Disclaimer- I do not own the Walking dead
Enjoy.
The passenger door opening has me opening my eyes. I turn my head to the side to find Trevor standing there.
"Sorry for waking you, but Carol said. We can hear Daryl's bike".
I smile at him, "Thank you". He looks so apologetic but honestly I wasn't even sleeping. Carol had convinced me to sit down and try and get some sleep while we waited but I hadn't managed to actually fall asleep. I just rested my eyes for a bit.
I step out of the car as the engine noise gets louder then I spot him in the distance with a car following behind. Barely two minutes later he's pulling to a stop in front of our car and climbing off. I hurry over to him, he opens his arms to allow me to walk straight into them. He wraps his arm around my back and then I have to walk backwards about ten feet still attached to him as he wants to move closer to the group.
"It's been a shit show here". Merle tells his brother.
"We didn't 'ave it much better, is everyone okay 'ere".
I pull back a little so I can see Daryl. "Nobody got injured from the storm and the Walkers just walked on by."
"Good. We're gonna have to turn back around though, take a different way through. The herd is on a straight path and we won't be able to get around them".
"Already got a plan", Merle tells Daryl. I look at him over my shoulder and give him a go away look. He raises an eyebrow and then with a slight scrunch of his nose he turns around and leaves.
I lightly grip the front of Daryl's shirt, "Was everything really okay? Nothing bad happened?"
He runs his hands up my arms before resting one against my neck. "There were no problems. We found a car but when the storm hit we found a place to hide out until it was over, the herd came through but we were safe. I promise ya".
The fact that he's not got any blood on him shows that he didn't get into a major danger but I needed him to tell me.
"I hate it". I start, causing him to frown. "We go on separate runs, and yeah I always worry but I hated this. While we're out here we can't separate again. Okay?"
The hint of a smile forms on his lips as he runs his thumb against my cheek. "I won't go anywhere you don't want me to".
He then leans down and kisses me, deeply.
There's a loud whistle from behind us but Daryl doesn't pull back straight away, when he finally does I turn around. "Car's nearly packed love birds, wanna hit the road 'fore it gets dark". Merle shouts at us.
Glenn stands off to the side looking at me wearing a grin, Maggie stood by his side with her arms wrapped around one of his, like she's afraid to let him go.
He looks perfectly good but it doesn't stop me from hurrying over to him to give him a hug.
"Thank you". I say into his chest.
"No problem, easy trip although I'm gonna say it. I don't want to ride on the back of his bike anymore. It was not fun".
I step back, "Too fast?"
"Way too fast". He shudders, "thought we were gonna crash at every turn".
I chuckle, "He probably did it on purpose". Daryl and Glenn have a weird relationship. Daryl trusts Glenn to have his back but even though Glenn has Maggie and is absolutely no threat to him Daryl can get a little jealous. I don't think he's insecure. He knows me and him are it but there's some part of him that wants Glenn to always remember that. He wants to show off in front of Glenn which he'll never admit to doing.
"Yeah I know he did".
"I'm sorry", I say it with a grin because I am sorry but it's still hilarious.
"You sound it. How's everyone doing here?"
I look at everyone else. "They're good. I think everyone's anxious to just finally get to where we're going as this trip has been alot more action packed then anyone had wanted". Including myself.
"Do we have any more stops planned?" Maggie asks.
I shake my head at them both. Technically we did but after today I'm just ready to head straight to our new home. "No, We take this detour and don't stop for anything, except for fuel and rest".
"Good", Maggie trails off and stares off the way we're going, I can hear it too. Whatever vehicle is coming this way it's huge as the rumble is so deep and loud.
I run over to where everyone is gathered, catching up with Daryl. "Carol!" I shout. She immediately appears in front of me looking very worried. "Get the keys and Sophia. Get in the car and if anything goes wrong you get out of here somehow".
"Danny!" She looks mortified and I don't blame her.
"Please",I beg her. She finally nods and just manages to catch the keys that Merle suddenly throws at her. I raise my voice hoping that everyone can hear me. "Weapons out but don't raise them unless we need to. Show them we have them but we need to give them the benefit of the doubt first". The original group already knows that but the new ones we have have never done anything like this with us and I don't want them starting something that doesn't need to be started. Merle scoffs a little clearly not liking the benefit of the doubt bit, like always but I know he'll still do it.
Daryl and Merle stand point with me just behind them. Glenn stands to Daryl's left but a little bit behind him followed by Maggie. Michonne copies the stance to Merle's left and then everyone else stands about in a triangle shape that spreads out behind us. Herschel and Beth stand right at the back with Heather who seems very scared of what might happen. She had been inside Woodbury since the start and never set foot outside the walls until she came to us.
The vehicle appears and I think a few of us are shocked at what it is. It's a huge army vehicle. Its brakes make a loud squealing sound as the truck stops. For a few moments it's quiet as nobody moves and then the drivers door opens and a huge guy appears. He doesn't get out but he stands up on the edge of the car to look at us over his door.
"Ya gonna let us pass?" He says to us.
"A herd of Walkers passed through this way a couple of hours ago, ain't nowhere to go this way". Merle tells him.
"Is that so?" He looks at all of us in turn. "You guys plannin' to rob us? 'Cause I can tell ya now, I ain't givin' up anythin' without a fight".
"We don't need anythin' you have". Daryl says.
"Not sure if I should be insulted or not" The man chuckles. "What's ya name? Mine's Abraham".
Daryl's shoulders relax, I can physically see the tension leave his body. He's not worried about this man and honestly neither am I.
"Daryl!"
Abraham jumps out of the cab and lands rather heavily on the road. He slams his door shut and hooks the strap of his gun over his shoulder. The passenger door opens and out drops a woman, and I'm not gonna lie she's gorgeous. How does she look like that in this world? "That's Rosita and Eugene". At the mention of his name the guy in question climbs out of the truck a little hesitantly. He doesn't come any closer, not like the other two do. Without being rude I can easily see he isn't really the fighter of the group. "You guys look like you've seen some things and know some things, can I ask if ya headin' anywhere specific".
Merle shakes his head. "Nowhere you guys need to know, no offence". Merle smiles to make sure they know he doesn't mean it in a snarky way.
"That's fine, I get it but you are a group full of people that look like they know what they're doin' and we have a mission to finish that you might be able to help us with".
"And what's that?" Daryl asks.
"Eugene here is a Doctor and knows how to end all this shit". I snap my attention to Eugene as a couple of people behind me exclaim out loud in surprise.
"What?" I say.
Eugene nervously twists his fingers and keeps his head down. "I am a scientist and I know what caused this mess which means with my knowledge, and only my knowledge, it can be fixed".
"How?" Glenn blurts out but we all wait for the answer.
Eugene straightens his shoulders and lifts his head up. "That is classified".
"We would appreciate", Abraham says before anyone can ask any more questions, "any help from you guys in gettin' him to Washington".
They're going to Washington.
Abraham raises a hand in a sort of wait motion. "Talk about it amongst yourselves but know this. You could be a part of saving the human race".
"This is big" sasha says, "If he can actually stop all of this then we should help him get there".
Trevor shakes his head, "And if he's lying we stop our plans of getting somewhere safe and put our lives in danger for him".
"I want to believe it" Maggie starts.
"But", Glenn takes over, "it doesn't seem like he wants to talk about it so we just have to trust them when we don't even know them".
"All I know is whatever we decide to do", Carol says, "We don't split up." Pretty much everyone makes sounds of agreement.
I tip my head back with a sigh. So listening to them talk didn't help. I want to get all of us to a place we can call home and make safe. Where we can live a lot more comfortably than the prison, although that wouldn't be difficult. However, if they are telling the truth about Eugene then helping them get him to Washington would be in the best interest for everyone.
"I want this to be a group decision." I start, "I don't want this to be a decision I make for anyone but they are going the same way we are. Why don't we help them on their way, we can split off at any point if we want to".
"If they're telling the truth, being a part of it would be very beneficial to all of us", Herschel says. "It'll be a new world order".
Merle makes a little noise in the back of his throat causing every single pair of eyes to look at him. "What?"
"You scoffed," Daryl tells him.
"Did not". He argues back.
I roll my eyes. "You did. What?"
"Part of me doesn't believe him. He's refusin' to answer just a simple question".
"But you also have to think that if he went and told everyone how to do it there'd be no guarantees they'd take him to Washington." Herschel says, "They could kill him and take the idea for themselves".
Merle nods as if he'd never thought of that, and honestly I don't think any of us did. It makes sense. He has something everybody needs but he's keeping it a secret to secure his life.
"Who wants to go with them for now?" Daryl asks everyone. Every single person holds their hand up. Okay well that's sorted, we help them and decide what to do when they get where they're going.
"Alrigh'". Daryl turns back around to face the three newcomers. "We'll help, but we lead".
Abraham grins and claps his gloved hands together once. "Okay. But we don't stop the convoy for anything".
Nobody nods their heads or makes any sort of sound in confirmation. That's not something I'm gonna abide by. If people get tired then we're stopping, we'll only do it if it's safe but tiredness can kill and I'm not putting any of my people at risk just to get somewhere quicker.
