"Ananias," Gunther murmured into the red haired messenger's ear, "may I speak with you in private for a moment?"

Ananias blinked curiously upon receiving such an unexpected request from the old and renowned knight, but eventually awkwardly nodded in response. "Um, yeah, sure, okay." Gunther then led him away from any possible eavesdropping. "So, um," Ananias apprehensively folded his arms, "what exactly did you want to talk about?"

Gunther took a deep and solemn breath before firmly folding his arms himself. "Forgive me for bringing this all up," he carefully began, "perhaps it is simply the paranoia that comes from serving the royal family for as long as I have, but...," he shook his head and let out an apprehensive grunt, "everything concerning you and your friends Selena, Odin, and Laslow... it quite frankly reeks of suspicion."

Ananias nodded understandingly. "I see."

"Now let me be quite clear," Gunther said, "the quality of service that the four of you have displayed has been second to none, however the fact that the four of you all seem to know one another and yet will not tell anyone exactly how that is is frankly quite worrying."

"..."

"I realize that the four of you were chosen by members of the royal family themselves," Gunther continued, "but it would certainly put everyone's worries a bit more at ease if at least one of you would disclose some of your background to one of us."

"Yeah," Ananias said, "that sounds fair."

Gunther raised an eyebrow inquisitively at this. "I am glad to hear you say that. So does that mean that you volunteer yourself to undergo a bit of interruption, hmm?"

"Well, I mean, if Laslow, Odin, and Selena aren't willing to undergo it, then sure, why not? I've got nothing to hide."

Gunther solemnly and approvingly nodded. "Excellent. Your decision is much appreciated."

"So, who's the guy who's going to be questioning me?" Ananias asked.

"Why, me, of course," Gunther said.

Ananias raised his eyebrows in surprise. "You?"

Gunther nodded. "Yes." He then eyed Ananias suspiciously. "Is there a problem?"

Ananias innocently shook his head. "No, it's just that... I just assumed that background checks were below your pay grade, that's all."

Gunther shook his head. "Nonsense. As long as it's for the betterment of the kingdom to which I serve, no task is ever too beneath an honorable knight of Nohr."

"Except for dishonorable ones, right?"

Gunther nodded. "Precisely. Now, if you would excuse me, I have my fair share of errands to run and I plan on getting them done as soon as possible, so if you don't mind, I shall be on my way."

Ananias' eyes widened in surprise. "W-W-Wait a minute!" he said. "What about the interrogation?"

Gunther simply raised an eyebrow questionably. "What about the interrogation?" he innocently asked.

"The one that we were just talking about," Ananias stated.

"Ah, yes, that one," Gunther said. "Yes, no, that will unfortunately have to be scheduled for another time, I'm afraid."

Ananias blinked in confusion at Gunther's suddenly strange behavior regarding this seemingly important topic. "But I thought that the whole point of this interrogation was to alleviate some of the suspicions surrounding me. Wouldn't telling me about the interrogation and then giving me time until then just give me time to make up a convincing story for myself?"

"Why, yes, of course," Gunther said. He then leaned towards Ananias menacingly and asked, "Are you saying that that is what I should expect when we finally come around to it? A lie and a fantasy?"

Realizing that he had just made the situation much more needlessly worse for himself, Ananias gulped nervously before shaking his head, raising his arms, and saying, "N-No, sir! Absolutely not, sir! It's just like I said, I've got nothing to hide... sir."

After studying the flabbergasted Ananias for a while, Gunther simply nodded and said, "I certainly hope so. Farewell, Ananias. Until we meet again."

"F-Farewell," Ananias replied weakly before heaving out a nervous breath after holding it in for far too long.
