Enjoy.
Danny's POV
It's the next morning and after much discussion from the realisation that there is another gate that needs closing, in the next court yard to stop the Walkers getting out, it's been decided that some of them are going in. At the moment there isn't many Walkers in there because we've managed to clear most of it but every now and again another walks through the open gate. If the Walkers catch on that we're out here then they'll all come wandering out and we'll be back to having a full courtyard. Clearing this is the only way we can get into that prison to see what's going on inside.
"The gates in that corner over there", Daryl points at where it is but you can't really see it from where we're stood. "We need to close it to stop more comin' through otherwise we're just fightin' a losin' battle. Every time we nearly empty it, it just starts fillin' back up." he pauses as a Walker catches his eye inside. "When you come across the guards with the helmets ya need to get them under the chin, ya won't get through the helmet for any other attack. Merle, Rick, Glenn and... " He looks at Maggie. "And you. We go in. Danny you go up that tower and be our back up. The rest of you need to kill those left at the fence but stay quiet. We don't want to draw the ones in the other courtyard out if we don't need to".
He looks around at everyone in turn. "Good with that".
There are a lot of nods and yes's from everyone. He swings his crossbow onto his back and pulls his knife out of it's sheath. Merle has grabbed the machete out of our car and is swinging it around rather dangerously if you ask me. Everyone else is loaded up with their desired weapons and, I think, are really raring to go. So I quickly make my way into the tower so I can get them in my sight before they go in.
The step in and then Carol shuts the gate behind them. The few Walkers at the fence line are quickly put down by the ones on fence patrol and they do manage to do it with minimal noise. The group of five form a circle which was the Sheriffs idea, it's something they've done all Winter it's how he feels comfortable so Daryl and Merle didn't have a problem with it, more of the other group went in than ours so it's only fair we compromise.
The protected guards are the ones to come for the group, there is four of them now, hopefully there isn't any more hiding somewhere else. They take them down exactly how Daryl told them to and it works a treat. They all hurry over to the wall that is beside the gate they need to close. The Sheriff pushes open a door but when nothing comes out they flatten themselves against it, trying to stay invisible.
Daryl ready's the climbing clips and rope in his hand and then Merle and the Sheriff rush forwards to kill the Walkers that have started to walk through. Daryl then rushes to close the gate, I take a shot and kill one that was trying to walk through as Daryl successfully locks the gate in place.
Maggie and Glenn are still stood by the wall when I move my sight over to them, the door the Sheriff opened earlier now has a Walker moving through it. Maggie takes a step back in a moment of shock but I don't let her recover, instead I take the shot.
Glenn turns and looks up at me and places his hand over his heart as a clear thank you. I salute him in return.
Glenn and Maggie start walking back to us once it's obvious there are no more Walkers in that courtyard but Daryl, Merle and the Sheriff don't move, in fact they now start making their way over to the door to C Block. Going by the giant C it has written on the wall I'm guessing that's what it's called.
Of course, they've planned to go in and just so happened to forget to tell us that part.
I'm gonna kill him.
I rather forcefully shoulder my rifle and make my way back to the ground. By the time I walk out into the open their little group of five has already gone inside. I'm not the only one pissed at them.
I wait, I'm not stupid, but it takes every single piece of self control I have to not open that gate and go waltzing in there.
"Sophia?" She looks round her mum to look at me. "From now, Merle doesn't get his way. You be a sassy bitch to him. I wanna make his life miserable".
She smirks. "What about Daryl?"
"The way to wind him up is to wind Merle up. You've seen it over the Winter. He hates it".
"I can do that".
I hold my hand out to the side which she immediately smacks with barely a glance at it.
"You know I'm not sure how I feel about you using my daughter in your plans".
I tilt my head to the side so I can quickly look at her before putting my eyes straight back on the door the others went through. "Carol." I shrug, "You love it".
She mmms, "Yeah... I do".
The door to C block slides open and barely half a second later I'm yanking open the gate, forcefully. Merle comes strolling out with Glenn right behind him.
"You..." Merle stops dead but he's wearing that punchable lazy smirk of his while Glenn looks pretty worried. "I am trying so hard to not strangle you right now".
"Why". Arrogant.
"Because you... you. Urgh." I screech in annoyance as I step right up to him. "You deliberately left out part of the plan. We talked about this months ago we don't lie and we don't hide things. Remember?" His smirk disappears. I think he now fully sees that I am angry and this is not some sort of joke or banter between us, this is serious.
"Hey, sorry. We made the plan between the three of us early this morning. I don't know why we didn't tell you. I'm sorry squirt".
I squint my eyes a little as I look up at him before letting my shoulders relax, "Fine, apology accepted but Sophia".
"Yeah"?
"I still stand by what I said earlier".
"I'll gladly do it".
She then walks off with the others to go inside.
Merle frowns. "What do you stand by, what'd ya say?"
"Wouldn't you like to know". I step around him and start walking towards the door.
"Yes I would, tell me".
I ignore him and once he realise I'm not gonna tell him he gives up the pestering.
Glenn falls into step beside me. "I don't want you to hate me the first day we're back together. I didn't know but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have gone in. At least we know it's definitely safe in there".
"It's fine, honestly. I don't hate you. It's just at the start of Winter the five of us promised to not lie to one another and that all plans had to be unanimous. And then you guys show up and it all gets forgotten".
Glenn grabs my arm and gets me to stop. "I'm sorry for that. Rick went all dictatorship on us. It was tough but he did get us through the Winter, we probably wouldn't all be here if it wasn't for him but let me talk to him. I want us to go back to being one group but I'll make him understand that at the moment we're two and that we both have different leaderships ways." He pauses for a second before smiling. "Also I haven't said congratulations yet. Uncle Glenn made it back just in time".
I laugh, out loud and then yank him into a hug. "My god, I've missed you".
"I missed you to. But I'm serious I'm uncle Glenn from now on".
All of the Sheriff's lot pick the cells on the bottom while us five go upstairs and take those. Daryl and I in the very end one, Sophia in the next one along and then Carol and Merle in the one next to that. I saw Carols face when she let Sophia have her own, she's nervous about it. She lets her girl do all sorts through out the day but not once these over these past eight months has Sophia slept in her own room. It's like at night Sophia goes back to being Carol's little girl.
The door to cell block C has been locked, the one on the other side of the cells is also locked. No one is getting in and I think Carol knows that which is why she allowed it but it still doesn't make it easy for her.
I drop my bag onto the floor beside Daryl's as he unrolls my bedspread onto the bottom bunk.
"Can we pull them onto the floor, I want to sleep next to you and with this". I point at the bump, "We can't fit on that bottom bunk together". He pulls on the mattress and lets it slap into the floor. "Sssh, there are people down there".
"Sorry", but he doesn't look sorry. He pulls the one down from the top bunk and this time does place it gently on the floor. I kick off my shoes and quickly lose my trouser before sliding under the covers. Before he joins me he shuts the door to the cell, he doesn't lock it though. He removes his shoes and his sheath and climbs in after me. I roll on my side as his arm goes around me so my head is resting on his shoulder.
"Merle said you got angry at him. And not in your usual way. He said you were fuckin' pissed."
"Did he say why"?
He sighs, "Yeah. I didn't keep it from you on purpose. I don't know what happened and I don't know why we didn't tell you but you have my word, from now on no matter how Rick deals with his group we don't keep things from each other. We do what we were doing before they came back. It's how it should be".
