Chapter 1 – Sunday Dinner

Sunday at the Reagans started off like any other Sunday; the family all went to church and then went to Frank and Henry's place to prepare dinner. There was just one obvious difference with this particular Sunday…everyone could feel the tension between the two brothers. They would actively avoid each other as much as possible, even throwing glares at the other every now and then. After saying grace, they started passing the bowls and plates around to each other before digging in to the delicious homemade food. To break up the awkward silence, Linda spoke up first. "So Erin, how has work been this week?"

Erin smiled at her sister-in-law, grateful for some sort of noise other than forks hitting plates. "It's been good, thanks. We've been gearing up for the Walter trial next week so a lot of my focus has been on that," she said.

"Sounds like you've put in a lot of work…hopefully someone doesn't take it out from under you," came a not so quiet and bitter reply to her right.

Everyone looked over at the youngest Reagan sibling, who had looked up and was giving a look to his older brother, who was giving him one in return. "Well maybe the person who did was the one who actually did all of the work and Erin should respect that and move on," Danny replied with some annoyance in his voice.

Before Jamie could say anything back, Erin cut him off. "Okay, what's going on? There's been animosity between you two all day."

"Oh just Danny being Danny is all," Jamie told her. "Taking the arrest away from the actual arresting officers, just like detectives like to do."

"It was our collar—" Danny nearly yelled before being hushed by his grandfather.

"Your brothers are arguing about a call that Jamie and his partner responded to yesterday," Frank told his daughter. "There was a robbery happening at a convenience store that they were the first responders to; both suspects were armed, a firefight happened and Officer Janko shot one of them in the leg before they surrendered. Jamie and Officer Janko were able to arrest the suspects and luckily no one else was hurt. But it just so happens that the case Danny and Detective Baez have been working on about a string of robberies is connected to this robbery so they ended up taking over the arrest and the case," he explained to everyone.

"As per usual," Jamie said quietly, picking at his food.

"It was our case, we've been looking for these guys for weeks!" Danny told him angrily.

"My cuffs, my arrest! Janko even shot one of them!"

"You may have gone to Harvard but I swear you can be a knucklehead sometimes," Danny said, shaking his head and going back to his plate.

"The book says—" Jamie started to say, but was interrupted.

"'The book says', do you even hear yourself right now?" Danny asked, mocking him. "We're the lead investigators, which makes it our collar!"

"Alright, that's enough!" came a loud voice from the head of the table. They all stopped and looked at Henry. "I don't want to hear any more of this! We're here to be with family and enjoy some food! Now if you can't act like brothers instead of cops, then you can eat in the kitchen!" he said as he looked back and forth from one to the other.

Jamie set his fork down. "I'm sorry pop, I didn't mean for any of that to happen. But I think I'll just head home because I think I've lost my appetite," he said as he started to get up.

"Jamie, you don't need to leave," his father told him, hoping he'd change his mind.

His youngest just shook his head, his plate in his hand. "It's okay dad, I think it might be best. You know with our stubborn Irishness that we have, I don't want to be a 'knucklehead' and say something I'll regret." He went to the kitchen with his plate and drink. He knew Danny gave him a look at his last comment; he could feel the glare from behind him, but he ignored it. He scraped the remaining food into a container to take home, grabbed his jacket, then left his dad's without barely saying a goodbye to the rest of his family.

The family didn't say anything for a while; some looked around the table while others went back to eating…the 'others' being Danny. Linda looked at her husband, giving him a glare of her own. Danny could feel it; he could actually feel all of them looking at him, but he just kept his head down and picked at his food. He knew he shouldn't have blown up like that, but sometimes the kid just made him so mad with all of the rule following. Maybe he'd call him tomorrow and talk to him…or a couple of days later when things have cooled down some more.

After a few quiet moments, Nicky piped up and told her great-grandfather how good the food was. Once a conversation started going, others started talking again as well, trying to lighten the mood that had gone dark. Of course it didn't ease it completely since there was a member of the family that wasn't there anymore. There were four eyes that would occasionally glance up at the empty chair during the rest of dinner; two coming from Frank and the other two from his oldest son.

'Hopefully by next week things will be blown over,' Frank thought. But if only he knew what was to come for his family…

BB-BB-BB-BB

William Todd sat in a chair in the living room of the house that was in the middle of nowhere, just like he liked; just like he wanted. He had been sitting there and thinking for a while. Months and months of planning and restoring the basement has finally led to this…extending the room, adding a bathroom, putting bars in the one window, putting in a reinforced steel door with a deadbolt lock. Starting tomorrow, Police Commissioner Frank Reagan will feel what he's felt for all of these years; his pain and anguish; his remorse and guilt. He'll feel it and he'll regret what he did to William all those years ago, when they were supposedly supposed to have each other's backs. His so called partner ruined his life…and now he's going to ruin his. William smiled to himself…oh boy, was this going to be fun. After finishing the beer that he had in his hand, he stood up to throw it away, then he went to his bedroom. He's going to need a good night's sleep since he had to get up early in the morning, if he wanted to pull off the start of his plan. Mr. Commissioner had no idea what was coming and it was going to be sweet, sweet revenge.
