Over the sea

A group of fighters soared over the water toward Tokyo. Each fighter was emblazoned with a white star and the letters AMF. These were from the American AMF, dispatched from the USS Saratoga to assist in fighting Godzilla.

"You ready Stallion?" said one pilot.

"Ready as I'll ever be Inferno," said another. "My kid sister's in the city. I can't just wait and do nothing."

Another said, "She'd better appreciate that sentiment because Tokyo sounds completely FUBAR. And to think I thought those stories were exaggerating about Godzilla."

"Well that's why you always lost on poker night Tailspin," said Stallion.

"Screw you Tsunotori."

"Godzilla's trying to go back inland," Togashi said. "Akai, Emi, stop him."

Emi fired her maser from the left while Akai fired from the right. Godzilla turned. The two ducked behind cover while an infantry barrage distracted him. Godzilla let out a furious roar.

Emi growled. They'd had him here for ages. Why wasn't he going in the water?!

She got ready to fire again. Godzilla swung his head from side to side as his spines glowed.

"Everyone take cover!" said Togashi. "He's going for a wide one!"

Aoba pulled their maser behind a building just before Godzilla fired his atomic breath, sweeping it in a wide circle. The building Aoba and Emi were behind was blown apart by the passing beam, raining small chunks of rubble on their maser.

"AHHHHHH!"

Emi winced at the scream over the comms. Finally, it stopped.

Emi checked her viewing screen, then her scope. Godzilla was marching back inland.

"Togashi! You're ex-G-Force. Why is nothing working?!" someone said.

"I don't know, but we have to get him back to the water. Circle around and flank him. I'll go behind and hit him directly. Move!"

They rolled out. Aoba drove their maser around until they were parallel with Godzilla. Emi fired a beam past Godzilla's chest. Godzilla paused. Emi and Aoba hid while Akai and Ken fired their shots from closer to the bay.

Godzilla looked, but they'd all hidden. He advanced in their general direction while infantry rounds hit his leg, further attracting him forward.

Come on… thought Emi. Get over here.

As Godzilla crept forward. Togashi's maser darted from behind cover and shot his lgs. Godzilla fired his atomic breath, but Togashi's maser swerved out of the way with the speed and precision that only veteran G-Force members possessed.

Togashi's maser went for cover while Ken fired several shots passed Godzilla's head.

Godzilla looked from side to side. A maser darted out. Godzilla's atomic breath turned it into a melted husk at the center of a crater. Emi fired her shot past Godzilla's legs before their tank darted away.

The masers slowly led Godzila once again to the edge of the water, where once again, the Frontier Missiles hit him. And once again he stayed on land.

Emi and the other masers fired on him to keep him from going inland. Godzilla was about to fire another wide shot when a series of explosions went off on his back.

Several fighter jets flew over, firing on Godzilla then peeling off. Godzilla tried to blast them, but they deftly avoided his shots. One flew low over Emi, letting her see the "AMF" written on its wing.

They had air support. Finally!

The jets led Godzilla back the water, hitting him, then flying low over the waves. Godzilla blasted his atomic breath at them, then roared. Emi held her breath to see if he'd follow. Instead he turned inland.

Damn it!

The masers and jets worked together to try and lead him back to the water. Time and again they led him to the sea and time and again he didn't go.

They were now down to seven masers.

Mina handed a small girl to her parents.

"Thank you, Alien Queen! We were looking all over for her"

Despite her exhaustion, Mina smiled at them. "You're welcome."

"When I grow up, I wanna be a Hero like you!" the little girl said.

"Aww thank you!" Mina ruffled the girl's hair, then walked away feeling a little lighter.

Sadly, lightness faded as she took in the rest of the evacuation center. Everywhere she looked, she saw people drowning in terror and despair. Many had lost their homes or even families to that living calamity out there. They'd always assumed the Heroes would protect them, but now the Heroes had been utterly defeated.

Then there were the wounded, the dead, and the dying.

Mina sighed. She glanced at Ochako, who was helping pass out food. Mina moved to join her.

"Hey Ochako, how are you?"

Ochako shrugged. "I'm fine. They put me here to rest a little, so I'm doing this to pass the time. I have to do something to help before going back out."

Mina nodded. She joined Ochako in handing out the food. "This…this is worse than anything I've seen before. I knew that monster was worse than a regular villain but…I never expected this."

"Wish I could say the same. Sadly I knew this would end poorly. You don't spend four years in the AMF without adopting a healthy fear of Godzilla (unless you're Midori)."

Mina noted the reference to Ochako's friend, Midori again for future use. She nodded and said, "Big words coming from you. You're never scared of anything."

"That's not true. It's just that I chased him for three years. When you've done that, most bank robbers and purse snatchers don't seem scary anymore."

Mina glanced up at the smoke. "I guess you're right. Easy to not be scared of a regular villain when you fought a giant fire breathing lizar-"

"Radiation breathing."

Mina quirked an eyebrow.

Ochako's cheeks were even redder than normal. "Sorry. Old habits."

"Excuse me."

The two looked down. An exhausted looking ten-year-old boy looked up at them. "Miss Alien Queen and Uravity, will we die?"

"Nah," Mina said with the lightest smile she could muster. "You'll be fine. We'll keep you safe."

"What about those guys fighting it with the laser tanks? Can they really make it go away?"

"The AMF have done it before," Ochako said. "And right now, they have even more fighters on their way." She looked up with a distant smile. "If anyone can fight them off, its them."

Mina couldn't help but suspect Ochako was thinking of someone specifically…

Togashi fired at Godzilla's neck just as his went behind a corner and booked it. Godzilla's beam came through the building shortly afterwards, missing them.

Damn it. No matter what we do he won't go. What's going on? He's never like this. He relishes attacking someone who hits him.

Their numbers were depleting. They'd lost most of their 92s, and their 93's weren't looking great either. Their infantry had been decimated, and the air support forced to retreat and reload. Reinforcements were on the way, but that could take time.

Togashi and his masers were more careful now, taking shots only when they had to, giving Godzilla more leeway. They abandoned leading him to the water, instead keeping Godzilla away from places that hadn't been destroyed.

They may not be able lead him to the sea, but they could lead him away from civilians.

Near Tokyo, two groups of fighter jets converged. One was from the Japanese AMF and the other from the American AMF.

"Follow us," said who Stallion presumed to be the leader of the Japanese fighters. "Don't group up too close and watch for his breath. If you're too slow, it will hit you."

"Copy," said the American squadron leader.

"You guys ever flown in a dogfight before?"

"Yeah, but mostly against flying kaiju, nothing like Godzilla. There was this bird the size of a battleship-"

"That ugly one that kept flaring its nostrils? Near your southern border?" The man was on the verge of laughter.

"It was a lot tougher than it looked!" said Stallion.

"I doubt that. But beggars can't be choosers..."

Stallion was about to snark at him when he saw the smoke. "Holy shit."

They knew Godzilla had caused heavy damage but actually seeing it, seeing large portions of the city glowing bright red made it feel real.

They got closer. Stallion saw a large form moving amongst the carnage. There he was.

The Japanese commander came over the comms.

"The masers are pinned. On me."

The lead jet dove and fired a barrage of missiles, with the others on his tail. The missiles exploded on Godzilla's back. Godzilla looked up as they scattered.

"Wonder who drew the short straw?" said Stallion.

Spines glowing, Godzilla glared at Stallion and opened his mouth.

Stallion yanked the throttle. "GUESS IT'S ME!"

A blue beam blasted past Stallion's jet, coming way too close to incinerating him. The other jets distracted Godzilla while Stallion circled around and joined one of the Japanese jets. They dove fired at Godzilla then flew toward the harbor.

Godzilla fired at them both. They avoided the initial shot, but Godzilla's beam trailed after them. Stallion lowered his craft below the buildings, letting the beam scrape over the rooftops.

Once the beam stopped he pulled back up and looked back at the monster as the masers fired on it once again.

Emi and Ken fired into Godzilla's torso, getting him to turn away from an area with many civilians still present. Godzilla fired his atomic breath, but the two masers were already behind cover. Another maser popped out, but Godzilla made short work of it. Emi grimaced.

Aoba began to move their maser out to attack. Godzilla turned toward them. Aoba slammed the reverse and rushed back behind cover.

Godzilla continued turning, not taking a second look Emi and Aoba's spot.

That was close.

Emi and Aoba looked at each other. They exchanged nods. Aoba moved the maser forward again while Emi took aim. The moment they left cover, Godzilla whipped around, atomic breath already charged.

Emi was only able to get out a horrified yelp before their tank was incinerated.

"Emi…" said Toma.

Akai stared at the flaming wreckage that had been Emi and Aoba's tank. His hands shook. "Keep going. We've lost friends before. We have a job to do."

Toma hesitantly nodded and kept moving around Godzilla. They fired at Godzilla, drawing him away from populated areas.

Akai swiped his beam across Godzilla's chest and forearm. Godzilla fired at them, but missed. He chased after them.

Toma drove into a side street, but slammed the breaks. Akai was thrown against his restraints. "What the hell?"

He swiveled his scope around and- Oh shit.

The road was blocked by rubble.

Thump.

Thump.

Toma turned their tank around and headed for the next turn. Akai looked to his viewing screen.

"STOP!"

Godzilla was on the very street they'd been about to cross. They were trapped.

Godzilla grew closer. Just as he was about to reach the corner and see them, a beam of yellow lightning hit with his back. Godzilla turned, his spines flashing.

Toma floored it. Their tank zoomed into the intersection. Godzilla's tail slammed down in front of them. Toma swerved. The tail lifted and Toma gunned it. Their tank careened past the tail and down the nearest side street. That was close.

Akai took several deep breaths to still his racing heart.

They turned at the next corner, and passed what looked like an armored truck pulling a trailer with a maser turret attached. A Type 99 maser. Powerful, but difficult to drive. Best for battles where they can stay stationary and blast with impunity.

Not this one.

To use them now showed that the AMF was truly grasping at straws. As the tanks scattered, the jets came down and fired again.

Stallion watched Inferno disappear into the blue beam, leaving only a fireball. Another jet tried to avenge him, but it too was cut down. On top of that, they were all running low on ammo.

Damn he's a good shot.

Stallion flew another run at Godzilla, firing his last missile. Stallion circled around and used his bomber's small maser gun to shoot Godzilla in the nose. Stallion swept upwards again while a Japanese jet fired at Godzilla's back with its own maser. Moments later, Godzilla fired his atomic breath.

Another two masers hit him in the back. Godzilla turned and fired again, grazing Tailspin. His plane spiraled into a building and exploded. By now half the US force was gone with a third of the Japanese.

They tried to keep at it, but their masers quickly ran out of power. Soon, Stallion and the other fighters broke off, letting the Japanese jets guide them to the nearest air base.

Stallion took one last look at the city behind him. If this was difficult for the AMF's air support, then for the ground soldiers it must be a living Hell…

"Look out!"

"Take cover!"

The blast swept past the fleeing infantrymen, sending them flying. Hiro tumbled across the ground. Just as he stopped, his rocket launcher landed right next to him, nearly crushing his head. Shit!

Hiro got to his feet. Several of the others got up, while behind them several of their comrades lay on the ground groaning or screaming in pain. Hiro got up, grabbed one and pulled him to safety. He saw someone else with a glazed look pulling another person, murmuring their name over and over. His eyes trailed below said person's torso.

Hiro shuttered.

The medics performed first aid as the soldiers lay their wounded in a relatively undamaged corner to await evac. Two soldiers stayed to watch them while the rest continued on. They couldn't stop. They had a battle to fight.

To the bitter end.

"These masers of yours are all we have Dr. Randall," Colonel Schooler said. "How confident are you that they will work?"

"This is the latest armor piercing technology!" Doc Randall said with a mad gleam in his eye. "The pinnacle of anti-monster weaponry! They'll shoot a hole through a half-mile of solid granite if you want them to!"

That sounded promising. Maybe-

"That being said, it should work on Godzilla. I mean, his armor is like nothing else on this world…" said Doc, suddenly sounding a lot less confident. "It should hurt him at the very least. Make him change direction." He nodded. "Yeah. No, it'll work."

Right…

While Ota and the others spoke, the ground started to shake. They chalked it up to the Americans' bombardment. Kentaro and Doc Randall left to check on the masers, leaving Schooler with Ota.

"Lieutenant," Schooler said. "You've spent more time in the field on Godzilla's tail than anyone. Do you have any idea why he turned to Southeast Asia?"

"Honestly Colonel, I haven't a clue. This doesn't fit his pattern at all," Ota said.

Ota leaned over the map. "Something else has been bugging me sir," he pointed at it. "Once Godzilla reached Hanoi he changed heading. He's now on a beeline straight to Saigon. He's not even going around the mountains sir."

Ota looked back up. "…It's almost as if he's chasing something."

Schooler rubbed his chin. "This doesn't feel right. Maybe-"

Izuku woke up to someone nudging him. Blinking, Izuku noticed Zeni leaning over him.

"Izuku, we've landed. Can't have you sleep through the biggest fight of your life now can we?"

Izuku rubbed his eyes and yawned. He'd been dreaming of the battle of Vietnam way back in the nineteen-sixties. Odd. He looked around and sure enough, their transport planes had just landed in the outskirts of Tokyo.

Izuku's heart pounded. It was time. Soon they were in their masers and headed toward the battle. AMF on the sidewalks pointed and stared. Izuku couldn't hear them, but he had an idea of what they were saying.

G-Force had arrived.

Izuku has arrived! Hope you enjoyed this look into the meatgrinder that a prolonged battle with Godzilla is!

Meanwhile a warning: Next chapter will almost certainly be late. I have plans for the weekend that will take me away from the keyboard. However, I will post it as soon as I can. See you then!

Fun Fact: That scene with Izuku was supposed to be the start of next chapter, but I felt you guys deserved a bit of him now.
