It's 1870, Paris. The opera "Hannibal" is being staged at the Opera Populaire and at the moment
rehearsal is going. The lead role is, of course, played by the opera's prima donna, Carlotta, and everything goes smoothly until the arrival of the new opera managers Firmin and André, as well as the new patron of the opera Raoul de Chagny. He is spotted and recognised by the young corde ballet dancer Christine Daae. Everyone is announced the news of the new managers and patron, but the moment Raoul walks past Christine and Meg, she hoped he would recognise her, but Raoul didn't - he didn't even see her and Christine didn't like that and was even worried - that maybe Raoul was completely changed and was no longer the good old Raoul from her childhood that she knew. And she was right. When Christine recovered from all these thoughts and tuned in for the rehearsal, it was again continued and finished, but at the end of it, Carlotta makes a scene again and wants to go to leave the opera, but Firmin and André persuade her to stay and sing the main
opera. After much deliberation, she agrees and begins to sing, but at that moment someone upstairs at the scenery fastenings, pulls open a string so that one of the hanging scenery would fall
right on top of Carlotta. When this happens and the decoration does fall on Carlotta,
without injuring her, she says:
"Excuse me, gentlemen, but I can't stay here any longer. Someone keeps stopping me from performing here and it's been going on for the last three years that I've been here. I've had enough, I'm leaving!"
Carlotta turned and left, taking her husband Piandji and her maids with her. Firmin and
André are very excited and don't want her to go because the premiere is tonight and to find her replacement so fast is impossible, but here comes Madame Giry to the rescue.
"Gentlemen, I can help you. Christine Daaé can sing in Carlotta's place. She has studied
opera singing and she sings very well indeed." said Madame Giry.
Firmin and André looked at Christine incredulously, but decided to give her a chance and let her go tonight, but first they wanted to hear her sing because they wanted to see for themselves, so they said:
"If you say so, then please let her try. We don't mind, because anything will do at the moment.
Miss Daae, would you sing for us? We would like to hear you singing. Oh yes, who are you
taught you to sing? What is the name of your teacher?"
Christine was pleasantly surprised, but happy that she now had such an opportunity to show and
to prove herself as a young rising opera singer. She replied:
"I'm sorry, but I can't say because I don't know his name."
Then she reached the front, the conductor started playing the same aria and she started singing. Her voice sounded so beautiful and easy, and all around were so astonished and amazed, yet they listened to her "Angel's voice". And so the evening and the premiere came and it was Christine's turn to sing aria. When Christine was on stage, she was so happy that nothing could overshadow it all or spoil it. At that moment, someone looked at her from the balcony and finally recognised her - it was Raoul. He had indeed recognised "Little Lottie" from his childhood days when they were both children. Christine's beautiful singing was also heard by someone downstairs in the opera cellars, someone who taught her and he was very pleased with the result. So pleased that he left in Christine's dressing room a red rose tied with a black ribbon. When the premiere was over, Christine went to her dressing room, where she finally tried to relax, but someone was already knocking at the door with flowers congratulating her on her sensational debut. Christine reluctantly got up from the chair where she sat and walked to the door and opened it. She was surprised to see Raoul, because she hadn't expected him to come straight out and congratulate her, as she thought he would be busy with his patron and the opera things. She let him into the room so as not to press Raoul the crowd of wellwishers outside the door, she was really glad to see him, but still did not forget the event of that morning. Raoul, giving her the flowers, began:
"Christine, you were wonderful, just wonderful. You were the star of the evening, my dear. What would you say, if we went out to dinner?"
Christine was still not over the moment of surprise, but she was gradually recovering from
and took the flowers from Raoul, put them on the table and said:
"Thank you, Raoul. I didn't expect you to come and congratulate me, but thank you for this surprise and if you don't mind, I'd like to rest, so I'll need to refuse your propoal."
However, Raoul was not happy to be refused and continued:
"No, Christine, we have to go to dinner because we have to celebrate this, we have to celebrate your debut this evening. I'll go and prepare a carriage for us, but in the meantime you change and wait for me. I will soon be back."
Christine was about to tell him again that she wasn't going anywhere, but she couldn't say anything because Raoul had already left. When Raoul went outside, someone locked the door, trapping Christine and Madame Giry saw it and understood everything. Meanwhile, Christine changed her clothes and when she was ready, someone started singing and called her the Angel of Music. Christine realised that it was her teacher, her Angel of Music. She turned to the big mirror and slowly saw that someone was standing there and it was none other than him who wanted to take her to his home which was under the Opera House. Christine walked slowly to the mirror, it opened and Eric gave her his hand to take her with him...
