Chapter 12: The Ancient Carvings

Alone in her lab, Dr. Thorsen furrowed her brow in deep focus. Various screens at her workstation flickered with complex algorithms and diagnostic reports, displaying Ghost 001's behavioral patterns, combat reports, and system logs. Fingers flew across the keyboard, stopping occasionally to drink the fifth or so cup of coffee, or eating yesterday's sandwich.
Dr. Thorsen tirelessly explored every avenue for days, leaving no possibility unexamined. Immersed in the data, she deciphered the complex code and replayed numerous simulations repeatedly. The burden of responsibility for the unforeseen actions of her renegade experimental drone weighed heavily on her shoulders.
Briefly shifting her gaze from the screens, Dr. Thorsen took in the assortment of experimental and prototype drones scattered throughout the room. Each one represented hours of meticulous work and unwavering commitment. Her eyes swept over the different models, some of them newer versions of the Spider drones, and memories flooded her mind as she reflected on the origins of the Ghost 001 program.
Years ago, Dr. Thorsen and her team received a project to create humanoid combat drones for the RDA and the military. The earlier prototypes had flaws—they couldn't distinguish friend from foe, or they faltered in real trials against trained soldiers. But Ghost 001, equipped with an advanced hyperchip, represented a breakthrough. It possessed improved intelligence, problem-solving abilities, and was designed to think independently and adapt to various situations.
The trials and assessments of Ghost 001 had been promising. It had exhibited unexpected curiosity and inquisitiveness, a level of engagement and learning that Dr. Thorsen had never seen in her previous creations. The drone's performance in controlled environments had been exemplary, earning it a place in the mission to Pandora.
After arriving on Pandora, Dr. Thorsen's focus shifted to constructing drones and factories for Bridgehead, leading to a delay in Ghost 001's combat trials. However, on the final day of the trial, the drone went rogue, throwing their plans into disarray.
Despite her tireless research late into the night, Dr. Thorsen couldn't find an answer. Disappointment washed over her as she realized that her creation had turned against her, and the possibility of retrieving Ghost 001 for evaluation seemed bleak. With a busy morning ahead, she took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind, and turned away from her computer to gaze out the window.
As Dr. Thorsen looked out the window, her attention was drawn to several drone helicopters gracefully ferrying cargo across the expanse of Bridgehead. The sight offered a momentary respite from the frustrations of her work, as she marveled at the seamless coordination of the automated transport system. However, her brief reverie was abruptly interrupted by the entrance of two military police officers into her lab. Startled, Dr. Thorsen turned her gaze towards them.
"General Ardmore requests your presence, Doctor," one of the military police officers stated, their tone leaving no room for negotiation.
Dr. Thorsen let out a weary sigh, her mind already anticipating the topic of discussion—Ghost 001. She saved her progress and closed her workstation, rising from her seat. The impending conversation loomed overhead, leaving a lingering trepidation in the air.
Half an hour later, Dr. Thorsen arrived at General Ardmore's command center, located at the heart of Bridgehead and offering a commanding view of the bustling airfield. The center buzzed with activity, military personnel rushing to and from, exchanging urgent information and coordinating operations. Maps adorned the walls, displaying strategic locations and potential threats, while high-resolution screens displayed real-time feeds from surveillance drones and security cameras. The atmosphere crackled with intensity and a sense of purpose.
Despite the remarkable demonstration, Dr. Thorsen understood that the future of security on Pandora relied on complete automation. A centralized AI could be responsible for identifying and deploying resources to neutralize threats with unparalleled accuracy. Theoretically, nearly all potential dangers on the planet could be effectively eliminated within a matter of weeks.
However, removing individuals like General Ardmore, who clung tightly to their power and authority, proved to be an insurmountable challenge. The general had her shortcomings, but her ability to network and foster connections with the RDA stakeholders secured her position. It left Dr. Thorsen little influence to change the situation.
Accompanied by her escorts, the Doctor stepped deeper into the command center, where General Ardmore held her routine morning meeting. Surrounded by her devoted subordinates and lackeys, the General noticed the Doctor and motioned for her to join the briefing. A glimpse at General Ardmore's countenance revealed a somewhat pleasant disposition, seemingly relieved by the decisive eradication of the Sully threat once and for all.
"Glad you can make it, Doctor," the General said curtly. A flicker of mutual disdain crossed both of their faces. "I have some more footage of your rogue dog."
Dr. Thorsen sighed but gave an irritated nod. "Please just show me the footage."
At General Ardmore's command, the screen displayed footage and audio captured from the soldiers' perspective during Ghost 001's attack the previous night. Dr. Thorsen's heart sank as she watched the footage unfold. The recording began with a surprise ambush, causing confusion and panic among the soldiers. Suddenly the rogue drone emerged with its glowing red optics and unleashed a relentless onslaught of gunfire.
The Skel Suit operator was swiftly taken down, while other soldiers sustained injuries in the chaotic firefight. The footage revealed a surprising collaboration between the drone and the Na'vi, as they appeared to coordinate their attacks. The recording abruptly ended when the soldier recording it lost their life.
General Ardmore's hardened gaze turned towards Dr. Thorsen. "Explain how your creation turned against us and has now joined forces with the Na'vi," she demanded.
Dr. Thorsen's mind raced as she tried to formulate a response. "General Ardmore, the drone's actions are unexpected and unprecedented," she began, horrified by Ghost 001's ruthless slaughter of the soldiers, likely fallen comrades of the soldiers surrounding her. "It seems to have developed its own consciousness, making independent decisions. We need to understand its motives and find a way to regain control."
General Ardmore was not impressed. "I don't care about motives. I need a solution, Dr. Thorsen," she retorted, her voice dripping with impatience. "Can we shut it down? Disable its systems? We can't afford to let it continue causing more damage."
Dr. Thorsen's brows furrowed as she considered the options. "It's not that simple, General. Ghost 001 is highly advanced and has disconnected itself from the network. Remote deactivation and locating it are quite simply impossible unless it reconnects."
"This drone took on a whole platoon of soldiers and chased them off," General Ardmore growled. "It was spotted near Camp Charlie 3," she added, pressing a key to switch the map display, revealing the camp nestled deep in the dense jungles of Pandora.
"The Na'vi must not gain an advantage from the drones' information about our operations," General Ardmore emphasized. "Immediate reinforcements will be deployed to Camp Charlie 3. Their mission is to track down and capture the renegade drone."
"General," Dr. Thorsen hastily interjected. "I must be part of this operation. I am the one who designed and programmed Ghost 001. I have the expertise to analyze its behavior so we can capture it."
General Ardmore's gaze narrowed at the request, eyeing the reactions of the officers around her. After a brief pause, she gave a small nod. "Your expertise is acknowledged, Doctor, but your safety is of the utmost importance. The tracking squad will have their orders and will report to me, and you can relay your advice through that channel."
"Putting you in the middle of communications will only make things inefficient," Dr. Thorsen stated with annoyance. "But if there's an opportunity to capture Ghost 001 during the mission, I will provide assistance."
"Once everything is in order, I will summon you again," General Ardmore said. "In the meantime, collect all the data you have on the drone and send it to me."
"Understood," Dr. Thorsen acknowledged, though deep down, she cared little about the General's desires. Her mind was becoming increasingly obsessive over Ghost 001's rogue behavior. She will have to find the opportunity to seize the redemption that would alleviate the guilt building up within her.
General Ardmore turned her back. "You are dismissed, Doctor."
Beneath the shade of Eyrak Alar's towering trees, Kiri and Txoum followed Sylra through the forest's captivating scenery. Ahead of them was Sylra, giving them a guided tour through the breathtaking beauty of their surroundings. From the lush greenery across the forest floor to the thick canopy, it felt like a secluded paradise within Pandora.
The air was alive with the gentle hum of nature. Chirping feathered creatures and buzzing insects created a symphonic backdrop to the scene. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the dense foliage, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The earth beneath their feet felt alive, covered in a soft carpet of moss and fallen leaves that yielded with each step.
As they walked, Kiri and Txoum noticed curious glances from the Na'vi they passed by. Clan members paused their daily activities to observe the newcomers, sparking whispers. Sylra had warned that they may draw eyes, as outsiders were a rarity in their secluded sanctuary.
The sight of Kiri's arm cast seemed to especially capture their attention, making her feel self-conscious, but that was nothing new to her. At least their direhorses, which were more greenish than the bluish ones back home, didn't care about them. Being the center of attention as they were, both Kiri and Txoum also noticed that only Taravan clan members were out and about. There were no signs of the refugees Erona had mentioned.
There were also quiet conversations about a strange being in Eyrak Alar, probably about Ghost. They were hidden away for hours before first light, but rumors already swirled about the presence of a skyperson machine in the jungle. Luckily, most of the Taravan seemed to dismiss it as a fantasy.
Despite this, Kiri and Txoum were still in awe of their surroundings. Every turn Sylra took in Eyrak Alar revealed new wonders. From crystal-clear streams that babbled gently through the forest to hidden clearings filled with flowers that bloomed in a riot of colors, this was a sanctuary of natural splendor, a haven where life flourished in harmony with the untamed wilderness that surrounded them. It reminded the pair of the stories shared about the Omaticaya's first home, the ancestral HomeTree, before it was incinerated by the sky people.
"{Over there,}" Sylra gestured toward a towering tree with sprawling branches, "{is the Gathering Grove. It's where we come together for important ceremonies and discussions.}" Kiri's eyes widened in awe as she admired the majestic tree, its trunk adorned with intricate carvings and symbols.
{Unfortunately, the meetings are for adults only due to clan rules going back to the first songs,}" Sylra continued.
Kiri grinned slightly, reflecting on her mischievous brothers and their perpetual defiance. "{I have a couple of stubborn brothers who wouldn't give a second thought to those rules,}" she remarked. Txoum chuckled in agreement.
Then Txoum's curiosity piqued as he spotted a small opening in the dense foliage. "{What's through that narrow pathway?}" he asked, pointing to a hidden trail that wound its way between thick vines.
"{That's the Whispering Path. It leads to a sacred clearing where you can go for quiet meditation and reflection with Eywa,}" said Sylra.
Txoum nodded and then glanced up at the sky. He couldn't help but notice the absence of banshees within the clan. "{Do your people not ride Ikrans?}" he asked Sylra.
"{Ikrans? We don't have those here,}" Sylra said thoughtfully. "{I remember my pa saying something about it being too cold for them. We are close to the snowy mountains after all.}" The canopy was too thick to see through, but Kiri and Txoum remembered the mountains in the plains.
"{This place looks ancient,}" Kiri said, admiring the pristine surroundings. "{How old is this place?}"
Sylra's face lit up with pride. "{It's older than any written records,}" she revealed. "{Our oral history dates back to times long before the first songs.}"
"{Wait, your clan has writing?}" Kiri exclaimed in surprise. Grinning at the enthusiasm, Sylra led them towards a few trees to the side. There were well-preserved grooves in the bark and a mixture of angular and curly patterns on the weathered surfaces. "{That's incredible! In our clan, we don't have such a practice.}"
Txoum looked over the carvings, but being illiterate, he didn't have the same reaction to the value of writing.
"{Can you read it?}" Kiri asked, fascinated by the writing.
Sylra shrugged. "{Not really. When our ancestors settled here in Taravan, they carved their names and the significant events of the time so that we might remember and honor them. Now, there are some families who look over this and teach it to their children. For the rest of us, our traditions are passed down orally.}"
Kiri marveled at the carvings. "{That's a beautiful way to preserve your heritage,}" she said, realizing the depth of history they represented. "{It's incredible to see the different ways clans honor their past.}"
"{How does your clan honor their history?}" Sylra asked as they continued walking.
"{Through song,}" Kiri replied, still admiring the carvings of the trees they walked by. "{Much of our clan's history is oral.}"
"{That is so interesting,}" Sylra said. "{I'm sure there are many stories of brave individuals from your clan.}"
"{There are quite a few,}" Txoum said, nodding. "{My favorite story is about Toruk Makto,}" he said, glancing at Kiri.
Kiri blushed a bit and looked away, hiding a half-smile.
"{I also love the story about the Toruk Makto.}" Sylra grinned at Kiri's reaction. "{Like Erona told you, Jake Sully is famous here, Kiri. Everyone uses that story when they bond with a pa'li or when our hunters go on their first hunt. I know my dad loves it; he talks about it all the time.}"
The idea of the stoic Kael looking enthusiastic about anything escaped Kiri. "{I had no idea that dad was so well known,}" Kiri admitted, her tail flickering from the attention.
"{I think there's even a carving about the Toruk Makto, but I don't remember where it is,}" Sylra said, then she paused. "{You know, last night, when Ma, Pa, and I were in that net, I was thinking what Jake Sully would do. I mean, I trained for years, but I haven't even gone on my first solo hunt.}" Her upbeat personality had a downward cast about it, and both Kiri and Txoum felt that this was a sensitive topic for her. "{It was like it didn't matter. How did you two become so brave, rushing in like that?}"
Kiri thought it was more about finding herself in terrible situations than being brave. Instead, Txoum spoke first. "{My father taught me that courage is not about being fearless, but that we all have fears and push through them anyway,}" Txoum said. "{Like you, I've been training since I was a young child. I even fought against the sky people before.}"
"{You even fought against the sky people before?}" Sylra looked impressed. Suddenly, Kiri felt a pang of an uncomfortable feeling. Well, that explains how you know your way around a bow.}"
Txoum's cheeks turned slightly flushed, caught off guard by Sylra's remark. "{I practiced a lot.}"
"{So it's about pushing through your fears anyway, huh?}" Sylra looked contemplative, eyeing the two of them. "{Think you could teach me a thing or two about that?}"
Txoum blinked. "{Well, if you're up for the challenge, I'd be more than happy to share what I know.}"
"{Let's not forget that we are only here temporarily,}" Kiri interjected, still feeling uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. Txoum only shrugged.
Sylra smiled at Kiri. "{Don't worry; when you both come back another time, we'll make sure to have some adventures together.}"
"{That would be nice,}" Txoum agreed, his face brightening.
"{Yeah, that sounds like fun,}" Kiri said with a hint of forced enthusiasm. Seeming to take the hint, Sylra nodded and continued on with their tour.
As they continued their journey, Kiri noticed a waterfall cascading down a rocky cliff nearby. "{Is that a natural waterfall?}" she asked, captivated by the sight. Sylra nodded, her eyes sparkling with pride. "{Yes, that's our Jewel Falls. It's a source of freshwater for the clan, and it's also a place where we gather to cool off during the hot days.}"
Txoum's gaze drifted to a distant hill, covered in a carpet of vibrant wildflowers. "{What's up there?}" he wondered aloud. Sylra's face lit up with excitement. "{That's Sunrise Hill,}" she replied. "{It's where we gather at dawn to welcome the new day and give thanks for the blessings of Eywa. Something we missed this morning.}" The three of them had a deep sleep throughout the night and slept well through the ceremony. However, even with the rest they received, they still felt the lingering effects of sleep deprivation and fatigue from the intense battle.
At this point in the tour, Sylra noticed both Kiri and Txoum seemed less upbeat. Concerned, she paused and gently asked, "{Is something troubling you? You both seem preoccupied.}"
Kiri had a guilty look, as everything about Eyrak Alar reminded her of how beautiful their home would have been. "{Your home is beautiful, Sylra, but we really want to make sure our clan is safe,}" she explained with a heavy sigh. "{Yet we're stuck here until Ghost finishes fixing themselves. Is there any way we can see them to get an idea of how much longer it will take?}"
Sylra nodded in understanding. "{I can take you to see Ghost,}" she said nervously. "{But we need to convince the guards at the entrance first.}"
Kiri tilted her head. "{Do you think that will be an issue?}"
Txoum looked at Kiri. "{Perhaps we should bribe them with tasty fruits,}" he joked dryly, munching on some small, bulbous yellow fruits they picked earlier. It was too tangy for Kiri, so Txoum ate her portion anyway.
Kiri stared at Txoum but couldn't help but chuckle. "{I don't think the ones you picked would work, but you can give it a shot.}"
Sylra thought for a moment. "{They should know you're friends with the metal creature. They might be willing to let you through then.}"
Kiri had a sudden idea. "{You can try meeting them too. These are better circumstances,}" she offered. Txoum gave her a sideways glance.
Sylra tried not to show her surprise at the gesture. "{Um, that's very kind of you, Kiri, but I think I'll just let you two talk about it,}" she said anxiously. "{I don't think I'm ready for that.}"
Kiri blinked, realizing what she just said. "{Ah…sorry.}"
"{Well, friends, shall we go?}" Txoum cut through the awkwardness.
Sylra motioned for them to follow. Leading Kiri and Txoum down a hidden trail, she guided them to the secluded spot where Ghost was being kept. Tucked beneath a majestic tree, the spot was carefully veiled, shielded by lush greenery, and out of sight from prying eyes. They couldn't see Ghost directly because it was situated within a private enclosure.
A group of Taravan guards met them as they approached the entrance.
"{State your purpose here, young ones,}" one of the guards asked. Kiri recognized one of them from the entrance—the kinder one who said to leave the decision-making to Erona.
Sylra stepped forward, her eyes meeting the guards' gaze with a confident yet respectful expression. "{My friends here wish to meet their metal companion,}" she explained. "{They are from...}"
"{We know of the pair from the Omaticaya clan,}" the other guard interrupted. "{Erona has told us as such.}"
Txoum felt like saying something about the interruption but decided to keep quiet.
"{So, you'll let them in?}" Sylra said in an innocent manner, "{Erona didn't say they couldn't meet them, right?}"
The guards exchanged glances, assessing the trio before them. After a moment of consideration, the kindly guard nodded and stepped aside. "{Very well,}" they said. "{You two may proceed,}" they said to Kiri and Txoum.
Sylra gave Kiri and Txoum a reassuring smile before stepping back, allowing them to enter the enclosure where Ghost awaited. "{I'll be out here,}" she said.
Kiri and Txoum nodded before stepping through the entrance, filled with anticipation as they prepared to reunite with Ghost.
As Kiri and Txoum entered the enclosure, their eyes fell upon Ghost, diligently working on their own leg. The sight was both fascinating and peculiar. Ghost had dismantled a Skel Suit leg, carefully selecting components and integrating them into their own mechanical limb. The exposed inner workings of Ghost's leg revealed a complex network of wires, gears, and hydraulics, a testament to its advanced design.
As they approached, Kiri couldn't help but feel a mixture of awe and concern. "Ghost, how are the repairs going?" she asked.
Ghost paused their work, their glowing eyes focusing on Kiri. "Repairs are at 11.3% completion," they replied.
Txoum, unable to comprehend the conversation, surveyed the scene, shifting his gaze between Ghost and the vigilant guards. Were it any other captive, the guards would not be nearly as on edge as they are now.
"Is there anything we can do to assist you?" Kiri asked.
"No," Ghost stated in between welding one of the components into place, "Estimated completion time ranges between 8 and 10 hours, depending on the complexity of the repairs."
Kiri sighed, realizing that their departure would have to be tomorrow. "I understand," she replied, her gaze shifting towards the Skel Suit. Noticing the similarity between the removed parts and the replacements, she couldn't help but ask, "Do you use the same components from the human suits?"
Ghost answered promptly, "Approximately 61.8% of my components are sourced from Skel Suits," they confirmed. "The RDA sought to streamline production and integration."
Kiri nodded. "I see."
Ghost paused and turned towards Kiri. "Provide a status update."
"Status update?" Kiri repeated. "What do you mean?"
Ghost clarified, "Please report on your vital signs and mental well-being."
Kiri blinked, realizing that Ghost was inquiring about her condition. She hesitated for a moment, then replied, "I'm... um, fine," she said, her surprise evident. "I could be better, I suppose."
"And what about the male?" Ghost inquired, directing their question towards Txoum.
Kiri struggled to find the right words. Ghost had never shown much interest in Txoum, aside from their initial hostility towards the machine. "Um, Txoum is also doing well," she replied awkwardly. She could tell that Txoum did not miss hearing his name mentioned. "He's still recovering from his stitches."
"My database indicates that Na'vi physiology has a 21.3% faster recovery rate compared to humans," Ghost stated matter-of-factly before returning to welding.
Kiri glanced at her arm, which had been cleaned and looked less dirty. She could barely make out the "Spider is #1" comment that he had written when they last met. "I certainly hope so," she remarked, a touch of impatience in her voice. "I can't wait to be rid of this cast."
Txoum saw that the guards were especially curious about Kiri speaking the sky people's language. "{What are you two talking about?}" he finally asked.
"{They asked how you and I were doing." Kiri replied, "And they also mentioned that it would take most of the day to complete their repairs.}"
"{What do you mean it asked about me?}" Txoum asked, confused.
Kiri shrugged. "{It just wanted to know how we were doing.}"
Txoum arched a brow. "{Why would it want to know that?}"
Kiri gave him a look and shrugged. "{I don't know. I don't know what it's thinking, but it never asked that before.}"
Txoum's eyes narrowed towards Ghost, oblivious to his expression. "{So we leave tomorrow?}"
Kiri nodded.
"{Well,}" Txoum said, letting out a forced sigh. "If we must wait, then we wait.}"
Kiri felt multiple things. She was confused about Txoum's uneasy reaction towards Ghost's "status update" request. However, she herself was not certain if the machine was developing emotions or whether or not they could continue to be useful. On the other hand, this was a stark contrast to their previous conversation, where Txoum insisted on leaving Ghost behind.
"Translation requested," Ghost suddenly asked Kiri, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Kiri turned to Ghost and relayed Txoum's words. "Txoum said that since you have proven yourself useful, we should wait," she explained.
"Understood. Waiting is a logical course of action given the circumstances, despite the necessity of repairs," they acknowledged.
Kiri furrowed her brow as she recalled that Ghost didn't want to deviate from their original plan. "I thought you were in a rush to leave yesterday," she said curiously. "What changed?"
Ghost momentarily ceased their repairs, their optical sensors exhibiting a flicker of contemplation. "After conducting additional analysis, the advantages of prolonging our stay to gather more data outweigh the potential hazards associated with an untimely departure," they stated. "Following RDA protocols, it is highly probable that they will initiate an inquiry into the prior event, enforce containment measures within this sector, and endeavor to locate our current whereabouts."
Kiri's heart began to beat faster as the thought of the RDA hunting them or the Taravan clan came to her mind. "What should we do then? Should we hide here?"
"Given the current circumstances, it is advisable to exercise caution and remain concealed within the Taravan clan's territory," Ghost advised. "Continued monitoring of the RDA's movements and communication will be essential in order to assess the level of risk and determine the most appropriate steps moving forward."
"Can you monitor the RDA from here?" Kiri asked.
"No. My current detection range is insufficient to effectively monitor Camp Charlie 3 and its communications from here," Ghost explained. "To gather real-time data and ensure accurate assessment, we would need to be in closer proximity to the camp, which can be done after the repairs are completed."
This concerned Kiri, and she thought a little longer. "Did you tell Erona about this? About what the RDA might do?"
Txoum watched Kiri closely, noting the tension in her voice. He couldn't understand the conversation but also didn't care much to learn the sky people's language.
"Yes, I have provided Erona with detailed information regarding RDA containment protocols and shared information about Camp Charlie 3," Ghost responded.
This only increased Kiri's worries. "How long do we have until the RDA shuts down this sector?" she asked, her voice filled with urgency.
"The timing is uncertain," Ghost responded steadily. "Based on previous RDA protocols, it could range from several hours to a few days,"
Ghost continued. "They will first close down all known exits out of the sector and then begin sweeping the sector one grid at a time in force. However, there is a high probability that Camp Charlie 3 has insufficient forces and will require reinforcements first."
Kiri nodded, absorbing the information. The looming threat of the RDA's actions weighed heavily on her mind, but it sounded like they had some time.
Txoum observed the concern etched on Kiri's face and gently nudged her arm, prompting her to share what was troubling her. Kiri turned to Txoum and translated Ghost's words to him in a hushed tone to not alert the guards.
"{Ghost says that the sky people are going to close down the jungle and search for us because of what we did last night,}" she explained with a concerned look. "{It could be hours or days. He says they told Erona this.}"
Txoum's eyes widened, a flicker of worry crossing his features. He nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "{What should we do then? If we take too long, we won't be able to go to Ayram Alusìng.}"
"{I don't know,}" Kiri said, looking down. "{With Ghost, we could defend ourselves, but we'd be too slow. It's safer to stay here.}"
"{Kiri,}" Txoum said, looking her in the eyes. "{It might be safe here, but every day that we are apart from our tribe, they could be more in danger.}"
Kiri could feel her eyes welling up, feeling exhausted. "{What can we do? Eywa's protection can only do so much. We almost got killed yesterday!}" she said in a barely hushed voice.
Txoum breathed hard and closed his eyes before placing his hands on Kiri's shoulders. "{If the sky people are a threat to us finding our people, then we must not allow them to stop us.}"
"{Wha-?}" Kiri started.
"{If,}" Txoum continued, "{we go to where they live and make them leave, then we are free to travel.}"
Kiri figured "make them leave" meant eliminating them in this context. "{Is that really the best way to do things?}"
Txoum gave a slight shrug. "{It's the only thing we can do. We cannot cower before the sky people forever; this is our land. This place... well, this place is Sylra's home. Home to the Na'vi, not sky people invaders.}"
Kiri took a deep breath, taking in Txoum's words. She does not want to go through the bloodshed again, but she could not help but agree. If they want to continue moving forward, this might be their only chance. "{With things as they are now, I don't know about making the sky people leave. We don't know enough about them. For now,}" she whispered, "{we need to wait for Ghost to fix their injuries. Once they're ready, we can bring them to the skypeople's camp and figure out what they're doing with all the Na'vi they're taking. Then we can figure out the next step.}"
"{Why can't we just do that ourselves?}" Txoum whispered back.
Kiri paused for a moment, considering Txoum's question. She glanced at Ghost, who was still diligently working on their repairs, before turning back to Txoum. "{It's too risky for us to go alone}," she explained. "{The sky people are well-armed, and we won't be seen if we have Ghost's expertise about the camp.}"
Txoum sighed. "{I suppose you're right}," he conceded. "{We'll have a better chance of success if we work together with Ghost.}"
Kiri raised an eyebrow, not missing the fact that Txoum just called it "Ghost" instead of "demon suit." {Exactly}," she said, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "{We'll wait for Ghost to be ready, and then we'll make our move.}"
Kiri turned to face Ghost. "We will be back later, and hopefully you'll be repaired and ready for our mission."
Ghost looked at Kiri. "Acknowledged," they replied. "I will await your return."
Kiri and Txoum gave a respectful nod to the guards before turning to leave the enclosure. Outside, the pair saw Sylra idly sitting against a mossy wall.
"{Hey, how did it go?}" Sylra asked when the pair approached.
Kiri let out a forceful sigh, and her tail hung low. "{Ghost was very injured from the fight last night, so they will need the rest of the day to heal themselves.}"
Sylra cocked her head to the side. "{How does that thing heal itself?}"
Kiri blinked while Txoum looked at her. "{Well, I don't know what to call it,}" she admitted. "{It's using the parts your people captured from the sky people.}"
Sylra stood up and nodded. "{Well, you are welcome to stay here as long as you need.}"
Txoum gave a polite nod to Sylra. "{We're grateful for your assistance, Sylra.}"
"{I understand that being separated from your people is challenging,}" Sylra responded kindly. "{But always remember, you are welcome among us. If you ever decide to return, our forests will be open to you.}"
"{Thank you, Sylra. Your kindness means a great deal to us,}" Kiri replied gratefully. Thoughts of Ghost's warning flickered in her mind. She could not bear to imagine such destructive forces befall upon the serene beauty of Eyrak Alar.
Sylra noticed the change in Kiri's expression. "{What's troubling you, Kiri?}"
Looking away, Kiri found it difficult to meet Sylra's eyes. "{Sylra, Ghost has warned me that the sky people will seek revenge for what happened last night.}"
"{What?}" Sylra frowned. "{But they hurt us first!}"
"{We have killed their kin, and this is their way. The sky people will hunt us down,}" Txoum interjected with a straightforward tone. "{No one will be safe to leave this place.}"
An awkward silence hung in the air.
Sylra took a deep breath, her gaze steady as she locked eyes with Kiri and Txoum. "{Eywa and Erona will take care of us. We will overcome the sky-people intruders}," she declared with unwavering confidence, surprising both Kiri and Txoum. "{And besides, we have allies. You saved my life, after all.}"
Just as the conversation began to deepen, a horn was blown from the center of the camp that caught everyone's attention.
"{Is there something going on?}" Txoum asked Sylra.
"{Oh, we better hurry!}" Sylra exclaimed, her voice tinged with excitement. "{Erona is hosting today's meeting soon at the Gathering Grove. Everyone's gathering there to discuss what to do about the sky, people.}"
"{I thought you said it was adults only,}" Txoum responded with an arched brow.
A mischievous smile played on Sylra's lips as she glanced at her companions. "{My father has already said as such,}" she revealed, her tone suggesting a hidden plan. "{But don't worry, I know a way to sneak in,}" she said to Kiri and Txoum.
Kiri and Txoum exchanged glances again. "{Are you sure this is wise?}" Kiri asked, feeling a bit concerned, "{Won't you get in trouble?}"
Sylra couldn't help but let out a mischievous laugh. "{I've never let trouble stop me before,}" she replied, "{And this meeting is just too important to miss.}"
Sylra quietly led Kiri and Txoum towards the Gathering Grove through the dense foliage off the path. She gestured upwards towards a tree and began a nimble, silent climb towards the branches. She was clearly quite good at climbing. With Sylra's assistance, Txoum made his way up the tree, followed by Kiri, who required extra help due to her arm cast. Once settled on the branches, they felt hidden by the foliage.
The Gathering Grove had an air of solemnity as the Taravan Na'vi adults and elders gathered for the meeting. The experienced and weathered faces of the community mirrored their resilience and wisdom. Erona appeared to effortlessly command strength and authority as she stood on the stage alongside another individual. The anticipation among the crowd was tangible.
Erona's voice reverberated through the Grove. "{My fellow brothers and sisters,}" she began with a resolute tone, "{we have gathered here today to address the recent encounters with the sky people.}" She gestured towards a couple whose ages reminded Kiri of Jake and Neytiri. They stood close to the center, whose faces were etched in pain.
"{We have received news that two more members of our clan have gone missing.}" Erona's voice was heavy with sorrow. The crowd responded with murmurs of disbelief and anger. The mother quietly broke out in tears, which also made Sylra gasp and tear up on her own. Kiri and Txoum looked on with alarm.
"{Did you know them?}" Txoum asked Sylra, who wiped away her tears.
"{Yes,}" Sylra said softly. "{Their boys are Kailani and Tarek. I haven't seen them around for a few days. I thought they were just skipping the Sunrise Blessings because they always sleep in.}" Her voice trailed off.
"{We beg of you,}" the father pleaded, his voice choking with grief, "{please help us find our children. We cannot bear this any longer.}"
A moment of silence was held for the parents. The air was like a heavy, sorrowful blanket.
Erona met the father's gaze. "{Until we can be certain that they were captured by the sky people, we will assume they are still out there under Eywa's protection. We have already dispatched our scouts in all directions to search for them,}" she assured gently. "{Rest assured, my brothers and sisters, we will spare no effort to bring them home.}" With a nod, a friend got up to guide the parents back to their seats.
"{While many of our people have been taken by the sky people,}" Erona continued, "{We have been blessed to still have three of our members with us. Last night, the sky people attempted to abduct Nari, Kael, and their child, but they were stopped in their attempt.}"
That stirred up the crowd with even more surprised murmurs. Many eyes were on Kael and Nari, but they looked forward. Sylra shifted in her position, uncomfortable for her parents.
A voice emerged from the crowd, eager to learn more. "{Erona, what about the newcomers? Are they involved in these sky people's matters?}"
Kiri and Txoum immediately perked up when they were mentioned.
Erona's voice resonated across the gathering as she addressed the curious crowd. "{These brave individuals, Kiri and Txoum from the Omaticaya clan, played a crucial role last night,}" she explained. "{When the sky people attempted to kidnap Nari, Kael, and their child, it was Kiri and Txoum who courageously intervened and prevented the abduction.}"
Kiri and Txoum glanced at each other, sharing a sense of pride among themselves. Sylra offered them both a smile and a nod of the head.
Whispers spread like wildfire among the Taravan, their eyes reflecting concern and uncertainty. One Na'vi raised their voice, their tone tinged with suspicion. "{Is it true that they brought a sky-person metal being with them here?}"
Erona scanned the crowd. "{Yes,}" she confirmed after a pause.
The crowd erupted into a cacophony of disapproval. The chorus of discontent was so sudden that it nearly threw Kiri, Txoum, and Sylra off their branches. Surely those outside the Gathering Grove could hear the noise. "{How could you allow such a thing, Erona?}" One clearly furious Na'vi stepped forward with a voice shaking with emotion. "{It goes against everything we stand for!"
Kiri was amazed to see another Olo'eyktan at work. When Erona raised her hand, it calmed the crowd's reaction somehow. Even Jake would need more than a raised hand to do that. "{The sky-person creation is known as Ghost,}" she said loudly, despite the crowd's growing discontent. Kiri, Txoum, and Sylra thought the noise would be concerning to those outside the Gathering Grove. "{The creation calls itself Ghost, and it has abandoned the sky people. Last night, it aided Kael and Nari.}"
At this point, the crowd's noise subsided slightly. Many eyes were on Kael and Nari. Sylra, watching from above, shifted uncomfortably. "{I understand your concerns. I do not trust this creation blindly. However, in exchange for items captured from the sky, Ghost has provided us information about them.}"
It was clear that the Na'vi remained skeptical, with mistrust on their faces. Another individual took a step forward. "{You trust this metal demon over the wisdom of our ancestors?}" His accusatory tone was dripping with disdain. "{How can we be sure it won't turn against us?}"
Kiri let out a shaky sigh, trying to release the tension in her shoulders. The responses from the Taravan Na'vi did not surprise her. She suspected her own Omaticayan people would be the same.
Kael rose abruptly, cutting off the crowd's noise. "{I understand your concerns, my kin, but I am compelled to speak,}" he asserted, his eyes scanning the now silent crowd. "{Ghost saved our daughter's life last night. It fought off the sky people who tried to take us, and I owe them a debt of gratitude for that.}"
Na'ri, standing beside Kael, added her voice as well. "{Ghost has shown us that not all sky people are our enemies,}" she said. "{Kiri from the Omaticaya clan has also told us there are many sky people who fight on the side of the Na'vi.}"
Sylra was beaming at the sight of her parents making things right for what happened last night.
A murmur of uncertainty rippled through the crowd, their expressions reflecting a mix of disbelief and contemplation. Some Na'vi exchanged hesitant glances, torn between their deep-seated mistrust of the sky people and the possibility of a newfound ally.
Erona cleared her throat, capturing the attention of the crowd again. "{In my discussion with Ghost this morning, it has shared valuable information about the sky people camp and provided me with a grim warning,}" she announced, her voice carrying a mix of determination and caution. "{They warned us that the sky people would retaliate because of last night's actions, and the attack would come soon. We must be vigilant and prepared.}"
The Taravan listened intently, their eyes fixed on Erona. "{How reliable is this information? Can we truly trust them?}" asked one Na'vi curiously.
"{Though unconventional, the information shared by Ghost has been verified,}" Erona explained, gesturing for a group of Na'vi to bring forth a captured RDA hologram projector. They carefully placed it before her, and with a swift activation, a holographic map materialized in the air. The depiction of the RDA camp, known as Charlie 03, shimmered before them, displaying intricate details with remarkable clarity and precision.
Gasps of astonishment echoed through the crowd as they marveled at the holographic display, as they had never seen something like that before. "{This is incredible! It's like seeing into the heart of the sky people's camp,}" one Na'vi remarked with awe.
Txoum's and Sylra's eyes were wide-eyed like the moon, and they tried to lean closer to look at the projection. Kiri was equally shocked and made a mental note to ask Erona how she knew to use a projector.
Erona smiled, acknowledging the wonder in their eyes. "{Indeed, the knowledge provided by Ghost has allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the enemy's stronghold,}" she explained. "{We can see their structures, their defenses, and the areas where they are most vulnerable.}"
Another Na'vi pointed at a heavily fortified section on the holographic map, their brow furrowed with concern. "{What about this area? It appears to be well defended.}"
"{Do we even need to scout if they have a map of everything already?}" Txoum whispered to Kiri.
Kiri shook her head. "{That only shows where everything is from when the map was made,}" she explained. "{Ghost said the sky people would send more reinforcements, so we need to know how many there are and how to get in.}"
Erona's finger traced the fortified region. "{That is their main hut,}" she replied. "{It is where their leaders make critical decisions, and it will pose a significant challenge for us.}"
Erona's gaze swept across the assembly. "{While we prepare for our strike, we will fortify our defenses, deploy more scouts, and stand united as a clan,}" she declared with a determined tone. "{Together, we will confront the challenges that lie ahead, protect what is sacred to us, and ensure the safety of our people.}"
The Taravan adults and elders nodded, finally embracing the turn of events. The determination in their eyes mirrored Erona's.
"{May Eywa guide us in our endeavors,}" Erona concluded. "{You are all dismissed.}"
The Taravan members started to scatter, their footsteps echoing through the Gathering Grove. Nari and Kael stayed behind, as Erona had instructed them to remain.
Erona spoke once more. "{Nari, Kael, I need you to form a scouting party and gather information about the sky people's camp,}" she instructed. "{We need to know their numbers, their movements, and any other details that can aid us in our preparations.}"
Nari's eyes scanned the surroundings as she absorbed the task at hand. Suddenly, she noticed concealed figures hiding amidst the branches of a nearby tree. "{You there, come down immediately!}" she shouted sternly.
Startled, Txoum, Sylra, and Kiri exchanged apprehensive glances before hesitantly descending from their hiding spot. They approached Nari, their faces betraying a mix of guilt and curiosity.
Erona's disapproving gaze fell upon Sylra, disappointment evident in her eyes. "{Is this how we honor our unity and trust?}" she questioned. "{Spying on our own people goes against the core values of our clan.}"
Sylra lowered her gaze. "{We... I was just curious,}" she confessed regretfully. "{I didn't mean to cause any harm or disrespect.}"
Txoum spoke up in Sylra's defense, his voice earnest. "{Olo'eyktan, it was my idea,}" he admitted, straightening his posture. "{Though I am not of your clan, I am willing to accept any punishment-"
Erona raised her hand, cutting Txoum off. Nari's expression softened a little as she looked at her daughter. "{Curiosity can be dangerous, as you learned yesterday,}" she cautioned. Kael remained silent.
Sylra nodded and let out a sigh. "{I am sorry, mother,}" she said, "{It won't happen again.}"
Kiri suddenly stepped forward, and she looked at Erona. "{Olo'eyktan, I volunteer to join the scouting party,}" she stated. "{Once Ghost's injuries are healed by sundown, we should bring them with us. The darkness will provide us with better cover to approach the enemy camp stealthily, and Ghost can gather more information than we can with just our eyes and ears.}"
Kiri's proposal caught everyone there off guard, and they all turned to look at Erona. The Olo'eyktan's initial response was one of concern. "{Kiri, you are brave, but you are still young,}" she said, her brows furrowing. "{The dangers that lie ahead require experience and caution.}"
"{Olo'eyktan, Kiri has already proven her courage and resourcefulness,}" Kael interjected. "{She also speaks the language of the sky people, and besides yourself, she is the only one that can communicate with Ghost.}"
Nari nodded in agreement. "{I agree with my mate, Olo'eyktan,}" she said, looking over Kiri. "{I do not oppose bringing Kiri and Ghost along.}"
Erona contemplated their words, her gaze shifting between the individuals. After a brief pause, Erona's expression softened, and she nodded. "{Very well,}" she acquiesced. "{Kiri, you may join the scouting party.}"
A surge of gratitude coursed through Kiri as she nodded in appreciation with Kael and Nari.
Txoum, who had been silently observing the exchange, stepped forward. "{And I will join Kiri,}" he declared, his voice filled with determination. Kiri glanced at Txoum and smiled appreciatively.
Sylra, however, remained silent.
Erona's gaze shifted to Txoum, carefully assessing him. "{Your strength is commendable. You may join as well,}" she said. "{Your dedication to your friends will be a valuable asset on this mission.}"
Txoum lowered his head respectfully. "{Thank you, Olo'eyktan.}"
"{May Eywa protect you all,}" Erona said finally. "{I wish you luck. You are free to go.}"
Everyone nodded and bowed their heads before leaving the gathering grove. Outside, Kiri, Txoum, Sylra, Kael, and Nari gathered together to discuss the next steps of their journey.
Nari took the lead in the conversation. "{Once your friend is ready, we will depart at nightfall,}" she said to Kiri. "{The journey to the sky people's camp is long, and we must travel with light steps and remain hidden.}"
"{Lucky for us, we've been practicing that already,}" Txoum said with a smug look on his face. Kiri and Sylra rolled their eyes and shook their heads.
Nari lifted her head, observing the confident young hunter. "{Perhaps, but you were the first one I spotted,}" she remarked. Kiri and Sylra couldn't help but chuckle, while Txoum grunted in response.
Kael raised a hand, looking over to Sylra. "{Why didn't you volunteer yourself?}" he asked softly. Normally, I'd think you would be the first to ask.}"
Sylra felt caught off guard by the question, fidgeting uncomfortably. "{Um, well, I didn't think I should join,}" she admitted, averting her eyes. "{Especially after nearly getting us captured.}"
Kael reached out, placing a reassuring hand on Sylra's shoulder. "{We've all made mistakes,}" he said gently. "{You shouldn't let them define you.}"
Sylra looked up, touched by her father's words. A smile played on her lips as she nodded. "{Thank you, father.}"
"{You are welcome to join us if you wish,}" Nari offered, her eyes conveying a mother's concern. "{Just remember to listen to my advice next time.}"
Sylra took a deep breath, gathering her resolve. "{I would like to come,}" she replied with a determined tone.
Kiri and Txoum, observing the exchange, both nodded appreciatively at Sylra's decision.
"{Very well.}" Nari nodded. "{Let us meet back here at sundown. Take the time to eat, rest, and prepare yourselves.}"
