Alone For How Long

Based on this quote from David Bowie's Teenage Wildlife:

The word is that the hunted one is out there on his own

You're alone for maybe the last time

Side note: This seems to be set in the Labyrinth Fairytale universe where Sarah's an occasional heroine by trade.

I stared at Jareth in my doorway, noting the frayed edges of his sleeves and the scuff on his Fluevog boots. I winced at the scuff. He loved those boots and tended to telegraph instant death to anyone who wandered near them. This couldn't be good. "You need a place to hide out, don't you?"

He threw me that roguish grin that made me want to both kiss him and throttle him. "I might."

I sighed, walked back to the kitchen, and pulled out another tea mug. "Why don't you ever come to see me when you're not running for your life, homeless, and friendless?"

"Wouldn't want you to get bored, really."

"Oh, so this is all about my happiness, is it?"

"Would you believe me if I said yes?"

"Hell, no."

"Well, then." He glanced at my pantry. "Do you have any of that mint tea from last time?"

"I might. How long do you need to hole up here?"

He turned his attention pointedly to my cat and began scratching behind Beast's ears. Beast, the perfidious feline traitor, arched into Jareth's touch like he'd never been scritched before in his life.

I snorted. "Don't think you can escape the question by loving my cat. How long do you need to stay this time?"

"Mmm...how does indefinitely sound?"

I dropped my head to my hand. "What exactly did you do?"

"It's a long story."

"I have plenty of tea, and Beast apparently isn't going anywhere. Start talking."
