Bucky was at home lying in bed thinking about him and Steve.

We'll do it all

Steve moved on to hit the jurk but someone grabbed his arm.

"What's with all the fighting?" someone asked and the jerk spun to see Bucky. "Don't you know there's a war on?" he asked and the jerk took a swing.

Bucky slugged him, spun him around, and planted an army boot in the ass. The jerk ran away and Bucky looked down at Steve, getting up from a pile of garbage.

"Sometimes I think you like getting punched." he said.

"I had him on the ropes." Steve said.

As he got up, a folded enlistment form fell from his pocket and Bucky picked it up and read.

"How many times is this?" he asked and read. "And you're from Paramus now? It's still illegal to lie on an enlistment form, and seriously, Jersey?"

Steve frowned, taking in Bucky's uniform.

"Looks like you got your orders." he said.

"107th ships to England first thing tomorrow." Bucky said. "This is my last night."

"So, what's the first stop. Church?" Steve said and Bucky grinned.

"Yeah... maybe second stop." he said and they started walking out of the alley.

"Where are we going?"

Then Bucky whipped out a newspaper and handed it to Steve.

"The future." he said and Steve opened the paper.

An ad reads, "WORLD EXHIBITION OF TOMORROW." Monorails race around futuristic buildings.

Then he thought about the day Steve saved him.

On our own

Steve reached the corridor. At the far end, Zola scurried out of his room, files pressed to his chest. Then he saw Steve who advanced and Zola ran the other way.

Then Steve stalked inside, wary. Past the scattered files and specimen jars, then he saw the large cage atop a rusty drain. A prisoner lied slumped against the bars. On hearing his footfalls, he called out wearily.

"Barnes, James Buchanan. Sergeant. 32557038." a prisoner said and Steve gaped, stunned.

"Bucky?" he said but the prisoner didn't respond.

"Who... who is that?" Bucky asked and Steve raced to the cage. "Is that..."

Steve smashed off the lock and held out his hand, grinning.

"It's me, Buck." he said and Bucky studied his face.

"Steve?"

"I thought you were dead."

"I thought you were smaller." Bucky said and Steve gently helped him down from the cage. "What happened to you?"

"I joined the Army."

At the control room the first of the timers reached zero and beeped.

Meanwhile one of the machines on the factory floor exploded.

At Zola's experiment room Steve and Bucky staggered as the blast shook the room. As they headed out, Steve saw a big map, featuring a series of HYDRA symbols spreading across Europe.

Then Steve helped Bucky limp down the corridor as more bombs went off.

"Did it hurt?" Bucky asked.

"Little bit." Steve said.

"Is it permanent?"

"So far."

"You are going to get so many girls."

Soon they reached the stairs and headed down but another explosion blocked their way. They headed back up, spotting a catwalk high above.

At the Compound Morita lead a group of P.O.W.'s toward the main gate. Then he heard something roaring up behind them and looked.

"DOWN!" Morita said and tackled a P.O.W. to the ground.

A blue blast just cleared their heads, blowing away the main gate. Behind the Cannon, Dernier and Falsworth whoop, politely and P.O.W.'S swarm the gate.

Meanwhile Steve and Bucky reached the catwalk only to find Schmidt on the other side. Zola waited behind him at the elevator.

"Captain America. How exciting." (smiles) "I'm a fan of your films." Schmidt said and handed the titanium box to Zola while he and Steve slowly walked forward, studying each other. "So the old man managed it after all. Not quite an improvement, but impressive." he said and Steve hit him in the jaw, sending him reeling.

"You've go no idea." Steve said and Schmidt straightened up.

"Don't I?" he asked and swung but Steve blocked it with his shield.

Schmidt's fist left a dent in the steel. Steve gaped, surprised. When he looked up, Schmidt hammered him down. Schmidt loomed over him.

"Erskine said your experiment was a failure." Steve said stunned but kicked up, driving his feet into Schmidt's jaw and Schmidt tumbled to the floor.

Zola scrambled to the catwalk controls. A gap appeared between Schmidt and Steve as both sides retract. Schmidt shot a withering look at Zola who paled. When Schmidt turned back to Steve his face was askew. Red skin bulged from torn seamed.

"A failure? Oh, no, Captain." Schmidt said and got to his feet. "I was his greatest success." he said then pulled, peeling his face from the bone, revealing Red Skull underneath.

He grind, hideous and Steve stared in disbelief.

"You don't have one of those, do you?" Bucky asked and gaped, then looked at Steve worriedly.

Red Skull tossed his mask away and Schmidt's face wafted into the flames, staring at us as it fell.

"You're a liar, Captain. You pretend to be a simple soldier. But in reality you're just afraid to admit we've left humanity behind." Red Skull said and another explosion rocked the floor below. "Unlike you, I embrace it proudly. Without the masquerade...without fear."

"Then how come you're running?" Steve asked and scowled from the end of the catwalk, helpless.

Then Zola hands Skull back his titanium box. Then the two of them step into the elevator and disappear. Steve pulled Bucky away as explosions rocked the catwalk. They saw a gantry above.

On the roof Zola eyed Skull's exposed head, queasy. Finally, he looked away and noticed the floor Indicator.

"Sir? We're going to the roof?" Zola said and Red Skull remained silent.

Then the doors open, revealing a catwalk leading to a waiting triebflugel built for one.

"But...what about me?" he continued and Red Skull handed him a set of car keys.

"Not a scratch, Doctor." Red Skull said and left the elevator.

Zola stared at the keys as the doors close.

Meanwhile Steve and Bucky reach the gantry and Bucky ran on and it creaked.

Steve stepped on.

"Hurry." he said and Bucky carefully limped across the gantry but rivets fell.

Meanwhile Morita leaded the injured P.O.W.'s toward the woods. Just then, something roared overhead. He looked up at the triebflulugel, its rotating engines whirling into a blur.

At the Triebflulugel Skull glanced out the cockpit. Below, his factory burned. He could make out a car speeding down a lonely road.

On Schmidt's car files slid on the seat as Zola sped away. His feet barely reached the pedals.

Meanwhile Bucky jumped form the end of the gantry to the other side. Just then , another bomb exploded and the gantry collapsed. Steve stood alone, trapped. Bucky looked around, frantic.

"There's got to be a rope or something." Bucky said.

"JUST GET OUT!" Steve said and the explosions came faster now.

"Not without you." Bucky said and the roof around Steve fell in and eyed the impossible gap.

"Aw, hell." Steve said, backed up and raced for the edge.

Bucky's eyes went wide as Steve leapt, sailing over the blazing chaos. Just as the biggest bomb yet went off.

At camp Phillips stared out his window, stoic.

"Senator Brandt, I regret to report that Captain Steven G. Rogers went missing behind enemy lines on the 3rd of last week." Phillips said and looked down to read the rough draft on his notepad. "Aerial reconnaissance has proven unfruitful. As a result, I must declare Captain Rogers killed in action."

The corporal stopped typing and he turned to see Peggy standing in the door, red-eyed and tired.

"The last surveillance flight is back." Peggy said, entered and laid down aerial pictures of the disintegrated HYDRA camp. "No sign of activity." she said and he gazed at the photos then looked ti the corporal

"Corporal. Why don't you go get a cup of coffee?" he asked and the corporal nodded and left the room. "I can't touch Stark. He's a civilian...and the Army's number one weapons contractor. You're neither."

"You'll have my resignation in the morning."

"I can probably make it so that you'll avoid a court martial."

"With respect, sir, I don't regret my actions. And I doubt Captain Rogers did, either."

"What makes you think I give a damn about your opinions?" he asked and she went cold while he stepped forward. "I took a chance on you, Agent Carter. Now that boy-and a lot of other men-are dead, because you had a crush."

"It wasn't that." she said. "I had faith." she said quietly.

"Well, I hope that's a great comfort to you when they shut this division down." he said and a commotion built outside. "What the hell's going on out there?" he asked and saw soldiers running by his window so they moved closer.

Then they stepped outside to see dozens of soldiers hurrying toward the camp entrance. The soldiers part, revealing Steve and Bucky walking up the road, leading a squad of P.O.W.'S. Ragtag vehicles follow, carrying the rest.

Steve's uniform hung filthy and torn. His shield was battered and bent. But his head was high. G.I.'s cheer, more come running.

Hodge stepped out of the barracks, drying his hair and stopped stunned.

"Rogers?" he said.

Amazed, Phillips looked to Peggy, who wiped away tears and the stunned crowd parted. Steve saluted Phillips.

"Colonel, some of these men need medical attention." Steve said so Phillips looked at the gaunt faces of the men, nodded and Medics rushed in to help the P.O.W.'s. "I'd like to surrender myself for disciplinary action." he said and Phillips looked at his battered, burnt shield.

"That won't be necessary." Phillips said.

"Sir, I78."
"Just how many orders do you plan on disobeying, Captain?" Phillips asked and they lock eyed and Steve smiled.

"Yes, sir."

Phillips turned to Peggy, smiling wryly.

"Faith, huh?" he said and walked away as Steve turned to Peggy.

She stopped herself from hugging him.

"You're late." she said and he pulled out the Stark transponder in pieces.

"Sorry, couldn't call my ride." he said.

They stared at each other a long, lingering minute. Then soldiers, including those who booed him at the USO show, crowd around slapping Bucky on the back. They waved his comic book, yelling for Captain America. Then flashbulbs pop.

Steve smiled despite himself, finally accepted and a nurse approached Bucky.

"Where do you hurt, soldier." a nurse asked and a slow smile creeped across his face.

We don't need

Then he laid on his left and thought about when Steve asked them to work with him.

At The Whip and Fiddle Pub.

"Let me get this straight." Dugan said.

Falsworth, Jones, Dernier, Morita, and Dugan leaned on stools and Steve lined up at a dart board.

"We barely got out of there alive and you want us to go back?" Jones asked and Steve weighed a dart, then casually tossed a bullseye.

"Pretty much." Steve said and they look at each other for a minute.

"I'm in." Morita said and Steve saw Dernier, questioning but nodded.

"Je combattrai jusqu'a ce que le dernier de ces batards soit mort, echaine ou bien qu'il pleure comme un nouveau-ne!" he said.

"J'espere touts les trois!" Jones said laughing.

Dernier laughed, clapping Jones on the shoulder. When they looked up, they saw the others not understanding a word.

"Oh, uh, we're in." Janes continued.

Then Dugan finished a beer, mustache covered in foam.

"I'll fight. Well, I'll always fight. But you gotta do one thing for me." he said.

"What's that?" Steve asked and handed over his empty pint glass.

"Open a tab."

The others laughed and hand Steve theirs. Steve grinned and took the glasses back to the bar where Bucky waited.

Then Steve slid over the empties.

"Another round?" Steve asked and the bartender looked impressed.

"You drink all these yourself? ALT. Where are they putting all this? ALT. It is possible to run out you know." the bartender said and Steve shrugged and turned to Bucky.

"That was the easiest battle of the war." Bucky said.

"What about you? You gonna follow Captain America into the jaws of death?" Steve asked.

"Hell no. That little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb to run away from a fight? I'm following him." Bucky said and nodded at a tour poster of Captain America: "PERFORMANCE CANCELLED - NOT TO BE RESCHEDULED." "But you're keeping this outfit, right?"

"Don't get your hopes up. It's not exactly regulation."

"I dunno. You saw those guys in Italy when you came back." Bucky said. "I don't think they were cheering just for you."

The invaders sang, arms wrapped drunkenly around one another.

One by one, they stopped as they notice Peggy entering the bar.

Steve was the last to see her.

"Captain." Peggy said.

"Agent Carter." Steve said standing.

"Ma'am." Bucky said.

"Howard's got some equipment for you to try. Tomorrow morning?" Peggy said.

"That sounds fine." Steve said and the Invaders started singing terribly again.

"I see your crack squad is prepping for duty."

"You don't like music?" Bucky said.

"I do, actually." she said. "I may even, when this is all over, go dancing." she said eying Steve and Bucky grinned and nodded at the dance floor.

"Then what are we waiting for?"

"The right partner." she said, smiled at Steve and headed out. "08:00, Captain."

"Yes ma'am. I'll be there." Steve said and Bucky stared, puzzled and Steve pated him on the shoulder. "Maybe she's got a friend."

Then he laid on his right and thought about the times he worked with Steve.

If I lay here

At France HYDRA factory a door crashed open, revealing Steve dressed in his red, white and blue battle uniform, firing a Tommy gun. TITLE: "FRANCE, DECEMBER 1943." Bullets ping off his red, white and blue vibranium shield. The Invaders pour in behind him, blasting away.

At Allied HDQ, briefing room Peggy replaced an X with an SSR flag on the Hydra map.

At Belgum HYDRA factory Steve and the invaders fan out across the blazing battleground, wreaking havoc. TITLE: "BELGIUM, JANUARY 1944."

Skull roars up to the ruined factory in his car. He glares at the destruction as his windshield reflects the flames.

At Poland HYDRA factory Steve stalked a bombed-out factory. TITLE: "POLAND, FEBRUARY 1944." The scope whipped to see A HYDRA gunman aiming at him. The sniper fell and Steve clocked it and gave the thumbs up to the camera. Bucky grinned behind the gun.

At the Briefing Room Peggy replaced another X with an SSR flag and looked down to the next X, somewhere in Poland.

At Czechoslovakia HYDRA factory the Invaders scrambled out the side doors of a HYDRA factory. They dive for cover and wait. No explosion. They peer out from their cover then Steve crashed through a factory window on his motorcycle and the factory behind him exploded. He hit the ground, roaring toward the camera.

TITLE: "CZECHOSLOVAKIA, AUGUST 1944."

In frozen woods the woods stood white and silent. Then six white figures rise out of the snow like ghosts. The invaders shake off the snow and creep forward. Then a seventh figure rises: Steve in full red, white and blue.

A rifle cracked, a bullet pinged off his shield. He spun and hurled his shield. A HYDRA sniper fell out of a far tree. The Invaders gape.

At Allied HQ briefing room Peggy dropped a Hydra flag into a box and picked up an SSR flag. She stuck it in the map.

In a HYDRA factory Steve and Jones rode in the back of a jeep as Dugan drove away from the burning factory. A HYDRA fighter plane swooped over them, guns blazing.

Steve blocked with his shield as Jones opened up his .30 CAL.

The plane bearded down and Jones stitched it up the middle. It caught fire, spun out of control and crashed ahead of them. Dugan slowed to a stop. The three of them stared, impressed.

In a forest Dernier ran through the woods, a bomb tucked under his arm. Parallel to him, a HYDRA fast track raced along a road. Dernier rolled under the fast track and magnet the bomb to the bottom of the vehicle as it roared over him. He jumped to his feet in time to see the fast track explode.

On the battlefield the Invaders race across a field as the land Kruezer bear down on them. They're almost to safety when Dugan's hat flew off his head, landing in the path of the oncoming tank. Dugan ran back for it. The rest of the men shout and Dugan dove, grabbing the bowler and rolling out of the way. He wedged the hat on his head, smug. Then he realized the tank turned and was coming right at him. Then, from nowhere Steve dove over him and grabbed the tank's cannon barrel. He flipped himself into the air and landed atop the turret.

Steve saw a glowing energy housing, marked: "EXPLOSIVE!" and raised his shield high and brought it down. The tank grind to a halt.

Steve raised the shield again and the house crackled. Sparks fly.

Then he brought the shield down one last time and an ominous drone began to rise. He took a running leap off the tails as the tank explodes.

At Allied HQ briefing Room Peggy and Phillips watched the footage. Falsworth and Dernier were drinking from their canteens. Dugan drank from a flask. Bucky and Steve survey a valley and Steve's open compass. Taped to the inside is a newspaper photograph of Peggy. Peggy leaned forward, shocked. Steve stared pissed and snapped the compass shut.

Phillips eyed Peggy, amused and she stared at the screen and smiled.

If I just lay here

Then he laid on his back again and thought about when he fell.

TITLE: "RUSSIA, JANUARY 1945."

Steve and the invaders gathered on a high plateau. Morita crouched over the transceiver, Jones listened to the transmission, Falsworth wielded binoculars, Dugan and Dernier adjust a winch at the cliff's edge and Steve and Bucky stood in conversation.

"The engineer just radioed ahead. Hydra dispatch gave him permission to open the throttle." Jones said slipping off headphones. "Whatever's on this train, they must need it bad."

"Well, they're not going to get it." Morita said.

"I wouldn't be so sure..." Falsworth started.

In the distance, was a far-off, speeding train.

"Because they're moving like the devil." he said.

Steve checked his rifle and Bucky looked over the cliff's edge.

"Remember when I made you ride the Cyclone at Coney Island?" Bucky asked.

"And I threw up?" Steve asked and Bucky looked over the edge again, leery.

"This isn't payback, is it?" Bucky asked and Steve looked up with a grin.

"Now why would I do a thing like that?"

"Jerk."

"Punk."

Then a train whistle shrieked through the pass and a futuristic HYDRA train approached.

"All aboard, gentlemen! Mind the gap!" Falsworth said.

Steve, Bucky and Jones attached T-bars to the cable.

"Okay, this is a very short, very fast train. We've got a ten-second window, tops. Mistime it and you're a bug on the windshield." Steve said to Bucky and Jones.

Dugan checked the speed of the train against his watch.

"Better move it, bugs." he said.

Steve, Bucky and Jones hooked to the cable stretching across the pass. Dernier raised his hand and dropped it.

Then Steve jumped, shooting away and Jones and Bucky followed.

On the HYDRA train, roof the train rocketed along.

Steve, Bucky and Jones dropped hard onto the slick roof and met eyes.

On the HYDRA train real car Steve kicked open the back door. He and Bucky rushed in, weapons ready, only to find nothing. They looked at each other and Steve headed for the next car.

On the roof, Jones crawled toward the engine.

In the Middle car Bucky and Steve bang into the next car and found it empty.

"I thought they were supposed to be hauling something." Bucky said and Steve unhooked his shield, wary.

"They were." he said and yanked open the next connecting door, stepping into another darkened car.

They crept forward then a steel plate dropped over the door sealing them in.

The lights brighten, revealing... a HYDRA trooper. Six and a half feet Tall and heavily armored, both of his arms sport huge cannons. Steve and Bucky open fire, but their machine gun bullets ping uselessly off the trooper's armor.

The trooper took aim at Steve. The blue pulse blowed the shield out of his hand and slammed him into the back wall.

The shield clanged to the floor. The trooper turned to Bucky and fired and Bucky dove. The blast ripped a hole in the wall behind them, outside, a jagged ravine whipped past the moonlight. A red light blinked from a camera on the ceiling.

At the engineer booth Zola watched on a monitor as the trooper pressed in on Bucky and leaned into a microphone.

"No. Finish the other one." Zola said.

At the forward car trooper turned back to Steve as he got to his feet. The trooper aimed at the star on Steve's chest. Bucky grabbed Steve's shield off the floor and leapt in front.

"Bucky, no!" Steve said.

The cannon fired, hitting Bucky square in the shield blowing him through the hole in the wall. With a last desperate effort, Buck snagged the jagged edge. The trooper's weapon was momentarily spent by the blast. As it started to power back up. Steve lunges, grabbing Bucky's slipping hand. Steve started pulling him back in. Then The Trooper fired, vaporizing Bucky's arm Into a blue mist.

On the roof, Jones stared in horror as Bucky's body whipped away, tumbling into a bottomless gorge.

Back at the forward car Steve reached out in anguish.

"BUCKY!" he said but the only response was wind and the clatter of train wheels.

I don't quite know

Then he laid on his left again and thought about the times he fought him when he was the Winter Soldier.

How to say

Suddenly Fury was shot three times from through the wall and collapsed, Steve looked out the window for the shooter then quickly dragged Fury to the next room, before he left him handed him the flash drive.

"Don't... trust anyone." Fury continued and passed out.

Then Steve heard someone breaking in and heard his neighbor calling out to him.

"Captain Rogers?" Sharon said and he saw her walking in with her gun pointed. "Captain, I'm Agent 13 of SHIELD Special Service."

"Kate?" Steve said.

"I'm assigned to protect you."

"On whose order?" he asked and she noticed Fury lying injured on the ground.

"His." she said and went to Fury then contacted SHIELD through her radio. "Foxtrot is down, he's unresponsive. I need EMTs."

"Do you have a twenty on the shooter?" a SHIELD agent said and Steve saw the shooter though the window.

"Tell him I'm in pursuit." he said, smashed through his window and ran after the assassin

Then he chased him through an office building smashing through the walls, when he finally caught up with him on the roof he threw his shield at the assassin, but he caught it with one swift move, threw it back to him, jumped down the building and disappeared.

How I feel

Suddenly the Winter Soldier landed on the car roof, pulled Sitwell out through the window and threw him into the oncoming traffic, killing him, then he started shooting at them until Captain America pulled the break handle making the Winter Soldier drop down onto the street, as another car smashed into the trio's car and pushed them along, the Winter Soldier jumped back onto their car, smashed through the windscreen and pulled out the steering wheel.

"Shit!" Falcon said and Black Widow started shooting at him but the Winter Soldier jumped onto the vehicle behind them.

As their car got pulled off the road Captain America held on to the car door.

"Hang on!" he said, broke open the door, holding onto them, they sli on the car door through the streets.

The Winter Soldier was joined by HYDRA agents and they started shooting at them, they scattered and ran off in different directions with the Winter Soldier shooting at Black Widowwbut she managed to shoot him in his eye goggle mask and run off.

"She's mine. I'll take care of her. Find him." the Winter Soldier said and went in pursuit of her as the Hydra agents went after Captain America and Falcon who both manage to fend them off as they shot at them.

Then Captain America noticed the Winter Soldier in pursuit of Black Widow.

"Go, I got this!" Falcon said.

The Winter Soldier thought he's found Black Widow hiding behind a car as he heard her voice.

"I make an LZ, twenty-three hundred block of Virginia Avenue. Rendezvous two minutes. Taking fire above and below expressway. Civilians threatened. Repeat, civilians threatened." Black Widow said and he rolled a bomb towards there thinking she's hiding. As it rolled behind the car Black Widow wasn't there but a recording over her voice is being played back on a phone. "I make an LZ, twenty-three hundred block at Virginia Avenue. Rendezvous two minutes." she said and the bomb exploded.

Black Widow jumped onto the Winter Soldier's back and tried to strangle him.

He threw her off, and tried shooting her, only for her to throw an electric device which shocked his electric arm before running off.

He removed the device, and recalibrated his arm.

"GET OUT OF THE WAY! STAY OUT OF THE WAY!" Black Widow said to the civilians as she tried getting away from the Winter Soldier.

Suddenly she got shot in the shoulder and fell down. She looked around her, only for the Winter Soldier to come up for behind, ready to shoot her again.

Then Captain America jumped in and blocked a punch from the latter with his shield before he kicked him away, followed by him blocking a few bullets from the Winter Soldier's Colt M4A1, Škorpion vz. 61, and SIG-Sauer P220ST.

The Winter Soldier briefly took Captain America's shield, and threw it at him, but Captain America managed to avoid being hit. Then they fiercely battle it out.

Eventually, Captain America managed to stop the Winter Soldier's arm, and threw him away, the latter's mask falling off in the process.

He landed and looked at an aghast Captain America, who by just looking at him, learned his true identity.

"Bucky...?" Captain America said.

"Who the hell is Bucky?" Bucky asked.

As he aimed his pistol at Captain America, Falcon flew in and kicked Bucky aside.

Bucky had a brief look of realization, but quickly brushed it aside, and took aim again, but before he could shoot Black Widow used the grenade launcher he dropped against him.

Then he vanished in the smoke of the explosion.

Those three words

"Don't worry, I got it." Captain America said and Bucky watched him from above the Helicarrier.

As everyone at the Triskelion rushed around trying to evacuate the building Brock fought and killed some SHIELD agents.

Inside the Helicarrier Captain America was confronted by the Winter Soldier.

"People are gonna die, Buck. I can't let that happen." Captain America said and the Winter Soldier stares at him coldly. "Please, don't make me do this."

Seeing the Winter Soldier wouldn't back down Captain America threw his shield at him and they started battling each other, as they fight Captain America managed to bring up the targeting blade system, but as the Winter Soldier attacked him the chip fell from Captain America's hand; back at the Council.

Back at the Helicarrier Captain America and the Winter Soldier were battling it out and the Winter Soldier stabbed Captain America in the shoulder with his knife and then grabbed the fallen chip, but Captain America managed to get the knife out, grabbed the Winter Soldier by the throat and threw him down, armlocks him.

"Drop it! Drop it!" Captain America said as the Winter Soldier kept holding the chip.

Then Captain America broke his arm and held onto his throat until he passed out and let go of the chip, then he grabbed the chip and rushed off; back at the Triskelion.

Captain America desperately tried getting back up to the Helicarriers to get to the targeting system when the Winter Soldier became conscious and shot at him in the left thigh and then the right shoulder, but Captain America managed to climb up.

"Stand by." Captain America said and got the chip out. "Charlie..." he said but the Winter Soldier shot him in the stomach and he fell.

On the helicarrier's bridge.

"We've reached three thousand feet. Sat link coming online now." Charlie weapons tech said.

"Deploy algorithm." Charlie XO said.

"Algorithm deployed."

"We are go to targets." Pierce said on the radio.

Then Hill watched as the weapons were being targeted at Washington, the White house, the Pentagon, Stark Tower, aiming to kill over 700,00 people.

"Target saturation reached. All targets assigned." Charlie weapons tech said.

"Fire when ready." Charlie XO said.

"Firing in, three, two, one."

At that moment Steve managed to get up and put the chip in the Helicarrier's targeting blade overriding the system and locking it down.

"Charlie locked." Captain America said as they watched the targets go offline.

"Where are the targets? Where are the targets?" Charlie XO tech asked.

"Okay, Cap, get out of there." Hill said then got the Helicarriers weapon targets to open fire upon each other.

"Fire now." Captain America said.

"But, Steve..."

"Do it! Do it now!" he said and reluctantly she made the Helicarriers open fire on each other.

Captain America was still inside the Helicarrier looked at the Winter Soldier below him; back at the Triskelion Pierce watched the Helicarriers as they fired at each other.

Inside the third Helicarrier Captain America helped the Winter Soldier out from being trapped under some fallen rubble.

"You know me." Captain America said and the Winter Soldier lashed out at him in anger.

"NO, I DON'T!" the Winter Soldier said.

"Bucky, you've known me your whole life." Steve said and the Winter Soldier hit him but he choose not to fight back. "Your name... is James Buchanan Barnes." he said and the Winter Soldier hit him again.

"SHUT UP!"

"I'm not gonna fight you." Captain America said, took off his mask and dropped his shield out of the Helicarrier. "You're my friend." he said but the Winter Soldier pushed him to the ground.

"You're my mission." the Winter Soldier said and mercilessly punched him repeatedly across the face "YOU'RE. MY. MISSION!"

"Then finish it..." Captain America said but the Winter Soldier hesitated holding his fist up. "Cause I'm with you... to the end of the line."

The Winter Soldier looked at him as if he's starting to remember just then the bottom of the Helicarrier fell sending Captain America down into the river below as the Winter Soldier watched from the Helicarrier, then Captain America was unconscious and being pulled out of the water and dragged onto the shore by the Winter Soldier before he turned and walked away.

Are said too much

Then he laid on his back again and thought about when he saw the day he was found and turned into the Winter Soldier.

They're not enough

Inside a bank vault, the HYDRA agents fix Bucky's metal arm and as they did he had a brief flashback to his old life after he was recovered by Zola and the HYDRA agents.

"Sergeant Barnes..." Zola said as he had a flashback to falling off the train at the edge of the mountain with Steve trying to save him.

"Bucky, no!" Steve said and he had flashback to after he's picked up by Hydra agents.

"The procedure has already started." Zola said and the Hydra agent amputating his left arm and replacing with the metal arm. "You are to be the new fist of HYDRA." he said to his men. "Put him on ice." he said and Bucky being frozen.

Then he came back to the present and knocked over the HYDRA agent fixing his arm and Rollins pointed his gun at him to stop him attacking any further.

As Pierce entered the bank vault Bucky was being held in.

"Sir, he's...he's unstable. Erratic." Scientists 1 said and Pierce entered with Brock and some other HYDRA agents and went over to Bucky.

"Mission report." Pierce said and Bucky; looking blank, didn't respond. "Mission report, now." he said and moved closer to Bucky and suddenly struck him hard in the face.

"The man on the bridge..." Bucky said and had a flashback to Steve calling him by his name. "Who was he?"

"You met him earlier this week on another assignment."

"I knew him." Bucky said and Pierce sat in front of him.

"Your work has been a gift to mankind. You shaped the century, and I need you to do it one more time. Society is at a tipping point between order and chaos. Tomorrow morning we're gonna give it a push. But, if you don't do your part, I can't do mine, and HYDRA can't give the world the freedom it deserves."

"But I knew him." Bucky said and Pierce turned to the scientists.

"Prep him."

"He's been out of cryo-freeze too long." Scientist 1 said.

"Then wipe him and start over." Pierce said and the scientists strapped Bucky in his chair and then put a teeth shield in his mouth as they started the process of wiping his brain with him screaming in pain.

Bucky was in civilian clothes at the Captain America exhibit in the Smithsonian Museum staring pensively at the display about himself.

Then he thought about when Steve found him.

Forget what we're told

In his dark blue, armored suit with his shield on his arm Captain America was in a small apartment looking around found a notebook on top of the fridge. He picked it up and opened it. There were tabs of varying colors sticking out from amongst the pages.

"Heads up, Cap. German Special Forces, approaching from the south." Falcon said on the radio.

"Understood." Captain America said then saw Bucky standing behind him and slowly turned around to face him. "Do you know me?"

"You're Steve. I read about you in a museum." the Winter Soldier said.

"They've set the perimeter." Falcon said.

"I know you're nervous. And you have plenty of reason to be. But you're lying." Captain America said.

"I wasn't in Vienna. I don't do that anymore." the Winter Soldier said.

"They're entering the building." Falcon said.

"Well, the people who think you did are coming here now. And they're not planning on taking you alive." Captain America said.

"That's smart. Good strategy." the Winter Soldier said.

They're on the roof. I'm compromised." Falcon said and armed cops ran upstairs.

"This doesn't have end in a fight, Buck." Captain America said.

Outside the door a cop readied a battering ram.

"It always ends in a fight." the Winter Soldier said.

"5 seconds." Falcon said.

"You pulled me from the river. Why?" Captain America said.

"I don't know." the Winter Soldier said.

"3 seconds!" Falcon said.

"Yes, you do." Captain America said.

"Breach! Breach! Breach!" Falcon said and a grenade crashed through the window.

The Winter Soldier kicked it to Captain America, and he smothered it with his shield.

"Shoot the door!" GSG-9 Soldier said and the cop slammed the battering ram against the door.

The Winter Soldier shield himself with the mattress against an attack from the window. He blocked the door with a table as cops swung in on cables. Captain America pulled the rug from under a policeman, sending him flying and the Winter Soldier slammed another policeman into the wall.

"Buck, stop! You're gonna kill someone." Captain America said.

"I'm not gonna kill anyone." the Winter Soldier said and slammed him down and punched a hole in the floor.

He grab beda backpack from under the floorboards and threw it out of the window. Then they got behind Captain America's shield to avoid gunfire and the Winter Soldier shoved Captain America and he knocked a cop over. He held up his metal hand and repelled bullets, then slammed a cop into shelves. Then he picked up a large cement brick and slammed it into a cop. Captain America fought a cop on the balcony. A cop shot around the door outside. The Winter Soldier punched through the wall beside he door and laid into the cops. A cop descended through a sky-light on a zip wire. The Winter Soldier grabbed the cop's gun and slammed him into the wall. Then he bashed a couple of cops with the battering ram. More of the police team hurry up the stairwell. the Winter Soldier jumped on the zip-line-guy and swung down a level.

"Suspect has broken containment! He's headed down the east stairwell!" GSG-9 Soldier said.

Captain America grabbed the radio and crushed it then jumped down a level as the Winter Soldier kept punching the cops. Then he tossed one of them over the railing and Captain America caught him, stopping the cop from falling. He looked at the Winter Soldier wearily.

"Come on, man." Captain America said and threw the cop up onto the landing.

The Winter Soldier broke a banister and swung down on it. Captain America hurled a cop over his shoulders. The Winter Soldier laid into jet more cops and took them out. A cop aimed at him and Captain America knocked the gun from his hands with his shield which stuck in the wall. Then the Winter Soldier leapt down the stairwell and caught onto a railing and Captain America pulled his shield out of the wall. The Winter Soldier climbed up then ran along a corridor and leapt off a balcony. He tumbled onto the lower roof of the neighboring building where he found where his backpack, picked it up and ran.

Then Black Panther slammed into him from behind, knocking him down. Then Black Panther extended his fingers and sharp claws popped out and he attacks the Winter Soldier with sweeping kicks and slashes. The Winter Soldier fought back but was kicked into a wall. Black Panther swiped his claws and spun gracefully. The Winter Soldier narrowly avoided being slashed and held up a metal bar to protect himself.

Meanwhile Captain America looked down at them as Falcon swooped from the sky.

"Sam, southwest rooftop." Captain America said.

"Who the hell's the other guy?" Falcon asked.

"About to find out." Captain America said and leapt from the balcony down onto the neighboring building as a chopper flew up.

Black Panther lunged at the Winter Soldier with his claws, but the Winter Soldier grabbed his wrists. A soldier fired a machine gun from the chopper. The ammo bounced off Black Panther's armored suit.

"Sam." Captain America said.

"Got him." Falcon said, flew down and shoved the chopper off course.

Then he swooped towards street level.

The Winter Soldier broke free from his attacker, slung his bag on his back, ran and jumped down a level. Black Panther slides down the wall using his claws for traction. Back landed at street level and the chase continued. Captain America followed and landed rolling along the ground. Gunfire from the chopper tore up the sidewalk. The Winter Soldier jumped down through an opening and landed in an underpass, he ran through the traffic and Black Panther and Captain America dropped down and chased after him. Then a Special Forces Vehicle pursued them.]

"Stand down! Stand down!" GSG-9 Driver said and the vehicle closed in, blue lights flashing.

Captain America leapt onto the vehicle and splintered the windshield. The driver stopped, Captain America yanked him from the vehicle and kicked the windshield out, then drove off.

The Winter Soldier ran over the top of a speeding car, outpacing it. Black Panther was a few cars behind, keeping pace with him. He leapt on the back of the 4x4 that Captain America's driving. Captain America swerveed from side to side, trying to throw him off.

"Sam, I can't shake this guy." Captain America said.

"Right behind you." Falcon said.

Several police cars join the chase. Captain America side-swiped another car and drove on.

Up ahead the Winter Soldier reached a fork in the road and faced oncoming traffic. He leapt over a barrier. Captain America drove through the barrier.

A motorbike sped towards the Winter Soldier and the Winter Soldier grabbed the handlebar and spun the bike around in mid air, throwing the rider off. Then he got on the bike and rode away sending cars careering out of the way. Captain America kept on the Winter Soldier's tail with Black Panther holding onto the back of the 4x4. They all rocket through another underpass. Falcon flew into the underpass. Black Panther leapt off the front of the 4x4 onto the Winter Soldier's motorbike. The Winter Soldier flung him over his head and the bike leaned down on its side. He kicked his assailant away, straightens up and rode on. Black Panther caught a ride on Falcon's leg and Falcon tried to kick him away. The Winter Soldier threw a sticky bomb and blew up the roof at the end of the underpass, bringing down tons of rubble. Black Panther leapt off from Falcon and threw the Winter Soldier off the motorbike. Captain America swerved the 4x4 through the rubble, leapt out and pulled Black Panther away from the Winter Soldier. Captain America stands, facing sleek and muscular Black Panther. Armed police arrive and surround them, guns aimed. War Machine leapt down from above and raised both hands.

"Stand down, now." War Machine said and the Winter Soldier stands beside Captain America who put his shield on his back. "Congratulations, Cap. You're a criminal." he said and police moved in and force the Winter Soldier to his knees.

Black Panther raised his hands. A cop moves Captain America's arms behind his back. Black Panther retracted his claws and pulled off his mask revealing his face. It's T'Challa. Captain America and Rhodes looked curious.

"What's the order?" GSG-9 Soldier asked.

"Your highness." War Machine said and the Winter Soldier's hauled flat on the ground.

Then he thought about when Steve saved him.

Show me a garden that's bursting into life

As Sam entered Bucky swung his fist which smashed through the wall as Sam ducked. Bucky grabbed him by the jaw and threw him at the open pod. Steve lurched into the fight and landed a punch which Bucky barely felt. Bucky kicked and punched Steve out of the chamber. A punch from Bucky went through the elevator door. Steve blocked the next one but the power of Bucky's fist sent him tumbling into the darkened elevator shaft.

In the chamber Sam came around and saw Helmut looking down the elevator shaft.

"The east wing is compromised. I repeat: the east wing is compromised." the man on PA 1 said.

"Hey." Sam said and Helmut bolt and Sam raised.

Outside staff flee the building en masse. Falcon was among them and quickly saw something on the ground and picked it up.

"Damn it." he said, looked around the wide courtyard and scowled.

Meanwhile the Winter Soldier was on the rooftop helipad. He marched up to a blue chopper and pulled the lock off the door and got in the pilot seat. Then Captain America rushed outside and sprints toward the rising chopper. He leapt, grabbed the landing gear and pulled hard and the chopper struggled to gain height. Captain America's feet kicked for traction then he got them flat on the helipad. The chopper dragged him onto the weak looking mesh framing the helipad. Captain America grabbed the railing with one hand and clung to the landing gear with the other. He grit his teeth and his neck strained with the incredible effort. The Winter Soldier glowered from inside the chopper then threw the joystick left and the chopper's nose slammed into the edge of the helipad. The rotor-blades were smashed to pieces and Captain America ducked as the tail swung around. The chopper lied twisted on the mesh at the edge of the pad and Captain America rose beside the canopy. the Winter Soldier's arm smashed through the glass and growling he grabbed his throat. The chopper started listing over the edge and the tail broke off and fell into the river below. The Winter Soldier kept hold of Captain America as the whole vehicle dropped and slammed into the river. The impact seemed to knock the Winter Soldier out cold and he let go of Captain America. The body of the chopper sunk quickly to the riverbed along with other debris and Captain America surfaced with the Winter Soldier in his arms.

Then he thought about when they found Zemo.

Chasing cars

Captain America brought his Quinjet into land beside Helmut's caterpillar truck on the remote icy mountain top. The jet's wings fold up beside the fuselage.

On board the Winter Soldier pulled out rack of guns labeled 'Romanoff' and took a light machine gun. Then he and Captain America stand together, waiting for the exit ramp to descend.

"You remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?" Captain America asked.

"Was that the time we used our train money to buy hot dogs?" the Winter Soldier asked.

"You blew three bucks trying to win that stuffed bear for a redhead."

"What was her name again?"

"Dolores. You called her Doll."

"She's gotta be a hundred years old right now."

"So are we, pal." Captain America said and clamped his hand on the Winter Soldier's shoulder.

Now wearing his helmet Captain America walked with the Winter Soldier up to the entrance set in rock. The door was still open.

"He can't have been here more than a few hours." Captain America said .

"Long enough to wake them up." the Winter Soldier said and Captain America lead them into the cast bunker.

They traveled down into the depths inside a caged elevator. it stopped in the bowls of the bunker, doors slide open. Captain America nodded to the Winter Soldiers and heaved up the cage door. The Winter Soldiers readied his heavy duty machine gun and they walked along a corridor, keeping close to a wall. He looked into an alcove full of junk then they moved on up some stairs. At the sound of a loud thud they spun around, aiming down the corridor.

"You ready?" Captain America asked.

"Yeah." the Winter Soldiers said.

Double doors part, forced open by Iron Man. Captain America stared in surprise and Iron Man walked towards them and retracted the suit's helmet.

"You seem a little defensive." Tony said and the Winter Soldiers kept his gun up while Captain America walked to meet iron Man with his shield covering his body.

"It's been a long day."

"At ease, Soldier. I'm not currently after you."

"Then why are you here?"

"Could be your story's not so crazy. Maybe. Ross has no idea I'm here. I'd like to keep it that way. Otherwise, I gotta arrest myself."

"Well, that sounds like a lot of paperwork." Captain America said. "It's good to see you, Tony." he said and lowered his shield.

"You too, Cap." Tony said. "Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop . . ." he said to the Winter Soldiers.

Captain America signed the Winter Soldiers to lower his weapon and he does.

They cautiously walked along a corridor. T'Challa in his Black Panther Suit was hiding around a corner, watching them.

With his helmet and face plate reengaged Iron Man lead Captain America and the Winter Soldiers towards the enormous chamber with the capsules standing in it.

"I got heat signatures." Iron Man said.

"How many?" Captain America asked.

"Uh, one."

As they entered the vast chamber the lights came on and hazy, yellow mist descended within the capsules. As well as Josef, each one contains an enhanced soldier from the 1991 experiment. Captain America and the others looked around, bewildered.

"If it's any comfort, they died in their sleep." Helmut said on speaker. "Did you really think I wanted more of you?" he said and all the enhanced soldiers have been shot in the head and the Winter Soldiers stared at Josef's corpse.

"What the hell?" the Winter Soldiers said.

"I'm grateful to them, though. They brought you here." Helmut said and appeared in a control room. Captain America hurled his shield but it flew back. "Please, Captain. The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets."

"I'm betting I could beat that." Iron Man said.

"Oh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time. But then you'd never know why you came."

"You killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?" Captain America said.

Meanwhile Black Panther watched from the shadows as Captain America looked at Helmut through a window.

"I thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized . . . there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw." Helmut said.

"You're Sokovian. Is that what this is about?" Capitan America said.

"Sokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to hell. No. I'm here because I made a promise." Helmut said and Captain America studied him.

"You lost someone?"

"I lost everyone. And so will you." Helmut said, looked grave and clicked his tongue. "An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumples from within? That's dead . . . forever." he said and played surveillance footage from December 16th 1991 and Steve stepped over to the screen.

Iron Man looked at the freeze frame of a secluded road and the date, December 16 1991 and his eyes rove, anxiously.

"I know that road. What is this?" he asked.

The video played. That car that the Winter Soldier forced off the road crashes into a tree. Tony watched intently as the Winter Soldier rides up and gets off his motorbike. Steve watches Tony's increasing unease. The driver lies on the ground beside the car. It's Tony's father, Howard.

"Help my wife. Please. Help." Howard said and the Winter Soldier walked over and hoist him up by his hair and stared at Howard's bloody face and Howard stared back pleadingly. "Sergeant Barnes?"

"Howard!" Marie said.

Tony glared at Bucky while in the video the Winter Soldier pounded Howard hard in the face with his metal fist.

"Howard!" Maria said.

In grief Tony closed his eyes for a moment.

On screen Howard slumped dead. The Winter Soldier put him in the driver's seat with his face against the steering wheel.

Tony stared in horror.

Maria's in the passenger seat with blood streaked down her face. The Winter Soldier walked around, gripped her throat and expressionless strangled her. Tony watched the screen stunned. The Winter Soldier walked up and aimed a gun at the surveillance camera.

Steve watched Tony anxiously. Tony lunged towards Bucky and Steve stopped him.

"Tony. Tony." Steve said.

Tony consumed with grief and tears glistening in his eyes he turned and looked at him.

"Did you know?" he asked.

"I didn't know it was him."

"Don't bullshit me, Rogers! Did you know?"

"Yes."

Tony stepped back, his chin jutting upwards twitchy and reengaged the Iron Man helmet. He punched Steve to the floor and deflected gunfire from Bucky, disarming him. Then he grabbed Bucky and flew across the chamber. He slammed him onto the floor, then jumped on his arms. Steve's shield hit Iron Man, distracting him and Steve barged him backwards, Iron Man shoulders him to the floor and shackles his ankles. Bucky punched Iron Man who just lifted him and slammed him against a machine. Iron Man raised a fist but Bucky twisted it and a rocket shot out of Iron Man's arm, a fireball exploded. Steve sliced his shackles as a towering structure of pipework collapsed. Iron Man and Bucky were thrown down a level as twisted metal fell around them, showering sparks.

"Get out of here!" Steve said to Bucky.

As Bucky bolted Iron Man fired, but missed. Steve landed in front of him. Bucky hit a control panel and the silo-styled door overhead started to open.

"It wasn't him, Tony. Hydra had control of his mind!" Steve said.

"Move!" Iron Man said.

"It wasn't him!" Steve said, grabbed Iron Man's ankle in midair and smashed it.

Iron Man blocked him by shooting down rubble, then falteringly flew up the tower.

"Left boot jet failing. Flight systems compromised." FRIDAY said.

"Ah crap." Iron Man said.

Above him Bucky leapt from platform to platform. With stuttering jets Iron Man gave chase, then kicked Bucky and took aim, but the energy bold rebound off Steve's shield onto himself. Iron Man dropped like a stone and landed on a lower platform.

"He's not going to stop. Go." Steve said.

As Iron Man soar upwards, Steve leapt and shot a wire which wrapped around Iron Man's neck and dragged him back down. He deflected Steve's shield, then tried to target Bucky.

"Come on, come on." Iron Man said.

"Targeting system's knackered, boss." Friday said.

"I'm eyeballing it." he said and his helmet retracted and he shut one eye, taking aim at the opening hatch.

He fired and hit the giant hinge which exploded, cutting of Bucky's escape route. He flew up, blocks two swings from an iron pipe from him, then grabbed him around the neck from behind.

"Do you even remember them?"

"I remember all of them." Bucky said and pushed them both from the walkway, Steve jumped into them to deflect their fall.

Bucky landed on a platform while Iron Man and Steve landed on the concrete floor besides opening in the wall where snow drifts in from outside.

"This isn't gonna change what happened." Steve said.

"I don't care. He killed my mom." Iron Man said.

They trade punches and Iron Man ended up pinning Steve down. Bucky picked up Captain America's shield and leapt down to help. As the two super soldiers fist fight with Iron Man the shield changed hands between them until Iron Man managed to zap Steve who was thrown back into the wall. Bucky struggled to hold Iron Man at bay as he unleashed an energy beam, then he forced Iron Man against the opposite wall and gripped the glowing core in the chest of the Iron Man Suit. A blast of energy knocked Bucky down, metal arm completely blown away. Iron Man zapped him again. Steve rushed him with his shield up and Iron Man fired right at it.

Iron man and Steve were still fighting in the silo.

"You can't beat him hand to hand." FRIDAY said.

"Analyze his fight pattern." Tony said.

"Scanning!" she said and Iron Man's HUD flashed red as Steve landed blow after blow. "Countermeasures ready."

Iron man grabbed Captain America's shield.

"Let's kick his ass." he said and flung the shield away then zapped Steve backwards, head over heels.

Steve raised and Iron man blocked his punches then zapped him to his knees, right in front of Bucky who's lying on his back.

"He's my friend." Steve said.

"So was I." Iron man said and punched Steve then threw him back towards the gaps in the wall. "Stay down. Final warning."

Steve struggled to his feet, his face bloody and his gate weary and raised his fists and stared Iron Man down.

"I can do this all day." he said.

Iron man raised his left palm ready to fire. Bucky grabbed his leg and Iron Man spun, kicking him in the face. Steve grabbed Iron Man and lifted him over his head, then threw him down, punched him and bashed his mask off with his shield before striking down hard on the suit's core. Iron Man looked horrified and glowered fearfully at Steve who panted or breath. Both have blood spattered across their faces. Steve looked back at Iron man then shut his eyes and slumped down. The shield remained upright, stuck upright in the center of the Iron Man Suit. When Steve struggled up again he took hold of the shield, gripping the edge and pulling it free. He stepped away from Tony who rolled painfully onto his side. Bucky lied bloodied but conscious, Steve reached out and pulled him to his feet, holding him up as Tony looked on.

"That shield doesn't belong to you." Tony said and Steve turned his back. "You don't deserve it. My father made that shield!" he said and Steve stopped, raised his chin, then dropped the shield and walked away with Bucky's arm around his shoulder.

Around our heads

Then he thought about when he was at Wakanda getting put to the cyro.

At Wakanda, medical facility.

"You sure about this?" Steve asked.

"I can't trust my own mind. So, until they figure out how to get this stuff out of my head I think going back under is the best thing . . . for everybody." Bucky said and went back into cryo.

Then he thought about when Steve needed his help and what happened after.

At Wakanda, T'Challa and Okoye were walking together, accompanied by two Wakandan soldiers.

"You'll have the King's Guard, and the Dora Milaje have been alerted." Okoye said.

"And the border tribe?" T'Challa said.

"Those that are left."

"Send word to the Jabari as well. M'Baku likes a good fight."

"And what of this one?"

"This one may be tired of war. but the White Wolf has rested long enough." he said and the Wakandan soldiers present the White Wolf with a new adamantium arm.

"Where's the fight?" Bucky asked.

"On it's way."

On the Quinjet Sam was piloting Rhodey, Steve, Natasha, Wanda and Vision.

"Drop to 2600, heading 0-3-0. I hope you're right about this, Cap. Or we're gonna land a lot faster than you want to." Sam said as the Quinjet passed through a force field into Wakanda.

"When you said we were going to open Wakanda to the rest of the world…This is not what I imagined." Okoye said walking with T'Challa and a band of the King's Guard.

"And what did you imagine?" T'Challa asked

"The Olympics. Maybe even a Starbucks."

The occupants of the Quinjet descend the ramp.

"Should we bow?" Bruce asked Rhodey.

"Yeah, he's a king." Rhodey said

"Seems like I'm always thanking you for something." Steve said shaking hands with T'Challa.

Bruce bowed in front of him.

"What are you doing?" Rhodey asked.

"Uh, we don't do that here." T'Challa said and issued with a motion of his hand. "So how big of an assault can we expect?" he asked and the group started walking back the way it came to greet the guests.

"Uh, sir, I think you can expect quite a big assault." Bruce said.

"How we looking?" Steve asked.

"You will have my King's Guard, the Border Tribe, the Dora Milaje, and…" T'Challa started.

"A semi-stable, 100-year-old man." Bucky said walking toward Steve and they hugged.

"How you been, Buck?" Steve asked.

"Uh, not bad, for the end of the world."

Outside Sam and Bucky were standing looking up a the sky.

"Hey, Cap, we got a situation here." Sam said over comm.

The defense shield around Wakanda destroyed one of the vessels entering the atmosphere.

"God, I love this place." Bucky said.

"Yeah, don't start celebrating yet, guys. We got more incoming outside the dome." Sam said.

"It's too late. We need to destroy the stone now." Vision said appearing beside the window with the others.

"Vision, get your *rear* back on the table." Natasha said turning towards Vision.

"We will hold them off." T'Challa said.

"Wanda, as soon as the stone's out of his head…you blow it to hell." Steve said to Wanda.

"I will." Wanda said.

"Evacuate the city. Engage all defense procedures." T'Challa said. "And get this man a shield." he said pointing at Steve.

T'Challa, Steve and Natasha returned to the front line.

"Did they surrender?" Bucky asked.

"Not exactly." Steve said

T'Challa lead the Wakandans in the war cry "Yibambe!" telling them to hold fast as the Outriders bound toward the barrier.

"What the hell?" Bucky said.

"Looks like we pissed her off." Natasha said.

T'Challa commanded the soldiers to engage their shields.

"They're killing themselves." Okoye said watching as the Outriders bombard the dome only a few getting through.

"You seen the teeth on those things?" Sam said sending redwings into the fight as he flew

"Alright, back up, Sam. You're gonna get your wings singed." Rhodey said and flew over a section that had been breached and dropped a barrage of mines.

"Cap, if these things circle the perimeter and get in behind us…There's nothing between them and Vision."

"Them we better keep 'em in front of us." Steve said.

"How do we do that?" Okoye asked T'Challa.

"We open the barrier." T'Challa said putting his hand to his ear. "On my signal, open North-West Section Seventeen."

"Requesting confirmation, My King. You said open the barrier?" a Wakandan Officer said

"On my signal."

"This will be the end of Wakanda." M'Baku said to Okoye.

"Then it will be the noblest ending in history." Okoye said and the section of the barrier was opened.

"Wakanda Forever!" T'Challa said and crossed his hands over his chest as his Black Panther helmet covered his face, leading the army as they ran toward the barrier. T'Challa and Steve were at the front of the advancing army. "Now!" he said and the section in the barrier disappeared and the Outriders charge at them. "How much longer, Shuri?" he asked over the comm.

"We've barely begun, brother." Shuri said.

"You might want to pick up the pace."

"Ready?" Thor asked.

"Let's go." Steve said

"New haircut? I notice you've copied my beard. Oh, by the way, this is a friend of mine. A tree." Thor said.

"I am Groot." Groot said.

"I am Steve Rogers." Steve said.

"Thank you for standing with us, M'Baku." T'Challa said.

"Of course, brother." M'Baku said.

"How much longer, Shuri?"

"Hulk. Hulk, I know you like making your entrance at the last second, well, this is it, man. This is the last, last second. Hulk! Hulk! Hulk!" Bruce said trying to change into Hulk.

"NOOOO!" Hulk said.

"Oh, screw you, you big green asshole! I'll do it myself!"

Thanos had just got the Infinity Stones; suddenly Thor hurled Stormbreaker, sending it right into Thanos' chest.

"I told you. You'd die for that!" Thor said and took hold of the back of Thanos' head forcing Stormbreaker deeper into his chest, staring angrily into his eyes while Thanos cried out in pain.

"You should've… You…. You should've gone for the head!" Thanos said, raised his gauntlet and snapped his fingers.

"NO!"

Thanos was now briefly inside the Soul Stone, where he saw a young Gamora on the home world of the Zen-Whoberi.

"Daughter?" he said.

"Did you do it?" Gamora asked .

"Yes."

"What did it cost?"

"… Everything." he said solemnly

Now out of the Soul Stone, Thanos noticed the damages inflicted on the scorched Gauntlet.

"What did you do?" Thor asked."WHAT DID YOU DO?!" he yelled angrily.

Thanos mockingly smirked at him before he used the Space Stone and teleported away, leaving Stormbreaker left on the Wakandian field.

"Where'd he go? Thor… where'd he go?" Steve asked

"Steve?" Bucky said feeling his prosthetic arm turning into ash.

Steve looked behind to see the portal on his left side. Three figures step through; Okoye, Shuri, and Black Panther, fully restored and ready to fight. Steve and the revived Wakandans shared a look when Sam zoomed in from above in his Falcon armor. As he did, dozens more portals started opening all around the battlefield. Through one of these, Strange descended in joined by Drax, Mantis, Star Lord, and Peter. Everyone watched in confusion and awe as more and more heroes arrived from all corners of the universe, all backed up with forces of their own including Black Panther and his Wakandan army, Valkyrie and the Asgardians, Wong and the Masters of the Mystic Arts and several Ravager ships. Amongst the throngs of heroes we see Bucky, Groot, the Scarlet Witch, the Wasp, and Pepper in her own iron suit arrived. Nearly every hero had magically been transported to the battlefield to face Thanos' hordes.

"Is that everyone?" Strange asked.

"What, you wanted more?" Wong asked.

Giant-Man emerged from the rubble of the Avengers facility with Professor Hulk, War Machine and Rocket. The Avengers, Guardians, Wakandans, Asgardians and Ravagers took up battle positions standing across Thanos' forces.

"AVENGERS!" Steve said and summoned Mjolnir. "–assemble."

Thor made a battle cry, as does Black Panther and the heroes charge, the Avengers theme swelling with their stride. Thanos raised his sword towards them, commanding his army to charge as well. Then both sides collide. Drax and Korg, Pepper and Tony, all were battling against Thanos' army.

Steve and Thor were fighting and Steve took Stormbreaker but Thor flew to him and passed Mjolnir.

"No, no, give me that. You have the little one." he said.

Meanwhile Tony was fighting some of Thanos' army. But Cull Obsidian punched him to the ground, then Giant-Man stomped him flat and Peter ran to Tony.

"Hey! Holy cow! You will not believe what's been going on. Do you remember when we were in space? And I got all dusty? I must've passed out, Because I woke up, and you were gone. But Doctor Strange was there, right? He was like, "It's been five years. Come on, they need us." And then he started doing the yellow sparkly thing that he does all the time." Peter said.

"He did? Oh, God." Tony said.

"What are you doing?" Peter asked and Tony hugged him, making him shocked, but hugged Tony back. "Oh, this is nice."

Meanwhile Star-Lord was fighting a bunch of Sakaarans, killing all of them except one, making him fall over dead and he dropped on Qull. He got up and saw 2014 Gamora. Thinking its present Gamora, he was shocked.

"Gamora?" Quill said and slowly approached her. "I thought I lost you." he said and touched her hair, not knowing she isn't present Gamora.

Then she grabbed his hand firmly off her hair.

"Ow." he said.

Then she kicked him in the nuts, slightly hurting him.

"Don't– touch–" she said and kicked him again, but harder. "me!" she said and he fell from the pain, while she wiped her face.

"You missed the first time– Then you got them both the second time."

"This is the one? Seriously?" she asked Nebula.

"The choices were him, or a tree." Nebula said.

Quill was pointing to 2014 Gamora in confusion, then to Nebula in question, and then back to Gamora.

Later, Clint was running with the gauntlet.

"Cap, what do you want me to do with this damn thing?" he asked.

"Get those stones as far away as possible!" Steve said.

"No! We need to get them back where they came from." Bruce said.

"No way to get them back. Thanos destroyed the quantum tunnel." Tony said.

"Hold on!" Scott said and shrunk to normal size and pulled out a remote. "That wasn't our only time machine." he said and pressed the button, activating Luis's van's Horn and was heard from afar.

Hearing so, Steve went to higher ground.

"Anyone see an ugly, brown van up there?" he asked.

"Yes! But you're not gonna like where it's parked!" Valkyrie said.

"Scott, how long you need to get that thing working?" Tony asked.

"Maybe ten minutes." Scott said.

"Get it started. We'll get the stones to you." Steve said.

"We're on it, Cap." Hope said.

Then they shared a look and they shrunk. Scott grabbed her and they flew to the van. Strange trapped a group of Chitauri in his magic and sent them through portals as Tony joined him.

"Hey. You said one out of 14 million, we win, yeah? Tell me this is it." Tony said.

"If I tell you what happens, it won't happen." Strange said.

"You better be right."

Meanwhile Scott and Hope were entering a small hole in the van's window, getting to the drive seat, regrowing and trying to activate the Quantum Tunnel.

"It's a mess back here." Hope said.

"It's– it's dead." Scott said.

"What?"

"It's dead. I have to hotwire it."

"Where's Nebula?" Thanos asked.

"She's not responding." Corvus said.

"Sire!" Ebony said pointing and Thanos saw the gauntlet.

Clint rushed through Outriders, before finding himself surrounded and saved by Black Panther.

"Clint! Give it to me." T'Challa said and Clint gave him the Gauntlet and he ran towards the van while fighting Thanos' army.

Eventually he was stopped by the double edged sword, boomeranged by Thanos. When it got back to him, he charged T'Challa, but was stopped by Wanda, filled with anger for the loss of Vision.

"You took everything from me." Wanda said.

"I don't even know who you are." 2014 Thanos said.

"You will." she said and with her powers, she picked up some debris on the ground and tried to crush him with it.

Ebony May grabbed the Gauntlet with his telekinesis of bricks and did the same for T'Challa, trying to stop him from getting the glove.

"I got it!" Peter said and grabbed the Gauntlet with his webshooters and swa surrounded by Chitauri. "Activate Instant Kill!" he said and the Robotic Spider Legs came out of his back, stabbing the Chitauri.

Thanos tried to kill Wanda with his double-bladed sword, but Wanda pushed it away and used her powers to try and crush him.

"Rain fire!" 2014 Thanos said.

"But sire, our troops!" Corvus said.

"Just do it!"

Then the spaceship cannons appeared and started firing at the heroes. It flung Wanda away. Wong made a shield and held it up and the others did the same. Suddenly one of the cannons hit a dam and water started flooding into the battlefield. Pepper was the first to notice.

"Uh, is anyone else seeing this?" she asked.

Strange looked at the broken dam and used his magic to stop the water from flooding the battlefield.

Meanwhile, Peter was still battling the Chitauri.

"I got this. I got this! Okay, I don't got this. Help! Somebody, help!" Peter said.

"Hey, Queens, heads up." Steve said, threw Mjolnir, and Peter shot a web and glided along.

Then Pepper caught him.

"Hang on. I got you, kid." she said and dropped him on Valkyrie's Pegasus.

"Hey! Nice to meet you– OH, MY GOD!" Peter said and the cannons knocked him off the Pegasus, then turned to face something in the sky as the cannons start shooting at something.

"What the hell is this?" Sam asked.

"F.R.I.D.A.Y., what are they firing at?" Tony asked.

"Something just entered the upper atmosphere." F.R.I.D.A.Y. said.

Then a bright light of thundering energy came surging down as Carol flew through the ship, and it resulted in an explosion and the ship crash-landing in the lake.

"Oh, yeah!" Rocket said.

"Danvers, we need an assist here." Steve said.

Meanwhile Scott was finally activating the Quantum Tunnel.

Meanwhile Carol was landing near Peter, standing there holding the gauntlet with his body.

"Hi. I'm– Peter Parker." Peter said.

"Hey, Peter Parker. You got something for me?" Carol asked.

"I don't know how you're gonna get it through all that." he said, got up and handed her the gauntlet.

Then Wanda arrivedV with Valkyrie flying on her Pegasus as she arrived.

"Don't worry." Wanda said.

"She's got help." Okoye said and Pepper landed next to Okoye, followed by Mantis, Shuri, the Wasp, 2014 Gamora and Nebula.

Thanos' army charged while the women help Carol go through the Outriders, Sakaarans and Chitauri. 2014 Gamora took out a gorilla, while Okoye took out Corvus Glaive. Wanda and Valkyrie destroyed two leviathans. Carol then started flying towards the van with the Gauntlet, flying past enemies and going through enemy blockades that are in her way with ease. Thanos, seeing this, started running to her, but was stopped by Pepper, Shuri and The Wasp, who blast him backwards. Thanos, after seeing Carol fly past him, threw his double sword at the van, destroying it and the quantum realm tunnel, throwing her backwards and losing her grip on the Gauntlet, which fell to the ground. Strange steadied the water after the explosion. In the final brawl for the Stark Gauntlet, Tony moved one of Thanos' enemies aside and saw the Gauntlet. He ran to get it, but saw Thanos, who he tackled. Thanos smacked Tony away, knocking him out.

Then Thor arrived with Stormbreaker and 2013 Mjolnir in an attempt to pin Thanos' arm down, with assistance from Steve. However, Thanos overpowered them and knocked them both out. After picking up the Gauntlet, Carol arrived, punching away at Thanos while he held the Gauntlet. She kept punching him, but he grabbed her by the arm and flung her away. Then he put on the gauntlet, gamma radiation from the stones eating at him as he tried to snap, but Carol raised again, and stopped his fingers from snapping, opening up his hand similar to what Steve did. Thanos headbutted her, but it did nothing. Just as Carol was gaining the upper hand by rising up and forcing Thanos onto his knees, he pulled the Power Stone out of the Gauntlet and used it in his free hand to hit her away. Tony looked in question at Strange, who simply raised one finger, telling him that the one win over Thanos he foresaw was at risk and Tony nodded. Thanos put the Power Stone back into the Gauntlet, yelling from the gamma radiation coursing through him, until Tony made one last attack on him, pulling on the Gauntlet before Thanos punched him away.

"I am– inevitable." Thanos said and snapped his fingers, but nothing happened except a metallic "clink."

He saw the Infinity Stones were missing. Tony had the stones on his own gauntlet, the gamma radiation coursing through him, to Thanos' shock.

"And I– am– Iron Man." Tony said and snapped his fingers with a loud "CLANG" and a blinding flash of white.

Rocket fired at a Leviathan and before it devours him, it crumbles into ash. The Black Order started crumbling to ash. T'Challa and Quill looked around in surprise; Steve looked on in exhaustion, knowing that they have won. Thanos, in horror, looked around and saw his entire army disintegrate. He looked at Steve, who just stared at him. Thanos sat down and mourned before slowly being erased from existence himself.

Meanwhile the power of the gauntlet raw energy had left Tony's entire right side fatally injured. He stumbled for a bit before his body collapsed besides a pile of debris. Rhodey soon flew in and went up to him to see him fading away. He bowed his head, knowing the damage was done. Then Peter flew in and saw Tony collapsed on the ground.

"Mr. Stark?" Peter said and ran up to him with tears forming in his eyes. "Hey– Mr. Stark? Can you hear me? It's Peter. Hey. We won, Mr. Stark– We won, Mr. Stark. We won. You did it, sir. You did it." he said and knelt but Tony was unresponsive and Peter broke down and hugged him. "I'm sorry– Tony–"

Then he gently put Tony aside to grieve and Pepper sat in front of the fading Tony.

"Hey." she said.

Tony was barely able to move his head, but managed to look Pepper in the eyes.

"Hey, Pep." Tony said he said quietly.

Pepper put her hand on his Arc Reactor and he rest his hand on hers. She took a good look at his fatal injuries and knelt.

"F.R.I.D.A.Y.?" she said and Tony smiled with tears in his eyes.

"Life functions critical." F.R.I.D.A.Y. said and Tony smiled with tears in his eyes.

"Tony. Look at me." Pepper said and made sure he got a long look at his smiling face. "We're gonna be okay. You can rest now."

With that acknowledgement, Tony's arc reactor flickered off for good. Pepper couldn't contain her grief anymore and started crying on his shoulder. Tony Stark, Iron Man, Earth's Best Defender, died. All the heroes gather and knelt in honor of Tony.

Bruce, Steve, Sam and Bucky were at the funeral.

"Now, remember– You have to return the stones to the exact moment you got them. Or you're gonna open up a bunch of nasty alternative realities." Bruce said.

"Don't worry, Bruce. Clip all the branches." Steve said.

"You know, I tried. When I had the gauntlet, the stones, I really tried to bring her back." Bruce said and looked at Steve. "I miss her, man."

"Me, too."

"You know, if you want, I can come with you." Sam said.

"You're a good man, Sam. This one's on me, though." Steve said and went over to Bucky. "Don't do anything stupid 'till I get back."

"How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you." Bucky said and they hugged each other. "Gonna miss you, Buddy."

"It's gonna be okay, Buck." Steve said and went over to the Quantum portal and don the Quantum suit.

"How long is this gonna take?" Sam asked.

"For him? As long as he needs. For us? Five seconds." Bruce said and Steve picked up 2013 Mjolnir. "Ready, Cap? Alright. We'll meet you back here, okay?"

"You bet." Steve said.

"Going quantum. Three, two, one–" Bruce said and Steve disappeared into the Quantum portal. "And returning in, five, four, three, two, one–" he said but Steve didn't appear on the pad so he looked around the equipment.

"Where is he?" Sam asked.

"I don't know. He blew right by his time stamp. He should be here." Bruce said and Bucky turned around from the pad.

"Well, get him back."

"I'm trying."

"Get him the hell back!"

"Hey, I said, I'm trying!"

"Sam..." Bucky said and Sam walked toward him.

Sam, Bucky and Bruce saw old looking Steve sitting on a log. Sam and Bucky went near him.

"Go ahead." Bucky said with a smile forming and looked over to Sam.

He walked towards the old man and instantly recognized the now-elderly Steve Rogers.

"Cap?" Sam said.

"Hi, Sam." Steve said and looked over to him.

"So did something go wrong, or did something go right?"

"Well, after I put the stones back, I thought, maybe I'll try some of that life Tony was telling me to get."

"How'd that work out for you?"

"It was beautiful."

"I'm happy for you. Truly."

"Thank you."

"Only thing bumming me out is the fact I have to live in a world without Captain America."

"Oh, That reminds me." Steve said and brought out his shield. "Try it on." he said and Sam looked over to Bucky, who nodded and Sam held Steve's shield. "How does it feel?"

"Like it's someone else's."

"It isn't."

Sam tried to hold back tears.

"Thank you. I'll do my best." he said.

"That's why it's yours." Steve said and shook Sam's hand.

"You wanna tell me about her?" Sam asked seeing the ring.

"No. No, I don't think I will." Steve said smiling.

Then he sighed, gave up, got up for the day and went for a run.

He was tired and tired of having nightmares.

When he got home he took a shower and made breakfast.

While he ate he thought about Sam and saw when he yelled at him for giving up the shield.

Forget what we're told

"Shouldn't have given up the shield." Bucky said.

"Good to see you too, Buck." Sam said.

"This is wrong."

"Hey, hey, look, I'm working, all right? So all this outrage is gonna have to wait."

"You didn't know that was gonna happen?"

"No, of course I didn't know that was gonna happen. You think it didn't break my heart to see them march him out there and call him the new Captain America?"

"Steve didn't want this."

"Oh, my God. What do you want me to do? Call America and tell 'em I changed my mind? Huh?" Sam said and chuckled. "Yeah, right. It's a great reunion, buddy, be well."

"You had no right to give up the shield, Sam."

"Hey. This is what you're not gonna do. You're not gonna come here in your overextended life and tell me about my rights. It's over, Bucky. Besides, I have bigger things to deal with now."

"What could be bigger than this?"

"This guy. His connections with rebel organizations all over Eastern and Central Europe, and he's strong. Too strong."

"And?"

"Well, he's been connected to this online group called the Flag Smashers. Now, Redwing traced them to a building somewhere outside of Munich. So that's where I'm going.

"Well, I don't trust Redwing."

"Hold on a minute. You don't have to trust Redwing, but I'mma go see if he's right. 'Cause I have a feeling they might be a part of the Big Three."

"What "Big Three"?"

"The Big Three."

"What Big Three?"

"Androids, aliens, and wizards."

"That's not a thing."

"I'm coming with you."

Then an alarm blared.

"What happened to the Flag Smashers? When did the government make you Captain America?" Reporter 1 asked.

"Is it still Falcon?

"Sam, thank you so much, from all of us." Ayla said.

"Sincerely. You did your part in dealing with those terrorists, now we'll do ours." Senator said.

"Are you still going forward with resetting the borders?" Captain America asked.

"Our peacekeeping troops will begin relocating people soon. The terrorists only set us back a bit." Lacont said.

"You have to stop calling them terrorists."

"What else would we call them?" Senator asked.

"Your peacekeeping troops carrying weapons are forcing millions of people into settlements around the world, right? What do you think those people are gonna call you?"

"These labels, "terrorists," "refugee," "thug," they're often used to get around the question, why?"

"Those settlements that happened five years ago, do you think it is fair for governments to have to support them?" Lacont asked.

"Yes." Captain America said.

"And the people who reappeared only to find someone else living in their family home, they just end up homeless? Look, I get it. But you have no idea how complicated this situation is." Senator said.

"You know what? You're right. And that's a good thing. We finally have a common struggle now. Think about that. For once, all the people who've been begging, and I mean, literally begging for you to feel how hard any given day is… Now you know. How did it feel to be helpless? Now if you could remember what it was like to be helpless and face a force so powerful it could erase half the planet, you would know that you're about to have the exact same impact. This isn't about easy decisions, Senator."

"You don't understand." Senator said and Captain America scoffed.

"I'm a Black man carrying the stars and stripes. What don't I understand? Every time I pick this thing up, I know there are millions of people who are gonna hate me for it. Even now, here… I feel it. The stares, the judgment. And there's nothin' I can do to change it. Yet, I'm still here. No super serum, no blond hair, or blue eyes. The only power I have is that I believe we can do better. We can't demand that people step up if we don't meet them halfway. Look, you control the banks. Shit, you can move borders! You can knock down a forest with an email, you can feed a million people with a phone call. But the question is, who's in the room when you make those decisions? Hmm? Is it the people you're gonna impact? Or is it just more people like you? I mean, this girl died trying to stop you, and no one has stopped for one second to ask why. You've gotta do better, Senator. You've gotta step up. Because if you don't, the next Karli will. And you don't wanna see 2.0. People believed in her cause so much that they helped her defy the strongest governments in the world. Why do you think that is? Look, you people have just as much power as an insane god or a misguided teenager. The question you have to ask yourself is, "How are you going to use it?"

"Sorry, I was, uh, I was texting and so, all I heard was, um, "a Black guy in stars and stripes."" Bucky said and they chuckled. "Nice job, Cap."

"Thanks." Captain America said. "Sharon?"

"Yeah. Now that I remember everything it hurts knowing she's gone." Winter Soldier said and sighed. "That's why I don't ask anyone out. I can't risk losing someone I love."
