Brains & Brawn
Inspired by the tvtrope of the same name, and continuing my adventurer-tag-team theme.
I swallowed hard at the mountain of Sidhe magic blocking our path. "Well, I'm clearly the brains of this operation."
Jareth didn't bat an eye as he surveyed the writhing mass for weaknesses. "And why's that?"
"You've got the magical brawn. I have to contribute something."
"You've got stubborn determination in spades. Dragging us to this godforsaken place and all."
"It's for a good cause. Saving the collective ass of the Winter Court and all."
"And why exactly do you care about that again?"
I wanted to hit him on the arm, but was afraid it would disturb his concentration. That writhing mass was looking unfriendlier by the moment. "Because you're part of said Court, of course."
"And why does that matter again?"
"Now you're just fishing for compliments."
"Tell me anyway?" The sudden slump of his shoulders suggested things were looking fairly dire in the sneak-in-the-side-gate-of-Summer's-stronghold department.
"Because you're a magically brawny Winter court trickster and we have a history."
"That's all?"
I placed a hand on his shoulder. "And I'm really good at doing impossible things. Especially when you're involved."
That got a half-smile out of him. "There's that. Have a plan to get through this impossible gate?"
"Yeah. We don't. We go with Plan B."
"We have a Plan B?"
"We will."
He looked at me fondly. "You have such faith in us."
"Long experience. And a good track record."
"I do love you, you ridiculous woman."
"I love you too, honey. Let's go concoct Plan B."
