Chapter 5
The next day Violet and Peggy watched the recruits run through an obstacle course. All the men were having a good time except for Steve who was struggling dead last.
Violet tried not to grimace as she watched Steve struggling to catch his breath as he continued through the course. Her brows furrowed in concern as the recruits scrambled up a cargo net. She turned her attention away when Steve's foot got tangled. Her heart pounded in her chest knowing that it wasn't easy for the young man to be doing what he was doing at that moment. She turned to see Hodge climbing over him, smashing him in the face with his strength as he climbed.
Steve grimaced as he hauled himself up the cargo net to get to the next area.
Violet held her breath wondering how long he was going to hold out on this thing. It concerned her that there was bullying going on and that was something that rubbed her the wrong way when it came to things. She could only hope that he would hold out and prove everyone wrong that he was the proper choice in the end.

Violet moved with Peggy as she looked at the stopwatch in her hand. She took a soft breath as she watched Steve crawling through the mud beneath a barbed wire net.
Hodge decided in his wisdom to kick out one of the support bars causing the wire to fall on Steve.
Violet felt her anger beginning to rise. She wasn't about to allow this to go on any longer. She moved forward. "HODGE!" She yelled, her voice coming out more of a snarl. "Over there now!" She pointed to an area where he couldn't cause problems for Steve. "Drop down and give me 20!" She saw that he was about to get mouthy with her. "I would think again before using your words Hodge. Do it now." Her lips curled in anger as she looked at him. "NOW!"
Hodge grumbled under his breath and moved to where Violet had demanded him to go.
Violet looked over to where Steve was wondering if he would be able to get himself out of the problem that Hodge had put him into. She had to admit that so far he was proving himself even though he was coming in dead last.

Violet walked with Colonel Phillips and Dr. Erskine while Peggy was busy with the recruits who were doing jumping jacks.
"I guess I just don't understand the European sense of humor, Doctor." Colonel Phillips said as he walked towards the group.
Violet pursed her lips together knowing that Colonel Phillips wasn't happy.
"You're not thinking of picking Rogers, are you?" He hoped that he was wrong with the whole idea of the good Doctor picking Rogers to do the experiment that they would be doing so soon.
"I am more than just thinking about it. He is the clear choice." Doctor Erskine explained as they walked.
"When you invited a ninety-pound asthmatic onto my Army base, I let it slide because I assumed he'd be useful to you. Like a gerbil. I never thought you'd pick him."
They came to a stop near an open truck that had a crate of grenades inside of it.
"You put a needle in that guy's arm, it's gonna come out the other side."
Violet looked over trying her best to not tear her eyes away as he struggled to do his pushups. Her heart clenched in her chest knowing how it felt all those years ago when she was young and frail with her older brother.
"Look at him! He's making me cry."
"I am searching for qualities beyond the physical." Dr. Erskine said, looking over at Colonel Phillips.
"Do you know how long it took to set up this project? The groveling I had to do in front of Senator Brandt's committee?"
"I'm well aware of your efforts."
Hodge powered through his push-ups.
"Hodge passed every test we gave him. He's big, he's fast, and he takes orders. In short, he's a soldier."
Violet scoffed, shaking her head.
"He's a bully."
Colonel Phillips stared at Erskine for a moment before reaching for the crate in the truck.
Violet blinked a few times. "Sir?"
"You don't win wars with niceness, Doctor." Colonel Phillips grabbed a grenade. "You win them with guts." He pulled the pin and hurled the grenade. "GRENADE!"
Violet watched it tumble into the grass stopping in front of the recruits. She knew that it was rather fake but she had a feeling that it was a test that Colonel Phillips was putting someone into.
The rest of the recruits scrambled away.
Hodge yelped as he threw himself under a nearby jeep.
Peggy made her way for the grenade, but Steve got there first, throwing himself upon it.
"Everybody DOWN!" Steve waited for the explosion, but nothing happened. He opened his eyes looking rather confused.
Violet's lips quirked as she watched Colonel Phillips glaring at the small man. She had to admit that was the one thing that they were looking for and that was Steve Rogers and his courage along with heart.
Doctor Erskine simply smiled at Colonel Phillips knowing that Steve was the right choice.
Hodge peaked out from under the jeep looking rather ashamed of what he had done not throwing himself onto the grenade.
Steve looked up seeing Doctor Erksine, Violet, and Colonel Phillips there. "Uh...is this a test?"
"He's still skinny." Colonel Phillips said as he moved away from the Doctor and Violet.
Doctor Erskine smiled looking back at Steve.
Violet put her hands behind her back as her lips quirked a bit before turning to Doctor Erskine. "I do hope you know what you are doing Doctor."
"I do, Agent Howlett. Meet me tonight in his tent. You know most everything that I'm planning on doing."
Violet took a breath and nodded her head. "Alright." She said softly knowing that Dr. Erskine needed to go over quite a bit of stuff, but he also wanted her there for a reason because she knew that he knew that she was worried about the whole thing and he wanted to put her at ease. "I'll be there tonight for your talk with Mr. Rogers."
"Thank you."
Violet nodded her head again before turning on her heels to walk away. Her mind began to race of what Jimmy would think of this whole thing. She knew that her brother was still rather much on the fence about making a super soldier and what the SSR was even doing. She could only hope that what Doctor Erskine was doing was the right thing.
