After lunch, the students find themselves once more in their classroom waiting for their teacher. Every single one sits in their seats, not knowing who will be coming through that door or whether their lack of readiness will get back to their homeroom teacher. The silence is almost stifling.
Kaminari can't take it anymore. He leans over in his seat, whispering to his neighbor. "Hey, did you hear the rumors about who's going to teach Hero Studies?"
"No, who did you hear about? Another hero?" Asks the empty uniform next to him.
"No, well... sort of?" He scratches his head, trying to focus on her invisible face and not let his gaze fall further. "You know how All Might recorded our videos? I heard that's because he's a new teacher here."
"Oooh! You think we'll get to be taught by the number one hero?" Toru giggles in excitement.
"It's possible!" He says, grinning at her. "Do you think he'll have great advice for us, like Midoriya-san does?"
The boy in question looks up from a notebook, glancing around for the person who said his name.
"Maybe... I haven't heard much of what he's like as a mentor, he's always off doing his own thing." She muses.
Izuku has to put his head back in his notebook to not give anything away.
"I'm sure he'll be awesome!" Denki says, giving her a thumbs up. "He's got all sorts of experience!"
"Doesn't he finish most fights in a few punches, though?" Shoda asks, turning part way around in his seat.
He shrugs, trying to defend his thoughts. "Still has to be smart about them, though, right?"
The invisible girl pumps her arms. "Yeah! He didn't get to be number one on just power!"
The chubby boy shrugs slightly. "I'm just saying, I'm not sure what he could teach us, exactly."
Izuku slowly pulls down his notebook, frowning at his idol being discounted like that.
"I bet-"
The girl is cut off as the door to their classroom is suddenly slammed open to the sound of, "I am here!"
Most of the kids are startled, but Denki immediately blurts out, "See, I was right!"
Izuku can't help but laugh, giving his family friend a grin. A drop of sweat forms on his brow when Bakugou gives him a suspicious look.
All might, in full heroic form and fashion, steps up behind the desk as he looks to them all. "I hope you all are ready for today's lesson."
"He's wearing his Silver Age costume!" The green-haired boy whispers, covering his mouth to try and avoid disrupting the class.
"Is that rare?" Hozarou asks.
"Many fans point to that as being the time when his popularity was rising," Bakugou mutters, his face less stressed than normal.
All Might laughs at their chatter. "Now, this will potentially be your most important class here at UA High. Think of it as... 'Hero-ing 101'."
Kaminari smiles to himself. "I knew it. This is more important than science."
"Science would've told you that you needed to be grounded," Bakugou retorts.
"Here you will learn the basic of being a pro, and what it means to fight in the name of good!" Their teacher continues.
One of the students raises their hand. It is rather easy to guess who it is. "Sir! Will there be texts to read for this class?"
All Might actually pauses at this. "Hmm... Perhaps later, but today's lesson will be more of a practical one."
Shoda shifts in his seat, uncertain. "Practical?"
He nods. "Today's lesson will pull no punches. Fight training in a battle trial!"
"Already?" Izuku mutters, surprised, but unable to stop the flicker of excitement lit inside his chest.
"But, another key to being a hero is..." The hero pulls out a remote and presses a button. A few sections of the wall extend, revealing cases with their seat numbers on them. "Looking good! In these are costumes designed for you based on your quirk registration forms and the requests you sent in before school started."
The class cheers, and they take turns hurrying over and grabbing the ones assigned to them. With Bakugou and Izuku being the closest, they got theirs first. Izuku pulls out his, which have been put into a rather large backpack. He checks the pockets to make sure everything is there, nodding to himself before looking up at All Might with a smile. "I have to remember to thank mom and Toshinori-san. They helped me with the design..."
Bakugou glances back at him, an eyebrow raised. "Your mom's still dating that skeleton, Deku? Surely she has better prospects."
He simply shakes his head, giving him an awkward smile. "No, I'm pretty sure they're in love." He jumps at the squeal from somewhere else in the classroom, frantically looking around for the source.
Most everyone else seems too distracted by peeking at their own costumes, chatter rapidly increasing.
"Get yourselves suited up, then meet me at Training Ground Beta!" The blonde pro hero continues his instructions with his signature grin.
As they stand to do so, a certain blonde scratches his head in confusion. "...if only I knew where that was..."
"Oh, I saw it, just follow me!" His invisible conversation partner from earlier chirps.
He immediately smiles at her. "Thanks!" He tries to guess where her eyes are, because she might slap him if he stares at her shirt.
All Might chuckles as he watches them all. "They say that clothes make the pros, young ladies and gentlemen. Behold, you are the proof! Take this to heart," he starts to head for the door, "from now on, you are all heroes in training!" With that, he makes his exit.
"So cool!" Mina says, grinning brightly.
Kaminari looks at his outfit's shoes, deflating slightly. "...these are the old version. Dang it."
So wrapped up are most of them in their outfits that they don't see Izuku has rushed out the door after All Might, journals in hand.
He can faintly see wisps of smoke coming off the man as he loosens his stance, even with his back to him.
The teen makes sure that his footsteps can be heard, reaching his favorite hero's side. "Did I ever thank you for that autograph?" He starts with somewhat of a non sequitur.
"You'd have to be a little more specific than that." All Might chuckles.
"When you came to rescue me," he says, glancing around. "It reminds me that I need to thank Toshinori-san for his help with my costume. I'm not sure when I'll see him next, though."
He chuckles. "If he was close enough to do that, I imagine it won't be too long. As to your first question, it wasn't a problem, I was happy to."
"It's still the right thing to do, thanking you," he points out. "Though, admittedly, that wasn't the main reason I came after you..."
"Oh?" He regards him curiously.
He scratches his head, glancing out a nearby window. "Which direction, exactly, am I supposed to go?"
All Might pauses before sighing. "I thought they had given the maps out in the orientation..." Clearing his throat, he quickly rattles out the direction to the testing grounds. "It's still on the school grounds, so it's just a small walk."
Izuku nods, glad that he caught all of that. He still has to make sure the number one hero knows one important piece of information. "... Aizawa-sensei didn't take us to orientation. I just thought you might want to know, sir..."
The hero almost seems to deflate as he sighs. "Yes… I did hear he put you all through his usual. Worry not, though his methods are unusual at times, he is fully qualified as a teacher and does produce some of our best students."
The teenager nods, looking thoughtful. "I should head back to help others find their way. Though maybe I should ask someone for a map… any idea who might have them?" He asks.
"I believe Miss Yaoyorozu and Young Iida should have them. They seem like the prepared type."
He nods, remembering the girl with the high ponytail. "You have a point. See you in class!" He turns and hurries back to the classroom so he doesn't get lost, himself.
"See you at the trial!" He laughs and bids him farewell for the moment.
Izuku makes it back just as Momo has started leading the students out, startling her at the door. "Sorry! Had to ask the teacher something. He said you have a map?"
Nodding, both Yaoyorozu and Iida hold up a pamphlet regarding the classrooms.
"Great! Please lead the way." He moves to the side and bows respectfully.
There's easily visible excitement among the group as they all hold their cases.
The class takes their first trip to the exciting subject of hero studies.
The minutes pass and All Might finds himself waiting by the entrance to the training area. The wind blows gently through his hair, lacking the biting chill that is the usual remnant of winter.
While one might expect the kids to all arrive at once, it appears as though this group is moving in groups, and the first to arrive is a familiar group of three.
On the right is a certain blonde bomber, with a black tank top, camo cargo pants, and boots on his chest. His mask is shaped like a dark explosion, rather fitting for his frustrated expression. Gloved hands shift the massive grenade-shaped bracers on his arms, trying to get them comfortable.
The one on the left is the tallest, dressed in a full suit of armor and exhaust pipes behind his shoulders. He bears a striking resemblance to his older brother's outfit, likely using it as inspiration. He still moves robotically, the entire ensemble making him look like an Android at a renaissance fair.
In the middle is the one who connects them, wearing a dark green jumpsuit with red boots. His white gloves seem to have small compartments by his wrists, and the mask around his mouth and nose sits comfortably beneath a pair of goggles fastened to his face. Why there are cross hairs on each side of the latter, he isn't entirely sure, but they still look nice.
The pro hero nods approvingly, glad he had talked a certain protege of his out of anything too obviously an homage to his own look.
The armored student stops a healthy distance away, bowing at a perfect ninety degrees at his waist. "Sensei!"
The other two look at him, one in confusion and the other in annoyance. It isn't hard to guess who is who.
All Might laughs heartily. "It hasn't been that long since you saw me, do not worry!"
"Of course!" He straightens back up. "So we're the first ones out?"
"How is that possible?" Izuku mutters, cupping his mask with his hand like he normally would his chin. "You're wearing a suit of armor and Kacchan has multiple pieces..."
"Perhaps it was how focused you were on class! Quite the compliment." The hero beams.
"Spiky Hair was talking to Sparky in the locker room," Bakugou grunts, finally lowering his arms.
There's the sound of more approaching as All Might actually pauses at that. "Ah, I see. Well, no matter, here come the rest!"
The trio turn to look, the one in the middle only able to hide his excitement by the grace of his face mask. Another chance to learn about his classmates' quirks is coming.
What approaches is a veritable rainbow of colors, shapes, and costumes of all kinds. Uniqueness to quirks and inspiration from heroes are clear as they excitement in the air comes with them.
Izuku's eyes shine in excitement as he whips out a notebook to sketch each one under their pages. He is meticulous with the details and postulates what each one does. He takes more time to guess about Yaoyorozu's quirk since he still doesn't know what it is, nor how a revealing outfit and book would help.
All Might lets out another laugh as everyone arrives. "Ah, seeing you all geared up gets me pumped! Shall we get started, you buncha newbies?"
Mina grins, placing her hands on her hips, accentuating the pattern of her outfit with the motion. "Sure! This should be better than yesterday!"
Kaminari eyes All Might nervously, scratching behind one of his headphones. "You won't expel us if we fail, will you?"
He shakes his head. "What? No, of course not! You can learn a lot from failure, and the point of school is to learn."
He sags in relief, looking to the empty air at his right. "Good news for us, yeah?"
"Uh huh!" A glove comes up to give a thumbs up.
Bakugou steps forward, hand twitching slightly. "So this is practical stuff, right? How hard should we go?"
"These will be actual battles against your fellow students. One of the goals will be capture, and free use of your mind and quirk is encouraged. I shall step in if things go too far." He replies.
Iida raises his hand for formality's sake as Bakugou steps back to do breathing exercises. "Sir! This is the fake city from our entrance exam. Does that mean that we'll be conducting urban battles again?"
"In a sense. Today's exercise will be about indoor encounters, as statistically that will be where many of your most dastardly encounters happen. Evil lairs, backroom deals, home invasions..." He lists a few examples, missing the rather smug look Kaminari shoots Shoda.
Mina raises an eyebrow. "How many evil lairs have you busted into?"
"Hmm… you know, I never counted." He puts a hand to his chin, somehow making it still look heroic. "Quite a few, the intelligent villains almost always have a lair."
"Then this is an important lesson!" Iida declares, bowing and almost hitting the starry-eyed teen in the process.
As Hozarou straightens his almost cosmic scarf he has on, All Might continues. "For this exercise, you'll be split into teams of two, some playing the roles of good guys, and others of bad guys. Your objectives will naturally pit you against each other in indoor battles."
Kaminari tilts his head, crossing his arms as he thinks. "How do we decide teams?"
"Well, for that..." The hero actually pulls out a small piece of paper from his pocket and looks at it.
Izuku smiles, able to imagine others asking whether those are cue cards.
"So, these are your mission briefings: the villains have hidden a nuclear missile somewhere in their hideout. The heroes must try to foil their plans.
To do that, the good guys have to either catch the evildoers or recover the weapon. Likewise the bad guys succeed if they catch the heroes or protect their payload."
"How do we do that?" Ojiro asks, straightening out his karate gi.
The Symbol of Peace makes a broad sweeping gesture with one hand, chuckling quietly. "That will be up to you. Use your wits and abilities. Those who aren't in the current match will be watching with me from a monitoring room. Expect feedback, win or lose."
A large number of the students glance at Izuku.
Iida raises his hand. "But who will we be paired with, sensei?"
"Ah, that," he pulls out a large box, "will be decided by lots!"
"Is it wise to leave this up to chance?" He protests, arms spread wide.
Before Izuku can even open his mouth, Yaoyorozu answers, "Pros often have to team up with heroes from other agencies on the spot, so maybe that's the reason we're seeing that here."
"Ah, I see!" He bows once more. "I retract my statement!"
"Correct." All Might nods approvingly. "Now, everyone come forward in an orderly fashion and let's see your teammates!"
As they line up, Izuku quietly mumbles to himself, standing behind Iida and Bakugou. "I haven't seen Uraraka-san, yet... I wonder if those ideas helped her..."
The class soon all grab their lottery balls out of the box, starting to find the one that matches theirs.
Izuku looks at his ball, blinking a few times to make sure he's understanding. "...is this a one or an I?"
A hand taps him on the shoulder, followed by a cheery familiar voice. "It's an I! Guess it's you and me! Must be fate!"
He brightens up and turns around, smiling at her. "That's great to kn-" He freezes, as though turned to stone as he lays eyes on her.
Ochako is dressed in a black and pink body suit with pink accessories including boots, helmet, and a small backpack. She continues her words to him as he takes this all in. "Sorry it took me a little longer! I wasn't sure this was mine at first but then I realized I must not have specified the base part because they ended up making it a skin tight body suit!" She pulls at a part on her thigh and it makes a small snap as it goes right back to hugging against her.
The boy's face turns beet red, though he manages to squeak out, "You look great! But… what did you tell them, exactly?"
"Stuff to make landing easier, help with vertigo, keep my hands free, and the stuff you mentioned about moving in air." She counts on her fingers.
"It might help with vertigo," he mutters, rubbing his chin and looking away. "I read something about that, anyways… though if it isn't comfortable for you visually, you could always put something on the outside?" He looks at her visor, trying to keep his gaze above the neckline. "Maybe something in case a villain has a gas-type quirk, too?"
"I mean, I thought about the full helmet, but I still need to be able to see... and I was also worried what might happen if I do get sick and can't get it off..." She goes quieter as she gets to that last part.
He quietly nods, giving that to her. "Yeah, that makes sense… so, uh, who do you think we're going against? Are we last?"
"Oh! Good question, let's see." She turns back to their teacher as he pulls out two smaller boxes.
"Alright, now our first competition will be..." He pulls out a ball from each box, revealing the letters H and J. "These two teams!"
Aoyama flourishes his cape, sparkles forming in the air around him. "We shall be so dazzling as the hero team!"
"…but you're playing the villains," Ojiro points out, an eyebrow raised.
Indeed, on a screen nearby now comes up, showing the two teams as Manga Fukidashi and Mashirao Ojiro vs Pony Tsunotori and Yuga Aoyama.
"So... we should do our worst?" Pony asks.
"Try to protect the bomb?" Izuku suggests.
"Utterly destroy them," Bakugou tells her.
Aoyama just stares at the screen, horrified.
She nods to them both, clenching her hands and bracing herself.
Meanwhile, Manga approaches his own teammate, an exclamation point for his head. "We got this!" He holds up a hand.
Ojiro nods, looking at the others. "…so we're facing lasers and horns?" He asks for clarification's sake. "Sounds tough…"
"Do not despair: overcome!" Comes a bit of inspiration from their teacher. "You will each have a few minutes to plan as the villains set up defenses."
"And the rest of us go to the viewing room?" Iida asks, hand raised.
"Correct, follow me!" He waves them all to do so.
The majority of the class does, leaving the two who go in the building and the two who wait outside.
The teen in the karate outfit looks to his teammate. "How good do you think our odds are?"
The ink-bottled hero taps his finger against an ellipses bubble he's made. "I haven't seen them fight, so I can only go off us. Yesterday gave us glimpses of what to prepare for."
"That makes sense," he says, nodding a bit. "So is that what you do?" He gestures to his speech bubble.
"I can form words and onomatopoeia!" He proudly announces.
"Alright," he says blankly. "We need to see if we can work that into a plan."
Manga nods and the two begin to scheme.
Meanwhile, in a dark room with one wall entirely devoted to screens showing different parts of the facility, the rest of the class and their teacher watch on.
"Who do you think will win?" Kaminari whispers to his partner just as the ten minutes starts.
"Hmm... I don't who I think will win, but I hope it's the heroes in this one because they'll have to do some cool stuff to get past a team that uses range!" She declares quietly.
"That makes sense..." He gestures towards Izuku, who is mumbling about Manga at that moment. "More than he is right now, at least. Who can even keep up with all of that?"
The air next to him agrees. "Yeah... If I didn't see him transform, I'd think he had some sort of analyze quirk."
"Same. Oh, what!" He stares at the screen. "How'd they catch the laser guy?"
"They had Fukidashi-san make a reflecting word," Yaoyorozu responds. "Though I can't quite make out what word it was that they used..."
"Aww, we missed it?" You can practically hear the invisible girl's pout.
"We can still see the fight between them and Pony-san!" Kaminari says, grinning a bit.
Izuku stops mumbling to look at him in confusion. "Isn't Pony her given name?"
"Is it?" The electric teen says, uncertain. "I don't know..."
"She doesn't seem to mind being called it." Toru points out.
"That, too!" He says, pointing at the empty air beside him.
The green-haired teen blinks, nodding once in embarrassed agreement.
They all turn just in time to see Pony hanging from the ceiling by twin horns embedded in it, providing more fired from her head to make them back off and leaving rough terrain behind.
"How many can she control?" Midoriya wonders, cupping his chin. "It... looks like it might be three?"
"I'm not sure, but she's keeping them on their toes by curving them." Ochako replies from next to him.
He nods, silently agreeing with her. "How does one strengthen a quirk like that," he wonders aloud.
"I don't know, but she almost pinned Tail, just then," Bakugou butts in.
"Wait, those are sticking in stone, if they hit him-" Ochako winces.
"Don't be a pansy," the fiery blonde grumbles, "it almost got his gi, not him."
"Oh! Yeah maybe that was too negative..." She laughs sheepishly.
"You were, Round Face," he confirms, ignoring Izuku's disappointed pout.
She pats her cheeks, quietly murmuring. "Are they that round?"
Izuku flounders a bit, trying to reassure her that they look wonderful, but Bakugou interrupts him with a proud roar. "Yeah! Get that dumb Tail, Horns!"
They look back to see Pony finishing up as she pins Ojiro's arms and legs to a wall with horns like staples, working on the tail next.
"…why isn't she using the capture tape?" Izuku asks, rather baffled.
"Maybe she's keeping him still long enough." Ochako guesses.
"Why isn't Fukidashi-san doing anything?" Kaminari asks, confused.
"Because they got separated," Yaoyorozu says, as if it were obvious. The blonde boy winces in embarrassment.
On screen, they see the tail boy's teammate surveying his situation from a distance around a corner, seemingly planning.
"Come on!" Mina cheers, hands to her mouth. "Save your partner!"
When Pony turns the other way to try and look for him, Manga dashes forward as they see the word 'Whoosh!' erupt from him and sweep the girl off her feet and away. He stops next to Ojiro and seems to coat his hands in the word 'Pow!' as he starts shattering horns holding him.
The room hears scribbling and muttering fill the air, turning as one to see Izuku has pulled a notebook out from somewhere to write down this quirk now that he has more information about it.
"…he's wondering what drawbacks it must have?" Kaminari mutters, barely able to catch that phrase in the verbal onslaught.
"It's a good question." Hozarou comments. "There's no perk that's flawless."
He considers that for a moment, then points to All Might. "He doesn't have a flaw, though."
"Maybe he overcame it?" The star-eyed boy guesses.
He crosses his arms, frowning a bit. "I guess?"
There's the sound of an alarm bell before they all look and see the round is over with Pony under a large bold 'Crush!' and Ojiro putting the capture tape on her.
Bakugou grunts as people shake him in their celebration.
All Might rubs his chin as he looks at the students on screen. "Hard fought, but both sides could improve, and it looks like they want to." He chuckles when he sees Pony still trying to lift the words off herself.
"Both sides?" Mina says, shocked. "They pulled off an underdog victory! What do they need to improve on?"
"They didn't fight as a unit as well as they could have, and likely could have secured victory faster if they closed in and kept up pressure." He states.
She stares with her mouth agape.
He chuckles. "It's fine, you're all still new at this, so the only way to learn is to try and accept criticism."
She eyes the stoic boy that is her partner for a second. "…might be a bit difficult," she admits.
"Try your best and we can work from there." He assures her. "Speaking of..." He turns on a microphone. "The winner of the first match is the hero team! All combatants please free your classmates and we shall set up for the next round."
"Sir!" Iida calls out, raising his arm and almost smacking his partner in the face. "When should we let them know how they can improve?"
"You can do peer review as you like, but don't just bombard them with what they did wrong." He holds up a finger. "And keep it between rounds so they can still watch others."
"Yes sir!" He lowers his arm, nearly smacking the girl with the leather jacket again.
She takes a cautious step away from him just in case.
Bakugou turns and stares at Pony as the four of them walk in, his arms crossed and his gaze showing disapproval. He says nothing, which is odd enough, but it appears he's waiting for her to speak.
She taps her fingers together before she takes a breath and meets his gaze. "Sorry..."
"Don't be sorry," he says, slowly shaking his head without breaking eye contact, "be better. A quote, right?"
She smiles and nods, determined. "I will be better!"
"Good." He nods, looking away and scratching his cheek. "You… did alright," he mumbles.
She beams now as All Might calls the next two teams out.
"Next up: Midoriya and Uraraka vs Todoroki and Ashido!"
I would like to point out that this was one of the things that ended up being randomized, and for good reasons, I swear. I would also like to mention that who they're fighting is also randomized. So yes, Izuku fighting Shoto was entirely coincidental. The teams are as follows:
Group A: Hozarou Gingawa (Starburst), Nirengeki Shoda (Twin Impact)
Group B: Tsuyu Asui (Frog), Momo Yaoyorozu (Creation)
Group C: Eijiro Kirishima (Hardening), Katsuki Bakugo (Explosion)
Group D: Shoto Todoroki (Half-Hot Half-Cold), Mina Ashido (Acid)
Group E: Toru Hagakure (Invisibility), Denki Kaminari (Electrification)
Group F: Kyoka Jiro (Earphone Jack), Tenya Ida (Engine)
Group G: Ibara Shiozaki (Vines), Fumikage Tokoyami (Dark Shadow)
Group H: Manga Fukidashi (Comic), Mashirao Ojiro (Tail)
Group I: Ochako Uraraka (Zero-Gravity), Izuku Midoriya (Pokémorph)
Group J: Pony Tsunotori (Horn Cannon), Yuga Aoyama (Navel Laser)
Hopefully this helps because I was trying to figure out how to mention the pairings in a natural way. Seriously, manga series have the advantage with that.
Thank you all so much for reading, for over three hundred favs, and I hope you have a nice day!
