He knew it was trouble with Sonny and Bernie butting heads, and Sonny wanted to show he was tough, but he figured Sonny joked about taking on the role as coach.
Sonny already had enough on his plate.
He didn't need this to add to it.
Corso finished up his list of things to be done, once they gained access to the records from Akillian, and knew the victims of the disaster there.
Corso really wished Sonny would tell him why he was so adamant about it.
Had to be about his missing wife. She was probably there during the disaster.
No one knew what caused it, the only thing that was certain was that the magnitude of the explosion had been so strong it had shifted the planet's climate from moderate to a permanent ice age.
The stuff he had read was rather bleak.
The amount of lives lost was massive.
He hoped for once Technoid would succeed in finding the culprit.
They needed to be brought to justice.
But right now, his biggest worry was Sonny's plan to coach their football team.
That was going to be difficult.
The team had immunity on the pitch and the wardrobe, but nowhere else.
And their coach didn't count, so he was in even more danger.
Corso was about to leave his workstation, when his transmitter beeped.
It was Sonny.
"Get your track suit Corso. I want to test my team before we go into the qualifying rounds, and you're coming with me." He declared.
Corso bit the inside of his cheek.
There went his day off.
One of these days he had to tell Sonny he needed to stop getting himself involved in every dangerous situation.
Sonny also switched in a pair of trainers.
Once they arrived, the team was on the practice pitch, ready to go.
Sonny smiled as he turned to the players.
"Since Bernie decided to piss me off, I'll lead the training from now on. I used to play soccer, and I haven't forgotten my old tricks."Sonny said.
The players looked confused.
Stevens hesitantly raised his hand.
Sonny nodded.
"What is it?" He asked.
Stevens cleared his throat.
"With all due respect, but we're very close to the Cup. You sure you want to change our entire regiment NOW?" He asked.
Sonny smiled.
"Let's all just focus on getting this Team on the right track. Right now, we need to try and become a good Team without a Flux. We may not be ready for this Cup, but someday we will."Sonny said, before grabbing the ball, and spinning it on his finger.
"Now, let's see what you got."
Corso had to admit, he was impressed.
Looked like Sonny was also quite a good football player, doing several training exercises almost perfectly, followed by the rest of the team.
Soon, he switched to Team Based training, splitting everyone into groups, before starting a friendly match.
Corso was watching from the sideline, but it looked like they needed an extra goalie.
He really didn't want to get involved and put himself out there, but Sonny was already looking at him with a smile.
"We need an extra goalie. Let's see what a military man can do on the pitch. " He said.
Corso struggled to keep his mouth from falling open.
His military background was classified.
What else did Sonny know about his past?
He felt a chill down his spine.
He could know about… everything.
"I guess I can do that." Corso said, swallowing.
Sonny nodded.
Corso got himself to the net.
Hawkins threw him an extra pair of gloves, and he quickly put them on.
Sonny divided his players into teams.
Corso prepared himself, but he was jolted when Sonny gave his next order.
"It's getting mighty hot here, how about we ditch the long sleeves?"Sonny playfully ordered.
"And after this we take a nice long break to relax." Sonny assured them, getting ready to play ball.
Corso could see Sonny and his team pull their tops off.
It was… distracting, to say the least.
He had to focus on the goal.
At least he had other things to worry about now.
As the match started, Corso put a visor over his cybernetic eye for protection, as the ball came into play.
The ball shot out of the ground, up high.
They couldn't make those jumps without a Flux, but they sure tried.
Corso lost his train of thought when he heard Kate, one of his current team mates, call out.
Stevens broke through the defenses and was heading right for his goal.
Corso braced himself to block the shot.
Stevens moved fast, and Corso only had a split second before he took a shot.
Corso managed to get his hands on the ball, digging his feet into the ground.
He felt the gloves got hot, almost expecting them to catch fire, but no goal for Stevens.
Corso threw the ball back in play.
He reached midfield, before Sonny managed to steal it from Kate.
It was fun to see Kate work to get the ball, and Sonny managed to keep it just out of reach, while he looked where his teammates were.
Corso would have preferred to let up at this point, but he knew that would be unwise.
Sonny did this on purpose, and he had no idea who was being tested.
He could see Sonny out on the left wing, with a mischievous grin.
He had something planned.
But no one was prepared for what it was.
Sonny made a shot on goal so fast Corso could only watch it hit the corner of the net.
That was immensely hard, causing the net to glow red.
Sonny smirked as he looked at him.
"I thought you said you were rusty, Corso, not rusted to the ground." He joked.
Corso picked up the ball.
"And I thought that you were a scientist, not a pro footballer. Got any more surprises to show?" Corso asked.
Sonny kaughed.
"I'm full of them. I think I know what to do with the Team now." Sonny said.
"Especially if we're going against Tecnoid's Droids."
Corso made note of that little piece of information.
He knew about Tecnoids Football droids, that was classified information from a whole other front.
This one could be useful, though.
The Pirates had several droids in storage, which they didn't quite know what to do with.
Maybe Sonny had some ideas?
Sonny decided to end the training.
Corso gave the gloves back to Hawkins before he and Sonny headed back to the ship.
As he drove, he glanced at Sonny, who was lost in thought.
He did that a lot.
Corso just found it endearing.
And it just made him more worried about Tecnoid.
They would very likely figure out he was the Coach, and that wasn't good.
And knowing Sonny, he'd probably do something even more stupid and get himself caught.
He wondered if he should speak up or not, but Sonny cut him off.
"We need an extra spare for the midfield. I could stand in for Stevens, we both have blonde hair, and we are the same height. With the masks we wore, that could work." Sonny said.
Corso slammed on the brakes, confusing Sonny with his actions.
"No way in Hell! Do you have ANY idea how easy that makes it for Tecnoid to catch you!?" He shouted.
Sonny looked surprised at this outburst, before closing his eyes.
"It's okay. I can take responsibility for myself. It won't be your fault if it goes wrong. Just like it wasn't yours back then." Sonny silently said.
Corso felt like Sonny just tore open a deep wound as he looked away.
"I didn't read your files, don't worry." Sonny confessed.
Corso still felt his heart race.
Then how did he know?
He kept these things to himself.
It didn't anger Corso, however. It scared him.
He couldn't show Sonny that.
He was from Chissia, for fuck's sake.
"How the hell do you even know what happened? That's my secret. My cross to bear." Corso said, closing his eyes.
He said too much.
Sonny looked at him, more seriously than before.
"You don't have to bear it alone,"Sonny said.
"But if you ever want to talk to me, know that I won't judge."
Corso nodded.
"You promised me a month Sonny, is that still on?" He asked.
Sonny nodded.
"Of course it is. But I never said I wouldn't do some digging. And I have some nice sources." Sonny said.
Corso looked up, surprised.
"Stop beating around the bush, who told you? " He demanded to know.
Sonny just smiled at him.
"You did, Corso. For nights on end."
