The Original Love
Elena walked into her room and slammed the door shut. She was extremely pissed. This was the first time Stefan or Damon had left her alone since she had been kidnapped, and she could finally let out her rage. First of all, she was irritated that she was kidnapped in the first place. She could've killed the two idiot vampires who did it. The only thing that stopped her was the knowledge that it would break her cover as a useless human.
Contrary to popular belief, Elena was not human, nor was her name Elena Gilbert. She'd taken over her doppelganger's life when she'd been killed in the car accident. Stefan hadn't been as thorough as he thought when he 'saved' Elena. She was alive when he pulled her out, but she didn't stay that way. She had severe injuries when she was pulled out, and he didn't have time to give her his blood before he heard someone come along. That person had of course been 'Elena'. She'd gotten there just as the girl took her last breath. From there, she got rid of the body and took her place.
She wasn't sure why she decided to take over the young girl's life. She supposed it was partially a curiosity about her descendent and her family. She also wanted to know more about Stefan Salvatore, and she'd had the feeling he wasn't simply going to disappear. She'd already known about his relationship with Katherine Pierce.
Taking over the real Elena's life had turned out to be a mistake though. She knew that as soon as Rose and Trevor had brought up the original family. She knew exactly what they wanted from her at that moment, and it was confirmed when Elijah showed up.
Elena, as she preferred to go by now, knew Elijah well. She knew all the originals, which was why she also knew what those vampires wanted her for. They planned to hand her over to Klaus to be his sacrifice. That would not have ended well. Klaus would've known almost instantly that she was not the real Elena Gilbert. Honestly, she was surprised she was able to fool Elijah. She was good at concealing herself, but she'd known Elijah for centuries. Klaus, however, she had no delusions that she could fool him. He knew her too well. He knew all her mannerisms. He knew how she carried herself. Good acting and spells would not fool him, and even if somehow, they did, he would figure it out when he went to sacrifice her.
Elena wasn't sure what to do. Klaus was going to find out about her, and he was going to show up. That was a problem. It wasn't that she feared Klaus. She did not. Klaus would never harm her, but she didn't particularly want to see him either. She left the asshole for a reason. Then there was Stefan. If Klaus found out about her and Stefan, he would kill him and possibly Damon too. Klaus was possessive, especially of her.
She could remember the day she met Klaus, and despite her feelings now, she still remembered those memories fondly. Back then, her name was Eleanor, which was very close to the name she had now.
Flashback
Eleanor Petrova found herself being manhandled by two vampires into a large dwelling. She could easily fight them off, but she knew where they were taking her and she was intrigued. She'd known for a while about Niklaus Mikaelson and what he wanted with those of her origin. She always presumed it was only a matter of time before their paths collided. She felt no fear as she was brought to him. She could not serve his purposes. She did not fit his criteria. He needed a human doppelganger of her linage, and she had not been that for quite some time.
Eleanor was pulled into a room, where two men waited. One was dark haired, and one was blond. She knew by the satisfied look on his face that it was the blond that she'd been brought before.
"Ah, Hello, dear Eleanor," Niklaus said in a thick English accent.
"Niklaus, I presume," Eleanor said, her voice remaining completely even.
Niklaus looked slightly taken aback as he approached. "You know who I am, yet you do not appear afraid."
"I have nothing to fear from you," she said simply.
"And why is...?" Niklaus trailed off mid-sentence as he approached and suddenly became enraged. "You're not human! You've been turned!"
Eleanor smiled. "You are at least smarter than your henchmen. They did not figure it out."
"You got someone to turn you to stop the sacrifice! You will suffer dearly for that," said an enraged Niklaus.
"Don't be ridiculous. I was turned long before I knew of your existence or what you wanted with me. And I would have never willingly turned. I was a witch before my death. You must know what vampirism means to my kind," Eleanor said. She was still a witch actually. For most, it would be impossible to retain magic after turning, but she guessed that the doppelganger blood in her allowed her to keep it. However, she would not be revealing that this vampire.
"I could still kill you, you know," Niklaus said. He looked as though that was exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to kill her just for not being what he needed.
"Do what you will. I do not fear death. I would've died long ago had I not been turned. I would not have allowed myself to be captured if I feared you. I could've and still could kill them easily," she said.
Niklaus' scowl slowly turned into a smirk.
Flashback
Elena sighed as she let the memory fade away. It didn't help any to dwell on the past. It certainly didn't help matters now. Klaus would show up and the Salvatore's would suffer for it. Despite the fact that her interest in Stefan had started as strictly practical, she developed real feelings for him, and she cared for Damon as well. Klaus would take it as a threat to what he believed to be his.
Elena considered leaving, but that wouldn't help matters now. Klaus would still come, and he'd likely still learn about her relationship with Stefan. True, he might not find out that it was her he had the relationship with instead of the real Elena Gilbert, but she didn't want to jeopardize Stefan's safety by risking it. Plus, both Klaus and the Salvatore brothers would come after her, which meant it likely would come out.
Elena huffed in frustration as she contemplated the zero options she had. "Damn it! Niklaus and his damn obsession! I suppose going back to the idiot is an option, but not even that would stop him from coming to Mystic Falls for 'Elena'." For now, there was nothing she could do. Any move she made could make things worse. Her best option was to do nothing and hope that Klaus somehow didn't find out about 'Elena'. However, she would prepare for the worst. She would prepare for the return of her husband.
