Chapter 4 – Frank Finds Out
Over an hour after Jamie and Danny were initially grabbed, Detective Abigail Baker knocked on the Police Commissioner's door. "Come in," came a stern but soft voice from inside. Baker opened the door and headed in. Frank Reagan was sitting at his desk, getting some paperwork done. He looked up when she came up to his desk. "Yes, Baker?" he asked, noticing the look on her face.
Baker hesitated for a moment before answering him. "Sir, I've received a call from the 12th Precinct and apparently Officer Reagan never reported in for his shift this morning and hasn't called in sick. They've tried calling him, but it goes straight to voicemail. I also received a call from the 5-4 saying that Detective Reagan disappeared after leaving and saying he'd be back. It's been over an hour and he hasn't been back and he's not answering his phone," she informed him.
Frank let what she said sink in, pursing his lips. "Baker, if I kept track of every officer who didn't show up to their shift, I wouldn't be able to get work done," he told her. He had told himself long ago that he wouldn't show any favoritism with anybody, whether they were his sons or not. When they were all at work, he was their PC and they were just two officers under his command.
"I know that sir, but Officer Janko was told to check out Officer Reagan's apartment. She found his car was still there, but no one was answering his door. She was able to get the super to let her in and the place was empty, including his work bag. And then Detective Baez tracked down Detective Reagan's phone and they found his car next to an abandoned house; his phone and his gun were in the glove box but he wasn't anywhere to be found," she said, her hands folded in front of her. She saw the worried father come through for a second before the stoic PC took over again.
"Are we sure they're off the grid? No one knows where they're at?" he asked her, fearing the answer.
"Yes, I'm afraid so, sir."
Frank took a deep breath before slowly letting it out. He wasn't quite sure what to do; the father in him was worried about where his boys were and wanted every officer in the city out looking for them, but the PC in him knew that wasn't realistic. 'Where could they have gone?' he wondered.
Baker could see the internal debate he was having and decided to make the decision for him. "Sir, with all due respect, I know you don't want to show favoritism with your officers, but with a situation like this, you aren't just their PC…you're their father. Your sons seem to be missing and they may need all the help they can get," she told him.
Frank thought about what she said, knowing she was right (she usually was). "Call the 5-4 and tell them to have Detective Baez give me a call, and same with Officer Janko. I want to know what they know, from their own words," he instructed her.
"Yes, sir," Baker replied, leaving the officer and closing the door behind her.
Frank sat with his hands folded on his desk. There's no way he'd be able to get back to what he was doing before Baker told him the bad news. His mind was racing, wondering what could have happened to his sons, hoping that it was a bad coincidence and that they were both safe and okay…and if they were, they'd be hearing it from him. He sat and waited for the phone to ring, praying it'd be Danny or Jamie on the other end to explain themselves and not their partners to explain their disappearances. He didn't have to wait long before the first call came, which he quickly answered. "Reagan," he said into the receiver.
"Hello sir, this is Officer Janko," came the reply.
Frank closed his eyes and quietly let out a sigh. He didn't want the young officer to hear the disappointment in his voice when he heard her instead of his youngest. "Hello, Officer Janko. I would like to hear from your perspective about his morning when Officer Reagan never showed up for his shift." He listened as she told him everything that happened; how she showed up to the Precinct and found it surprising when she didn't see Jamie's Chevelle out in the parking lot…he always got there before she did. It wasn't until he didn't show up for roll call that she started getting worried; she even asked her CO if Jamie had called in sick but was told he didn't get any calls from Reagan. After about a half hour of still nothing, her sergeant gave her permission to go to his apartment, just in case something had happened and he wasn't able to get to his phone for whatever reason. When she got there, she found his car in the parking lot, but no one would come to the door when she started pounding on it. She was able to find the super in the front office and asked him if he could open the door for her, which, after some persuading, he did. She checked the whole place and didn't see anything amiss; his phone, keys, and work duffle were all gone. She also noticed how a mess the bathroom seemed to be, like he had taken a shower that morning, went off to work, but disappeared before getting to his car. She then asked if the building had any security cameras; her hopes went up when she was told yes, but they were quickly dashed when the super told her that he was in the process of getting new ones so none of them were working at the moment. She thanked him and left to go back to the 1-2 and reported everything that she found out to her CO, who then informed 1PP. "Thank you Officer Janko, I appreciate it. I'll let you know if I find anything out," he told her before hanging up.
Baker had been holding a call from Detective Baez, knowing he was on the phone with Janko. When she saw that he had hung up, she transferred the call to his office. "This is Detective Baez sir. I was told you wanted to talk to me?" the 1st grade detective said over the phone when her PC answered.
Frank gave a soft, but sad, smile. "Yes, thank you for calling. Can you tell me what happened with Detective Reagan this morning?" he asked her.
"Yes sir. It started off like any other shift…we were getting our paperwork squared away and waiting for the reports back from the 12th Precinct on our case. I could tell something was wrong with Danny and he finally told me that him and Jamie had a fight at your family dinner yesterday and he wasn't sure if he should talk to him or wait for his brother to talk to him first. We talked for a bit about it but then we got back to our work. Then he got a text, I think from Jamie because I heard him say "speak of the devil" when he saw who had texted him. He was on his phone for a bit before he said he had something he had to do and he'd be back. He didn't tell me what was up, but the look on his face…I could tell, he looked mad, maybe a little scared…but he was trying not to show it. When he hadn't returned, I tried calling his phone and it would just ring and ring until it went to voicemail." She took a breath before continuing. "I told my CO about it and told him his cell phone is still on but he won't answer my calls or texts. He had me trace his phone so I did and that's when we found his car next to a run-down house…we had to break into it to get to his phone, and his gun, that were in the glove box. We checked the whole area but we didn't find any traces of him."
When she had stopped, he had closed his eyes again and leaned his head on his hand. "So you don't have any idea of what made him leave?" he asked her.
She hesitated before she answered. "We were able to get into his phone a few minutes ago and saw the texts that he received at the Precinct. They say they were from Jamie but they clearly weren't. They said to not say anything to anyone and to follow the instructions, which later included an address to that abandoned house and told him to go there in 20 minutes by himself and unarmed. Sir, there was also a picture attached…it was Jamie, tied and gagged with duct tape."
Frank did a quick intake of breath. "Are you sure?" he asked her.
"Yes sir, I'm sorry. Is there something we can do?" asked the detective.
He closed his eyes for a minute before opening them again and answering her. "I'll let you know, Detective. Thank you." He then hung up and looked out his window. What was he going to do? Both of his sons were missing? How did this happen, who could have done this? There was only one thing he knew he could do right now and that was having to make the hardest phone calls he's had to do since his son Joe was killed. He first called Henry, hoping he would give him advice and words of wisdom on how to make the other two calls. After talking to his father, he then called his daughter, and then his daughter-in-law. Of course they all wanted to know what had happened so he did his best to give them the cliff notes of what he was told by his sons' partners. They were all worried, as was he, but he just informed them that he'd keep them updated as soon as he had heard anything.
When he was done, he stood up and walked over to his windows, his hands behind his back. Here he was, the Police Commissioner of one of the biggest cities in the country, and he was at a loss of what to do. He had two officers missing; grabbed by someone or a group of people maybe and taken to who knows where…not just two officers though, but his own flesh and blood. His mind wondered to who had grabbed them; it obviously had to be something personal. But was it against one of them or both of them? Or maybe it was against him or possibly his father? Their family has been in law enforcement for decades, they've all made an enemy or two in their careers. Any one of them could have gone after his sons as some kind of revenge or payback…but who? He just hoped that he got some sort of ransom call soon, something to let him know they were okay and what the reason for them being missing was. He wasn't a rich man by any means, but he was able to live comfortably…but if it was money these guys wanted, he would do anything in his power and in his means to get it to them. He will do anything to bring his boys back home safe and sound.
A/N: Thanks for the reviews...please keep them coming, I appreciate it! :)
