A.N: I had bits of this lying around and remembered it when I saw some usually smart people acting rather idiotically at a New Year party earlier this year. ^.^

"When was that?" Shinichi asked, puzzled. Judging from their apparent ages in the photo, it couldn't have been from all that long ago, and he had an excellent memory. And yet… "I don't remember that at all."
Kaito coughed lightly. He remembered it all too well…
. . . . . . . . .
Kaito was admittedly surprised when Shinichi wandered over in the middle of the party and plopped himself down right in the magician's lap. Shinichi had never been one for public displays of affection and that hadn't changed much over the years. He still blushed like mad at the simplest things (which Kaito found absolutely adorable. He also loved how telling the detective this never failed to make him even redder). One look into the detective's eyes was enough however to tell him that someone must have slipped him some of the punch that Kaito knew had been tampered with (no, it hadn't been him, thank you very much). And since he could see his father hiding a snicker behind his cup as he talked to a giggling Yukiko-san on the other side of the room, he had a pretty fair guess of who that someone (or possibly someones) might be.
However, while he certainly didn't mind Shinichi sitting on his lap, his detective was acting rather…odd. He was telling some kind of story that must have made sense to him (because every now and then he giggled—actually giggled—like he thought something was really funny) but didn't make any sense at all to Kaito. Not, he had to admit, that he was paying that much attention. He couldn't, because the way Shin-chan was wiggling and bouncing happily as he told his—whatever story was getting more and more hard to ignore by the second.
How much of the punch had Shinichi had anyway? Shinichi was entirely capable of acting like a five year old when he was excited about something, but this was entirely different.
"Er, Shin-chan?" he prodded gently, interrupting the incoherent story.
"Hmm?" Shinichi turned to look up at him with wide, bleary blue eyes and a bright smile.
Kaito found himself momentarily unable to say anything. He really, really wished they were alone right now.
"Could you maybe sit over there instead?" he asked, pointing to the armchair adjacent to his own.
Shinichi's expression morphed slowly into a puzzled one. "Why?"
"Well Shin-chan, you seem to be a little drunk," Kaito explained, finding the expression on his detective's face amusing despite his predicament. If it had been any time but now, he would have found it hilarious. "In fact, maybe you should go get some sleep."
Those adorable, big blue eyes blinked and then began to water in a way Kaito hadn't seen them do since they were a lot, lot younger (try almost two decades ago?). "You…want me to leave?"
And of course that had to make perfect sense.
"No! No, of course I don't want you to leave." No, what he really wanted to do right now was to take Shinichi upstairs and—
He cut the thought off. Thinking about it would only make the situation worse.
"You know what? Forget I said anything," he said instead. Inwardly, he allowed himself a groan of frustration. Of all the parties it could have been it had to be his mother's birthday. He couldn't leave before the singing and cutting of the cake! So he was going to have to sit here and try to hold Shinichi still as he went back to his wiggly, giggly storytelling.
Kaito cast another look around the room in an attempt to find something to distract himself with and caught the two people he'd pegged as probably being responsible for his current situation watching him (Yukiko-san doing so through a lens). His dad had the nerve to wink.
Oh he was so going to get them back for this!
. . . . . . . . .
…Shinichi eyed Kaito curiously. The magician seemed to have developed a twitch all of a sudden. That was…odd. A look around the room revealed that his mother had fallen against his father in silent tears of laughter, and Toichi-san had actually turned his face away. Chikage was shaking her head in exasperation, but her lips were twitching.
Obviously Shinichi was missing something here.
