Book I: Water

Chapter I: An Avatar Stranded

Katara watched in pure amusement as her brother laboriously picked away at a fish. "Having a bit of trouble?"

Sokka turned to her glaring. "Hey. For your information…hunting is very meticulous. I have to have full concentration at all times."

Katara smirked at him. "Sure. Sure you do."

Sokka grunted, ignoring his sister's rather teasing glance. "Ah to heck with it. You girls wouldn't understand."

Katara suddenly felt herself get angry "Excuse me!"

Sokka then waved her off without another word while sticking the tip of his spear into a dead fish. "You heard me."

Katara felt her temper flare. "In case you need a reminder…I'm the one who can bend! I'm the one who washes your dirty underwear! I'm the one who helps to wash the underwear of all the villagers! Me and the other women! You will pay me some respect!" She then threw her hands backwards, causing the waves to crash around their small boat. The young girl was now getting so worked up that the waves were almost overwhelming the small boat they were in.

Sokka backed away in fear. "Katara! You need to calm down!"

The young waterbender, however, wasn't having it. "No! I'm done! From now on…you are on your own!" She then sent one final wave causing the iceberg behind her to begin to crack open and rumble. This finally drew her attention. She let out a small gasp. "Oh no! Did I do that?"

Sokka got up to his feet, sarcastically quipping, "Yup. Congratulations."

As the iceberg continued to crack open…the two Water Tribe siblings noticed two bodies slipping out of it.

One was of a young boy. He looked to be about fourteen years old. He had shaggy, black hair that covered half his face and was clad in what looked like a Fire Nation robe that was ripped and torn in several places. It was evident that he had been clothed in the outfit for some time as he was barefoot.

The other was of a young woman probably in her twenties. She was dressed in a Fire Nation kimono that had been torn in a couple of places. She had long black hair that flew down to her shoulders. He opened his eyes a little but was too weak to stand or talk and merely lurched forward into unconsciousness, his body rolling until it landed at the feet of the two siblings.

The woman followed suit.

Sokka, noting the torn state of the boy's Fire Nation clothes, instantly went into attack mode. He turned to his sister with a side grin. "I should get you riled up more often sis. You just caught us two more ashmaker spies."

Before Katara could even register the compliment, Sokka had already pulled his small knife, grabbed Kuzon by the scuff of his collar and pinned him against the wall.

Katara, meanwhile, looked a bit unsure. Granted…she knew that Fire Nationals were the enemy. Usually, she'd agree with her brother on this. However, she found something rather fishy about this whole situation. I don't know about this. If this kid were a Fire Nation spy, I highly doubt he'd be hiding in an iceberg of all places. Firebenders need to stay warm in order to properly maintain their flames. Not to mention there would be a ship or two to back him up in case he got exposed as a spy. Something isn't right here.

Kuzon slowly started to come to, slowly opening his eyes. "I don't…" That was when he noticed Sokka with the blade to his throat. His voice came out with pure fear. "N-No! Let me go! Please! I-I have to find her!"

Sokka's gaze darkened and he moved the blade closer to Kuzon's neck. "Find who?"

Kuzon blinked again. "M-My mother. She fled the Palace City with me" The mention of his mother suddenly got Katara's attention. "I'm sorry. You are looking for your mother?"

He turned to her nodding, "Yes...Rovi was hurt when we attempted to flee the Palace City. Father asked Mother to accompany me to safety. I tried to fly away from Fire Lord Sozin's ships but he got a lucky hit on our balloon. Downed us in…" He then turned around in shock. "Wait..where am I?"

Sokka shook his head. "You my dear friend…are in the Southern Water Tribe. I think you were stuck in that iceberg for a long time. Sozin died a long time ago. His grandson Ozai is Fire Lord now."

The realization hit Kuzon like a ton of mudbricks. "No! I can't have been gone that long! I remember everything clearly! Sozin's soldiers…invaded our home. Father and Grandfather told Mother and I to run away for our own safety!" He then sighed and shook his head. "What year is it?"

Katara raised a questioning eyebrow. "19 AG."

Kuzon then turned to her and went silent. "I don't believe it. I've been gone a hundred years." He then looked directly at Sokka. "Look you need to let me go. I need to find her."

Sokka darkly chuckled. "Yeah. I'll do that…not. You are a Fire National. You people are conniving liars. The only place you are going to is a nice little place in the sky."

Kuzon just glared. "I told you I don't have time!" It was then that Li began coughing.

Kuzon, brought to action by her cough, then gave Sokka a rough knee in the gut. "I told you to let me go!"

Sokka was then forced to let go of the firebender.

Not wasting time, Kuzon rushed to his mother's side and took one of her hands into his own. "It's okay Mother! I'm here now! I've got you!"

Li slowly opened her eyes. When she saw her son's eyes, she faintly smiled. "Kuzon. I feared the worst."

Katara watched on with great interest. Those two are mother and son.

Li then let out a another cough. "My boy…I fear I do not have much longer. You must go on without me."

Kuzon blinked at her. "You..cannot be serious. We're a family. We're in this together. We'll make it through this. We'll make it through and then we'll find Father and Grandfather. Stay with me."

Li Sho smiled. She then caressed her son's face with a hand. "You are loyal and of a good heart my child. It warms my heart to hear such devotion but..time is not on my side." She then reached into a pocket and pulled out a black pai sho tile with dark red lettering on both sides. She forced it into her son's hand. "Take this and remember me. Remember your father and Grandfather. Fulfill your destiny. Redeem the honor of our beloved Nation."

Kuzon's eyes then began to water. "Wait…No..Don't do this to me. I'll get us home. Don't leave me."

Li smiled and kissed him on the forehead. "We…shall be with you…always."

The woman then went limp in her son's arms.

Kuzon, visibly shaken up at this point, began to shake her. "Mother! Mother! Don't leave me! You can't…" The buildup of emotion soon became too much for the young Avatar and he began loudly sobbing into his hands. Then he stopped. The combination of his mother's demise and the frostbite took ahold. He then collapsed to the ground shaking uncontrollably.

Katara's eyes widened. "He's suffering from frostbite!" She rushed over to him.

Sokka just blinked and nodded. "Well…this was unexpected. I still say we kill him."

Katara, however, turned to him scowling. "Sokka! What is wrong with you! He's freezing to death. He just lost his mother and you want to throw him in a jail cell!"

Sokka turned to her shrugging. "Dead mother or no dead mother…He's still Fire Nation. We can't trust him."

Katara shook her head glaring. "I can't believe you! We are not doing anything of the sort! He's been through enough!"

Sokka grunted. "Sis. He's Fire Nation. I can't just let him live. He may hurt you. He may hurt the Tribe."

Katara spoke with bitterness in her tone. "Well then…you can head on up to the village while I carry him. I'm not letting you kill him."

Sokka felt his jaw drop. "Sis…we are at war. Be reasonable here. We can't take any chances."

Katara then turned to her brother with the coldest look he had ever seen. "Perhaps you can't but I can. I'm not letting this war change who I am." She then picked up Kuzon in her arms cradle style. "You carry the woman. We will tend to her wounds."

Sokka protested. "Katara…"

Katara then turned to him. "Do it now Sokka!"

Sokka sighed in irritation but did as his sister asked. "Fine!" He then carried the woman in his arms.

The two of them then walked towards Taqqaq Village.

Moments later

Kuzon slowly rose of out of the fur bed. Starting to look around, he realized that he was in a fur tent of some kind. About four other beds were in the same tent. He then turned to his left and saw his mother resting the bed beside him. Good. She's okay but..none of this is familiar. What am I doing here?

Then an unfamiliar female voice woke him up.

Katara then hugged him. "Oh good! You woke up! I was getting worried!"

Kuzon blinked before taking in the situation. He then pushed her away from him.

Katara could see that there was a look of fear in his eyes. "Who are you? Where am I?"

Katara put her hands up in surrender in an attempt to ease his worries. "Easy there! Easy! I'm not your enemy!"

Kuzon said nothing and merely wrapped the fur blanket around himself protectively as if to defend himself from her. He was shaking all over and not looking her in the eye, preferring to to stare at his bedding.

Katara sighed to herself. He's probably scared. Traumatized. I can't say I blame him.

Kuzon spoke with quivering fear in his tone. "P-Please don't hurt me! Please!"

Katara smiled and rather embarrassingly, let out a small laugh. "At ease. I've already told you. I'm not your enemy. I am not here to harm you." She then spread her arms wide and pulled out her pockets. "See? No weapons. Think I can get you to calm down now?"

Kuzon said nothing and just nodded. Katara smiled brightly at him. "Okay. Non-verbal communication. I can work with that." She then moved the tray of hot chocolate in front of them.

Kuzon stared at her suspiciously and then did so at the cups of steaming hot liquid. "What is this? Some attempt to poison me?"

Katara smiled with a giggle. "No. I'm not trying to poison you. It's just hot chocolate. A Southern Water Tribe specialty. I promise you. It's not poisoned." She then sighed and rolled her eyes. "Look. I'll show you." She then took one of the cups, brought it to her lips, and took a sip. She took note of the firebender's eyes watching her as she did. She then sat it back down. "See? It's safe. Come on. You're still suffering from frostbite. You will really need all the warmth you can get."

Kuzon eyed her pensively and then stared at his own cup for a while. He could still feel the chills in his body. M-Maybe just one. Reaching out, he nervously grabbed the other cup, afraid the liquid inside was going to burn him. He then brought it gently to his lips and managed to take a small sip. The liquid felt warm in his throat. He quite liked the sensation of it. All of the years of proper etiquette then kicked in and he bowed his head low to her. "Thank you."

Katara blinked and gave him a small smile. "You are welcome. I..figured spending all that time in that iceberg would make you thirsty. It is solid ice after all."

The mention of the iceberg suddenly jogged Kuzon's memory. The memory of his home on fire, the memory of his father's corpse and his mother's last words rang in his mind. He then looked Katara in the eyes again, eyes wide looking for answers. "My..mother. Is she really…"

Katara's smile soon turned into a sad one. "I'm afraid so. I'm honestly the only one who can heal wounds or treatments in this village. I tried to do all I could for her. I'm sorry. "

Kuzon blinked, tears falling from his eyes. "This is all my fault. I never should have ran. I should have just…I should have just…"

Katara then put a hand on his shoulder in order to calm him. "Hey. Easy. Let's take a couple of deep breaths. In and out."

Kuzon did as she asked. "Okay. I'm breathing."

Katara smiled. "Good." She then smiled. "How about we start by saying our names? My name is Katara." She then pointed to Sokka who was currently leaning against the tarp with crossed arms, glaring at the firebender. "The bonehead behind me is my older brother Sokka. You are in Taqqaq Village. Our village." Sokka then scowled. "Yeah..and if you know what is good for you…you will watch your step. You are on our shores now."

Kuzon then glared daggers at Sokka and opened his mouth to retort but Katara beat him to it. "Sokka! Do I need to freeze you solid again?"

Sokka shivered a bit. The thought of his sister freezing him solid again filled him with dread. He knew what she was capable of . He then let out a long sigh. "No. I'll stay quiet."

Katara gave him a nod. "Yes. You will." She then turned to Kuzon with a warm smile. "Don't mind my brother. He won't hurt you on my watch." She the clasped her hands together. "Now..your name?"

Kuzon shot Sokka one last glare before glancing at her. "My name is Kuzon. Kuzon Lin Sho." Katara smiled. "It's good to meet you…Kuzon. What are you doing in our village? We don't get many Fire Nationals in our village much anymore. Not since our dad went off to fight the war."

Kuzon blinked at the mention of the Hundred Years War. It still shocked him that so much time had passed him by. He then sighed. "I was born in the Fire Nation over a hundred years ago. All I remember is that one day…Fire Nation troops broke into our home in the Palace City. My grandfather and father told me that I was in danger. Something about me being the Avatar. I didn't understand it at the time. Next thing I know…My mother was dragging onto the airship. We flew…and flew…until our balloon was hit by the Fire Navy. We then sunk into the ocean below."

He then grunted as he shook his head.

"That's…all I remember."

Sokka blinked. "You've got to be kidding me. So you are telling us that the Fire Nation tried to hunt you and your family down because you are the Avatar? And that your balloon just washed up near our village in an iceberg?" Seems way too coincidental. Why would the Fire Lord attempt to kill one of his own?"

Kuzon grunted at him. "I don't know! I just know he did! I saw their bodies!"

Sokka growled. "I think there is something you aren't telling us! You are holding back somehow!"

Kuzon scoffed. "I'm sorry! Maybe I need to clarify…I was chased out of my home by Fire Nation soldiers! My family is dead! Is my mother's corpse not enough proof for you?" He then began shaking and shivering all over, staring down at the bedding again.

Katara growled. "Sokka! Enough!"

Sokka sighed.

Katara then smiled and took Kuzon's hands into her own. "Hey. Eyes on me. Ignore my idiot brother. You have nothing to fear here. Especially now since I know the truth. You are an honored guest. Thank you for being honest with me…Kuzon." She then poured him some more hot chocolate. "Warm up and rest for now. We shall talk again in the morning."

Kuzon just nodded. "T...Thank you."

Katara then stood up. "Sokka…let's go."

Sokka protested, "Now hold on a minute. You can't honestly be thinking of leaving him in here all alone."

Katara then sighed before turning to him. "Yes. That is exactly what I am saying. Let's go."

Sokka let out a long sigh before turning to Kuzon with a harsh glare while following his sister out of the tent. He returned the favor with his own. What is his deal with me?

Katara then turned to smile at Kuzon. "Rest well Kuzon. Breakfast will be ready in the morning. I hope you like seal jerky." She then walked out of the tent.

Kuzon blinked at her as she walked out. He then laid back on the bedding pulling the covers over him. She's an interesting one.
