Chapter 8: Welcome Home and developing feelings

On board the freighter, Artoo brought over some more food for Anakin and Padmé as they ate breakfast. "Thank you, Artoo," Padmé said when they droid a bread and a bowl full of cloudberries before her. "You said that you were adopted after getting off of Ilum. How is that possible? It's widely known that a Jedi cannot have any ties to their birth families or have more than professional relationships," she enquired, making light conversation with Anakin.

"That's true for the most part. However, things have changed," eating a cloudberry. "Yet things have changed, as we can now communicate with our parents. My mom, for instance, knows that a Jedi's life is difficult and, at times, dangerous, but she's been very supportive. It also helps that she is on a world within the Republic instead of that dust bowl and that I can communicate with her whenever I am given the chance."

"Another thing I am grateful for is after I made my lightsaber, Mace became more than my Jedi Master as he practically raised me," eating another cloudberry.

"He became your Master and father," finishing for him. "It's still hard for me to believe that someone like Master Windu would adopt someone."

"Let me guess. It's because he always seems so cold, strict, and distant," laughing a little when she gave a gentle nod. "That's just him. For as long as I've known him, Mace has always been by the by-the-books type of person with a serious devotion to rules."

"That must be exhausting," commented Padmé, who then added. "I wonder what else the Order might change? Like it's views on compassion."

"Compassion can mean anything. From my point of view, it would sometimes mean unconditional love is central to a Jedi's life." His lips then grew into a wide smile. "So, you might say we are encouraged to love."

"You have changed so much," Padmé had to catch herself from saying anything further. Silently wondering what was on his mind.

Padmé blinked when he returned her words. "Glad to see that I am not the only one. You've changed a little since the last time I saw you." The two stared into each other's eyes for a few minutes. Anakin quickly composed himself when he realized they were too close. "Well, I am certainly glad we will be back on Naboo. Even though this assignment will be a good way to get away from all of the drama on Coruscant."

Padmé quickly agreed with what he said. "True, but before we do anything else, we will have to go to the palace and speak with Queen Jamillia and her advisors about the current situation in the Senate." She then flashed him a smile, "after the meeting is over, you can change out of your civilian clothes."

"So you noticed."

"That you are not really comfortable wearing anything outside of your usual attire," confirming with a knowing voice. "Doesn't it get old to have to wear the same thing day in and day out?"

He frowned. "Not really. After so many years, it all starts to blend in together, though that's the life of a Jedi."

"Sounds a little boring," she quipped. "However, like you said, once we get on Naboo, we will be able to get away from the drama elsewhere. You may even be surprised with where we will be staying."

That got his attention as he leaned in with interest. "Do you know something I don't?"

"Maybe," she said with a little teasing in her voice.

The freighter eventually docked at the great port city of Theed, and the refugees started to dismount with the things they had brought from Coruscant. Unfortunately, unlike Coruscant, this city had a much calmer atmosphere. It was exactly how Anakin remembered it from when he dropped his family off when they first arrived, and yet the place never failed to make him happy. There was something about being on Naboo that helped him feel at ease. More than whenever he was on Coruscant, which was mainly a planet of steel and stone. If anything, it was more peaceful here. The energy of the planet felt similar to when he was on Yavin with Darra and Master Antana. Both Anakin and Padmé lugged their bags across a familiar square where they each remembered the battle with the droid army of the Trade Federation. Their companion R2-D2 was easily rolling behind them, whistling a happy tune, probably because he was glad to finally be home again.

"I sometimes wish that I grew up here instead of on Tatooine. It's a lot more pleasant," Padmé laughed at his remark. She covertly stole glances at him, noting the serenity and happiness on his face. "The capital is just as magnificent as I remember it."

"Then you should make it a point to come here more often," she halfheartedly joked. "Assuming you ever get a vacation or some time off. The waterfalls and meadows here are very beautiful."

"Wishful thinking. What about you, though? When was your first time in the capital?" He asked.

She explained her first time visiting the capital when she was a little girl. Growing up in a village, she never saw a waterfall. The first time she heard it made her very happy. Just watching the waterfall would set her mind at ease. "Before that, I had never seen a waterfall in my life. I thought they were so beautiful. I never thought that one day I would live in the palace."

"So you were the youngest Queen elected?" He asked after she explained how she joined the Apprentice Legislator when she was only eight and scored so high on her education certificate.

"I wasn't the youngest Queen ever elected, Ani. But now, looking back on it, I'm not sure I was old enough." The two then looked at each other. I'm not sure I was ready."

"Fate has a funny thing of pointing us to something even if we do not believe we're ready for something," he commented, earning a semi-curious look from her. "The people thought you served thought you did a good job. I even heard they tried to amend the constitution so you could stay in office longer."

"I was relieved when my two terms were up. But when the Queen asked me to serve as Senator, I could refuse her." She passionately said. Her job as a Senator, serving her home planet, was something she felt like she had to do—a way for her to preserve democracy.

"I agree with her. I think the Republic needs you. All of your hard work since becoming a Senator has helped a lot of people, and you have a powerful voice that the people you represent respect," Anakin looked at her with a genuine smile. "Protecting your people and staying true to your ideals is a worthwhile goal. I'm glad you chose to serve."

"Thanks, Ani. I'm glad you think so," she sincerely said. "You are one of the few people who believe that what I am doing is for the good of everyone else. There are several who believe that women do not belong in politics, like some of the male Senators and people here on Naboo. They are just so dead-set in their old ways."

"Then they obviously need a wake-up call and evolve. After all, I happened to know a Senator, and she is very passionate in her ideals and is well respected by her peers."

"Do I know this person?" A twinge of jealousy filled her by how he spoke of the person.

He shot her a cocky grin. "I would hope so. She's incredibly beautiful with amazing brown eyes, has a powerful voice that I admire, and is determined to do the right thing." She playfully nudged him when his grin got bigger.

The jealousy she felt quickly evaporated as her heart soared. His eyes showed he was talking about her. "You ass." The two continued to happily talk as they arrived at the palace.

Queen Jamillia and her council members inside the throne room listened as Padmé explained the situation on how thousands of Republic Senators left to join Count Dooku and the Separatists. She believed that more would soon join them. "This is occurring almost daily. If the Senate votes to create an army, then I'm sure it's going to push us into a civil war."

Bibble was unhappy with the state of things on Coruscant. "It's unthinkable," dispassionately voicing his opinion. "There hasn't been a full-scale war since the formation of the Republic."

Queen Jamillia sadly looked at Padmé. "Do you see any way through negotiations to bring the Separatists back into the Republic?" Her calm voice betrayed the sad expression on her face.

"Not if they feel threatened," she evenly replied. "My guess is that they will turn to the Commerce Guild or Trade Federation for help," a small edge of frustration laced her. She had a feeling the two would do everything they could to make a profit off of the war. Anakin placed a comforting hand on her shoulder upon sensing her frustration. In return, Padmé gave him a small smile, and her eyes said thanks.

An annoyed Bibble then said. "It is outrageous. But after four trials in the Supreme Court, Nute Gunray is still the Viceroy of the Trade Federation," he will never forget that despicable coward for what he did a decade ago. The mere thought of the Neimoidian made his blood boil. "I fear the Republic is powerless to resolve this crisis."

"We must keep our faith in the Republic," Jamillia declared. "The day we stop believing democracy can work is the day we truly lose," rising from her seat and rounding the table."

"Let's pray that day never comes," Padmé followed beside her majesty with Anakin coming behind.

"In the meantime, we must consider your own safety," the Queen wanted to change the conversation and motion for everyone else to follow. "Do you have any ideas on where you will be staying?"

"I was thinking of the Lake Country. There are some places there that are very isolated," Padmé answered. "I feel confident that I will be safe since the Jedi Council assigned Anakin to be my Head of Security."

The Queen, advisors, handmaidens, and security guards all looked at Anakin. "What are your thoughts about this?" Asked Bibble.

Anakin replied, "seeing as how this is her home, it stands to reason that she would have more knowledge of the isolated areas. If she is confident that the place is secure enough for us to stay while we are here, then I will trust her judgment." Padmé sent him a grateful smile.

Jamillia then smiled, "then it is decided." She then went on to say, "Padmé, I had an audience with your father yesterday, and he is aware of what is happening. He hopes you will visit him and your mother before you go to the Lake Country. They have been very worried about you."

She then turned her gaze to the person standing behind the Senator. "I would recommend the same for you, Anakin. Your mom would not say it, but she seemed very worried about you. It might ease her conscience if you go visit her."

Anakin had to resist the urge to roll his eyes; his mom knew that being a Jedi would be dangerous work. But also knew it was the life he had chosen. Obi-Wan had already given him permission to go see her as long as he didn't draw attention to himself or Padmé. "I agree. I will pay her and my stepfamily a visit." He resumed after clearing his throat, "would it be possible for Senator Amidala and I to get changed? There's no reason for us to have to continue wearing our disguises."

"Of course," Jamillia motioned for the handmaidens to come over. "These two will show you the changing rooms.

The handmaidens took Anakin and Padmé to one of the many rooms so they could get changed. Padmé was the first to get changed as she now wore a light blue two-piece dress and had her hair down in a loose ringlets, held back by a simple light blue headband. Exiting her room, she silently wondered what Anakin would think of her outfit. Would he like it or not?

The young Senator approached the room he was in, and just when she was about to reach out to knock on the door, it opened. Anakin was in his Jedi robes. Anakin stopped dead in his tracks when she stood in front of him wearing something new. Unknowingly, he had to admit that she looked more beautiful, even while wearing casual clothes seemed to have enhanced her beauty. The monster inside of him screamed for him to claim her, but his rational mind won out. "You look amazing," quickly averting his eyes. "Shall we go?"

"Of course," Padmé said with a hint of satisfaction in her voice. She noticed how his eyes looked her over and had an idea on what he was thinking. "After we get done visiting my family, we can go visit Shmi and the others."

Leaving the palace, Padmé led him to their destination. Her parents' house. Truthfully, she was happy at the opportunity to see Sola, her parents, and two nieces again. It had been months since she had seen them, and her thoughts silently drifted toward her sister. The minute Sola would see Anakin, she would immediately assume they were dating and enquire about her sex life. Then there was her mother and father, who undoubtedly wanted answers about how serious the situation was—more notably, her Dad would like to know. Despite being an adult, he still viewed her as a little girl. A small part of her hoped that they would at least like Anakin. After all, they had met Shmi, Beru, and the Lars's' before. They had even had dinner at each other's houses.

"There's my house," Padmé happily exclaimed. Anakin's eyes widened with surprise as the house was amazing, in his opinion. It was almost similar to the house his mom, Owen, Beru, and Cliegg bought, though this one was bigger and had a nice brick foundation. Her description of the house was better than what he thought. He felt a little unsure that he would be welcomed. "What? Don't tell me your shy!" A light amount of teasing came from her.

Before he could respond, a pair of voices were heard. "Aunt Padmé! Aunt Padmé!" Two little girls came running down the stairs. Padmé's smile grew; bending over, she hugged and kissed them both.

"Ryoo, Pooja," Padmé hugged and twirled them around. "I'm so happy to see you two. My, you two have gotten so big." She then looked at Anakin, who had a wide smile on his face. "Anakin, these are my nieces, Ryoo and Pooja. Girls, this Anakin."

The girls were about to say hello when they spotted the droid next to him. Artoo!" They shouted in unison, and giggling, they ran over to hug the droid.

Laughing herself, Padmé apologized. "Sorry, Ani. But once Artoo comes, all of their attention will go to him. He's like their little hero." Artoo happily beeped and started rolling around in circles while Ryoo and Pooja laughed and chased him.

Padmé led Anakin inside, where she then called, "Mom, Dad. I'm home." Anakin felt his mind ease somewhat as the home had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A smile was brought to the young Jedi Padawan's face when he saw Padmé hug the older woman he believed to be her mother.

"Padmé sweetheart, I am so glad you are here," Jobal sighed as she pulled back from the embrace. Her eyes then went to the young man standing at the doorframe. "Who is this young man?"

"Right," Padmé turned around. "Anakin, this is my mother, Jobal Naberrie. Mom, this is Anakin Skywalker. He's Shmi's son," she introduced him.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Naberrie," Anakin walked forward and shook her hand. "Padmé has told me much about you."

Another individual soon entered the dining room, "well, would you look at what the cat dragged in? My adorable baby sister has finally decided to stop by for a visit." The two laughed and hugged one another. "And who might this handsome young man be?" She gestured to Anakin.

"Sola, this Anakin. You remember that little boy who blew the Trade Federation ship all those years ago?" Shooting her sister a look. "Anakin, this is my older sister Sola. As you can no doubt see, she is way older than me," she teased back, earning a nudge from her.

"Only by ten years," Sola gently chided before moving toward Anakin. "Both Shmi and my sister have spoken highly of you. Anyway, it is nice to finally meet you," extending a hand to him, which he took into his own and shook. Padmé turned her attention to her father, who just entered.

"Dad," she exclaimed, going over to hug him.

"Well, would you look at this? My little girl has finally decided to come home after so many months," he leaned down to kiss Padmé on the head. "Have you finally decided to drop being a politician and move back in with us?"

"Sorry to disappoint you, Dad, but no," Padmé smiled. "My job is too important."

"A father can only hope," Ruwee sighed. He stood straight and looked at his new house guest. "And you, young man," narrowing his eyes at Anakin, who quickly froze. "What are your intentions toward my daughter?"

Nervousness surged through Anakin as he found it hard to speak. An uncomfortable silence went throughout the room, with everyone staring at the two. Ruwee quickly broke it with a laugh and tapped the young man's shoulder.

"I'm just playing with you, son. Ruwee Naberrie. Nice to meet you", he said, offering his hand. Anakin shook it.

"Anakin Skywalker," recovering quickly and schooling his features. Force, why was he so nervous? He and Padmé were only meant to be friends, nothing more, he reminded himself.

"Oh, you're Mrs. Skywalker-Lars's son," Ruwee said. "I remember now you are also the person who destroyed that droid ship orbiting our planet."

"Dad teaches at University. Ask him anything you want about Naboo history", Padmé provided. Anakin nodded.

"You're a Jedi, right?" Sola asked after giving him a once over and checking his attire.

Anakin then answered. "Yes, but I'm still a Padawan," pointing to his braid. "Until I take the trials, I am still considered an Apprentice."

"Padawan or not, you arrived just in time for dinner," Jobal put a bowl full of food on the table and took a seat. "I hope you are hungry, Anakin."

"A little," he said with a warm smile, pushing away his shyness.

However, the warm gratitude was not lost on Padmé, who quickly said. "He's being polite, Mom. We're starving," she shot him a wink when the two looked at each other. "Our meeting with the Queen left us hungry, and we haven't had anything since breakfast when we were on the ship."

The smile on Jobal's face grew wide as she looked at Ruwee and Sola with a knowing expression. To Anakin, this felt almost natural; the only thing missing was his mother and Mace, and probably Beru, Owen, and Cliegg. But this was still nice, in his opinion. Plus, the positive emotion radiating off of Padmé flowed out in waves, showing she was really happy to be back home with her family. Artoo soon came in with Ryoo and Pooja. Their grandmother told the two to go wash up for dinner. A brief while later, they two reemerged into the dining room and sat next to Sola.

"Well, you've come to the right place at the right time," Ruwee grunted as he looked at Anakin. "When you come to this house, you better have an appetite. So eat up, son."

Taking Mr. Naberrie's advice, Anakin took a huge, helping with what he could while Sola and Jobal passed bowls of food around the table. The latter seemed to like the fact that Anakin took in her food with such enthusiasm; the way he ate her food filled her with pride. She doubted they didn't feed them right at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Stealing a glance at her husband, she could see that he was silently judging the young man beside him. What caught her attention was how Padmé would subtly steal glances at Anakin and note how her hand was on his. Did her daughter like him?

Speaking of her youngest daughter, she spoke. "Honey, it is so good to see you safe. We have been so worried," concern laced in his voice.

Ruwee knew how his wife could be and that she had been increasingly worried these past few weeks. Seeing the tension in the room with Padmé glaring disapprovingly at her, he quickly stepped in. "Dear–"

"I know, I know," Jobal waved a hand, dismissing any further discussion about the matter. "But I had to say it. Now it's done."

"This is really interesting," Sola quipped, taking a sip of her water. "Anakin, did you know that you are the first boyfriend my sister has ever brought home."

That made Anakin blush a bit as he felt Mr. Naberrie's eyes on him. Sola and her daughters started giggling. Composing himself, he found his voice. "I'm afraid you are wrong, Mrs. Naberrie. Padmé and I are nothing more than friends. The Senate has assigned me to protect her. There is nothing romantic between us."

"Yet, I wish there was jerk," Padmé mentally cringed. The frown on her face did not go unnoticed by either Jobal or Sola. No matter how much she tried to hide. "Our relationship is strictly professional," she said to her sister, who grinned widely.

"A bodyguard?" Jobal instantly became alert. "Oh, Padmé, they didn't tell us it was that serious!" The worried tone in her voice was visible.

Padmé groaned and sighed. "It's not. I promise," she said. "I'm not in any danger, Mom," wanting to end the topic of conversation.

"Honey, when are you going to settle down and leave that life behind?" Jobal pressed on. "Haven't you had enough? I know I certainly have!" Anakin felt Padmé grip on his wrist tighten as it was clear as day that her mom did not approve of her career.

"Mom, I'm not in any danger," she said with a hint of finality.

"Is she?" Ruwee looked directly at Anakin. The Padawan recognized the man's concern in his eyes and heard the fear in his voice.

Thinking to himself for a minute, Anakin felt like the man should know the truth. "Yes, unfortunately, she is," he felt Padmé's nails dig into his skin and caught the glare she was sending him. He then added, "but not much. The Senate believed that it would be prudent for her to return. However, rest assured that Master Obi-Wan is investigating the matter, so this should be over soon enough."

Ruwee gave him a quick nod as Padmé shot him a smile, but her eyes promised retribution. "Well, I appreciate your honesty on the matter," Ruwee said. The room fell silent for a couple minutes until he brought up a new subject. "Padmé, once mentioned you are a decent mechanic. Is that true?"

"It's a hobby of mine and something I like to do whenever I need to clear my mind," he confirmed.

A ghost smile appeared on Ruwee's lips. "So, I take it you are well-versed around engines and know how to repair them should they fall apart or stop working."

"Stop with the interrogation, Dad," Padmé stepped into the conversation. "You know how good Anakin is. Remember that protocol droid Threepio? Anakin built him when he was only a boy back on Tatooine."

"You really built that droid from scratch?" an amazed Jobal enquired. 3PO might have an eccentric personality, but the droid was a great companion and a big help. Whenever she and Shmi would get together to have dinner at each other's house, the droid would help out in the kitchen and was a big help whenever they would head into the city.

Anakin's cheeks turned pink. "Mostly yes. I never got the chance to give him any coverings before I left to begin my training," he admitted. "It was only when I returned to Tatooine to save my mother did I see him again. Once we boarded the ship, Owen and I started doing some maintenance on him, and I spent a short amount of time working on him when I was here."

"Then, if it wouldn't be too much to ask. Could you join Ruwee in the garage?" Jobal asked. "He's close to getting rid of that speeder."

Ruwee sighed, "it's a real shame, too. I loved that old speeder, but no mechanic would go near her."

"You didn't ask my mom or stepbrother?"

"I would, but Shmi has been too busy with her job at the orphanage, and Owen has a lot on his plate with his new job," the man sadly said.

Anakin gave him a soft smile. "Well, perhaps I can find what's wrong with it," he suggested. "And besides, I can use something to do before I visit my family. Do you have any spare tools?" He didn't know it, but Anakin found that he had just scored some brownie points with Ruwee.

Dinner was a nice affair, with everyone talking and Jobal, Ruwee, and Sola getting to know Anakin a bit more. After dinner was over, Anakin and Ruwee went to the garage, where the latter showed him the speeder he was talking about. Mr. Naberrie brought over some tools and a clean rag. Cracking his knuckles, Anakin got to work on the speeder. The man was right about the thing being old, but he could tell that it would still be able to work.

For nearly two hours, Ruwee watched as the young man fixed the speeder's engine by installing a new alternator, putting in the new wires, and replacing the battery. "That should do it. You can turn it over now," Anakin cleaned his hands and put the tools he used away.

Doing as he said, Ruwee was amazed at how well the engine was running. The thing was purring like a nuzzle shrew. He had never seen anyone work that well with an engine before. "Holy kriff! I thought I was going to have to trash this thing."

Anakin chuckled. "No reason to let a good speeder go," he easily commented. "The speeder will work again. But I recommend you give it a bath and replace some old parts with new ones. Do that, and this thing will look like the day you just bought it."

Ruwee laughed, "thank you. This thing is almost like a person to me."

The two of them left the garage and began walking through the garden. Anakin found himself more relaxed than before as they began talking. "Sometimes I'd wish I traveled more," the older man said. "But I must say that I'm happy here."

"Padmé tells me you teach at the University."

"Yeah, yeah. Before that, I was a builder," Ruwee answered with a nod. "I also worked for the Refugee Relief Movement when I was younger."

"So, that's where she gets it from," Anakin surmised while Ruwee gave him a confused look. "Padmé told me how she was a part of the movement before joining the Youth Legislative program."

"I guess so," Ruwee laughed.

Back inside the house, Padmé, Jobal, and Sola were drying the dishes. When Padmé put a plate away, she automatically knew what would happen when she saw the sly grin on her sister's face. "So that's the young man who got your attention? He's much more handsome than I thought he'd be."

"Sola, stop it!"

"I saw the way you were stealing glances at him during dinner," Sola teased. "Not that I blame you, as he is nice to look at. Oh, if I was ten years younger."

"And single," an embarrassed Padmé chimed.

"Right, I always forget that part," thinking of her husband, Darred. "But don't change the subject, baby sister. I might be older and married, but you, Padmé. You are still young and single. Or are you telling me that little Miss Priss and proper Senator is too stubborn to admit her feelings for someone?"

"Mom, would you tell her to stop," Padmé cried out in embarrassment and frustration.

"Stop it, Sola."

Even though she may have said that Jobal had a wide grin, her eyes twinkled, further annoyed Padmé. "You two are impossible!" She then let out an exasperated breath. Anakin and I are just friends. Our relationship is strictly professional," looking out the window to see Anakin talking to her Dad. Whatever it was they were discussing, they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The grin on Sola's face morphed into a smile, "mmhm, keep telling yourself that. You cannot fool your older sister. You can deny it all you want, but your eyes show you want him. However, as I said, I do not blame you; he's probably already had a girlfriend or has many admirers. They're obviously fed Anakin well on Coruscant for him to have a body like his."

"You're impossible," fixing her sister a withering glare that told her to drop the subject. "Anyway, how is Darred doing?"

"He's well. He has been very busy with his construction project at the University."

While the ladies talked, Anakin and Ruwee continued talking until they neared the door, where Ruwee's expression became more serious. What Queen Jamillia and the young man had told him about the situation regarding his daughter scared him. He felt there was something else that he should know. Padmé might have grown to become an independent adult and not like the idea of him or the rest of the family knowing too much, but she was still his little girl.

"So tell me, son, how serious is this thing? How much danger is my daughter really in?" Deciding to be blunt with the young man.

Anakin didn't hesitate as he had a feeling this would come up when they were all having dinner. The man before him obviously cared a lot for his daughter's well-being and thus deserved to know the truth. "There have been two attempts on her life. Chances are there will be more. However, I wasn't lying or trying to minimize the situation. Master Obi-Wan is one of the Order's most promising Jedi Knights and is currently tracking down the assassins. The situation won't last long."

"I don't want anything to happen to her," Ruwee felt his fatherly instincts go into overdrive. "These assassins. Do you have an idea who hired them?"

Sucking in a breath, "we believe Count Dooku, Nute Gunray, and Ferus Olin are the ones who put the bounty on her," he saw the fear on Mr. Naberrie's face and could feel it rolling off of him in waves. "I give you my word that I will do everything in my power to protect her."

"Thank you, and I appreciate you being straight with me on the matter," Ruwee's eyes softened at Anakin. The young Jedi gave him a curt nod before walking into the house, where they met Padmé, Sola, and Jobal.

Anakin looked at Jobal after giving Padmé a small smile. "Thank you for dinner, Mrs. Naberrie. It was very delicious. I will be back tomorrow afternoon to take Padmé to our destination," giving her a respectful nod and then turning away to head out of the main door.

"I like him," Jobal said to her husband, who nodded in agreement when their daughters left to go to Padmé's old room. "I can tell he is a good man and that Padmé likes him. Yet she is far too stubborn to admit to it."

"I wonder who she got that from," Ruwee chuckled as Jobal playfully glared at him. "However, there is something we need to talk about, dear," his expression quickly became serious. The two then went into the living room.

Twenty minutes later, Anakin arrived at the house his mom and stepfamily bought several months ago. Walking up the stairs, he approached the door and rang the doorbell. A split second later, it was opened by Threepio, who now wore some gold plating. "Master Ani. Oh, bless my circuits, it's so good to see you again. Welcome home," he said happily said.

Anakin couldn't help but chuckle, "it's good to see you as well, Threepio," stepping into the house. "Is anyone home?"

"Mistress Shmi and Mistress Beru had returned not too long ago and are currently in the living room with Masters Owen and Cliegg," the droid informed him. "Mistress Shmi has also been concerned from watching the Holo-news and since her meeting with Queen Jamillia."

"That was to be expected," another voice entered the conversation. The two looked to see Owen standing in the hall. "Hey, Anakin. Welcome back," the two hugged each other. When they pulled away, Owen quickly added, "if I were you, I'd go see Mom real quick."

"Touché," Anakin smiled at his stepbrother and went to the living room, where they found Beru, Cliegg, and Shmi sitting on the sofas. "Hey, everyone. Guess who's back."

Shmi was the first person to hop off the sofa and wrap him in a tight hug, which he returned. "I take it you heard from the Queen about what was going on," it was more of a statement than a question.

"The Queen told us that the situation on Coruscant had become much more serious than what was originally believed and that a Jedi would be accompanying her while she was here," Shmi explained.

"A lot has happened," Anakin began. "But she is right. Padmé is in hiding, and I was assigned to protect her by the Senate and the Jedi Council. I can only stay for the night. Then, she and I will be going to a secluded spot in the afternoon."

"It's that serious, huh?" Cliegg enquired.

"Yes, unfortunately," Anakin nodded as he shook his stepfather's hand. A month after he left Naboo, Cliegg had visited the doctor, where he received a cybernetic leg.

Later that night, at the Naberrie house, Padmé found it hard to sleep as her mind reflected on what might happen at the Lake Country. Despite being forced to go into hiding while the Republic Senate decided whether they should go to war with the Separatists or not, she was happy that Anakin had been the one who had been chosen to accompany her. Even though it had only been a few days, having him by her side made her feel at ease. The young Senator got out of bed and went to the kitchen to make herself a cup of hot chocolate. Entering the kitchen, she found Sola in her nightgown with a mug in her hands.

"You having trouble sleeping?"

"A little," Padmé replied. Sola then filled another mug filled with hot chocolate and handed it to her. "Thanks," accepting the cup. The two sisters went to go sit on one of the sofas in the living room.

"So you really cannot tell us where you're going?"

"I'm afraid not," sipping her mug.

"Well, at least you will not be alone," Sola remarked. "You know this might be a blessing in disguise, little sister. You will be all alone with a handsome Jedi. Who knows what the two of you might get into while alone and unsupervised." Padmé rolled her eyes as she knew Sola would not easily let up. Sola then pressed, "what? You cannot say that he isn't nice to look at."

"He's all right, I guess."

"Just all right?" Sola gave an amused look. "Well, if you don't want him, then I'm confident that one my friends who are single will be more than happy to. . ."

"Don't you dare," Padmé cut her off with a stern glare. Leaning back in her seat when her eyes twinkled. "All right, he's breathtakingly handsome. Are you happy now?" Sola smiled at her admittance.

"I knew it! I knew you were attracted to him!" The older Naberrie sister laughed. "Now tell your big sister how you intend to ensnare him."

"Force save me," Padmé looked up at the ceiling.

"No time for that now. We have to make you look irresistible for when he comes tomorrow to pick you up in the afternoon," Sola squealed. "Luckily for you, baby sister. I have an idea of how you can make him yours. He may be a Jedi, but he will find keeping his eyes off you very hard."

She could only imagine what Sola was thinking. Padmé shook her head, "do not get any crazy ideas. I don't want to scare him away."

"Fine! Now hush up," Sola ordered. This was going to be an interesting development.

The following day, Anakin arrived at the Naberrie house with 3PO and his travel bag, ringing the doorbell. He was let in by Jobal. "Welcome back, Anakin," she led him to the dining room. Would you like anything to drink or eat while you wait for Padmé?"

"No, I'm fine, Mrs. Naberrie. Thank you, though," he dismissed, then turned around when Padmé's nieces came running into the room. "Kind of lively for an afternoon," the young Padawan quipped.

"Ryoo and Pooja are off for the week, so they have a lot of energy," Jobal smiled at her granddaughters.

Ryoo walked up to Anakin with a big smile on her face while Pooja approached Threepio. "Are you really a Jedi?"

"Something like that," Anakin smiled at the small girl. "I'm what they call a Padawan. It's like an Apprentice. So I am still learning."

"Mommy says that you're very handsome and that Aunt Padmé likes you a lot," Ryoo giggled when Anakin's cheeks turned pink. "Do you like Aunt Padmé?"

Jobal intervened when Anakin was at a loss for words. "Ryoo, that is a personal matter between your Aunt and Anakin. Whatever kind of relationship they have is not your business," Jobal chided her oldest grandchild. But a ghost smile appeared on her lips.

Not too long later, Sola entered the dining room with Padmé, and Anakin felt his mouth go dry as he drank in her appearance. Force, she looked beautiful. She was in a yellow, pink, and purple backless dress that clasped around her neck, two silver bands wrapped around her arms, and a pair of heels. "Kriff man put those eyes back in your head, and get control of yourself," he mentally shouted at himself. Using the Force to compose himself and find his voice, he said, "you look amazing, Padmé."

She, in turn, smiled at him as she was unsure about wearing this dress, but it was one of the few her sister Sola had insisted that she'd bring with her and where for the day. Plus, the look in Anakin's eyes showed that it had gotten a reaction out of him. "Thank you, Anakin. Um, shall we go?"

"Right, of course," quickly agreeing with her. Anakin didn't notice the smiles on Sola's or Jobal's faces when he and Padmé left the house with R2 and 3PO.

As soon as they were out of the house, Jobal sent Ryoo and Pooja away, leaving only her and Sola in the room. "I take it the reason Padmé was in that dress is because of you?"

"Maybe," Sola said with a sly grin. "My baby sister has got it bad for him, and he also has feelings for her. Did you see the look in his eyes when she entered?"

Jobal laughed and shook her head. Yesterday, during and after dinner, she could tell that her youngest daughter was attracted to the young Jedi by the way she looked at him and held his hand underneath the table. "Those two might end up together, and you may have a brother-in-law in the future. However, that will be if they actually decide if they want to be together. It is a real shame the Jedi have forbidden romantic relationships."

After a short ferry ride to Varykino, Anakin, and Padmé walked up the steps when Paddy insisted they go check the place out while he, the droids, and the handmaidens took their luggage bags up. "This is place is beautiful," said Anakin as they walked to the stone railing to overlook the large crystal blue lake.

"We used to come here for school retreats," Padmé smiled as they stopped at the railing. "We would swim to that island every day. I love the water," smiling at the scenery before them.

"I do, too. But I guess that's because growing up on Tatooine, water was sparse at best, and living on Coruscant is mostly full of steel and stone," Anakin said, feeling a light breeze touch his face.

"We would lie on the sand and let the sun dry us. . .and try to guess the name of the birds singing."

"I don't like sand that much," Anakin replied. "It's coarse, rough, and irritating and gets everywhere. But not like here," he unconsciously started tracing his fingers across her shoulder, feeling her soft and smooth skin. "It's soft and smooth here."

Padmé turned to meet her eyes with his and took a step toward him. "I'm really glad your here with me, Ani."

"Me too, Angel," leaning his head closer to her. Padmé took the chance and pressed her pink lips onto his. The kiss was soft and slowly became more passionate as Anakin started kissing her back. Padmé wrapped her arms around his neck as he wrapped his around her exposed back, bringing her closer. Their lips moved in sync, and Padmé felt light on her feet when pressed up against him. She ran her fingers through his hair, and their kiss grew more passionate.

Anakin felt like he was in heaven with Padmé. This had felt like a dream come true. Sometimes, he would imagine doing things like this with her. He didn't want to stop kissing her, but his rational mind instantly kicked in, and he realized what he was doing and pulled back. "No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that," mentally kicking himself for doing what he did. Releasing his emotions into the Force, he stepped back, though found he was unable to tear his eyes away from hers. "I, uh, better check on security around here," he headed inside.

Padmé watched as he entered the house and silently touched her fingers to her lips. They still tingled from their kiss. It was more amazing than she thought, and she felt warm inside. Anakin's lips against hers felt magical and made her feel safe and secure. Moreover, she felt his true feelings for her. She silently thanked Sola for telling her to wear this dress today.

A/N: Anakin and Padmé had finally arrived on Naboo. It's obvious that Padmé wants Anakin and that he wants her. But instead of being apprenticed to Obi-Wan, Anakin is the student of Mace Windu and, therefore, has greater control over his emotions and is more responsible. I know that it was originally Padmé who tried to deny her feelings for romance and keep her relationship with Anakin to that of just friends. But I figured that she should pursue him a little. Anakin still loves Padmé. That much is certain and will never change.

It was never explained how long Anakin and Padmé spent on Naboo, so I will use my imagination.
