Unfortunately for my readers, favorers, and followers, this is just a filler chapter as I wanted to have a light hearted friendship scene amongst Lily's year group. I promise that chapter 135 will have more substance to it. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
That afternoon's Care of Magical Creatures class was canceled due a lightning storm that forbade them to be outdoors.
Devon, Hugo, Stephanie, Samantha, and Lily decided to use this class period to take some friend time as just their house year group.
They went up to Lily's room and she retrieved a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans from her trunk and opened it.
"So," smiled Lily, "I thought we could take turns eating the Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans and guessing the flavors beforehand and then reacting to what they turned out to be."
"That'll be a cool way for us to have some lighthearted fun," cooed Samantha.
"This should be interesting," piped up Hugo eagerly.
"It's nice for us to spend some time as a house year group outside of the classroom, " said Stephanie warmly.
"Me first, " insisted Devon, reaching his hand into the box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, and pulling out a white one."
"Hmm, " interesting, " said Devon, "White could be ice."
"Maybe peppermint, " guessed Stephanie.
"Cement?" smirked Samantha.
"Glue?" grinned Hugo.
"Paper?" suggested Lily.
Devon popped the bean into his mouth.
"We were all wrong, " said Devon wryly, "It's snow!""
"Snow?" replied Lily, "You've eaten snow before?"
"Snow doesn't have any distinct describable flavor, " explained Devon, "But the bean had the texture and coldness of snow once I bit into it."
"That's interesting, " said Lily thoughtfully, "We always talk about the different flavors in Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, but we don't really stop to think about the different textures and temperatures the beans are given."
"It's all part of the experience, " said Hugo matter of factly.
"Still not quite sure how Devon knows what the experience of eating snow would be like," chimed in Samantha.
"When I was in elementary school, " grinned Devon in a reminiscent kind of voice, "Miles, Gary, Todd. and I would amuse ourselves by eating snow off the ground. We didn't care that snow is basically flavorless, we just thought eating snow was "cool" without thinking about it. Just one of those things from my childhood."
"Ah, that makes sense now, " understood Samantha.
"it's amazing how candy has the ability to stir up memories, " cooed Lily, "From his voice, it sounds as though that bean took Devon back to his elementary school years. "
"For about a second and a nanosecond, I was, in my mind, back at elementary school with Miles, Gary, and Todd, and the four of us were eating snow," said Devon cheerfully.
"That's wonderful, Devon, " said Lily radiantly, "Hugo, you next!"
Hugo ejected a yellow bean from the box and said, "Maybe it'll be banana."
'That would be boring, " said Devon with a laugh, "Maybe you'll get dandelion flavor."
"That would be gross, " interjected Samantha, "But not as gross as if it were urine flavored. "
Everyone shuddered and then giggled.
"Maybe it'll be sticky not flavor and have a papery quality to it, " guessed Stephanie.
"Maybe it I'll be a more mundane flavor like corn, " said Lily brightly.
Hugo ate the yellow bean and said, "Hmm, it's a mundane flavor but it is strawberry. I'd have thought strawberry would be red or pink, not yellow."
"That's another aspect of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans that's not talked about as much, the flavors don't automatically match the colors," piped up Lily.
"That's actually understandable, " put forth Devon, "Honestly, most people don't even pay attention to the colors of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans because they're so focused on what unusual flavor they might get."
"Kind of like Skittles confused in the muggle world, " said Samantha matter of factly.
"Stephanie, you may go next, " said Lily kindly.
Stephanie grabbed a red bean from the box and said, "Maybe red licorice."
"There's no such thing as red licorice, " said Devon scornfully, "Black licorice is the only true licorice. Maybe you'll get blood flavor. That's what you deserve for even suggesting those phony red sticks are actually licorice. "
"Maybe it would be even greater poetic justice if Stephanie actually got Red Vines flavoring, " said Hugo briskly.
"Or Twizzlers flavoring," added Lily hopefully.
"What's so wrong with Red Vines and Twizzlers?" asked Samantha curiously, "I don't care for them much, but what's actually wrong with them?"
"Calling them licorice, " said Devon fiercely, "Call them cherry sticks or strawberry sticks or whatever. The word "licorice" should be reserved for true licorice.
As Stephanie bit into the red bean, a loud POP was heard and Devon, Hugo, Samantha, and Lily all saw that the bean had splattered into numerous pieces in Stephanie's mouth.
Devon, Hugo, Samantha, Lily, and Stephanie all burst into huge fits of laughter. This was an outcome none of them could have seen coming.
"I think that was supposed to be balloon flavor, " said Stephanie cheerfully.
"That 'POP" sound was absolutely a balloon popping sound, " said Hugo gleefully.
"It's like all the different experiences you can get from Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans are coming to us today, " said Lily glowingly, "Samantha, why don't you give it a shot?"
Samantha snagged an orange bean out of the box and said, "I'm feeling lucky, I think it'll just be orange."
"Or pumpkin," suggested Stephanie.
"Or even orange juice!" said Hugo simply.
"Or hot sauce, " said Devon briskly.
"Or even peach, " said Lily crisply.
When Samantha consumed the bean, she said, "Orange it is!"
But, after she'd shallowed it, she let out a few involuntary meows.
"Samantha kitty!" said Devon teasingly.
"Yeah, Samantha's a feline!" ribbed Hugo.
"Samantha got caught off guard!" said Stephanie in a satisfied voice.
"I was, " admitted Samantha, "But it's all good. I can take teasing, ribbing, and razing a lot better now than when I started at Hogwarts."
"That's Ainsley's influence on you, " said Lily fondly.
"No doubt about that, " said Samantha warmly, "Ainsley taught me how to have a sense of humor."
"Well, " smiled Lily, "I guess it's my turn. I'm going for hot pink."
Lily snatched a hot pink bean from the box.
This time, no one even bothered to guess the flavor. They were all just excitedly awaiting what might happen.
"EW!' exclaimed Lily as she chewed and shallowed the bean, "It's vomit!"
Next nanosecond, Lily actually vomited onto the floor.
Devon, Hugo, Samantha, and Stephanie all grinned and giggled at Lily.
"Take that, Lily!" razed Devon, "Lily got the gross one! Lily got the gross one!"
Hugo, Samantha, and Stephanie joined in Devon's chant, "Lily got the gross one!"
Lily just looked on with a warm smile.
She giggled a bit herself and even joined in the "Lily got the gross one chant!"
After that, Devon, Hugo, Samantha, Stephanie, and Lily, all gave each other warm kind smiles.
"That was fun, " said Lily happily, "But I think we've had enough."\
Lily put the box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans back in her trunk and retrieved five individually wrapped lemon starbursts passing one each to Devon, Hugo, Samantha, and Stephanie while keeping one for herself.
"Let's got some good taste in our mouths, " said Lily crisply.
Devon, Hugo, Samantha, Stephanie, and Lily all ate the lemon starbursts and were pleased to get some pleasant flavoring in their mouths.
After that, they spent the rest of the period just talking and chatting until it was time for Lily to go attend James's Wandmaking class for the first time.
All five of them enjoyed the hour.
It was nice to just spend some time together having fun and humor as a house year group.
