A/N: SORRRRRYYY
Life hit me like a truck, and between trips and work, I let this story drop from my mind. i am uploading both chapters I was supposed to. Chapter 7 for March 15 and Chapter 8 for the current upload schedule.
I hope you guys like this chapter and it marks the beginning of Pewter City Arc.
Reviews:
Game Lover: I already gave Ash a fire type with Blaze (houndour) and I think that its too early in his journey for him to have pokemon of the same type. It makes more sense for him to cover his bases with other typings. As for getting all the starters, I was heavily considering it while planning out his team. They are all so powerful and I think good complex stories could revolve around them ie. Charizard with Charific Valley and Squirtle joining the squirtle squad again. I wanted to challenge myself to introduce more pokemon.
Speed Reader: Same reasons as explained above. I wanted to expand upon the world. I think that I'm going to intentionally leave out a lot of stuff while taking a deep dive into things I really want covered. I really want to flesh out this world and leave small plot points and easter eggs I can always revisit later in the chapter.
AND ON WITH THE SHOW
The group finally made it to Pewter City after an hour and a half of running, soaked and exhausted. The rain had stopped an hour in, leaving the air feeling sticky and uncomfortable. As they entered the valley near Mt. Moon, the cool mountain air made their run slightly more bearable.
Five minutes from Pewter, they passed a trainer who seemed to be searching for something. The group paid little attention to him and continued on their way. After watching them for a moment, the trainer realized these were the people he was looking for and started running after them.
Upon arriving at the Pokémon Center, a relieved Nurse Joy greeted them. Skye, who had been waiting with her, flew over to Ash with a chirp of joy. Ash wasn't sure if Nurse Joy was more relieved to have the Charmander in good hands or to have Skye stop staring at her. They approached the desk, and Ritchie couldn't help but ask, "Did you receive my Charmander? Is it doing okay?"
Nurse Joy answered, "Thank you all for bringing Charmander to us. Sending it ahead with your Staravia was the right call." She then muttered under her breath, "She didn't need to stare at me the whole time, though." She continued, "We were able to treat it, and it's now in good condition. However, we found that Charmander was suffering from a respiratory illness. It could have been fatal if you hadn't brought it in when you did. You all saved its life."
Ash smiled with relief, "That's great news, Nurse Joy. We're just glad we could help."
Misty chimed in, "We should also find out who left Charmander out in the rain like that. It's important to hold people accountable for their actions."
Melanie voiced her concern, "It's heartbreaking to think that someone could just abandon a Pokémon like that. I hope they learn from this."
Ritchie nodded in agreement, "Me too. No Pokémon deserves to be treated that way."
Nurse Joy assured them, "I'll make sure to file a report with the police so they can investigate."
Ritchie sighed, "I'm just glad Charmander is okay. I didn't want a Pokémon death on my conscience."
Melanie patted him on the back, "You did a good thing, Ritchie. You all saved a life today."
Ritchie added, "Yeah, I just want to meet the Charmander and hug the little guy. I can't believe what state it was left in."
Misty scowled, "I know Nurse Joy is going to file a police report, but if I get my hands on the trainer who did that…I swear…" She trailed off into an angry rant about what she would do to that trainer, each idea more imaginative than the last.
Ash tried to calm her down, "Misty, let's just focus on making sure Charmander recovers fully. We can't change what happened, but we can make sure it has a better future."
Melanie looked at the others, "Do you think we should confront the trainer if we find them? Or just let the authorities handle it?"
Ritchie shook his head, "I don't know. I want to give them a piece of my mind, but I also don't want to make things worse for Charmander."
Ash weighed in, "Maybe we should focus on helping Charmander recover first. Once it's healthy, we can decide what to do about the trainer."
Misty agreed, "Yeah, you're right. The most important thing right now is Charmander's well-being."
The group exchanged glances as they waited for news on its recovery.
Melanie pulled Ash aside, her voice heavy with concern, "This is why I opened my sanctuary, Ash. You said trainers aren't all bad and you are a great example of a good trainer, but it's that poor Charmander's trainer who poisons the trainer name. So many of the Pokémon in the sanctuary share the same story. They've been abandoned or mistreated, and it's heartbreaking to see. I don't want to paint all trainers with the same brush, but it is hard not to right now."
Ash listened carefully, understanding her perspective but feeling frustrated as well. He responded, "Melanie, I get it. There are definitely trainers out there who don't treat their Pokémon with the respect and care they deserve. But that's your fear talking, and that is what leads to prejudice. You can't paint all trainers with the same brush just because of a couple of bad trainers. Look at Misty. She's getting so worked up about what she would do to that trainer, and she's a great example of someone who truly loves her Pokémon. If you can't paint all trainers as good when you see a good trainer, then you can't do it when you see a bad trainer."
Melanie nodded slowly, taking in Ash's words. "You're right, Ash. I know that there are good trainers out there, like you and Misty, who genuinely care for their Pokémon. It's just that situations like this make it difficult to remember that."
Ash gently patted her shoulder, offering comfort. "I understand, Melanie. It's natural to feel upset and angry when you see something like this happen. But it's important to recognize that there are people out there working hard to make the world better for Pokémon."
Melanie hesitated, then agreed, "I guess I see your point. It's just so hard to see the good sometimes, especially when we're faced with such heartache. But I know that bad thoughts poison the good ones. It's just the way the world works. Maybe we can all work together to create a more positive environment for Pokémon and trainers alike."
Ash smiled, encouraged by Melanie's words. "That's the spirit, Melanie. We'll continue to do our part to make sure every Pokémon is treated with love and respect."
Their conversation concluded. Ash and Melanie rejoined the group, feeling a renewed sense of purpose as they focused on Charmander's recovery and the challenges that lay ahead. Some time went by, and the group decided to get a room to rest and dry off. It was the middle of the day, so Ash made sure not to get on the bed after showering, knowing that he wouldn't get up otherwise. He went back downstairs and met Misty on his way down to the Pokémon Center.
They went down, and Ash handed Custos, Skye, Blaze, and Venus to Chansey, who was at the desk instead of Nurse Joy. Ritchie and Melanie came down soon, and together the three trainers and Melanie waited for Nurse Joy and more news on Charmander.
Finally, Nurse Joy approached them with a smile, "I have some good news. Charmander is doing much better, and it's ready to see you all now."
The group eagerly followed her to a private room where Charmander was resting. Ritchie could feel his heart racing in anticipation and worry. He had done everything in his power to save the little Pokémon, and now the moment of truth had arrived. Seeing Charmander looking healthier and more energetic brought a smile to all of their faces, but Ritchie was particularly relieved.
Ritchie knelt down next to Charmander and gently hugged it, whispering, "I'm so glad you're okay, buddy. We'll make sure you're never left out in the rain again." He felt a sense of gratitude that he could never have imagined before. It was as if he had gained a new family member.
Ritchie then looked into Charmander's eyes, sincerity clear in his voice. "Charmander, I need to tell you something. I had to capture you to save your life, but I want to know what you want to do now. Your trainer abandoned you to die, and since I was able to capture you, it seems they released you as well. I promise I will never abandon you, but the choice is yours."
Charmander stared into Ritchie's eyes, considering his words. After a moment, it nodded its head, agreeing to become Ritchie's Pokémon. The group let out a collective sigh of relief and joy. Ritchie's face lit up with excitement as he hugged Charmander tightly. "I'm so happy you're joining our team! I'm going to name you Zippo!" He couldn't contain his excitement at the thought of having a new partner on his journey.
Ash deadpanned, "Like the lighter?" His tone was mocking, but Ritchie was too happy to notice.
Ritchie, not catching Ash's tone, responded enthusiastically, "Exactly!" He was already plotting out strategies and imagining the battles they would win together.
Misty and Melanie couldn't help but laugh at the scene. The newly named Zippo spewed a weak flame at Ritchie in response to the name. Ritchie took it in stride, grinning widely. "See! He likes me!"
This caused the whole group to burst into laughter again, and this time, even Ash couldn't help but join in.
The four of them left the private room and walked towards the exit of the Pokémon Center, ready to continue their journey towards the next gym. As they walked, they couldn't help but notice a frantic trainer burst into the building. He was gasping for air and appeared to be in a state of panic. The trainer quickly spotted Ash and pointed at him, saying, "You! You're the one I was sent to find."
Ash looked confused, "Me? Why are you looking for me?"
The trainer caught his breath and explained, "Flint sent me to find you and Misty when you came out of the forest. He wants to invite both of you over for dinner at his place with his family."
Ash's curiosity was piqued, "Does this invitation include our other two friends?"
After a moment of thought, the trainer shrugged, "I don't think Flint would mind."
Ritchie, who had been silent until now, spoke up, "Why is Flint specifically looking for Ash and Misty?"
Ash hesitated before answering, "Well, Misty and I helped Flint out of a weird situation in the forest."
Ritchie seemed to have an epiphany and pointed accusingly at Ash, "You! You're the reason I had a tough time battling Flint. I would have fought his son if it weren't for you."
Ash, feeling a bit defensive, responded, "Hey, it wasn't just me. Misty was there too." Ritchie just pouted, still seeming a little miffed as Ash turned back to the trainer.
Ash rubbed his chin, "I'm not sure if we can go right now. I need to call my mom and Professor Oak. I promised Melanie that I would help her get in touch with him for her sanctuary and to publish her works."
Melanie chimed in, "No need to worry about that, Ash. It can wait until tomorrow. Go ahead and enjoy the dinner."
The trainer asked again, "So, are you ready to go now?"
Ash looked around at his friends and when he saw no objection, he nodded in agreement. They all then left the Pokémon Center and followed the trainer to a house right next to the Pewter Gym.
As they entered the house, Flint greeted them warmly with a wide smile. "Welcome, everyone! It's great to see you again, Ash and Misty. And it's nice to meet your friends, too."
He led them to the living room, where they all introduced themselves.
"So, you're Ash's and Misty's friends?" Flint asked, looking at Ritchie and Melanie. "How did you all meet?"
Ritchie grinned, "Well, I met Ash, Misty, and Melanie in the Viridian Forest. Me and Ash were going to battle when the rain poured us out. We saw an abandoned Charmander in the rain and sent it to the Pokemon Center. We all ended up running together to Pewter City."
Melanie chimed in, "I run a Pokémon sanctuary, and these guys just happened to stumble upon it. They were really kind and helped me out with a few things."
Ash and Misty nodded, with Ash adding, "Melanie's sanctuary is amazing. It's a safe haven for injured and abandoned Pokémon."
Flint looked impressed, "That sounds like a wonderful place. It's always good to see people caring for Pokémon in need."
As they continued to chat, the conversation shifted to their individual Pokémon and the various adventures they had experienced so far. They shared stories of their favorite battles, the unique quirks of their Pokémon, and the challenges they faced in the Viridian Forest. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with everyone enjoying the chance to get to know each other better. It was an excellent opportunity to relax after the tension-filled situation with Charmander.
Just as they were beginning to feel at home, Brock entered the room wearing an apron and announced, "Dinner is ready! Please, everyone, join me at the table."
They eagerly followed Brock to the dining table, where a lavish Japanese feast was laid out. There was an assortment of sushi rolls, steaming bowls of miso soup, crispy tempura, and tender slices of sashimi, among other delicious dishes.
As they all tasted the food, they couldn't help but compliment Brock on his exceptional culinary skills. "This is amazing, Brock!" said Ash between bites, "You're an incredible cook!"
The food was so good that they finished their meal in record time. Noticing their empty plates, Brock excused himself to bring out dessert. He returned with a delightful selection of Japanese treats, including mochi, dorayaki, and matcha ice cream.
With their bellies full and satisfied, the group settled in for a more in-depth conversation, eager to learn more about each other and share their stories. The conversation after dinner led to the Gym Battle.
Ritchie asked Flint, "Do you have any advice for me? I didn't have any Pokémon that were effective against Rock-types, so I'm not sure what to do."
Flint responded, "You should train strategies more. Since you don't have Pokémon that are effective against Rock-types, you need to find ways to work around that weakness."
Ash chimed in, "When can I have my gym battle, Flint?"
Flint replied, "You can have it in five days."
Ash's eyes widened, "Five days? Why do I have to wait that long?"
Flint explained, "When I was investigating the Bug Catcher Guild, I handed the Gym over to Brock. Many trainers saw that as Brock being weak and signed up to get the badge. Brock did a great job defending the badge, and when I came back, I made sure to get permission from the league to get rid of the backlog by going hard on all the trainers."
Flint's eyes flicked to Ritchie's, and unfortunately, Ritchie met his gaze. Immediately, Ritchie looked down, feeling ashamed for being one of the trainers who had tried to get an easy badge. Flint could see that Ritchie was an inexperienced trainer who still had a lot to learn about battling. So, he decided to take the opportunity to teach Ritchie something valuable.
"Look, Ritchie," Flint said with a reassuring tone, "you're not wrong to take advantage of an opportunity, but this was one where it benefits neither party. If you had gotten the badge by beating Brock, you wouldn't have been ready for your next badge. You need to train harder and become a better trainer if you want to succeed in the long run."
Ritchie listened attentively, feeling grateful for Flint's advice. He understood that he had made a mistake and that he needed to work harder to earn his badges.
"Come and battle me after Ash's battle. I'll make sure to keep it more fair," Flint said, offering a chance for Ritchie to redeem himself.
Ritchie felt excited at the prospect of battling Flint again. He knew that it would be a great opportunity to learn from a seasoned trainer and to improve his skills.
"It's going to be a great battle," Ritchie replied with enthusiasm.
Flint smiled, knowing that he had made the right decision. "I'm sure it will be," he said, feeling proud of his role as a mentor to young trainers like Ritchie.
Ash then turned to Brock, "I bet you had to battle back-to-back for so long."
Brock chuckled, "Oh, you have no idea. It was exhausting, but I endured it. However, I have to admit that I'm not really a big fan of battling. What I really love doing is caring for Pokémon. I'm actually hoping to become a breeder one day. Forrest, on the other hand, is the one who's into battling."
Misty, who had just finished her conversation with Melanie, chimed in, "Forrest? Who's that?"
Flint, who had been quietly listening to the conversation, replied, "Forrest is Brock's younger brother. Speaking of family, did you know that I have ten kids?"
Ritchie's eyes widened in surprise, "Ten kids? Wow, that's a lot!"
Melanie was intrigued, "Where are they now?"
Flint chuckled, "They're actually at the gym right now, having dinner. I decided to treat them to some takeout so they wouldn't have to cook. Trust me, it would have been a total mess if they were here with us."
Ash was fascinated by the idea of Flint having such a big family, "Wow, that's really impressive. How do you manage to take care of so many kids?"
Flint smiled, "It's not easy, but we make it work. Each of my kids has their own unique personality and interests, so it's never a dull moment. Speaking of family, Misty, how are your sisters doing? I remember you telling me about them the last time we met."
Misty's face suddenly darkened, "They're doing fine. Everything's great," she said curtly, cutting off Flint mid-sentence. Ash was taken aback by Misty's sudden change in tone and was about to apologize on her behalf, but Flint seemed to understand and changed the subject smoothly.
Ash was about to question what just happened when a loud knocking came from the front door. The conversation instantly died down as everybody stopped and looked to the doorway.
Flint got up and walked toward the door, and opened it. Everybody sitting at the dinner table craned their heads a bit to see who was at the door out of curiosity but the door blocked anybody from seeing who was at the door. Flint spoke in a hushed voice with the visitor and then finally closed the door. He then came back and sat at the table. He started eating and then looked up to see everyone staring at him with expecting looks. He chuckled, "Nosy little people, aren't you?" He then dismissed their question easily, "It was just some neighbor checking in with me asking how I was doing as I haven't been here for a while. Anyways let's finish up dinner, and then I wanna pull Ash aside for a little chat upstairs."
The group finished their dinner, feeling content and relaxed. As they stood up to move to the living room, Flint pulled Ash aside and led him upstairs for a private conversation. The others exchanged curious glances but didn't say anything, respecting their privacy.
Ash followed Flint up three flights of stairs. Each step echoed softly, the anticipation growing with every creak of the old wooden steps beneath them. Ash wondered where Flint was leading him. The air grew cooler as they ascended, and the sound of the bustling city below began to recede into a distant hum.
They reached the top of the stairs, and Flint opened a door to reveal a sprawling roof terrace. Ash stepped out and was immediately struck by the expansive view of Pewter City. The sight was breathtaking. The city sprawled out beneath them, a picturesque blend of history and progress. To the east, the renowned Pewter Museum of Science stood in all its glory, a beacon of knowledge that attracted trainers and researchers from all regions. The setting sun threw its magnificent form into sharp relief, creating an imposing silhouette against the darkening sky.
To the south, the sturdy exterior of the Pewter City Pokémon Gym stood proudly. The building was close enough for Ash to see the marks of numerous battles, a testament to the countless trainers who had come seeking victory. A little farther away, the bright lights of the Pokémon Center and the Poké Mart shone, serving as guiding stars for weary trainers.
Dominating the horizon was the mysterious Mt. Moon, its peak disappearing into the gathering clouds. Even from this distance, it was an imposing sight, the craggy slopes and deep caves promising adventure and danger in equal measure.
Ash was pulled from his awe-struck stupor by a strong gust of wind and the unmistakable sound of heavy wings flapping. Turning, he saw a massive Dragonite descending from the skies. Ash's heart pounded in his chest as he watched the Dragon-type Pokémon land gracefully on the terrace. Upon its back was a large man, his mane of red hair flowing freely in the wind. The man jumped off Dragonite with an athletic ease, his eyes sparkling with good humor. As he turned to face Ash, recognition hit the young trainer.
"Lance!" Ash blurted out, his voice echoing in the quiet night.
The Pokémon League Champion greeted him with a boisterous laugh, "Well hello, Ash! It's been a while since we met!" Ash, unable to find words, could only wave back. His mind was racing, trying to understand why he had been led to this impromptu meeting with one of the strongest trainers in the Pokémon world.
Once the shock had worn off, Ash found himself engaging in a surprisingly normal conversation with Lance. The Pokémon League Champion was far more laid-back than Ash expected him to be.
"I've heard about the new additions to your team, Ash. Skye, Blaze, Venus...you've got quite a line-up there!" Lance said, his voice filled with admiration.
Ash blinked, surprised that Lance knew about his Pokémon. He stuttered, "Y-you know about my team?"
Lance laughed heartily at Ash's reaction. "Of course! You're my sponsored trainer, Ash. It's the league's responsibility to keep track of your progress. Plus, I like to keep an eye on promising young trainers."
The conversation then smoothly transitioned to Ash's recent gym battles. Lance looked at Ash with a deep appreciation in his eyes. "And you've even managed to secure a gym badge from Giovanni himself. That's no small feat. You must've impressed him quite a bit, Ash."
Upon hearing this, Flint looked at Ash in surprise. "Giovanni? The Viridian City Gym Leader? You already have a badge from him?" he asked, bewildered.
Ash nodded, "Yeah, it was a tough battle, but I managed to get the badge." He then gave Flint a brief summary of his training with Giovanni and the subsequent 3v1 battle for the badge.
Flint listened attentively, his eyes wide with surprise and respect. It was clear to everyone present that Ash was not just another trainer. He was someone who had already begun to make a mark in the world of Pokémon, and his journey was just getting started.
Lance, sensing a shift in the atmosphere, carefully pulled out a crisp envelope from his pocket. The moonlight danced on its surface, casting a silvery glow that sparked curiosity in Ash's eyes. "Here," Lance said, handing over the envelope to Ash.
Ash received it, his brows furrowing in confusion. His eyes darted from the envelope to Lance, silently pleading for an explanation. Lance merely shrugged and gestured towards the envelope with a playful smirk, clearly indicating Ash to open it.
The young trainer did as instructed and unfolded the letter inside. His eyes scanned over the beautifully embossed Pokémon League's insignia at the top before his gaze dropped to the text. The letter read:
Dear Ash, We, the members of the Pokémon League, want to express our sincere gratitude for the selfless and heroic actions you have undertaken. Your successful efforts to dismantle the malicious scheme of Team Rocket against the Bug Catcher Guild and your fearless rescue of a Gym Trainer from their clutches truly exemplify the true spirit of a Pokémon trainer. Your bravery, compassion, and determination in the face of adversity have not gone unnoticed. We are proud to have someone like you among our ranks, and we believe that your actions will inspire the next generation of trainers to follow in your footsteps and make a difference in the world. As a gesture of our appreciation and acknowledgment, we have credited an amount of 30,000 Pokédollars to your account. We hope that this will help you further your journey and continue to be a shining example of what it means to be a true Pokémon trainer. Once again, thank you for all that you have done. We look forward to seeing what you will achieve in the future. Yours sincerely, Pokémon League
The letter slipped from Ash's hands as if his fingers had momentarily forgotten their function. His eyes darted up to meet Lance's, his mind a whirlwind of shock and confusion. "Wha-...why...?" Ash stammered out.
Lance met Ash's surprise with a calm, collected demeanor. He cleared his throat, preparing to lay bare the gravity of Ash's actions. "Ash, the League, and I are sworn protectors of not just the people but every single Pokémon out there. Your actions, whether intentional or instinctual, have saved not just one but countless lives."
He paused, allowing the weight of his words to sink in. "By apprehending two agents of Team Rocket, you've done more than just stall their operations. You've provided us with potential leads, valuable information that might just help us dismantle their infrastructure."
Flint, who had been silently observing their conversation, lowered his gaze, a shadow of guilt passing over his features. Lance quickly turned to him, his tone softening, "Flint, it's not your fault. We couldn't have predicted the magnitude of their operation. We sent you in for a preliminary investigation; it was us who underestimated them. We won't make that mistake again."
As he finished addressing Flint, Lance once again turned his focus back to Ash. "This money, Ash, is but a fraction of what you truly deserve. You've shown exceptional bravery and resourcefulness that is rarely seen in seasoned trainers, let alone beginners."
His gaze hardened a bit, a hint of frustration creeping into his tone. "However, there are complexities involved that extend beyond your individual feats. The politics within the League and its perception by the public require us to maintain a level playing field for all trainers."
A sigh escaped Lance's lips as he continued, "You're a League-sponsored trainer, Ash. If we were to grant you an excessive reward, it might be construed as giving you an undue advantage. The optics of it could stir controversy and breed resentment among other trainers. It's an unfortunate, delicate balance that we must maintain."
Lance's expression softened, his eyes meeting Ash's with a sincere look. "I hope you understand, Ash. Despite these limitations, I want you to know that your actions have been recognized and appreciated in the highest circles of the League."
Ash, his throat tightening with emotion, could only muster a simple, heartfelt, "Thank you."
Lance nodded, appreciating Ash's humility. However, the Champion knew he had to caution Ash, "You need to be careful, Ash. Thwarting Team Rocket twice makes you a target. They will come for you, and you must be ready. Continue to grow stronger."
With those words of warning hanging in the air, Lance gave Ash a firm nod before turning to his trusty Dragonite, who had been quietly observing the entire exchange. Lance climbed onto his partner's back, the giant Pokémon flexing its wings in anticipation. With a final wave to Ash and Flint, Dragonite took off into the night sky, disappearing in the blink of an eye.
Flint clapped his hand on Ash's shoulder, chuckling lightly, "Well, that was certainly exciting and fun, don't you think?"
Ash shot him a sideways glance, his voice laced with sarcasm as he retorted, "Oh, you think?"
Flint only laughed at Ash's dry humor as they started their descent down the multiple flights of stairs leading back to the living room. Their footsteps echoed around them, filling the silent house with the soft rhythm of their synchronized pace.
As they reentered the living room, the animated chatter that filled the room came to an abrupt halt. All heads turned their way, their eyes fixating on Flint and Ash with an awkward, expectant stare.
Ash's eyes locked with Misty's, her cerulean gaze filled with curiosity and a hint of impatience. Ash blinked. Misty blinked back. The brief blinking exchange continued for a moment longer, creating a silent, almost comical interaction.
Eventually, Misty threw her hands up in the air in exasperation, "Well if you guys aren't going to spill anything, can we just move on? We were discussing in detail about Brock's battles during his brief tenure as Gym Leader."
Misty's words caught Ash's attention, the curiosity in his gaze now replaced with intrigue. "Brock's battles?" he echoed, finding himself drawn into the conversation as he maneuvered himself into an empty seat.
An animated discussion took place where stories, battles, and strategies were shared. Brock shared his first challenge as a Gym Leader, his pressure, fear, and thrill of victory. Ash listened attentively, understanding that each trainer brought their unique approach to the field.
As the night grew late, the flicker of an idea sparked in Ash's mind. He turned to Brock, determination etched onto his face. "Hey, Brock, would you mind having a practice match with me in a couple of days?" he asked. "I think I could learn a lot from battling you, and it could help me prepare for my Gym battle."
Brock considered Ash's proposal, a slow smile spreading across his face. "I'd be honored, Ash," he replied. "A good battle is just what we need to shake things up. Plus, it'll be a great opportunity to test our skills."
The conversation wrapped up after that, and the Stone family bid Ash, Melanie, Ritchie, and Misty farewell as they headed back to their rooms at the Pokemon Center. They ended up crashing as soon as they arrived, the exhaustion from the whole day finally reaching them.
Bathed in the soft glow of the morning sun, Pewter City was coming alive. The bustle of the Pokémon Center was an embodiment of this early activity, with nurses bustling about, trainers getting ready for another day of battles and training, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingling with the scent of sizzling bacon and sweet pancakes.
At the breakfast table, Ash and Melanie sat together, plates filled with a variety of the Pokémon Center's specialties. The rich aroma of fresh pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sizzling bacon filled the air, blending with the undercurrent of brewing coffee. It was a peaceful moment, but Ash couldn't shake off the sense that something was amiss. Across the table, Melanie's usual sparkle seemed somewhat dimmed, her fingers fidgeting with the fork, eyes constantly shifting in unease.
"Melanie," Ash began, his tone laced with concern, "Are you okay? You seem... uneasy."
Melanie hesitated before setting her fork down and meeting his gaze. "I am... I'm just a bit nervous," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper, a faint blush dusting her cheeks.
"Nervous? But why?" Ash asked, genuinely puzzled. The Melanie he knew was usually so calm and composed.
Her eyes dropped down to her plate, an almost embarrassed grimace on her face. "I have to present my research proposal to Professor Oak today. It's... it's a pretty big deal."
Ash blinked, not fully understanding. "Professor Oak is really cool, you know. You don't have to be so nervous."
Melanie smiled softly at his naivety. "Ash, for you, Professor Oak is your friendly neighbor. But to the rest of us, he's a revered figure, the leading authority on Pokémon in the Kanto region. My research, it's about improving Pokémon healing techniques. If my proposal isn't approved, it could potentially stall advancements in Pokémon care."
The gravity of Melanie's predicament dawned upon Ash. For the first time, he truly understood the implications of Melanie's work. He let out a thoughtful hum, his eyebrows knitting together. "I see why you're nervous, but Melanie, you care about Pokémon, just like Professor Oak. He'll see that. He'll see the hard work, the passion you've put into this research."
His words seemed to soothe Melanie's frayed nerves. She exhaled, a tentative smile forming on her lips. "You're right, Ash. I can't let my anxiety overshadow the importance of my work. This is for the Pokémon."
"That's the spirit!" Ash grinned, relieved to see some of the tension leaving Melanie's face.
With the breakfast conversation drawing to a close, they cleared their plates and moved toward the video call booths. The early morning hum of the Pokémon Center receded as Ash and Melanie stepped into the semi-private hush of the video call booths.
Ash sank into the chair, familiar anticipation bubbling up as he punched in the digits he knew by heart. Moments later, the screen flickered to life, revealing the kindly, bespectacled face of Professor Oak.
"Ash, good morning!" The professor's voice filled the booth, steady and warm. His sharp eyes, crinkled at the corners from years of deep study and laughter, moved past Ash, landing on Melanie who hovered nervously in the background.
"Morning, Professor Oak!" Ash echoed with his characteristic energy. He stole a glance at Melanie, her anxiety palpable, before he began his introduction. "This here is Melanie, Professor. She's a dedicated Pokémon researcher from Viridian Forest. She's got something pretty special to share. I think you'll find it interesting."
Professor Oak's eyebrows arched, a mixture of surprise and curiosity washing over his face. "Oh? Well, it is always nice to meet another enthusiast of Pokémon research. However, I do have a busy schedule today, Ash. Are you sure it's something that would require immediate attention?"
Ash, anticipating the potential hesitance, was quick to reassure. "Yes, Professor, I'm certain," he urged, conviction ringing clear in his voice. "Melanie's been documenting some new information on berries to heal Pokémon more effectively. It's really impressive. I believe it's something that could make a difference for Pokémon everywhere, and she wants to present her work to you. I hope you can spare some time for her."
A pause hung in the air as Professor Oak considered Ash's words. His expression softened after a few moments, a slow nod acknowledging Ash's insistence. "Very well, Ash. If you believe it's important, then I trust your judgment. I look forward to hearing more about Melanie's work."
Relief washed over Ash and he shot Melanie a supportive smile, which she returned, her nervousness slightly diminished.
Professor Oak's face then spoke to Melanie, "Melanie, a pleasure to meet you! Your research sounds fascinating. I am always eager to hear about advancements in Pokémon care."
Ash got up from the chair, allowing Melanie to take his place. Professor Oak turned his attention back to Ash before he could leave the booth. "Ash, why don't you give your mother a call while Melanie and I talk about her proposal?"
Ash nodded, grateful for the suggestion. "That's a great idea, Professor. I'll let Melanie fill you in. Catch you later!"
With that, Ash moved out of the booth and Melanie settled into the chair, her nerves finally starting to ease. Meanwhile, Ash made his way to the adjacent booth, preparing to connect with another cherished figure back home - his mom.
"Good morning, Ash! How's your Pokémon journey going?" Delia Ketchum's warm face greeted her son as he appeared on the screen.
Ash's eyes lit up, "It's been incredible, Mom! Since we last spoke, I've caught another pokemon. Venus, my new Bulbasaur. She's a bit shy, but I can already tell that she's going to be a great addition to my team. Blaze has already incorporated well into the team and he was really useful as we travelled through Viridian forest"
Delia's eyes shone with pride, "That's amazing, Ash! You're building such a diverse and strong team. I can't wait to see what you'll accomplish with them."
Ash's excitement was palpable, "But wait, there's more! I've also been collecting Squirtle for Professor Oak's starter program. It's going to be so cool to see them all together!"
Delia clapped her hands together, "That's wonderful news, Ash! I can't wait to help out with the Squirtles at the lab. They're such sweet little things!"
Ash's face took on a more bashful expression, "And, uh, I met this girl who wanted to travel with me through Viridian forest. Misty's scared of bug pokemon, so she needed a partner..."
Delia's eyes sparkled mischievously, "Misty, huh? Tell me more about your adventures together. Is she cute?"
Ash's face turned beet red, "Mom!" He quickly changed the subject, "Anyway, I got my first gym badge from Giovanni. It was really tough, but I managed to pull through in the end."
Delia's smile faltered at the mention of Giovanni's name. She cleared her throat and quickly said, "That's great news, Ash! But don't forget to take a break and explore Pewter City too. The Fossil Museum is a must-see."
Ash nodded, "Thanks, Mom. I'll definitely do that. But I need to focus for now. I have a battle against Flint coming up in a few days, and I want to be prepared."
Delia's enthusiasm returned, "That sounds like an excellent plan, Ash. Just remember to take care of yourself too. You can't battle at your best if you're not feeling your best."
His conversation with his mom came to an end when Melanie came up to him, "Ash," she said, "Professor Oak wants to talk to you again."
Ash smiled, "Thanks, Mom. I'll make sure to take care of myself. Oh, and speaking of Professor Oak, I have to go now. He wants to talk to me again."
Delia smiled, "All right, Ash. Good luck with your training, and don't forget to call me again soon!"
"Will do, Mom!" Ash waved goodbye and headed back to the booth where Professor Oak was waiting for him.
The booth's chair was still warm as Ash took a seat again. He greeted Professor Oak, who looked back at him with a slightly more serious expression.
"Ash, there are several things I wish to discuss with you," Professor Oak began, his tone more grave than their earlier interaction. "Firstly, I want to commend you for your initiative in introducing Melanie to me. Her research is quite promising, and it could be beneficial for Pokémon everywhere. However, while your heart was in the right place, you should give me a heads up before introducing someone with a scientific proposal. There are protocols and procedures for this, and you're like family to me, Ash. This close connection might make you a target for those seeking my attention for their personal gain."
Ash began to interject, but Oak raised a hand to silence him. "Don't misunderstand me, Ash. I'm not blaming you. I just want you to be careful. After all, you never know who might be lurking in the shadows."
A hint of vulnerability washed over Ash's face. He hadn't considered this. "You're right, Professor Oak," he admitted, nodding thoughtfully. "I'll be more cautious about that. Thanks for your concern."
Oak nodded in approval. "Good. Now, onto another matter." The professor's gaze held a mixture of concern and caution. "I've read the full report Flint submitted. Ash, you need to understand how lucky you were with the Team Rocket situation."
Oak went on, "Both Butch and Cassidy are not just grunts; they are high-ranking members. If you hadn't intervened in the way you did, things could have ended differently. And after two direct encounters, you're likely on Team Rocket's radar. They're not an organization to be taken lightly. Please, be careful."
Ash felt his heart sink at Oak's words. "I know, Professor," Ash said quietly. "Lance told me the same thing yesterday. I'm doing my best to stay out of trouble."
"Wait, Lance?" Oak looked genuinely surprised. "You're becoming quite popular with the League's high-ranking members, aren't you?" he teased. Ash gave a sheepish grin, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly.
Before the professor could delve into it further, Ash quickly changed the topic. "Speaking of popularity, I've got a gift for you, Professor," he announced. He proceeded to explain his encounter with the rogue group of Squirtles. "I managed to catch four Squirtles who need a caring place to stay."
Professor Oak's eyes lit up, his earlier seriousness forgotten. "That's great, Ash! Squirtles can be quite a handful, but they'll be a great addition to the lab! I can't thank you enough."
The conversation wound down soon after, but Ash was left with a lot to think about as he exited the booth. As he walked away, his mind raced with thoughts of the future and the challenges that lay ahead. He knew that he had to be more vigilant and proactive in his approach to dealing with the various threats that he was likely to face. At the same time, he felt a sense of pride and satisfaction at the thought that he was making a difference in the lives of Pokémon and trainers alike.
Ash went to go prepare for the battle against the Slate family outside of Pewter City. He sat cross-legged on the grassy plains, his gaze fixed on his Pokémon as they played in the distance. Their unique strengths and personalities were evident in their interactions. As he watched them, an idea began to form. He remembered a childhood game, Tag. Simple in its essence, but requiring agility and strategy. Could he adapt this game for his Pokémon?
He imagined the game, naming it "It." One Pokémon would be "It," trying to tag another with a move. The others would dodge, defend, or even create barriers, and any Pokémon hit would then take up the mantle of being "It."
The benefits of such a game seemed numerous. It would naturally promote teamwork and bonding. As each Pokémon tried to dodge being tagged, they would need to lean on each other's strengths, weaving a tapestry of unity and trust. This dance of evasion and attack would also sharpen their strategic thinking and adaptability. With each new "It," the dynamics would shift, demanding fresh strategies and rapid adaptation.
Moreover, the repetitive use of their moves in the game would refine their precision and control. It would be like drilling a martial art, where repetition leads to mastery. The continuous dodging and maneuvering would also serve as a stamina-building exercise, ensuring they remain formidable even in long, drawn-out battles.
And then there was the matter of instinct. Being ever-vigilant, predicting opponents' moves, reacting swiftly — all these would be honed, enhancing their battle instincts and situational awareness.
A vivid picture formed in Ash's mind: Venus deploying her vines to create barriers, Skye utilizing aerial maneuvers, Custos using his heightened senses for prediction, and Blaze trying to outmaneuver opponents with fiery tactics.
Excited by the concept, Ash felt a burst of eagerness. He needed to introduce "It" to his Pokémon immediately, not just for training but for the sheer joy he imagined it would bring. Rising to his feet, he beckoned his team, the spark in his eyes evident. Once he told them of the game, they all seemed excited for the game. They all excitedly moved to the center of the clearing where Ash chose Venus to be "it" first:
In the heart of a verdant clearing, Venus stood, her energy palpable. The sunbeams streamed through the canopy, casting ethereal patterns on the ground, and turning her bulb into a glowing emerald. As the chosen "it", she was both a hunter and an artist of the field.
She began with a deep breath, her bulb quivering in anticipation. Venus's first strategy was a direct attack. A barrage of Razor Leaf projectiles hurtled through the air, their every spin reflecting sunlight. Custos, with the agility innate to Riolus, utilized Quick Attack. Like a blue streak, he darted left and right, narrowly missing the edges of the leaves. His rapid movements created a gentle gust, agitating the calm ambiance of their training.
Blaze and Skye, keenly observing Venus's strategy, decided on a dual defensive-offensive approach. Blaze exhaled a dense Smog. The noxious fumes, gray and thick, started enveloping the field, obscuring vision. Sensing this, Skye, flapping her wings, directed a Gust. This clever play turned Blaze's smog into moving walls of obscurity, creating moving patterns that would be hard for Venus to predict. However, Venus, with her connection to nature, sensed the rhythm in the chaos. Drawing from the ground's energy, she unleashed a Bullet Seed. Most of them hit stray targets, trees, rocks, and even the ground. But one, one perfect seed, ricocheted off a boulder, tagging Custos. The Riolu, surprised, took the mantle of being "it".
With the sunlight playing on his sapphire-blue fur, Custos looked majestic. The glow highlighted the determination in his eyes, clear proof that the game had truly begun. Rather than relying on direct offense, Custos decided to blend trickery with his martial prowess.
With paws aglow, he channeled an Aura Sphere, its pulsing blue energy illuminating the surrounding area. Venus, Skye, and Blaze watched warily, expecting a direct assault. However, this was Custos's feint. Instead of releasing the sphere, he dashed with a swift Quick Attack, aiming not for the farthest, but the closest - Venus. The Bulbasaur, quick on her feet and ever adaptive, responded in kind. Using her Vine Whip, she anchored herself to a sturdy tree branch, propelling herself above Custos's charge.
Skye, meanwhile, took the aerial vantage. With keen eyes, she observed the play, ready to swoop in and assist when needed. As Venus swung in the air, Skye used her wings to generate a wind current using Gust. This wasn't just to aid Venus but to unsettle Custos's trajectory. But Custos, embodying the martial spirit of his lineage, adapted. Mid-dash, he pivoted, sending forth a gleaming Bullet Punch. It was swift, almost a blur. And while Venus landed safely, the metallic fist found its mark on Blaze, transferring the title of "it".
Blaze, As the chosen "it", the flames around his body seemed more alive, dancing with an eager ferocity. The ground beneath him bore the subtle marks of scorching as he readied himself for his turn in their intricate ballet.
Harnessing the raw energy within, Blaze conjured a roaring Fire Spin. The fiery vortex became a protective barrier, its heat creating shimmering airwaves around him. The challenge was clear - approach at your own risk. Venus, recalling her previous strategy, decided on subterfuge. With a soft grunt, she released Leech Seeds that stealthily made their way around Blaze, intent on restricting his movement. However, Blaze, with senses heightened, detected the subtle shifts in the ground.
Skye, in her aerial domain, considered her options. A direct assault might be too risky, given Blaze's fiery defense. However, using the environment to her advantage, she cast a shadow over Blaze, momentarily darkening his field of view. Seizing this moment, she dived, wings slicing the air, generating gusts with each flap. These gusts, combined with Blaze's fire, created a mesmerizing dance of fire and wind. Amidst this ballet, a stray Ember, almost playful in its trajectory, managed to make contact with Skye. The Staravia, tagged, would now have to change her strategy as the next "it".
The ethereal dance of the afternoon sun illuminated Skye's plumage, making the Staravia appear as if she were an entity of light and shadow. Being "it" provided her with a unique advantage — the skies. The open heavens offered a panorama of the entire clearing, allowing her to devise a tactic that was both strategic and visually captivating.
With a graceful ascent, Skye soared, reaching a point where she looked like a mere dot. Her keen eyes never left the ground. Then, gathering speed, she started her descent. The wind caressed her feathers, generating a howling that sounded almost musical. As she approached the ground, she unfurled her wings to their full expanse and unleashed a flurry of Air Cutters, slicing through the air in unpredictable patterns.
Custos, relying on his agile nature, employed a combination of Quick Attack and Endure to dodge and occasionally absorb the slicing winds. His movements were akin to a dancer's — graceful, yet filled with purpose. Blaze, in contrast, huffed, releasing billows of Smog to disrupt Skye's vision. The two strategies, combined with Venus's Poison Powder, created a thick, swirling cloud of obscurity.
But Skye wasn't done. She employed Screech, an ear-piercing sound that resonated through the clearing. The Pokémon momentarily faltered, their coordination disrupted. Seizing this chance, Skye swiftly tagged Venus with a light Wing Attack, relegating her to the role of "it" once more.
Venus, once again bearing the mantle of "it", displayed why nature had gifted Bulbasaurs with such a diverse arsenal. The clearing seemed to respond to her, plants rustling, and shadows deepening.
With a deep-rooted connection to the earth, Venus utilized Sleep Powder. Instead of a direct release, she guided the powder, making it drift unpredictably. Skye, despite her aerial prowess, found herself swerving to avoid the mesmerizing purple clouds. On the ground, Blaze countered with fiery spirals of Fire Fang, burning away pockets of the sleep-inducing mist.
Custos and Venus engaged in a dynamic dance, reminiscent of their earlier face-off. This time, however, Venus went on the offensive. A rapid barrage of Bullet Seed met Custos's Aura Sphere. The collision of energies made the very air crackle with intensity.
The climax of this session was Venus's Take Down. With a grunt, she charged at Skye, her path somewhat obfuscated by the lingering smog and powder. Skye, thinking quickly, dropped to the ground, only to be met with Venus's onslaught. Their collision was gentle but enough to tag Skye. This maneuver highlighted Venus's tactical brilliance, utilizing her environment and the actions of others to her advantage.
Skye, bearing the weight of being "it" for the second time, knew she had to innovate. A direct approach had previously served her well, but now she needed to deceive.
Starting with Steel Wing, Skye illuminated her feathers, creating a dazzling array of reflective light. The gleaming spectacle momentarily stunned her companions, allowing her to dive and execute a series of Quick Attacks. This wasn't to tag but to destabilize, pushing Custos, Blaze, and Venus out of their formations.
Blaze, with fiery determination, responded with a towering pillar of Ember, attempting to limit Skye's aerial space. Custos, meanwhile, positioned himself as a sentinel. His Counter was ready, anticipating Skye's every move.
Skye's final play was nothing short of ingenious. Using Wing Attack, she agitated the earth beneath Venus, making the Bulbasaur lose her balance. And in that brief moment of vulnerability, Skye swooped down, tagging Venus with the gentlest of touches. This marked Venus as "it" yet again, emphasizing the cyclical nature of their intricate training.
Blaze, the embodiment of fierce energy, took a moment to strategize. The Houndoom's fiery eyes glinted, reflecting his internal fire. He was often perceived as a direct attacker, but today, he'd use guile over power. With a deafening Howl, Blaze started, amplifying his power and rallying the very essence of his being. It was a clear statement - he was ready.
Utilizing Fire Spin, Blaze created multiple miniature tornadoes of fire around the clearing. The intent was clear – to restrict movement and push the others into tight spaces. Venus, ever adaptable, swiftly used Vine Whip to grapple onto a nearby tree, hoisting herself to a higher vantage point. Skye, utilizing her agility, nimbly maneuvered between the fiery twisters, but Custos found himself in a challenging position. The Riolu darted, employing his Quick Attack to narrowly avoid the blazing vortexes.
Blaze, observing this, lunged with Bite. However, it wasn't aimed at Custos, but the ground beneath him. The resulting tremors threw Custos off balance, giving Blaze the perfect opportunity. Yet, instead of going for the tag, Blaze redirected his attention, releasing a volley of Ember towards Skye, who deftly countered with an Air Cutter to disperse the fiery projectiles.
Finally, in a climax of fire and determination, Blaze darted towards Venus with Fire Fang, illuminating the clearing with a breathtaking display. Venus, in a last-ditch effort, released a Sleep Powder. But Blaze's momentum was unstoppable, and the gentle contact was made. Once again, the torch of "it" was passed to Venus.
Being "it" repeatedly had taught Venus a lesson or two about strategy. This time, her approach was methodical. Understanding the importance of terrain, she employed Leech Seed on the ground, creating a minefield of sorts. Any Pokémon making contact with these seeds would be slowed down momentarily.
Skye, from above, viewed the beautiful geometric patterns created by the seeds. But she also recognized the trap and opted for a higher altitude. Custos, with precision, started clearing a path using Aura Sphere, detonating seeds from a safe distance. Blaze, however, was caught off-guard, getting entangled momentarily. He released a frustrated Smog, clouding the area.
Venus, not one to be outdone, utilized this to her advantage. Darting through the haze, she used her vines as feelers, sensing the location of her companions. After what felt like an eternity, a sudden Vine Whip lashed out, making contact with Skye, who had descended to get a clearer view. The tag was made, and Skye was "it" once more.
The pressure of being "it" multiple times had honed Skye's tactics. This time, she decided to harness the power of the wind. Rising high, she flapped vigorously, creating a mini tempest in the clearing. The winds weren't aggressive but were enough to unsettle her grounded companions.
Blaze was the first to respond, attempting to counteract the winds with his Fire Spin. The result was mesmerizing, fire dancing with the wind, creating spirals of warm gusts. Venus, adapting quickly, started rotating, using Razor Leaf to send a spiral of sharp leaves into the vortex, creating a visually stunning display.
Custos, in the midst of this, decided to turn defense into offense. He charged his Metal Claw and began deflecting the razor leaves, turning them into projectiles aimed everywhere. It was chaos and beauty intertwined.
In this whirlwind of moves, Skye dived down, targeting Blaze. But instead of a direct attack, she used her Wing Attack to kick up a dust cloud. As visibility reduced, Skye made her move, using Quick Attack to tag Custos, who was momentarily distracted by the redirected leaves. A soft touch, and the mantle of "it" was transferred to Riolu.
Having observed the tactics of his companions throughout the day, Custos was determined to cap off the training session with something unique. The young Riolu took a deep breath, centering himself. He began with a Force Palm into the ground, causing a ripple effect throughout the terrain, destabilizing the footing for all present.
Blaze, ever the agile one, began leaping from spot to spot, avoiding the unstable patches. Venus, adapting to the situation, spread out her vines, creating a makeshift net that anchored her securely. Skye, being airborne, was initially unaffected, but she soon realized that this was just the beginning.
Suddenly, from the shifting ground, metallic echoes began to resonate. Custos had initiated his Metal Claw, but not in the usual manner. He began rapidly striking the ground in rhythmic sequences, creating sound waves that disoriented his opponents. This 'sonic strategy' was something none of them had anticipated.
Blaze tried countering with a Howl, aiming to counteract the vibrations. Venus attempted to ground herself even more, extending her vines further out. Skye, meanwhile, started a counter rhythm with her Wing Attack, trying to disrupt Custos's flow.
In the middle of this symphony of moves and countermoves, Custos spied an opening. With a burst of speed from his Quick Attack, he darted straight for Venus. However, in a last-second twist, he used Bullet Punch, not on Venus, but on a rock beside her. The resulting ricochet sent the stone bouncing towards Skye. The Staravia, caught off guard by this unforeseen move, got gently tagged by the stone.
With that clever maneuver, the exhaustive training session finally came to an end. All Pokémon, out of breath but brimming with pride, gathered around Ash. Their teamwork, strategy, and bonds had been tested and reinforced. And as the sun dipped below the horizon, they knew they were one step closer to being ready for the challenges ahead.
