The next day, Elena and Elijah walked towards the crypt that Katherine was being held in. Once that thorn in Elena's side was dealt with, she intended to go to the Salvatore's. She would have Elijah compel them, but first she was going to tell them the truth. She wanted to have at least one honest conversation with them before she had them compelled to forget her.
"You're sure you wanna do this? You will not hear the end of it from Niklaus for quite a while," Elijah warned her.
"I can deal with my husband. Katerina Petrova will not be the bane of my existence any longer. Her hold on Klaus ends today," Elena said. Sure, it wasn't completely Katherine's fault that Klaus was obsessed with her, But Elena didn't care. She had become the other woman in Elena's marriage. She wouldn't allow it any longer. Then there was what Katherine had done to Stefan and Damon. Elena might not even want her dead if it weren't for that. She might even feel sorry for her, given what she lost at Klaus's hand. However, Katherine got off on hurting people. She was no victim.
"Very well. I cannot deny that I will enjoy this," Elijah said.
"Once we're finished here, we're going to the boarding house. You'll compel the Salvatore's," Elena told him.
"I thought you wanted another day," Elijah said.
"Before I leave, yes. I need another day to make sure one of the humans is off of vervain. But I need Stefan and Damon gone before I go. I need to make sure no one tries to contact them," Elena said. Her plan was to tell her friends that Damon and Stefan left before her and that she was planning to meet Stefan later. She couldn't chance Bonnie or Caroline talking to Stefan about it.
"Very well," Elijah said.
"I'll have you wait outside when we get there, and I'll tell you when to come in. I'm going to tell Stefan and Damon the truth before you compel them," Elena said. She then waited because she knew Elijah was not going to be happy about what she just told him.
Elijah stopped in his tracks and stood in front of her. "Absolutely not!"
"You're going to compel them anyway. It will be fine. I intend to be honest with Stefan at least once," Elena said firmly.
"These vampires are young and impulsive. You do not know what they might do when they find out you've been lying to them," Elijah told her.
Elena raised an eyebrow at her brother-in-law. "Elijah, do you believe that I cannot handle myself against two baby vampires? Even without my witch powers, I could handle them with ease."
"I know you are very capable, Eleanor. But I also know that these two vampires matter to you. I worry you will let that cloud your judgment," Elijah said. Honestly, he believed it already had clouded her judgment. She would not have stayed so long if she had been thinking clearly.
Elena shrugged. "Well, if that happens, you will be there to back me up. I am doing this, Elijah.
"Very well. However, I cannot guarantee their safety if that happens," Elijah warned her. Eleanor was a part of his family. He cared for her the same way he cared for his siblings. If someone even attempted to harm her, they would not live to tell about it.
"We're close enough to the tomb to begin. Let's get this done," Elena said. She immediately began setting up the ritual.
Elijah, meanwhile, pulled out a pint of blood from a bag he was carrying. His sister-in-law was gonna need it when she was done. The spell was well within her capabilities, but it would weaken her.
As soon as she set everything up, Elena began chanting. The whole process only took several minutes, but it did take a lot out of her when she was done. It wouldn't be fatal to her like it had been for Bonnie's grandmother, but she did need to refuel. "Blood."
Elijah wordlessly handed her the bag of blood.
Elena had sucked the bag dry within a matter of moments.
"I have more if you need it."
Elena shook her head. "I should be all right. I fed in preparation before we came here."
"Shall we then?" Elijah asked.
Elena nodded and led the way further towards the tomb. Once they got there, they saw that Katherine had already made her way towards the entrance. However, she backed away as soon as she saw Elijah, causing Elena to smirk. "Hello, Katherine. I see you remember Elijah."
"Katarina it has been an awful long time," Elijah said before taking a step closer to her.
"You... You can't come in here. You'll be trapped," Katherine said as she continued to back away in fear.
Elijah chuckled as he took a step inside. "Do you truly believe that I don't know many witches capable of removing this spell? Did you believe you'd be untouchable here?"
"We'll be able to leave just fine," Elena said.
Katherine glared at her. "You're an idiot. Elijah will take you directly to Klaus."
Elena chuckled. "No, he won't. He has no reason to. I will go to Klaus all on my own. I'm not like you, Katherine. I'm not afraid of Klaus."
"Then you're more stupid than even I thought. Klaus is a monster. He will bleed you dry to end that curse," Katherine told her.
"That's kind of hypocritical of you, isn't it? Calling someone else a monster? You, the woman who plays games with innocent young men? The woman who goes out of her way to destroy the relationship between two brothers. All for her own amusement. Who the hell are you to call anyone a monster?" Elena asked scathingly. She would not stand by while Katerina Petrova disparaged her husband. Yes, Klaus was a remorseless killer. He didn't care who he hurt, if it benefited him and those he cared about. Many would consider that monstrous. However, the disgrace of a woman in front of her had no right commenting on it.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with," Katherine said.
Elena flashed over to Katherine and smirked. "No, Katherine. It's you what doesn't know who she's dealing with."
Katherine gasped in shock. "You're a vampire! They turned you. I would have thought you would have learned from my mistake. Klaus is gonna kill everyone you love now. You'll be running for the rest of your life, just like I've been."
Elena laughed. "Oh, I get it. You think I got turned so Klaus couldn't use me, like you did. I'm afraid you're mistaken. I've been like this long before we met."
Katherine shook her head. "That's not possible. I would have noticed."
"I make sure people don't notice. And by the way, I'm much more than a vampire," Elena said before throwing her across the room with a wave of the hand.
Katherine laid there in shock for a moment before getting up. "No. Only a witch could have done what you just did. A vampire can't be a witch. It's a violation against nature."
"You're mostly right. Most vampires don't keep their witch powers. In fact, other than a few siphons, I'm the only one. You see, Doppelganger blood changes the game. Our blood alone has magical properties. Somehow it allowed me to keep my magic," Elena explained.
Katherine could hardly believe this was happening. All this time, she'd been planning to sacrifice Elena to save herself, and it was always going to fail. Klaus couldn't use Elena any more than he could use her.
"I can see you're starting to figure out how stupid you are. Your plan to sell me to Klaus was always gonna fail, and you're starting to see that," Elena said in a smug tone.
"I don't understand how this is possible. I learned everything I could about Elena Gilbert. She was human. I knew her mother," Katherine said as she tried to work all of this out.
Elena nodded. "You're right. Elena Gilbert was human. Unfortunately for you, she was dead before you even got here."
"You're another doppelganger? There were two after me?"
Elena laughed loudly. "No, honey. I'm not your doppelganger. You're mine. See, I've been a vampire longer than you've existed. You're barely an infant in the vampire world compared to me. You have no idea who you've been screwing with."
Katherine took several steps back. The more she learned about Elena, or whoever she was, the clearer it became that she had made a colossal mistake by coming here. She'd come after a human and had instead pissed off a vampire/witch. At this point, she wondered if Elena was more dangerous to her than Klaus or Elijah. "Just let me go. I'll keep running and I'll never bother you again. Or trap me back in here. Please."
Elena laughed again. "You know, I was willing to do that at first. I was ready to let you rot in here. It seemed fitting after what you put Damon through. However, there's one problem with that. See, the only way I can save Stefan's life is to go back to my husband, who is obsessed with you and this stupid curse. I can't fix the curse, but I can't get rid of you. I will not come in second to you for the rest of eternity."
"Your... Your husband? Klaus?" Katherine asked in horror. This was even worse than she had been thinking. If you put it together right, she had tried to sacrifice Klaus's own wife to him. If he got ahold of her, he would make her wish. She had never drawn breath for that.
"Eleanor, I believe Katarina has begun to understand the severity of the situation. with the fact that her plan would have failed. Niklaus would make her suffer for a lifetime for trying to sacrifice you," Elijah said.
"You married Klaus? He would have sacrificed you had you been human," she said.
"Obviously. I have no delusions about who Klaus is. And you should no longer have any delusions that I am not just as ruthless when necessary," Elena said before turning to Elijah. "It's time to get this done. We have other things on our agenda.
"Agreed," Elijah Said Before Advancing On Katherine.
Katherine backed up some more. "Elijah, please don't. I'm sorry for hurting you. I was only trying to protect myself."
Meanwhile, Elena's phone rang. She looked at it briefly and saw that it was Jeremy, but then she ignored it. Whatever he needed could wait. She didn't plan to miss Katherine's last moments.
"Your pleas are pointless, Katerina," Elijah said before taking a hold of her neck.
"Klaus will be furious if you kill me now," Katherine said. Her voice was laced with pure terror.
Elena's phone soon rang again. She sighed before walking outside and around the corner. Then she answered the call. "Jeremy, what is it? I don't really have time to talk right now.
It wasn't Jeremy's voice on the other end of the call, though. "Hello, love. I'm afraid young Jeremy is preoccupied, but he sends his regards."
Elena froze at the infuriating, yet sexy voice at the other end of the call. There was a voice she hadn't heard in a very long time. "Is this? Why do you have my brother's phone?" Obviously, she knew who it was, but she had to feign ignorance for now.
"Come now, love. Can you really not figure it out? I know we haven't met, but I'm sure you've heard by now how hard I've been looking for you."
"Klaus," Elena said.
"That's my smart little doppelganger. How about you come home and we meet face to face? And try not to keep me waiting. I would hate for something unfortunate to happen to your brother or aunt."
Elena hung up the phone and then chucked it at the stone tomb wall, smashing into pieces. She was screwed. This wasn't supposed to happen. She was supposed to be able to settle everything in Mystic Falls before Klaus found out. Now he had not only found out, he was in her home.
"Damn it," Elena cursed as she headed back into the tomb. Elijah was still holding Katherine by the throat when she got there, still taunting her. "Elijah, rip out her heart and be done with it. Klaus is at my house."
Elijah wasted no time in doing what she asked. He reached his hand into Katerina's chest and ripped out her heart, barely paying attention as she fell to the ground, lifeless. "Niklaus has found you?"
"Yeah, we have to go now," Elena said before rushing back out of the tomb. Elijah was right behind her.
