Chapter 2: Be Nice - Maggie and OA
The office was almost deserted with most of their team already left for the night. Maggie and OA decided to finish their paperwork when he made a deep sigh. His partner scrunched up her face. "Why are you doing that?"
"Huh?"
Maggie rolled her eyes. "You almost used up all the air in the room with all your deep breaths and sighs."
"Wow, you're keeping track of my breathing," OA stared at his partner and leaned back. "That's creepy, Maggie."
She responded with her eyes still staring at her computer screen. "That's because you've been doing it for the last fifteen minutes or so."
OA leaned to whisper in her ear. "Didn't know my breathing bothered you so much."
She shoved him in the shoulder. "I'm trying to be a good partner here and this is how you repay me."
"I don't know what you're talking about," he said casually but he kept playing with his ring.
Looking pointedly at his hands, Maggie knew about his nervous habit. "Look, it's cool if you don't want to talk about..." She turned back to her paperwork.
"It's Amira."
She looked back at OA. "Why, what happened?"
He shrugged. "Nothing..." When he saw her scowl, he continued, "It's just she wanted to have dinner this weekend."
"So?"
He exhaled. "She's bringing this guy who she said she's," he paused to make air quotes, "kinda dating for a while now."
Maggie smiled. "Good for you, you finally learned how to do," she imitated his hand gestures "... this."
"Ha, ha, very funny."
"Surely, this isn't the first time Amira introduced some guy." She leaned back on her chair to look at her partner.
OA had a thoughtful look on his face. "No, but usually it's just a casual mention about some random guy. And if he happens to be there, that's when she'll introduce him." He shook his head. "It was never a scheduled dinner just to meet the guy."
"Maybe she's really serious about this guy." She tried to make it sound like it was not a big deal but it's obvious from her partner's face that was not how he saw it. She tried again. "It's just dinner. You could handle that."
An uncertain look crossed his face. "I'm not so sure."
She placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Just be yourself. Be your nice, charming self."
"Really?" OA glared at her. "Being myself around whoever that guy is and being nice to him are two different things."
Maggie narrowed her eyes at him. "You have to be nice to this guy. He might be someone important to your sister. Compliment him, say something nice."
"That's your great advice?"
She leaned back on her chair and smirked as a thought occurred to her. "Do you want me to tell you instead how my brothers deal with the guys me and my sister dated?"
OA nodded. "That might be a good idea, yes."
"Definitely not." She laughed. "I don't want Amira to hate me." She glanced at her desk. There's no use pretending that their report is going to be finished tonight. "You know what, let's just grab some dinner."
"Sure, then maybe you could tell me how your brothers tortured your dates."
"Stop it." They turned off their computers and gathered their stuff.
As they were walking to the elevators, OA remarked, "Oh, I'm sorry, not tortured, I meant interrogated your dates." Their laughter was heard from the hallway.
