Danny's POV.
For the rest of the day yesterday Merle, Daryl, Axel, Oscar and even Glenn dragged the bodies from D block to burn out in the field yard out front. It's still early in the morning but they want to burn the bodies as soon as possible that way the fire has chance to go out before night fall, Daryl, Merle and Glenn are out getting firewood, they aren't far as I can see them from where I stand in the field. Carol and Sophia are out here with me to help me keep an eye on Axel and Oscar, who are piling the fire wood we already have on the pile of bodies. The Sheriff is over by the front gate keeping watch while the gate is unlocked.
I stop watching the 3 men gathering wood as they finally walk back through the front gate.
"WALKERS! Look out". I spin around as Carl shouts from somewhere behind me.
I freeze for a second as I stare at the scene in front of me. There are walkers coming up behind the group from a yard that was previously locked up. But the gates open. As soon as the first bullet is fired from a gun I race forward.
"Axel, Oscar!" I pull my knife out and thrust it out to my side where Oscar snatches it from me. I yank my bat off my back and throw it in Axels direction and then with my gun in hand we rush towards the gate that's blocking us from them.
Oscar runs past me to open the gate.
"Lori", She spins her head in my direction. "Get inside!" Maggie grabs Lori's hand and pulls her towards C block door, Carl follows after them when his mums calls his name.
I shoot at some Walkers trying to clear a path for Beth and Herschel who are getting surrounded. When a path is clear they run past me through the gate we just came through.
The walkers are already thinning out but unless we shut that gate they won't stop. Who knows how many there are still inside.
"We need to shut the gate".
Oscar nods. "I got it, cover me".
I move behind a bench so there's a barrier between me and the Walkers as Oscar starts dodging through them, Axel hot on his heels. It's way too dangerous for me to follow after them like I would have done before I got pregnant so I do everything I can to make sure they get to the open gate.
Oscar shouts as a Walker grabs onto him but it isn't my bullet that puts the Walker down. Daryl, Merle, Glenn and the Sheriff have finally made it to the fight. Killing off the last few Walkers is easy. Oscar and Axel make there was back over to us as everyone starts talking at once.
I just focus on what Daryl has to say. "Are you okay?"
"I'm good" Just a little out of breath. "I think everyone's fine, Maggie took Lori and Carl back inside C block", I direct that part at the Sheriff to hopefully calm him down.
"What happened?" Daryl asks.
I shrug, "I don't know how but that gate was open".
Oscar reaches us, "Someone cut the lock". I don't miss the accusing glare the Sheriff sends Oscar and Axel, like he fully believes they did it.
The sound of alarms ringing all around us causes me to flinch, haven't heard a sound that loud in such a long time. I shoot at the one closest to me and then the guys follow suit with the others. It doesn't stop the noise overall but it gets it out of this court yard.
The Sheriff suddenly takes a step towards Oscar. "How the hell can this be happening?"
"Whoa! It has to be the back up generators."
"How do you turn those on?" Daryl asks as he side steps to try and stop the Sheriff from getting too close to Oscar.
"There's three that are connected to a diesel tank. Each one controls a certain part of the prison. They were all shut off when the prison was overrun."
"Can someone open up the main gates electronically with full power?" I wasn't expecting the Sheriffs question. I would never have thought about what the generators could actually do.
"Well, I only went in there for a few days... I guess it might be possible. Yeah".
"Come with me", the Sheriff then gestures for Glenn to follow.
Daryl puts his hand on the side of my neck, "We're goin' with him. Stay out 'ere. Keep everyone together".
"I will, be careful".
I watch them disappear and don't remove my attention until the door shuts behind them.
"We didn't do this". I slowly look at Axel.
"I believe you".
He holds out my bat for me to take but I shake my head, "keep hold of it for now until we know it's safe".
A hand grabs my hand, Carol gives it a little squeeze. "It'll be okay. I heard you say the gate was open and now the alarms does that mean what I think it means?"
Andrew is in the building. "Yes". A walker slams itself against the newly closed gate, it doesn't open but we need a new chain for it. "I'm gonna check our car for a new lock". she lets my hand go.
I open the tailgate just as someone steps up beside me. "Thank you". I look up at Herschel.
"For what".
"For saving Beth and myself".
"No worries, just because we're two separate groups doesn't mean I won't help you".
"How are you feelin'. Any problems, or changes?"
"Nothing, everything is normal".
He holds out his hand, "May I?" I place my wrist in his hand. "Seems okay, hearts beating a little fast but that's allowed given what's just happened". He lets my arm go. "Just sit down in the shade for a bit".
"Will do, thanks".
I find a spare padlock but have no luck with a chain but we can just padlock the two cut ends together. Axel volunteers to go over and do it for me.
"Where's Maggie and Lori?" Beth asks her dad.
"Rick's probably asked them to stay put just like we are".
Carol leans closer to me. "Are you okay?"
I shake my head a little. "Nobody died but I'm livid that this happened. This has to be Andrew and we let him go".
"The right decisions have been made since we met them, it's nobodies fault that he got away. They'll find him and this whole thing will be over with".
The remaining distant alarms finally turn off leaving the only noise to be coming from the Walkers surrounding the prison.
When the door to C block finally opens again I feel like I can really relax. Daryl nods once at me as Merle whispers he's dead as he walks past me to Carol.
"Where's Lori?" The Sheriff stands by the door looking around the courtyard. What?
"They haven't come out, we thought you had them inside?" Herschel says. "How's T-dog? I should go check up on him."
Before Herschel can even take a step the Sheriff puts his arm out to stop Herschel walking past him, he then shakes his head. "Walkers got into C Block".
He doesn't out rightly say that T-Dog's dead but everyone knows that's what he means.
"So where are the others?" I ask, I sent them inside thinking they could hide in C block, I thought it would be safer.
Daryl lays a hand on my shoulder. "We think they pushed back into the prison. We'll go back and look for ..."
The door creaks as it opens and through it comes a cry of a baby. When Maggie steps through holding a baby in her arms crying I know something bad happened. Carl walking past her is just the nail in the coffin. Lori didn't make it... She died giving birth to her baby. My heart starts pounding against my chest as I find it hard to catch any breath. My vision starts to blur as my head starts spinning. I call out Daryl's name but it's too late my whole body becomes numb as I drop to my knees.
Daryl's POV
"Daryl", I barely hear her as she calls my name. The sound of her voice sends a shiver down my spine. Her shoulder suddenly disappears from under my hand as she drops to the floor, I grab at her arm but it's too late as I hear the crack of her knees as she hits the concrete.
Rick is shouting behind me at the realisation of what has happened but I block him out as I try to get Danny to look at me. She's staring straight ahead, eyes are looking right at me but I know she's not seeing me. She's also breathing way too hard and fast.
"Listen to me Danny. You need to breath slower, remember what we talked about? Copy me". I grab her hand and put it against my chest but her arm remains limp and she doesn't even attempt to copy. I look around for Herschel but he looks between Danny and the baby. I nod to let him know the baby is more important.
"Keep talking to her, she needs to calm down. Get her in the shade". Herschel quickly tells me before rushing over to Maggie. Carol's shadow casts over Danny as she tries to block the sun from hitting her. There are tears streaming down Carol's face, Merle steps up beside her and hands me a bottle of water.
"Danny! Look at me... Please". I run my finger tips down the side of her face, her skin is burning. I can't imagine how she's feeling right now, nothing will ever come close.
Her eyes move like she's coming back into focus and then she's looking directly at me. "That's it, come on copy me". Her arm becomes solid as she holds it up herself, her fingers gripping my shirt. "Breath in", she does. I wait a couple of seconds, "And out".
When her breathing finally slows down enough for it to no longer be a problem her eyes become shiny and then the tears start falling.
"Daryl... She's..." Her voice trembles but before she can say any more I pull her in.
I'm convinced that when Merle and Carol came back from their scavenge trip I saw formula inside one of the bags. "Merle! They need the formula".
Merle jerks his head in a firm nod and then goes off to go find it, even he knows now is not the time to kick off about them not being part of our group. That baby needs help and we have the means to help.
I rest my chin on the top of her head, it kills me to know that there is absolutely fuck all I can say that will make this better. She's going to have to go through every emotion there is and I just have to make sure I'm here for her.
I turn my head slightly as a commotion happens behind me. People are shouting Ricks name. I turn in time to see him stalk through C blocks door, axe in hand. They've got to just let him go, there is nothing they can do to stop him. I know that I would be the exact same if something happened to the woman in my arms, the mother of my child.
