Chapter 149: Green Lights

Jamie walks into the kitchen from the garage to see his wife looking in the fridge and his daughter in her carrier on the kitchen island counter "Hey!" He happily greets as he makes a beeline straight for Jessie "There's my girl!"

Eddie lifts her head, looks over and smirks "I remember when I used to be your girl."

Jamie glances at his wife as he lifts Jessie up and into his arms "I can have more then one girl." Jamie arrogantly defends.

Eddie stands up, closes the fridge and places her hands on her hips "Okay sure but which one of us do you love more?"

Jamie's mouth drops open as he stares aghast at the gall of his wife "Well Jessie of course." He then easily replies trying to get under her skin "I mean it's not even a close race – she's totally replaced you."

"Okay good just checking." Eddie tosses back not willing to let him one up her "Now I don't feel so bad that she's totally replaced you for me too."

There is a moment as husband and wife stare at one another before they both break and let out a laugh.

"I love you." Jamie promises as he leans over and gives his wife a super quick kiss on her cheek.

"Love you too." Eddie returns as she turns and heads back to open the fridge.

"How did the appointment go?" Jamie inquires.

"She was a real trooper." Eddie replies as she again begins to survey the contents of the fridge "Didn't even flinch when the doctor gave her her shot."

Jamie looks down at his daughter mighty impressed "Are you a brave girl just like your Mommy? I'm so proud of you!" he adds before peppering her with kisses while Eddie pulls out a container of left overs from the fridge.

She turns back to the kitchen island and smiles a little at the site of her husband and daughter "Didn't kiss me like that." She once again needles.

Jamie stops kissing his daughter and turns to look at his wife "Speaking of kissing…"

"Yyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeess?" Eddie sweetly drawls out knowing exactly what he is about to ask.

"What's the verdict?" Jamie prompts.

"What verdict?" Eddie innocently queries.

Jamie looks at his wife and a cross between a smirk and a frown appears as they start their game all over again "Oh you know what verdict I'm talking about Eddie." he counters.

"Do I?" Eddie deflects.

"Jessie wasn't the only one with a doctor's appointment today." Jamie reminds his wife.

"That's right she wasn't." Eddie confirms but she doesn't offer anything more so as a silence befalls the couple, Jamie's need for a real answer over playing games begins to win out.

"Well?" He finally prompts.

"Well what?" Eddie counters.

"Did we get the all clear?" Jamie questions.

"All clear on what?" Eddie inquires back – she wasn't done, she was going to make him say it…

Growing super frustrated, Jamie places Jessie back in her carrier and gently places his hands over her ears "Sex Eddie!" He finally clarifies "Did we get the all clear for sex?"

Eddie tries not to break out into laughter at his move, instead she forces herself to present an air of uncaring "Oh right, that." She dismissively replies like it had completely slipped her mind "Now what did the doctor say again..." she ponders as she taps her finger to her lips deep in thought "Hmmmmm..."

Having had more then enough of her games Jamie seriously warns "Eddie…" in a tone he knows she won't miss.

"Fine!" Eddie relents in laughter "Yes. We got the green light."

A huge grin breaks out onto Jamie's face.

"Yeah knew that would make your day." Eddie tosses at him.

Jamie turns his head to look at his daughter "You're going to go to bed early tonight right?" He eagerly prompts "And sleep a really long time?" he hopefully adds.

Eddie walks over and pats her husband on the shoulder "Yeah, you keep believing that." She states before an involuntary yawn comes over her "And remember, if she's asleep, I'm asleep so that's not really going to jive well with this plan of yours."

Jamie sighs in defeat "I guess not."

Just then the front door opens and Mia comes barreling in with a piece of paper in hand "Good you're both here." She greets as she starts to make a beeline for her Aunt and Uncle while Rosa comes hurrying inside next.

"Mia!" Rosa quickly admonishes "Give me that back!"

Jamie and Eddie immediately raise an eyebrow.

"No!" Mia tosses back as she walks up to the kitchen "The light was green!" She insists as she slaps the piece of yellow paper down on the counter in front of Jamie and Eddie "We both saw it." She adds before looking up at her Aunt "Can you make this go away?"

Curious, Eddie reaches over and picks up the piece of paper. She reads then looks up in surprise at Mia and then over to Rosa "This is a ticket for running a red light."

"The light was green!" Mia emphatically insists with a slight stomp of her foot as Jamie reaches a hand out to his wife requesting the ticket.

"It's no big deal." Rosa tries to deflect as she hurries forward and goes to reach for the ticket but Jamie pulls it out of her reach in rejection.

"Was the light green?" Jamie prompts.

"I think so... maybe…" Rosa hesitates "I'm not sure."

"It was green!" Mia insists again.

Jamie and Eddie sigh.

"I can look into it if you want…" Jamie offers "Maybe get the traffic cam footage to prove one way or the other but we can't just outright fix the ticket – those days are gone."

A look of surprise appears on Rosa face "You can get the traffic cam foot…" She begins to say but then realization dawns on her "Of course you can get the traffic cam footage."

"Um…" Eddie slowly chimes in "Just curious but what happened to the amber light?"

Rosa sighs and shrugs "I don't know. The light was green and then suddenly it was red. There was no amber."

Eddie's face scrunches up "So it was malfunctioning?"

"I don't know." Rosa replies.

"This happened pretty close to here." Jamie points out as he continues to look at the ticket "Wouldn't be much to just take a quick trip over and check it out myself."

Eddie turns to look at her husband and scoffs "Not without me you're not!"

Jamie turns to look at his wife but points a finger at his daughter "And what about her?"

"Well she's already in her car seat." Eddie points out.

"So what?" Jamie challenges "Now were taking her on calls with us?"

"It's not a call." Eddie dismisses "It's just a quick trip around the corner to gather intel. Come on, it will be fun!"

Jamie eyes his wife "You just really miss being out there in the thick of it huh?" He deduces.

"Yes." Eddie desperately pleads "Please take me with you." She begs causing Jamie to let out a chuckle.

"We can watch her you know." Rosa chimes in "No need to take her with you."

Jamie and Eddie both turn to look at and study Rosa.

"I don't know…" Eddie hesitates before leaning slightly towards her husband next to her "Do we trust her?"

"The background check did come back clean." Jamie offers.

Rosa rolls her eyes "Are you both done yet?"

Grins breaks out onto Jamie and Eddie's faces "Okay yes." Eddie relents "Thank you that would be great."

Rosa nods in acceptance so Jamie and Eddie turn and head for the door to the garage.

Jamie opens it and walks down the stairs with Eddie following "So what do ya want to take?" Jamie asks of his wife behind him.

"Oh The Porsche!" Eddie immediately replies.

Jamie abruptly stops short right after stepping off the last step and sighs "Which one?" He presses "There are 2."

"THE Porsche!" Eddie repeats as she pushes past her husband and she makes a beeline for her first baby "It's not that hard to figure out Jamie. We never call the SUV The Porsche, we call it the SUV so when I say The Porsche, I mean THE Porsche!"

"Okay!" Jamie relents as he starts walking again "You want to drive?"

"Do I want too? Yes." Eddie replies as she makes her way to the passenger's side "Should I? No."

Jamie looks at his wife in confusion.

"Do you know how long it's been since I've been able to drive this car?" Eddie points out "If I get behind that wheel right now I can't guarantee I won't press a little bit too hard on that gas and end up on the open road instead of us just going around the corner."

"Ah." Jamie laughs as he heads for the driver's side "Rosa might have to send out a search party for us then for us abandoning our daughter."

"At least for an hour or two." Eddie cheekily throws back.

….

"Okay there it is." Jamie states as he turns The Porsche into a parking lot near the questionable stop light and stops.

He puts the car in park as both he and Eddie peer out the windshield to watch the light.

They watch as the light goes from green straight to red with no amber in between. A moment later they both turn their heads when they hear sirens. They see an RMP whip out of no where and pull a car that was in the intersection when the light went from green to red over.

Both Jamie and Eddie narrow their eyes at what they are seeing.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Eddie inquires.

"Yup." Jamie confirms "But let's make sure."

So for the next 20 minutes Jamie and Eddie watch as the same RMP stops 3 more cars.

"Okay this is wrong." Eddie finally concludes as she lowers her cellphone from recording "Those officers should be reporting this as a malfunctioning traffic light, not sitting in wait and slapping unsuspecting drivers with tickets."

"Not to mention how dangerous it is for a light to go from green to red on a dime." Jamie adds.

"So how do we play this?" Eddie inquires.

In response, Jamie starts the car "Guess it's time I get stopped for running a red light."

"And if that doesn't work?" Eddie inquires.

"Then I guess The Police Commissioner's office will be getting an anonymous tip." Jamie replies.

"Really won't be anonymous if the officers in question know they stopped you first…" Eddie points out "A toddler could connect the dots on that one."

Jamie shifts into drive as he turns his head to look at his wife offering her a smug look "As long as it's not a newborn." He tosses back before pulling the car back out onto the street.

He times is correctly and manages to be in the intersection as the light goes from green to red so right on cue, the RMP whips out behind them with flashing lights and sirens.

Jamie obediently pulls over and lowers his window. He watches as an officer walks over and the second he gets to the window Jamie says "What seems to be the problem officer?"

"Sir." The officer very seriously states "You ran a red light."

"When I entered the intersection…" Jamie calmly counters …the light was green. It only turned red once I was in the middle of the intersection instead of turning to amber first and then red."

Suddenly Eddie leans over towards the driver's side of the car holding her phone out "Did you want to see a replay?"

The officer gets a very unhappy look on his face at being challenged "License and registration." He demands.

"Sure." Jamie easily agrees as he pull his NYPD ID and shield out and holds it up to the officer "Will this do?"

Immediately the officer gets a very uncomfortable look on his face "Oh um sir…" he awkwardly greets.

"Have you reported this light as malfunctioning?" Jamie inquires.

"Of course!" The officer immediately defends.

"When?" Jamie presses.

"Um…"

"Officer Lewin…" Jamie commands as he reads the name plate "…show me your memo book."

Cringing, the officer reluctantly pulls out his NYPD notebook and hands it over.

Jamie takes it and begins flipping through it "You have nothing in here noting you reported this light as malfunctioning."

"Oh there isn't?" Lewin nervously states "I swear I wrote it down."

"Maybe it's in his partner's book." Eddie helpfully interjects.

"Yes!" Lewin immediately agrees.

"If he's done running my plates and figuring out who we are." Eddie instructs to the officer "Maybe get him over here."

Lewin looks at Eddie but then slowly shifts his eyes back to Jamie.

"Oh don't look at him." Eddie warns as she produces and shows her Sergeant shield.

The officer gulps at its sight then looks back over to the RMP and waves his partner over.

….

"So nothing in this book either." Jamie notes as he flips it closed "Show me your ticket books."

Reluctantly the officers hand them over. Jamie hands one to Eddie while he flips through the other.

"Wow." Eddie notes with a hint of sarcasm "You've been busy little beavers. Have you seriously been sitting at this light handing out tickets for 2 days?"

"Section 9 of the patrol guide…" Jamie begins "…clearly states that for safety reasons any malfunctions with traffic lights must be reported within 1 hour of discovery. Who is your commanding officer?"

"Sergeant Willis." Lewin replies "But good luck with that." The officer adds with a sigh "Who do you think told us to sit here."

Jamie and Eddie both look at the officers in surprise then turn to look at one another with unimpressed expressions.

"Look." Lewin adds "I understand that you're a Sergeant and you're a Lieutenant, so no disrespect intended here but we're just following orders."

Eddie unhappily thrusts the book in her hands back towards Jamie "Yeah well we'll see about that." She states as Jamie hands both books back to the officer.

"Thank you." Lewin accepts as he takes them "And you are obviously free to go."

"Ya think?" Eddie tosses back while Jamie gives his wife a slight side glance before looking back at the officers.

"Well I am ordering you to report this light as malfunctioning – forthwith." Jamie commands "And stop issuing tickets."

"But…" Lewin hesitantly begins to protest

"And if Sergeant Willis has a problem with that, he is free to contact me." Jamie adds. "Lieutenant Reagan – 5-4 precinct."

Lewin sucks in a breath of air "Okay…"

"Dismissed." Jamie adds.

At hearing that Lewin and his partner simply turn and head back to their RMP while Jamie and Eddie silently sit there a moment both processing everything that just happened.

"You realize you just stepped all over their commanding officers right?" Eddie finally states.

"Yup." Jamie simply replies before starting the car and shifting into drive "But someone has to stand up for the people that were wrongly ticketed."

Eddie looks over at her husband and a small smile creeps up on her face "Just like old times there huh partner?"

Jamie glances at wife "Yup." He repeats before pulling out and driving away and as he does Eddie can't help but feel a bit nostalgic and a warm, tingly feeling washes over her.

"Hey Jamie?" She prompts.

"Yeah?" Jamie replies as he glances at this wife to see her biting her lower lip in that way that usually only means one thing…

"We also have a green light." She suggestively reminds him.

Slowly a big grin appears on Jamie's face "Well then." He quips as he presses a little harder on the gas.
