Day 22: Flygon

(BGM: Meteor Falls from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald)

There are three main dragon types to chose from in the Hoenn Region. There's Altaria, a graceful Dragon-Flying type who can Mega Evolve into a Dragon-Fairy type, and just looks absolutely adorable. There's Salamence, one of Generation 3's two pseudo-legendaries that knows how to tear stuff up, even more so when he Mega Evolves. And then there's Flygon, the Dragon-Ground type with a cool design and a Pokemon that really deserves a Mega Evolution…maybe in Legends Z-A?

All three of them are among my favorite Pokemon in the franchise's third generation, but as for my favorite one…well, you've all seen my honorable mentions.

I'm a Fly Guy all the way!

(Insert Flygon cry here)

(BGM: Battle! Hoenn Elite Four from the anime)

I know it may seem weird that I'm choosing the Dragon that has no Mega as my favorite Hoenn dragon, but to those of you who don't see the bigger picture, hear me out.

Altaria and Salamence are good Pokemon, yes, but while they have a total of four weaknesses, Flygon only has three, with Flygon being neutral to Rock-Type attacks. Furthermore, he still avoids Ground-Type attacks like Altaria and Salamance thanks to him having the ability Levitate which, while not the best Pokemon to have the ability, can certainly come in handy especially during double battles.

Now let's talk about that design of Flygon's, which just screams aerodynamic! Seriously, I love the shades of green that they use along with red on the outline of his wings, eyes, and the tip of his tail. It's aesthetically pleasing to me and the shape of his body along with the fact that his eyes look like a pair of flight goggles makes him look like a total aviator. There's no other way to say this, but Flygon looks like a BAMF.

As for stats, Flygon has 100 speed, pretty fast compared to most other Hoenn Pokemon, 100 attack, and 80 in the remaining four stats, making Flygon a very balanced fighter…a balanced fighter with one of the most diverse movepools of any Generation 3 Pokemon.

It can already learn some pretty strong moves naturally such as Earth Power, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush, Bug Buzz, and Boomburst, but it can even have some of its moves from its days as a Trapinch and a Vibrava such as Crunch, Dig, Fissure, and Dragon Dance to boost its speed and attack.

And then there's the moves he can learn through TMs. We've got usual suspects like Aerial Ace and Rock Slide, but then there's Air Slash, Fire and Thunder Punch, Dragon Pulse, Fly, Heatwave, Flamethrower, Hyper Beam, Draco Meteor, Solar Beam, Dual Wingbeat, Giga Drain, Alluring Voice, Psychic Noise, Breaking Swipe…Good lord!

Usually Psychic type Pokemon are the ones to have the most diverse movepools, but Flygon puts most Psychic types to shame! Guess that's why he's called the Mystic Pokemon; he's not a Psychic type, but he might as well be.

I know it's a short segment this time around, but I really don't have much else that needs to be said about Flygon. He's an awesome and underrated Hoenn Pokemon and one that I can recommend for any team, especially if you're looking for a good Ground type.
