A/N So on October 8th, a writer on Tumblr named Impulsivefanwriter had the idea of a crossover of my Grass is Always Greener series with Kittydemon9000 awesome fanfic, Same People but Not Really. It was awesome, and I couldn't resist adding to it and including Kay Hau's My Dad is Bad but Still Family characters as well. It was fun to write, and with both Impulsivefanwriter and Kittydemon9000's permission, I'm posting my continuation to the fic. This is NOT Impulsivefanwriter's half of the story. If you want to read that, look them up on Tumblr. I highly recommend their work if you like Same People but Not Really.
Spike Kai, Buddy Kai, and the first Lord Garmadon are all my versions of these characters in this from The Grass is Always Greener AU.
Toyger Kai, Bengal Nya, Lala, and the second Lord Garmadon are Kay Hau's versions from My Dad is Bad but Still Family.
Every other Kai variant in this is from Kittydemon9000's highly creative mind, and I highly recommend reading her work.
Credit to Impulsivefanwriter for writing the first half, whose work I also recommend.
Please enjoy.
Now With Five
After explaining things to Lord Garmadon (and assuring the multitude of Kais that no, this Lord G was not currently evil, and their Lloyds would both be very sad if you flambéd him, yes really, the Lloyds were the best man and ring bearer at his and Koko's second wedding not too long ago, they like him. They! Would! Be! SAD!), Smith turned to Buddy and Spike. "So, welcome to the Kai-verse, or whatever one of the Jays called it last week. Glad that for once we don't have to give the whole 'the multiverse is out there' speech."
"Yeah, we've kinda been jumping between our two dimensions a lot since my Garmadon accidentally switched our Lloyds," said Spike.
"He WHAT?" asked Red, looking alarmed. "Why would he do that."
"From what I understand, it was an accident," said Buddy. "One of his attacks got Lil'Loyd (Spike's Lloyd) caught in a fire and he made the wish to save him."
"I wish my son lived in a world where we didn't have to fight each other," Spike quoted dryly. "Boy, did that wish backfire on him. In more ways than one."
Hearing that, Smith could only stare off into the void, and Red looked like he needed a hug. Buddy promptly gave him a Kai Hug™ for his troubles.
"So, I'll just add your names to the list of Kai variants we've met," said Smith, seeming to decide to compartmentalize that story for later. "Which we should really write down at some point."
"Yeah, before we actually start forgetting some of them," added Red. "I mean, how many more Kais can there be out there."
Buddy and Spike exchanged a look. "Well… we do know ONE more we hang out with," said Buddy slowly.
"Yeah, the only reason he's not here now is because SOMEONE is stingy with his bodyguard lesson admittance," added Spike with a pointed glare at Lord Garmadon (who was still hanging out nearby because he found watching the multiple Kais shoot him glares very entertaining, and was just waiting for one to snap and pick a fight with him).
Lord Garmadon gave Spike a long look as he slowly slurped from his mug. "Don't blame me for that," he said. "Blame Wu. He bet me, and I ain't losing that bet. Besides, you said that spiky-haired punk was getting his bodyguard lessons from his me. Got made Minion of the Year for it too."
"Bodyguard lessons?" asked Red in bewilderment, glancing between Garmadon and the two newest Kais. "You're taking bodyguard lessons from HIM?"
"Gotta protect the Lloyds," said both Spike and Buddy in unison.
"Mine gets kidnapped at the drop of a hat," said Spike.
"Mine's a monster magnet," added Buddy. "Which is how we got Meowthra, and Taffy the Leviathan, and all those dragons Meowthra keeps adopting."
(Drake suddenly looked very worried about how Meowthra was eyeing him.)
"And these lessons are specifically geared towards protecting both of them," Spike concluded.
Suddenly many of the Kais looked very interested in these lessons.
Seeing this, Lord Garmadon took his mug and raised two of his hands in surrender. "Okay, I'm out," he said backing away. "My class is full, no more admittance. You want lessons, go to Fire Ninja #3's world." He then hurried back into his volcano and slammed the door behind him.
Disappointed by that, the Kais slowly turned back to Buddy and Spike. "I assume Fire Ninja #3 is who you were talking about?" said Smith dryly.
"Yeah, he's never bothered to learn our names," said Spike with a roll of his eyes.
"Yeah," agreed Buddy, "while he calls that Kai Fire Ninja #3, we call him…"
Toyger Kai stared at the sight before him.
Whatever he'd been expecting when he got a call from his counterparts, this was not it.
All of the other Kais stared back at him, except for Smith, who was rubbing his temples like he had a headache. "So let me get this straight. Your backstory is basically a combination of both my AND Red's lives, AND you only met your Lloyd (nicknamed Lala for some unfathomable reason) recently, who was raised by Garmadon in the volcano in your world, and was completely alone and hated for close to SIXTEEN YEARS before he met you."
"Yeah," Toyger said sheepishly. "My sister and I adopted him on the spot. We totally would have done it sooner if we'd moved to the city sooner."
"To be fair," said Toyger's sister Bengal Nya, who had tagged along upon hearing what was happening. "Our parents did look out for him during their stint as Ninja before us, but… yeah, we were really his first friends."
Red looked like he would be having nightmares about that scenario, and Smith just pressed his palms together in front of his face and breathed deeply.
"So why are you both nicknamed after cats?" asked MK, hoping to change the subject.
Everyone turned to stare at him for that question.
MK shrugged. "What? My friend Sandy has a lot of cats. I recognize the breeds."
Bengal grinned wickedly, and Toyger paled.
"Well, since you asked," said Bengal, reaching into her pocket for her cell phone.
Toyger tackled her. "NO! PLEASE DON'T EMBARRASS ME IN FRONT OF THE OTHER KAIS!" he yelled.
The two siblings broke into a scuffle, which distracted Toyger long enough to let Spike and Buddy share the very photo Toyger was afraid of with the rest.
Red and Smith both stared down at Spike's phone as Buddy's was passed around to the other Kais.
In it were all of the ninja in Toyger and Bengal's world. Lala stood in the middle dressed as a stereotypical golf caddy with cat ears stitched into his hat, and all the rest of his friends were gathered around with their own cat-ear headbands on their heads with varying degrees of enthusiasm about them.
Someone made the mistake of showing it to Aki, and the evil clone proceeded to laugh himself sick.
"I don't even know what to make of this picture," said Red, making the siblings freeze mid-wrestle. "Why is Lloyd dressed as a caddy? What's with the cat ears?"
Toyger let out a moan of despair realizing they were seeing the picture. "Garmadon bet the Mayor he could beat her at golf for control of the city," he explained tiredly.
"And the cat ears?" asked Smith.
"We were weaponizing Lala's innate adorableness to change public opinion on him," said Bengal with a victorious smirk. "It worked."
"And the reason you're wearing them too is…?" asked Red, filing that information away for later for his Lloyd.
"SOLIDARITY!" Bengal roared.
Toyger could only groan.
There was a beat of silence, then one Kai asked, "So what was that about bodyguarding lessons?"
MDiBbSF Lord Garmadon stares as he walks into the body-guard lesson classroom and finds it filled with a metric ton of Kais.
He turns to Lala, "Did your smart Minion figure out cloning?"
Lala, who had not been informed of this development, could only stare. "I… don't know…"
Also, all Kais collectively agree that all of their Lloyds can never gather in one place or the universe would implode from their combined bad luck.
A/N While I intend to keep updating this spinoff fic on April Fools Day (even have next year's chapter planned out), I might be willing to update on other times of the year if more ideas like this come to mind. Just a reminder to not take this fic seriously nor is it cannon to the Grass is Always Greener AU. It's just for comedy and fun, as an April Fools Fic should be.
Credit to Kittydemon9000 for her characters, thanks for letting me post.
Credit to Impulsivefanwriter for the initial concept, thanks for letting me post.
Credit to Kay Hau for her characters, and thanks for encouraging me to post.
See you next April Fool's Day... probably.
