Prompt #3 Can't stand being around you.

The Best of Enemies

The sun was high in the sky, beating down on Dennis Nedry and Robert Muldoon. They got some respite from the constant heat when they walked through the jungles of Isla Sorna. However, their current predicament and the jungle canopy didn't make them immune to their ongoing animosity. In fact, it seemed to intensify it.

For starters, Muldoon still believed Nedry had snuck back to Isla Nublar on purpose. He was working with the Biosyn team to remove Muldoon, of course. It was so obvious! Nedry's claims of "helping InGen" was just a smokescreen for what Biosyn had planned on doing all along. Take over InGen and Jurassic Park, or whatever else Nedry claimed. Then Nedry kept insisting that he had left Biosyn for good. He also created tall tales that Henry Wu had joined Biosyn. Now that was the cherry on top! Of all the lies that spilled forth from him, this was the worst one. Wu was loyal, genuine, and a true team-player. Nedry was the complete opposite: a traitor, phony, aloof, and arrogant.

The only person who paid him any attention was Ian Malcolm. Why did Malcolm listen to him anyway? Muldoon wondered. If anyone should know that Nedry was lying out of his ass, it would be Ian Malcolm. That was a mystery to Muldoon and the rest of the InGen staff. As Muldoon told Nedry the night the Biosyn team abducted them: you lie like you breathe air. The more he lied, the more it made Muldoon want to drink an entire bottle of whiskey. It would help him drown out Nedry's nonsense.

The worst part? Only one week had passed since the Biosyn team had kidnapped both men from Isla Nublar and brought them to Isla Sorna. They left Nedry and Muldoon stranded on the island—and there was no telling of how long they would be stuck here. Muldoon wished there was a way to contact the control room so that he could tell Ray Arnold where they were. He imagined that Arnold must be searching for them and wondering where the hell they disappeared to.

Now they were going in circles with no end in sight. To keep the peace (or try to), they had agreed to work together to get off the island. Their short-lived truce was about to expire…

"What the hell should we do?" Muldoon wondered aloud as he stopped to lean against a tree. He knew the answer, but the exhaustion, extreme heat, and the lack of adequate food and water weighed on him.

Nedry stopped walking and shot a glare in Muldoon's direction. "Get off this damn island, genius."

Muldoon closed his eyes to maintain his patience. If he didn't, he'd be tempted to punch Nedry in the face. That's the answer, he thought, break his bloody jaw, so that he can't talk. Muldoon shuddered as he opened his eyes when he realized the severity of his hatred towards Nedry. He usually prided himself on maintaining a stoic persona, but Nedry always managed to get under his skin. He brought out the worst in him, and Muldoon was not proud of that fact. He resolved to respond to Nedry, although he wanted to ignore him.

"Don't you think I bloody know that?"

"I know you don't bloody know that. I've a knack for stating the obvious, while you're trying to take a nap standing up."

"I'm not napping."

"Then what're you doing?"

"Closing my eyes and pretending you don't exist."

"Well, your eyes are wide open now and I'm not going anywhere. Tough tootsie for you."

Nedry stood five feet away from him. Muldoon tried to distract himself as he watched the tropical birds fly around the trees. The colors were vivid and bright and reminded him of precious jewels. The birds flew around and disappeared into the canopy in a matter of moments. Muldoon was forced to face Nedry now.

"I can't stand being around you. You're a bloody sociopath in every sense of the word." It was all he could bring himself to say.

Of course, Nedry had to have the last word. "Feeling's mutual, you self-righteous prick."
