I hated flying. In fact I had never flown alone before. Something about being thousands of feet up in the air never sat well with me. I chewed on some stale peanuts and tried to tune out the crying babies with my ear buds. I let my mind drift and began to think about my dad. When I younger we would fly to Boston once a season. My dad had lived there after high school and said there was nothing like Boston in the fall. He was a huge Red Sox fan. I didn't really care much about baseball but I loved spending time with Ray. I remember this one time I must have been eight or nine. We had to stay at a different hotel than usual because everything was booked. The Yankees were playing the Sox in the American League Championships. A friend had given Ray the tickets to return a favor. He was so excited. It was game five and the city was packed to the brim. The stadium was electric. Thousands of people. The Red Sox won and the place was bananas. Drunk fans everywhere. The Yankee fans were angry, the Sox fans were bragging. There was so much going on in every direction. I remember grasping onto Ray's hand as we tried to leave and the fear in the pit of my stomach were the crowd separated us. I remember screaming out his name as I was moved forward into a sea of people. In the distance I could hear Ray calling out for me. This went on for a few minutes until he pushed through the rowdy crowd and scooped me up into his arms while I cried into the nape of his neck. I had never felt that kind of fear again… until today.
I could smell her even before I saw her. The expensive musk of a cheap woman in an expensive suit. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and my stomach dropped into my feet. It couldn't be her. There is no way she could know I was here.
"Hello, Ana." She cooed as she sat in the seat beside mine. "Coach? Darling, never sit in coach. It's beneath even a little shit like you." Her snide comment was meant to cut me but it barely stung. This woman was a monster.
"Elena, the only thing beneath me is you." She snarled at me through her over plumped lips and veneered teeth. If she wouldn't have been botoxed within an inch of her life her brow would have furrowed. Rage began to build in my body. This horrible woman was the cause of so much pain. All the games and manipulations, lies and secrets. She spent years fucking up Christian and now she was hell bent on destroying his happiness. I would not allow it. Not while I had breath in my body. "Your time's up, Elena. We know that it's you. We know that you and Sawyer and Hyde have been working together." She began to laugh loudly, it was more of a cackle. She wrapped her manicured hand around my wrist and pulled me close. Her voice was soft, a chilling whisper as she spoke.
"You foolish, foolish girl. We have been ten steps ahead of you this whole time. How do you think I knew you were here in this very seat at this very moment? Sawyer bugged Grace's house the moment you all moved in. I must say your bedroom has been very quiet lately. Maybe Christian has lost interest in you? I can't imagine a simply, homely, vanilla girl like you really giving him what he craves. What he needs."
"You've been listening? You bitch, you fucking bitch. Why? Why are you doing this? What could you possibly gain?"
"Christian is mine, always has been always will be. If you think I am going to allow a little piece of nothing like to you snatch him away from me, think again." A flight attendant and several passengers walk past and I have to wait before I can unleash my whispered retort to her insanity.
"Christian was never yours you dirty old hag. You groomed him, you raped him you tortured him but he was never are a sad excuse for a woman and soon the whole world is going to know what kind of monster you are."
"Fuck you, you little cunt. Christian needed me. She was a snot nosed little punk would couldn't be touched. And I carved him from stone. He is the man he is today because of me. I made him truly untouchable. And i am proving to him now that I am the only one who can every really touch him. He thinks he is control but it's really me. It has always been me and it will alway be me. Now get your sorry ass up, we are getting off this plane."
"I am not going anywhere with you. You're outta your goddamn mind." I pulled my wrist out of her grasp and resisted the urge to scratch her eyes out. I pulled out my phone and started to text Taylor.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you. Olivia is at this very moment in Jack Hyde's possession. One text from me and that little girl will know what fear truly is. Tell me again how you're not getting off this plane?" My entire body went cold and tears formed in my eyes. Jack had Olivia. How? How was it possible? Christian would never allow such a thing to happen. Mybe Ryan took her or Sawyer but how? I wanted to vomit. Oliva would be terrified. All that she had been through, the story that Grace had told us about Olivia's past. My mind began to race. "I can see that you're upset, Ana. It looks like your time is up."
"You callous bitch. Christian is going to…"
"Christian is going to do nothing. Since hooking up with you he has almost all of his edge. All of his common sense and years of training all out the window. I wish I could be there to see the look on his face when he realizes that we have you. After all this failed attempts to keep you safe. All his boasting and bravado. This is what is going to happen...we are getting off this plane. I have already paid off two of the attendants. You are going to go quietly. Not a peep. Any struggle on your part will directly impact Olivia. You are going to leave your bags and your phone here." I felt sick. I wanted to throw up but I had to stay calm. I had to breathe and stay focused. She stood over me now, a fake smile on her face. I unbuckled my seatbelt and stood beside her dropping my phone on my now empty seat.
"Good little pet."
It took three grown men to pull me back from Sawyer. I had beaten him within an inch of his life and had zero regrets. The new team had some kind of an underground doctor to deal with messes like this. They made a few calls and Sawyer was gone. I found out later that he was fine. A broken cheek bone, a concussion. They questioned him and got a few details about Hyde's plan. He wanted money. That is what this all boiled down to and so did Elena - Linc was planning to leave her and she would be left with nothing now that I had pulled out as her investor.. Twenty million each in exchange for Ana. Sawer told us how he bugged the house and was feeding info to Hyde for weeks. He didn't know much of their plan beyond that. Only that he would get two million dollars for his work. Ryan was recovering from the experience but assured Taylor that he had no idea what Sawyer was up to, while we both believed him we decided it would be best if he stayed under surveillance until everything got straightened out. A team swept the house for all the bugs that Sawyer had planted and another team scrubbed the basement clean. Now it was a waiting game. When was Hyde going to reach out? I had the money ready to go. I could wire it or I could have cash within the hour. Twenty million wouldn't be enough to keep either one of them safe. I would spend my life and every last cent until I found them. I gathered my family and let them know what was going on with Sawyer and Hyde. I told them that Ana was taken and that I was going to get her back. Grace and Carrick decided that the best thing they could do was take Oliva, Mia and Grace away for a few days. I tried to send Taylor with them but he refused. He put a crew of four men on their detail and they were staying with a friend of Carrick's - a diplomat with a heavy security team of his own. Kate and Ethan went to her father's which was a fortress. It was a relief having them in the care of other people. All these months trying to keep everyone around me safe, I didn't realize what a weight it was to bare, until the weight was lifted. This really was all my fault. I had no idea that Sawyer had feeling for Lelia. I had assigned him to her security detail but I was clueless that they talked. The the fact that sawyer said that he was in love with her blew my mind. I almost could have understood if he would have come just for me - but to go after Ana and my family was unforgivable. He was the connection between Elena and Jack of that I was sure. All the fragments finally coming together, only it was too late. I was totally out of control and there was not a damn thing I could do about it. And just like Lelia, Ana stood to lose the most.
Hours passed and the idea that Ana was in Hyde's hands was killing me. Every minute was agonizing. What was he doing to her. I knew she was scared, it was as if I could feel her fear. I knew that he was taunting me with each and every passing minute. I kept replaying the video he had made of her in New York over and over in my head. They way that he slapped her across the face. How he tore her dress. The panic and fear in her eyes as she ran away. Over and over and over again, my mind was racing.
"Hello, Christian." Hyde's voice came through my phone and I could barely contain my rage.
"We have your girl. Such a pretty young thing. Slim body, pale skin. She smells like heaven."
"Where the fuck are you Hyde. I am going to kill you." He laughed.
"You have no leverage here, Grey and I have it all. So please spare me the false bravado. You are going to do exactly what I say. Or Ana dies…After I have had my fun with her. And she looks very, very fun."
"You won't touch a hair on her head."
"On her head… but she has hair in other places…. Meet me at Escala. Your red room. Come alone."
