Chapter 1: Coffee Mug - Isobel and Jubal

Isobel spent the entire morning on phone calls and paperwork. Stretching her neck which was stiff from hunching down all morning, she decided to take a break. She was so exhausted and wanted to have a caffeine fix. She looked down to see her coffee cup already discarded in the trash. She had no choice but to get up.

As she reached the break room, she realized that she forgot to bring her mug with her. She was miffed and really didn't want to walk all the way back to her office. So she decided to improvise.

She went to open the drawer where she knows that some of the mugs were being kept. She spied the classic blue mug that she knew her ASAC usually uses. She picked it up and brought it to the coffeemaker. Thanks to Stuart's generous spirit after having his baby boy, freshly brewed premium coffee came out and into her chosen mug.

As she took her first sip, Jubal entered the break room and smiled at her. "Hey."

It was barely a glance so he didn't notice the subtle surprised look from Isobel. He immediately went to the mugs drawer and opened it. Confusion filled his face and Isobel knew exactly why.

Jubal glanced back at her. "Hey, did you see..." The question died in his mouth when he zeroed in on the coffee mug she's currently holding to her lips. He narrowed his eyes. "Isobel Castille, would that be my mug that you're using?"

She finished her sip and confidently shrugged. "No, this is mine."

Her poised response made him hesitate. "The one I have looks just like that." Jubal glanced back at the drawer. His blue mug with the bureau logo was still missing. His agent mode on, thoughts swirled in his mind. Could she have a similar mug? Who could have taken his mug? One of the analysts? Kelly, maybe? Or maybe he left it in his office...

He looked back at Isobel and saw the little upward curve of her lips. Crossing his arms, he knew for sure that she's messing with him. He asked, "Are you sure about that?" while walking ever so slowly towards her.

With her eyes looking down on her coffee, "Uh-hmm..." was her only response.

Jubal can see her stiffen a bit. He stopped in front of her which forced her to look directly at him. It was like a Mexican standoff. Not one of them wanted to budge. He reached out to take the mug from her hand. "Hey," she protested. He held it by the handle and that's when he felt it. He smiled triumphantly at her.

"You know, I hit my mug on the counter when I was putting it away a few days ago." He turned to show her a little chip on the handle.

Giving him a coy smile, Isobel responded, "Excellent analysis, Agent Valentine." She grasped the mug back to her and walked towards the door. Before she fully exited the room, she turned and said with a wink, "But this is mine now."

Not really quite believing what happened, Jubal stood there dumbfounded before chuckling to himself.

The next day, a white cardboard box was at his desk with a note: Hope this makes us even. Jubal opened it to find a similar mug to the one he had. He somehow knew that it was hers.
