptop from the drawer.
"Na, I'll go see what I've got. I'll get you on the walkie once I'm at my desk." Bella said grabbing her Jacket and bag and heading out to the elevator to go to the 8th floor which was the manuscript floor.
"Alright," Ava said logging into her computer.
She saw her email and said all she needed to do was go through and update the security patches in the mainframe. Easy enough but will take all weekend.
"Slow slow slow," Ava mumbled as she grabbed her computer, USB cables and walkie and headed out to the mainframe office.
"Ava I'm here. I've got five piles to go through. You okay?" Bella said through the walkie.
"I'm good. I have to update the security patches in the mainframe. Easy, but slow as hell. It's going to take all weekend.
"Well, it's five now, call me at nine and we'll see where we're at." Bella finished.
"Sounds good," Ava replied.
"Okay, let's see," Ava mumbled getting her computer and logging into the security system. So mainframe one, USB, sub-line USB," she plugged in the required cables to her computer and hooked it to the mainframe outlets in the first panel. "Okay, update security patch number one." While the update was going on, Ava walked and checked each panel to make sure there were no red flashes.
Bella was having fun as opposed to Ava. Her job wasn't nearly as difficult. Reading is simple. Ava tried showing Bella the computer stuff and Bella just shoved the computer away from her and blew raspberries which made Ava laugh.
"Alright, we've got a final copy to go to the boss, so this one first," Bella mumbled unclipping the papers and getting comfortable to read it.
Suddenly there was a loud bang which made Bella jump.
"What the hell," Bella said getting up to look out the window. The snow was really coming down. "Practically a blizzard, I wonder if the wind made that sound," she continued to look but didn't see anything.
Bella went to sit back down and about thirty minutes went by when she started smelling something awful. She got on the walkie, "Ava? Ava, can you smell something," Bella released the button and waited. And waited, nothing.
"Ava?" Bella asked again. She looked at the clock and it read 19:45. "Jack is gone already. "Well let's see," Bella got her jacket and put it on and made her way to the elevator.
When the elevator started coming up on the sixth floor there was smoke starting to come in, "what the hell! Ava!" Bella yelled as the doors opened. Smoke completely filled the office. "Ava!" Bella yelled again, trying to make her way through the office. She started coughing and pulled her shirt up in front of her nose.
Bella was able to make it to Ava's office, but she wasn't in there. "Ava!" Bella yelled again through coughing. She found the office phone and picked it up. There was no signal. "Communications are out, shit where's my phone?" Bella grumbled searching her pockets. She had left it on her desk. "Shit." Bella bolted out of the office and made her way to the mainframe room.
"A fucking fire! Ava!" Bella said coming up on the room, there was more smoke than fire, but the fire was starting to get out of control. "Ava! Where are you?" Bella yelled trying to see in the smoke. As she came to the door she tripped and fell on the floor.
"What the hell," Bella mumbled and turned to see what she had tripped over. "Ava!" Bella said as she crawled to her.
Bella shook her. "Ava," Bella started tearing up. Bella touched Ava's had to move her hair and felt something wet. Blood. Ava was bleeding from her head but Bella couldn't tell where. "Ava, come on," Bella tried to drag her, but it seemed Ava was stuck. Half her body was still in the mainframe room. Bella went to see and the fire was starting to come their way, the panels were on fire! Bella looked up and saw the wires sparking that led through the ceiling outside. Bella noted the tower must've fallen and that's what the huge sound was. She shook her head and coughed and looked and saw that one of the panels had fallen on Ava's legs.
'She must've tried to get out and the panel fell and she bumped her head on the door frame,' Bella though as she tried to move the panel off. It sparked the entire time. And it was hot has hell. Bella took off her jacket and wrapped her hands in it and pushed the panel as hard as she could, she almost got it off when she heard something crack.
"Shit, her feet, Ava wake up!" Bella yelled as she was able to push the panel off. It looked like Ava had some burns on her legs from the hot panel, "come on sis," Bella cried as she tried to drag Ava to the elevators.
As much as Bella pushed the buttons the elevators stopped.
Just then the emergency water sprinklers turned on.
"Well thanks for that," Bella mumbled as she located the emergency stairs and dragged Ava with her. Ava started moaning.
"Ava. Ava, come on, it's Isa. Can you understand me?" Bella asked, shaking Ava. Just then Ava's phone fell out of her jacket pocket. "Thank God for small favors," Bella said as she got Ava's phone and dialed 911.
"Isa?" Ava mumbled and coughed.
"Yeah, hold on Ava, I'm getting help." Bella replied. Water started coming through the door and Bella tried to drag Ava up one step higher to avoid getting wet.
"911 what's your emergency?"
"I need help! I'm at the Seattle Core Publishing building. Me and my sister are caught in the building and there's a fire!" Bella said coughing.
"We've received the alert when the emergency system came on. Help is already on the way, are either of you injured?" the operator said.
"My sister is bleeding from her head, I don't know where, I can't see, there's too much smoke and her legs are burned. She was trapped under a security panel," Bella said coughing more.
"Where are you located so rescue crews can get to you?"
"We're in the stairwell, but I don't know what side of the building," Bella said coughing again. She looked at Ava and she didn't look good. "Please hurry, my sister, she's, she's not doing well," Bella started crying.
"I just got word that the crew is there, they're searching for you, please stay on the line until they get to you," the operator said typing on the computer.
"There's so much smoke," Bella mumbled starting to get sleepy.
"Ms. please try and stay conscious. Talk to me, how old are you and your sister?"
"Seve…Seventeen," Bella said trying to keep her eyes open.
"Isa," Ava mumbled again.
"I'm trying….Ava.." Bella coughed more.
"I got them!" came a voice from the stairs. "Two females," the voice was louder.
Bella could barely make out figures coming up the stairs, "help, is here," she said.
"Okay, come on you two," said one of the men.
"Careful, this one has second degree burns on both legs and the side of her head is bleeding," another one said.
Bella blacked out as she was carried down the stairs.
"Where is she?" Bella asked as she tried to get out of bed.
"Easy miss, she's down the hall. She's not awake," the nurse said as she tried to keep Bella in her bed.
It was Sunday, two days after the incident. The girls were in the hospital. Turns out Bella was right in thinking the communications tower was blown over by the blizzard which sparked the wires that were attached in the mainframe room which caused the panels to go out. When the crews went to access the damage they found Ava's computer, which showed she was trying to stop the outage and would've succeeded if one of the panels hadn't blown which caused the fire and knocked over the other panel that had fallen on her before she could get out.
"I don't care, I need to see her," Bella yelled as she got out of her bed and left the room and walked down the hall, she peeked into all the rooms until she found the one, she wanted.
Bella gulped. She saw Ava. She was hooked up to machines, legs were wrapped, and she noticed her left foot was in a cast, Bella remembered the snap, she cringed. And Ava's head was wrapped. "Ava," Bella whispered as she pulled up a chair and sat next to her.
Bella started to cry, "you…. You…. Ava," Bella silently cried holding Ava's hand.
"Isabella," came a voice.
Bella stiffened. 'No…. not that voice, no.' Bella continued to think as she slowly turned her head.
"You." Bella narrowed her eyes.
"Ahem, yes. Bella. I'm your sister's doctor. Imagine my surprise when I saw her, for a moment I thought she was you." The man said slowly approaching. "Small world." He smiled.
"It's Isabella to you, I want her to have another doctor," Bella said getting up and standing in front of Ava. "I don't want anything to do with you, or your family. And I'm sure my father will say the same."
The man's smile faltered. "I…,"
"And don't you dare say you understand how I feel. No, you don't." Bella said angrily.
"Bell… Isabella, I…. I can help her. She has a heart condition, doesn't she?" the man asked concerned.
Bella didn't respond, she just continued to look at the man.
"I can help. Please, let me help her. It's the least I can do… for…. for," the man didn't finish.
"Hurting me? Leaving me? You and your family left me alone!" Bella yelled.
"Bella? Bella, I heard you down the hall, why aren't you in your room, what's wrong? Is it Ava?" came Charlie's voice from the hallway. He was shocked at the man standing in the room. Once word got to Charlie that his girls were in the hospital, he got an immediate flight from where he was and made it in record time. Being police chief had its perks when trying to get a flight.
"Hello Charlie," the man said after turning around.
"Dr…Dr. Cullen." Charlie stammered.
"Please Charlie, call me Carlisle. I'm the doctor that was assigned to Ms. Wilson." Carlisle said.
"Isa, dad?" mumbled Ava.
"Ava!" both Charlie and Bella said as they rushed to her bedside.
"What's going on? I heard yelling." She mumbled.
"Well, um, there's," she glanced at Carlisle, "it's nothing," Bella stammered, and Charlie elbowed her.
"I think the problem is me, Ms. Wilson," Carlisle said from behind Bella and Charlie. Both Bella and Charlie moved to where Ava could see Carlisle.
"And who are you?" asked Ava blinking her eyes to remove the sleepiness. Her voice was stiff. She needed water.
"Dr. Carlisle Cullen, at your service. I'm the doctor assigned to you Ms. Wilson." Carlisle said sadly smiling knowing Bella and Charlie were giving him glares. It didn't go unnoticed by Ava how Bella and Charlie were looking at him.
"Carlisle Cullen, as in," she glanced at Bella, "Edward Cullen's father?"
Carlisle looked crestfallen, "yes," he replied.
It only took a moment for Ava. "Get out."
