History:
Born in the major town of Charkiwa to the Acqua family, Amas Acqua was just six when he watched his village burn from the window of a Bullhead. Charkiw, along with 8000 of its inhabitants, was lost to a surprise Grimm swarm that overran militia and local hunters. He was taken to the City of Vale, where he spent 2 years in the local kingdom's foster care system. However, due to a mixture of bureaucracy and mismanagement, Amas, along with hundreds of other children, who survived various Grimm attacks but were orphaned, ended up in the Kingdom of Atlas in 68 AGW/2028 A.D.
Between 2028 and 2033 A.D, Amas, along with dozens of other Faunus youth, ended up in the then Civil Rights Organization Called the White Fang. It is recorded that Amas participated in multiple peaceful protests that turned violent due to the overzealous actions of both private security and Atlas security forces prior to General Ironwood's reforms. This would also be the time he met his adopted sister Melo.
In 2033 A.D/ 74 AG, Ghira Belladonna was in the process of stepping down as the leader of the White Fang. Despite what one might think, the process was difficult and confusing. The Atlas branch of the White Fang, the most militant of the branches, began openly attacking civilian targets, including but not limited to: SDC dust supply convoys, police stations, dust shops, warehouses for military-grade items, and ultimately the children of upper-class families. This caused a split between the Atlas Branch, roughly defined as the 'Revolutionaries' who wanted to bring an end to the SDC and the Kingdom of Atlas with all means necessary (including murder) and the 'moderates' who are a diverse collection of White Fang members ranging from pacifist who wanted no part in the fighting and pragmatists who argued for a more limited target set and to avoid civilian casualties. It's known that Amas Aqua, along with Melo and several other Valean and Vacuan orphans.
[Uncensor information, partially successful]: The current leader of the White Fang Atlas branch, [censored], orchestrated a plot to rid the moderates. This culminated in the Limelight Warehouse arrests, where the base and housing for the moderates were deliberately leaked to the Atlas military. Amas would be arrested, along with a quarter of the White Fang Atlas branch (including most of the moderators). Already unsympathetic due to the rising militarism, Atlas courts sentenced most of the captured White Fang members to prison. They were then subsequently put into several SDC mining camps due to the SDC having a monopoly over various prison facilities.
Note that while it is known that the SDC uses prisoner labour, these camps are 'heavily' guarded by private security and out of the way of civilization, making it extremely difficult for reporters and civil rights activists to investigate.
However, Amas's stay within the SDC would be short-lived (several months). He, along with Melo and dozens of other Valean orphans, found their camp, the SDC Torrent mining facility, attacked by forces of the NATO Solitas battlegroup sent to investigate the mass reports of abuse were heard (and that it was too far away for the Atlas military to respond). Thousands of labourers would be rescued and brought back to the fortress city of New Mantle, NATO's primary shipyard and naval base on Remnant.
Both Melo and Amas would be adopted by a US marine and air force couple known as the Ermey family. However, still feeling bitter from the betrayal of the White Fang, the siblings would swear revenge against the organization they had once loved. When the Terran nations activated the Hunter's Cadet League, based on North American and Western Europe military-inspired youth programs, to begin teaching skills to those with their auras, both Melo and Amas Ermey would sign up. Here, they would meet the Ross siblings, Sydney, Nora, Lie, and Maia, who were a part of the Canadian contingent. Alongside the wound befriended Amelia Pelayo (British) and Ram Sharma (Indian) and they would form a tight-knit group.
After receiving training and education thanks to the Hunter's Cadet League, Amas would enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Due to a mixture of his time in the Hunter's Cadet League, anti-Grimm ops around Buckler, and time in the US Marine 5th Amphibious Assault Battalion has made Amas one of the best marines NATO has of his age.
Remnant, Beacon Academy.
March 21st
"Welp, she's mad," Amber noted as the two were sitting in the empty auditorium waiting for the airship to drop off its load of the newest generation of students.
"Hm?" Amas looked up from his Ipad to see the telepathic-wielding huntress instructor march past them.
The week before the initiation, the maiden and the marine mostly hung around Beacon Academy due to Ozpin's insistence. They spent that time shoving the Senator and much of Amas's gear into a hangar bay.
They also had the chance to explore Vale a bit, though Amber carried her staff and Amas with a concealed M45 on his belt, just in case Salem's forces tried a hand at another kidnapping.
Not that it happened. Keeping Amber A) Alive and B) her powers out of Salem's hands meant that there were a few Intelligence teams keeping an eye.
That meant that since they were mostly in Vale, they were the first 'first' years to arrive.
"Heard her muttering something about a rose being accepted too early," Amas replied, though he already knew who it was about.
"Rose?" Amber whispered.
"You know them?" Amas fired back.
"I knew a Summer Rose once. She was like an auntie. Probably the few I got close to when I got my powers." Amber sighed. "Not many people try to stay close. Blame the great wizard."
"I'm sorry." Amas replied.
"Don't be. Blame the guy who decided the best idea for people getting magic is a random lottery." Amber sighed.
"Another question we have on these Maidens. Why does a Maiden have to be female?" Amas threw the question out there. "I mean, are there no boys or men fully capable of wielding this power?"
Amber paused. "I….actually don't know."
"You know you would have a pool of better candidates if men could take the powers. Jesus, no wonder you guys are in a conflict with the White Fang, you can't even handle Gender Equality correctly." Amas muttered.
"I resent that." Amber protested.
"What? Are males just not capable of handling Maiden powers? Sheesh, might need to lead a-"
DING! "(P.A) Attention to all faculty members, the airships carrying the initiation members are about to dock in around 15 minutes. Please prepare for arrival. Thank you."
"Welp, I'm bored. Want to watch the ships dock?" Amber got up.
"Meh, might as well." Amas the Devil Dog got up as well. "Let's go."
9 minutes later
Dockyard observation room
For Remnant, artistic values took precedence over anything else. Ok except for Atlas. And Vacuo. But the latter was poor so they didn't matter (according to some rich dude with a mustache).
The massive insect-like airship, with wings spanning dozens of metres long, was capable of transporting thousands of people. Outsizing even Earth's largest aircraft carriers, it was a symbol of Vale's ability to make something functional and beautiful.
It also caused the aircraft designers of Earth to vomit their lunch out. And most in the NATO and Allied forces were…really not liking the design. Even those who were born outside the fortress cities had developed a taste for Earth's more pragmatic designs.
Amas was trying to calculate how much fuel/dust one could save if they had just chosen a more fuel-efficient design. Or even a land bus would do! And they travelled sssssooooo slow. Even the heaviest models of Terran Helicopters and strategic lifters could travel faster.
And think of the crew and maintenance one would need for such a beast! No wonder Terran forces stuck to maritime ships, cheaper that way and you could build more.
"Not liking the design?" Amber smirked.
"I grew up with people who had a preference for function over form," Amas grumbled. "I swear, the Kingdoms enjoy making things that make good target practice."
"Oh it's not so bad." Amber laughed. "Those wings, they had a bit of beauty. Though I heard somewhere they don't really do much-"
Amas gagged. He had heard from his sister about how much drag and air resistance one of those airships would have to deal with. "DO THOSE WINGS HAVE ANY FUNCTION?!"
"Uh, I don't think so?" Amber tilted her head.
"...I'm starting to wonder how you guys lasted so long," Amas grumbled
"(P.A) All personnel, the airships are docking. Prepare for landing. Thank You."
The pair watched as the pair of massive airships began to hover next to the main docking area and then slowed to a halt. Then a massive gangway extended over to one of the exits.
Before long, dozens of people began disembarking off the airship in various different pieces of clothing. Some wore outfits not uncommon from a city in the United States. Others wore outfits that shared a resemblance to some more traditional clothes of India. Some wore full-body suits, others wore elegant dresses.
And then the maiden/marine pair noticed a familiar (to the devil dog) blond hair, blue-eyed, hoodie-wearing male teenager rush of the airship in a panic with a hand over his mouth.
"Offf, he looks like he's gonna have a new projectile weapon," Amas said as he winced. Neither he or his friends really had motion sickness, but he knew some marines that did.
And it was annoying to clean up on a Mistral or America class.
Plus, the Human Body was not adapted to zero-g movement or life. That was why astronauts and fighter jet pilots had extensive training to beat motion sickness them.
"This is a big group, how many do you think there are on that airship?" Amber asked as she eyed the massive vessel."
Beacon Academy was a large complex since Remnant was always hungry for more hunters (baring Menagerie and the Terran Settlements). The need for all the infrastructure to train, teach, and support thousands of trainees meant that the academics rivalled the size of universities like UBC or the University of Washington.
"Uh I don't know the interior of the airship, but I'm guessing a good 200 minimum. Max 800." Amas guessed. "Head down and chat?"
"Yeah, there's nothing we can do from up here," Amas admitted. It was a great view of the docks, airships, and the massive river Beacon bordered. Still, the universe was always moving. Might as well make some friends.
After a few minutes of traversing hallways, leaping off roofs, and navigating towards the water fountain where many of the passengers were walking off.
"So Amber, anyone that stands out for you?" Amas asked.
The Fall Maiden took a look around. All the new graduates were wearing various outfits from different inspirations. Many designs had a taste from science fiction, the past, fantasy, or even more fancy versions of civilian clothing.
Amber, on the other hand, was wearing a modified version of her original brown and white countryside-style clothes. And she was wearing a green cloak overhead to obscure herself. Again, not unusual but it didn't really stake up to the tailor-made outfits of her peers
And Amas was worse. He was just gearing a Green marine PT t-shirt and forest camo pants. Peasant clothing, as his adopted mother would say.
"Well aside from that dude who vomited, no." Amber frowned.
KABOOM! An explosion erupted near the front of the main avenue.
"An explosion already? We're off to a great start." Amber sarcastically said. "Alright screw it, let's head in."
The pair blended in with the crowd, going with the flow as they pushed into the amphitheatre.
Amber and Amas, however, kept an eye out, incase Salem decided to send one of her subordinates to infiltrate the crowd. There was always that chance-
It was at that moment that Amas bumped into someone as he was looking around in the crowd. "Oh! Sorry, mister-"
"Heya! No issue." Amas turned to see a certain with a beaming smile. "Yang Xiao-Long at your service. I see you're having a ppuuurrr-fect day?"
Amas's ears curled up in disgust while Amber turned a different shade of pale. "No, just no."
"Oh don't be a mood killer. You'll come to love my puns." Yang smirked.
"Or die from auditory cancer it causes," Amber muttered.
"Booooo. You two aren't any fun." Yang pouted. "Anyways, nice ears. I think they're paw-some." And then Yang laughed when Amas turned an interesting shade of green.
"That's it. I'm making a tactical withdrawal." Amas stepped back. Dear gods, why did he agree to this mess?
"Nope! Come here!" Yang suddenly grabs both the secret Maiden and the Marine and drags them along with a yelp.
"I see a couple alone without friends so I'm making you friends!" Yang declared as she dragged them through the crowd.
"Hey, let us go! We- wait did you say couple?" Amber's mind went blank.
"Don't worry, your the puurr-fect duo." Cue the return of green faces.
Yang dragged both Amas and Amber right to the entrance where a familiar black-haired/red-dyed sliver-eyed 15-year-old girl and a teenage blond hair, blue-eyed male.
"Hey Rubes! Found you a spot and new friends!" Yang yelled.
"Oh Yang!" the red reaper exclaimed. "And Random weirdos!" Amber and Amas galked as Ruby continued speaking. "Jaune! This was the guy I was talking about! Say hello Jaune!"
"Uh, Hi?" The teenager named Jaune waved his hand.
"Hhhheeeyyyy." Amas suddenly found himself being really out of place.
"I see you bagged a boyfriend on your first day." Yang teased.
"What!? No, I got blown up and yelled at on my first day!" Ruby cried out.
"So that was the cause of the explosion earlier?" Amber blinked.
"Wait, that was what I heard?" Yang's smile dropped.
"Yes! I tripped over some crabby girls some crabby girl's luggage and she started yelling at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she started yelling at me again, and then I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!" Ruby cried.
"You!"
"Gah!" Ruby, Yang, Amber, and Jaune leapt back. Ams whipped around, hand on his M45, only to see a white hair petite girl while Ruby leapt into Yang's arms. "I said I was sorry! It was an accident!"
"You were lucky we weren't blown off the cliff!" the petite White Hair declared.
"Considering you're both alive, the explosion must not have been that bad," Amber commented
"Look, you just started on the wrong foot." Amas held up his hands in a placating matter. "Why don't you two just take a breath, and start over? You-"
"As if I would be friends with a clueless child mindlessly walking around as if she was in a cookie shop!" Wiess spat out. "Of course, an uncultured animal would suggest something like that, you aren't even wearing clothes befitting a Huntsman! What, did you fish your clothes from the dumpster?"
Suddenly, the entire amphitheatre felt as if the temperature dropped a few degrees as Amber looked as if she would strangle the heiress. "Watch your fucking tone ice queen." The maiden's hands started to smoke.
Suddenly the impending battle between the magical maiden and heiress was interrupted by microphone feedback, and everyone turned towards the Headmaster.
"I will keep this brief. You have travelled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, and direction. You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step.
As Ozpin left, Glynda stepped up to talk, "You will gather in the ballroom tonight; tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
"Well, he seems kind of…off," Yang commented through the crowd of muttering students.
"He is a headmaster. Bound to have something on his mind." Amas commented. "Now."
The 4 young ladies and 1 blond man turned their attention to the marine. "It's been a good day. I say we walk around campus and find somewhere to camp. Or most of us. Ice queen can go screw off wherever rich people do."
"Hey!" Wiess protested.
"Sounds good. Let's go!" Yang declared and the 5 of them left the fuming heiress in the amphitheatre."
Recording
Date: 2035 A.D
Location: Unknown [assumed to be a NATO installation]
USAF General: "What do you mean we have a fighter jet shortage? We sent hundreds over to Remnant!"
Indian Representative: "That's what we mean. We don't have enough airpower to combat the Grimm."
Australian Representative: "We have enough jets to hold our positions and cover our naval formations. We don't have enough jets to cover any offensive operations for the sheer number of ops."
German General: "The Aussie is right. There aren't enough prop planes and drones to cover any defensive operations while the stationary defenses are being upgraded, thus we're using most of our jets for defensive and interception work. And most of our militaries don't have any spare units that the SRA won't notice that have gone missing."
USAF General: "Are you sure about that? What happened to the hundreds of mothballed F-16s and F-15s we sent you? Weren't those enough?"
Turkish Representative: "You mean the hundreds you let rot in the boneyards? Good lord, you yanks leave perfectly good planes to rot in the sun. It's taking time to retrofit them for Anti-Grimm ops, plus restoration. Even for us, that takes months."
Polish Commander: "We need more jets, and you have the biggest fleet."
USAF General: "This wouldn't have happened if you didn't gut your militaries pre Crimea-"
Indian Representative: "Even if our European friends maintained high readiness, they're geared for military-on-military action, not the Grimm. Until those retrofitted Eagles and Falcons get online-"
U.K Representative: "Or literally any other of the fighter and UCAV programs."
Indian Representative: "-we need new fighters now to combat airborne Grimm now."
USAF General: "Are you asking us to send more of our own squadrons of F-35s? Or 6th Gen? More Super Tucanos?"
EU Representative: "Actually we're asking for a few hundred planes that you recently placed in the mothball fleet. Something that would help us greatly, something that wouldn't be missed, something useful on Remnant."
USAF General: "...No. You can't be serious."
Japanese General: "Deadly."
USAF General: "...You know it's going to be a B**** to revive and maintain those craft right? Congress won't be willing to shell out the funds-"
EU Representative: "Which we have and can provide."
USAF General: "- there's no way in hell my government will let this deal go-"
Indian Representative: "You sold F-35Bs to the Taiwanese. After [censored] stole that Type 75 carrier from the PLAN and gave it to the ROCN. If you're willing to sell stealth aircraft to a nation that doesn't exist on paper, you can give up a plane that's decades old."
USAF General: "...Is this entire coalition ganging up on us like how we ganged up on Germany to release the Leopards. Why are you even going after the [Censored]?"
German General: "Consider this revenge Yankie."
Indian Representative: "If we had any other reserve aircraft, we would send it. It's just that most of our reserve craft are either from the 70s, or from Russia."
Indian Representative: "And you know our current relations with the SRA for getting spare parts. And with new tensions flaring up in the middle east, we have no more active air squadrons to spare."
USAF General: "...There's something else isn't it?"
Japanese General: "My people developed a brand new pulse laser weapon that can be mounted on fighter jets. We have to thank those SDC technicians that we just got. It's an amazing weapon that tears right through armour and Grimm alike, though mounting it on our, F-35s and Typhoons is proving difficult."
Korean Representative: "There's also the new micro missile pods we developed. The ones that allow our planes to carry dozens of air to air missiles. Great against drones, lighter grimm, airborne. Perfect for the [censored]."
USAF General: "...I don't see the need for why-"
EU Rep: "Darkness also requested it."
USAF General: "..."
Japanese General: "Look, either lend us those [censored] and we'll pay for 2/3s of the cost of rearmament and upgrades or we may end up having to send F-4s and MiG-21s in their place instead. We just don't have enough drones and active squadrons to spare. Please, I rather our benefactors not be pissed because a favourite jet of his wasn't sent. This is our next best option, yankie."
USAF General: "...Fine. I'll send it up the line."
United Nations Database…NATO logistics
It's no secret that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and her allies always had one advantage over their rivals: Logistics. Thanks to the vast political and economic alliances the US and the EU had over the world, Western forces could mobilize and deploy active combat troops anywhere on Earth. It was thanks to this logistical network that NATO could pour equipment and supplies to Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian conflict along with troops and material to South Korea and Japan during the Korean Continuation War.
When combat operations began on Remnant, NATO and allied forces sought to recreate a system that would allow their forces to move men, material, and supplies across the world of Remnant. Thanks to both Remnant's smaller size, the kingdom's limited surveillance capabilities, and Earth's much more extensive experience with aero-space flight, NATO air and sea convoys were able to transit between each fortress city unmolested by natives.
Most logistical transportation takes place on Earth. Non-critical and more overt supplies being shipped around can simply be transported via normal trade routes and transportation lanes on Earth. This usually consists of food supplies, construction materials, and spare parts, and those that would not go unnoticed if gone missing is usually shipped to whichever nation holds the gateway.
However, this changes when it comes to more critical resources like personnel, weapon systems, and high-cost munitions (such as AGMs or Laser crystals). Due to the publicity of such systems or resources being sent around, it is more difficult to hide shipments of military goods to nations that never 'ordered' them. As such, most military goods are shipped over to the United States of America, Earth's major maritime and trading power, where they are shipped over to CFB Suffield and then transported to the Fortress city of Buckler (located in Eastern Sanus) in secret and 'lost' in the U.S's vast sea of logistical and trading networks. If possible, said systems are produced in one of the fortress cities on Remnant.
Depending on where it needs to go, resources are either shipped over to other gateway Fortress cities or smaller fortress settlements (Same and smaller population as fortress cities but lacking the Gateway to Earth). For the former, Allied forces will use various civilian transport ships purchased from local sources to hide their true identities. These will then transport resources in convoys of 6-12 ships escorted by either submarine (though only rarely) or civilian cargo ships converted into Q-Ships to ward off Grimm and pirates. When a convoy is safely out of sight of Kingdom vessels or other natives, a detachment of frigates, destroyers, and/or light carriers may arrive to escort them to their destination.
For the latter, Buckler, New Misawa, and Sahyog, all land-based fortress cities on the continents, connect to the 13 smaller Allied controlled Supply Settlements. Due to the proximity for these strategically important sites, Allied forces use a series of underground high-speed rail lines. These rail lines use trains based on the Japanese Shinkansen and the Taiwanese High-Speed Rail and allow for the transit of material and personnel between the various settlements without notice from the kingdoms. These tunnels are lined with special materials that are impervious to Grimm attacks and even ward off Grimm using [Classified]. Thanks to the use of Mecha-shifting technology, Terran engineers have created train cars that can rapidly shift to accommodate either materials or personnel without impacting train services. Colloquially called the Terran Allied Remnant High-Speed Rail ( TAR-HSR), this system of high-speed trains connects the gateway cities and the various cities.
However, there are times when going to sea or land is inefficient while using an Earth transport route is unavailable. This usually is the case when it comes to operational frontline combat units. As such, Terran forces rely on their extensive fleet of logistic aircraft when transporting whole battle groups that must be in combat operations. Aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster and II-76 are used to carry material up to altitudes of 10,000 meters where they remain uncontested from the Grimm. These air transports are guarded by much of NATO's fighter jet fleet such as the F-35 Lighting, Eurofighter Typhoon, upgraded MIG-35s, and KF-21s. Able to skirt past the Kingdoms of Remnant and able to be refuelled in air, the Terran Airlines is the fastest mode of airborne transportation on Remnant.
