Chapter 1: Ringing
Ringing. That's all she could hear. Every muscle and bone burned as she tried to look around, but her vision was blurred and the sounds around her were muffled. She could see silhouettes but couldn't make out who was who, the shapes running too fast for her brain to wrap around.
The attack came out of the nowhere. One minute, everyone was enjoying a nice day out in the city, the next, everything was exploding and Sentinels were raining down ready to capture. She didn't even know if her friends were caught. A large blast had knocked everyone backwards, sending debris everywhere.
Her ears were still ringing. She just wanted a normal day. But for her, nothing will ever be normal, nor for her friends she call family.
One hour earlier…
Rogue was brushing her hair at her mirror, putting on her gloves over her ringed fingers, then looks herself over in her full body mirror. She wore a long sleeved green sweater, a black skirt with thigh high black socks and a pair of black thigh high flat boots. It was fall, but luckily it wasn't that cold out just yet. Still, the southerner enjoyed the changing seasons in New York, but missed it back home in Mississippi where it was hot almost all year round.
A knock alerted her and she went to her door, but before she opened it, Kitty phased through. "You, like, almost ready?" Kitty smiles.
"Yes. Ah just finished." Rogue rolled her eyes, but a tiny smile pulled at the corners of her mouth.
"Cool! Let's go find Kurt!" Kitty tugs on her best friends arm and phases them through her door and into the hall.
The two girls walk down the hall, finding Kurt at the bottom of the stairs fidgeting with his image inducer while a tall Cajun was telling him to stop messing with it. "It usually doesn't give me an issue. I have no idea vhy itz doing it now." Kurt makes a face.
"Maybe y' should have y' Professo' look at it befo' y' break it."
"Pfft, like zat vill happen."
"Kurt!" Kitty grins as she rushes down the stairs, catching the two boys attention.
Rogue fidgets with her gloves and the hem of her sleeves as she slowly makes her way down, looking at Kurt and Kitty as she knew a pair of red on black eyes were looking at her. She stops at the bottom next to Kitty, Kurt pausing his work on his image inducer. "Oh, hello, Kitty, Rogue." Kurt smiles.
"Ya know ya shouldn't mess with ya image inducer." Rogue glances to the device on his wrist, to which Kurt gives a sheepish grin.
"Told 'im. He keeps messin' wit' it, he might compromise himself on de trip." Remy smirks, arms crossed.
"I vill be fine. I'll just have ze Professor look at it after ze trip!" Kurt brushes it off.
The three sigh, then Scott enters the foyer with Jean and a couple others. "Hey, you guys ready?" Scott asks.
"Yup!" Kitty grins.
She grabs Kurt and starts rushing towards Scott and the others, Rogue heading over too, but pauses a bit when she heard Remy go up to her and whisper low in her ear. "Y' look belle, chére."
Rogue shakes her head. "C'mon, swamp rat, or ya gonna get left behind."
She quickly walks over to the group, Remy smirking as he joined her, his hands in his trench coat pocket. Rogue tries to avoid his gaze, having glanced at his outfit for the day-a dark blue tee with ripped jeans, brown leather boots, and his usual trench coat over the shirt.
Ever since he came and joined the X-men, Rogue felt like she wasn't herself. She was surprised he even came after they defeated Apocalypse. Just the other day, she tried to avoid him by turning around and walking out of the room she entered but she walked right into the wall next to the door. She's still
mentally kicking herself for embarrassing herself, though it would appear to amuse the Cajun. And he knows the affect he has on the resident Rogue by his presence at the mansion.
Rogue buckles up her seatbelt in the car Logan was driving, sitting next to the gruff man up front and gazing out the passenger window. Scott was driving his car with Jean, Alex, Bobby and Ray, while Kitty, Kurt, Remy and Piotr were in the car with Rogue and Logan. Storm was driving with Hank and Professor and few other students-Jubilee, Amara, Tabitha, Jamie, Sam, Roberto and Rahne.
They head into the city for a relaxing day of walking around, shopping and sightseeing, the groups walking around together and chatting. Rogue looks into a few shop windows, commenting to Kitty on some things and laughing. Tabitha puts her arms around the two, cracking a joke to the two and Amara who was besides her. Rogue smiles, Remy catching her genuine smile which made his heart flutter a bit as he doesn't see her genuine feelings too often.
The group of girls stop in front of a store window, peering in at the jewelry displays. "Wooow. That necklace is, like, soo pretty." Kitty gushes as she points to a baby blue heart necklace.
Rogue smiles. "Maybe ya should ask Lance ta give it ta ya."
Kitty smiles sadly. "Actually, I broke up with Lance five days ago. I didn't want to tell you guys but I'm fine!"
"WHAT?! Kitty, let me go beat his ass!
I just want to talk." Tabitha looks at the shorter girl incredulously.
"No, Tabitha, that's okay. Plus, Piotr helped me a couple times. He's like so sweet." Kitty shakes her head with a soft smile.
Rogue makes a face, but then looks down at the displays, her eyes catching a beautiful small, green, pendant necklace. She sighs as she leaves the window to catch up with the girls, not noticing the pair of red on black eyes catching what she was looking at.
They were half way into their trip, everyone was enjoying themselves and so far no issues had ensued. Logan, Storm, Hank and the Professor felt relieved as they watched the students young and old explore the city. "This is going great." Hank comments. "And here I was worried about anti-mutant things coming after us."
A loud boom was heard off in the distance, Logan growling while Hank pinches the bridge of his nose and mumbles under his breath. Scott grabbed Jean's hand instinctively, preparing for anything. "Vat vas zat?" Kurt asked on high alert.
"I don't know, but it can't sound good." Scott says. "Professor, should we start heading back to the cars?"
Scott looks back to the Professor, Charles opening his eyes after using his powers to detect what was happening. "Let's start to head back now. I fear if we stay any longer we might be caught up in something terrible."
Everyone starts to walk back the way they came, some of the younger students grumbling, Rogue looking over her shoulder to catch a glimpse of smoke rising off in the distance. "Man. We can't enjoy a full day in the city." Tabitha groans.
"Maybe some other time?" Amara tries to give her best friend a sympathetic smile, but Tabitha lets out a huff.
"I'm going to go walk with Piotr and talk to him. I'll catch up with you guys later." Kitty dismisses herself, waving to her three friends as she jogs to catch up with the Russian mutant.
"Hey, wait! Kitty!" Rogue calls out, but she was gone, which made her huff.
"What'd I miss?" Rogue jumps as Remy pops up beside her.
"Dammit, Swamp rat! Ya coulda given meh a heart attack!" Rogue growls, but Remy chuckles.
Tabitha and Amara look at each other, then Tabitha grins. "Well, we wouldn't want to interrupt anything so we'll go ahead!" She pushes Amara forward to give the two southerners some space, Rogue gaping as her friends had left her alone with the one person she would never want to be fully alone with.
"Hm. Dey seem in a hurry." Remy smirks.
Rogue fidgets with her gloves. "Well, ta answer yer question-"
Another boom, closer this time, alerted everyone around them, people starting to panic and run. Rogue gets bumped by some people, panicking even though she was fully covered as she wrapped her arms around herself. She gasps softly in surprise when she felt Remy tug her to him, his arms around her protectively. "That was what happened, except furthah away." Rogue says as she looked around and noticed the others staying together and looking around.
What they weren't expecting was a huge blast hitting the street they were on, knocking everyone back into the street, the ground, buildings or alleyways as a Sentinel lands, everyone screaming as they get knocked over hard. Logan was the first to regain consciousness as he gazes up and growls, his claws coming out. "Charles! We have to get out of here!" Logan yells, the Professor struggling to sit up.
"Everyone, we must split up. We cannot risk getting captured by the Sentinel!" The Professor commands.
Everyone was struggling to get up, some holding their arms or sides, some helping others up. Remy grunts as he starts to get up, gritting his teeth in pain. He gazes to his left to find the Sentinel walking towards their direction. He can hear Logan commanding everyone to run and split up, his red on black eyes scanning the area for a certain southerner. They land on a barely conscious Rogue who was struggling to figure out her surroundings, gritting his teeth as he half limped towards her.
Rogue squints as she looked around, her hands over her ears as the ringing continued. Her vision was starting to come back as she noticed her friends scrambling to run, the voices starting to become less muffled but she was still struggling to make out words. She jumps a bit, crying out in pain lightly as she felt someone grab her, but once her eyes landed on who it was, she relaxed as Remy was talking to her.
Rogue's brows furrow as she couldn't tell what he was really saying to her, the ground trembling underneath her as Remy kept trying to talk to her, a flicker of panic crossing over his face. She notices him glance over, his expression changing, then he picks her up, gritting his teeth as he does and starts to run as fast as he could.
Rogue blinks as she starts hearing screams coming more and more into focus, hearing the mechanical sound of the Sentinel as it walks through the city. "What…?" She says softly.
Remy glances down at her as he ran, noticing her hearing was back. "Y' okay? Y' couldn' hear anyt'in' I was sayin' t' y'."
"Ah think so…" Rogue blinks, looking around. "Wait. Remy, where are the othahs?"
"Logan said t' split up. De Professor don' want us captured. We gotta get out o' de city." Remy says, wincing a bit.
"Oh god… the Sentinels are back." Rogue groans.
The two head into a subway station, sighing in relief as they get on a train, their car empty. Rogue winces and hisses in pain as she sits, Remy grunting as he sits down next to her. Her leg was hurting her and so was her arm, part of her skirt ripped along with her sweater. She glanced to Remy who looked just as bad, both having scrapes on their faces-Remy with a cut on his cheek and forehead while Rogue had a small gash on her forehead, clothes tattered and some blood staining them. She grabs the end of her skirt and balls her fists, hoping Kitty and Kurt were safe and okay.
Remy looks at her, noticing the look on her face. He gives her a reassuring smile, a hand gently going over one of hers. "Dey'll be fine. 'M sure if we go back t' de mansion dey'll all be waitin' fo' us."
Rogue just nods silently. The train ride was a little long, Rogue feeling tired as her body ached in pain. She starts to nod off, but she didn't want to sleep as she wasn't sure if she had a concussion or not as she had felt blood on her forehead. Remy could tell she was tired, but he had to make sure she was going to make it back okay. "Easy dere, chère. We're almost t' de stop." Remy says softly.
Rogue just nods sleepily. The train stops at the station, the two southerners getting off and heading towards the direction of the Xavier mansion. It was a long walk, both helping each other get to their destination, feeling relief when they reached the mansion gates in a few hours. Rogue types in her code, the gate opening, then the two limp up the driveway and to the front doors. "Hello?" Remy calls out when they get inside.
They waited for an answer but there wasn't one, the two southerners looking at each other. "Maybe they're still on their way?" Rogue shrugs.
"They would've gotten heah befo' us if dey took dere cars." Remy runs a hand through his disheveled hair.
They walk around the mansion, still finding no one, then they look for a first aid kit, which was in one of the closest bathrooms to them. Rogue sits on the toilet lid, groaning in pain, while Remy opens it up to see what they had. He winces at how he looked in the mirror, cleaning his face wounds first, then he turns to Rogue. Rogue takes a cotton ball from the kit, applying some rubbing alcohol to her small gash, only to hiss in pain and stop. "Y' need help?" Remy offers.
"Ah'm fahne." Rogue shakes her head, then winces as she cleaned up the rest of her face.
The two exit the bathroom, Rogue heading towards her room, while Remy slowly walked around the mansion to do some searching. Rogue shuts her bedroom door and sighs as she slides down it. After sitting their for a couple minutes, she gets up and strips off her clothes, whimpering at the other gashes on her body as she cleans them up too and applies large patch bandaids, then she changes into a pair of sweatpants and a sweater, hearing a knock on her door as she finishes up.
Rogue opens her door to find Remy standing there, his clothes swapped out for new ones too. "No sign o' anyone heah. I don' t'ink dis is safe t' stay."
"What?" Rogue looks at him, brows furrowed. "Why don't we just wait fer the othahs ta come back."
"We don' know IF dey'll be comin' back and we don' know if we were followed." Remy's stance changes.
Rogue bites her lip, looking away. "So what? We just… pack and run?"
Remy just nods. "Until we at least find de ot'er's."
"Ah'll… hafta think about that…" Rogue says, looking away from him.
"Jus' pack a bag incase.." Remy looks at her, then he turns to go towards his room to pack a small bag.
Rogue closes her door, sighing, then she grabs her duffle bag and puts some clothes and toiletries in it. She didn't think she would have to do this, but if there was a chance they were followed, it was best to not waste time preparing. Rogue put her bag by her door, then she turns when she heard a rumble, her brows furrowed. "Huh?" She starts to walk towards her balcony window, cautiously, then she pauses to listen and look.
A boom and crash alerted her immediately, debris sending her flying to the side as she lets out a cry. Her door flung open, Remy standing there with wide eyes. He tosses his bag and her bag into the hall then rushes in to go get Rogue. He sees a Sentinel off in the distance, gritting his teeth as he helps Rogue up and escape her room. "Y' okay?" He asks.
"Ah! N-no." Rogue winces as they rush out.
Remy grabs their bags and they start to jog down the hall, ducking as another blast rocked the mansion. Rogue covers her head and lets out a small scream in surprise. "We need ta get ta the lowah level!" Rogue shouts over another blast.
Remy nods, maneuvering them around debris and towards the lower levels. The sentinel comes crashing through the front entrance of the mansion, the two halting briefly in fear as it spotted them and raised its gun. They duck into a hallway and begin running as fast as they could, taking an elevator to get down to the hanger and danger room. Rogue lets out a gasp as she heard metal scraping above them, Remy grabbing her once the door opened, then the elevator breaks and falls, the two southerners not wasting a second more.
Remy leads them into the hanger, wondering what they should do. Rogue opens the hanger and pauses at the cliffs edge, her eyes wide. She knew there was a path to get around that would take them to the wooded areas but she wasn't sure where. "What do we do now?!" She asks, her chest feeling tight.
"Dere's gotta be anot'er way out." Remy says.
"Only other way out is back where that sentinel is!"
They hear the the hanger door starting to break, then they explode off the hinges, crashing into the wall and part of the blackbird. The two southerners back up, realizing they were at the edge of the hanger cliff, Rogue nervously grabbing onto Remy's jacket as he stood there with a card ready. The sentinel spots them and shoots, missing them but getting the top of the ceiling-causing it to crumble down and the two fall off into the vast ocean below.
Rogue gasps and coughs for air as she resurfaces, wincing in pain as she tries to stay afloat. She looks up only to see the sentinel walking towards the cliff searching for them. Remy gasps as he pops up, noticing the sentinel, then he goes towards Rogue. "Get down, it might go away if it can't see us." Remy instructs, Rogue looking at him with wide eyes, but she nods and they both take a deep breath and go under.
The sentinel looks around, seeing nothing but debris, then it starts to leave. "No mutants detected. Head back to base." The robotic voice said as it headed back in the direction it came in.
The two southerners gasp for air as they come back up, helping each other get to shore. Rogue whimpers in pain as she lays on the soft sand, Remy groaning a bit as he heaves himself and their bags next to him. "Now what?" Rogue asks, pain in her voice.
"We can' stay heah," Remy pants. "We should probably find some place t' stay temporarily an' come up wit' a plan."
Rogue just nods, resting her head on the sand as she tries to catch her breathing. "Y' okay?" She hears him ask, but she just nods in reply as she wasn't going to worry about her injuries at the moment.
The two lay there for a moment, catching their breath before getting back up to start going. They walk stealthily to the garage which only had bits of debris, but the remaining vehicles were intact. Remy grabs his motorcycles keys off the wall and straps his bag down, Rogue hanging onto hers as she watched. "Lemme strap it down fo' y', chère. Gotta give y' body a rest." Remy offers, a small smile on his lips.
Rogue bites her already scratched up lip, handing her bag to him to which he straps it down, then he hands her a helmet and puts on his own. She gets on behind him, her hands resting on her leg, but as soon as Remy started his motorcycle he grins and looks back at her. "Y' might want t' hold on tight."
Rogue rolls her eyes, putting her arms around him loosely but once he started going, she tightened her grip around him, feeling him chuckle lightly. They drive out of Bayville and away from the city to avoid any more Sentinel encounters, stopping at a motel to rest as they were both exhausted.
Rogue puts her bag aside, then she lays down on her bed, letting out a sigh. Remy places his bag down, sitting on his bed, still wincing a bit. They were both still sore and injured from earlier but were relieved to be somewhere safe-for now. Rogue gets up and goes to the bathroom, checking on her injuries. She winces at several large bruises and gashes that were scattered on her body, slowly walking back to her bed after cleaning them up. Remy had looked at his and cleaned them up, hissing in pain as he lays down. "Do ya think the othahs are okay?" Rogue asks, her voice soft.
Remy looks up at her, seeing how she was curled up in her bed. "I hope so. From what I saw, I didn' see anyone get captured when we were runnin' away in de city. But who knows."
Rogue just nods silently, looking down with a small frown on her lips. "G'naght, Remy." She says, then she rolls over to face away from him.
"Night, chère." Remy says, softly, frowning a bit too as he laid on his back and stared at the ceiling.
The two were both in their thoughts until sleep over took them, Rogue feeling a couple tears slip out, but she wipes them away with one of her hands-letting sleep come over her exhausted body. They weren't sure what tomorrow was going to bring, but both southerners knew that they had each other.
