This is a missing moment chapter that takes us back to Lily pre Hogwarts. Chapter 149 will return the story to its present timeline.
On Halloween 2017, Lily Luna Potter went down to breakfast to find a major surprise waiting for her.
James and Albus were away at Hogwarts and while Lily had adjusted to being the last child in the house by now, she had definitely been more subdued than usual over the past two months.
Harry and Ginny decided to lift their daughter's spirits on one of her favorite holidays by doing something a little different.
Oh, they'd still be taking her trick or treating that night and all, but Lily's mom and dad decided to surprise her at breakfast.
"HAPPPY HALLOWEEN, LILY!" chroused Harry and Ginny as Lily arrived in the kitchen.
"HAPPY HALLOWEEN, MOM AND DAD!" returned Lily warmly.
As she took her usual seat for breakfast, she saw the kitchen table had been decorated for Halloween.
An orange tablecloth had been laid over the table and the plates, knives, and forks were all orange too.
Harry was sitting in his usual spot and said, "Lily, Ginny's finishing up making breakfast, it'll be ready in a minute and a nanosecond.
Sure enough, a minute and a nanosecond later, Ginny came over to the table carrying a tray of food and placed a set of mini pancakes and sausage patties and Harry's, Lily's and her own plates and filled their glasses with Budweiser.
But these weren't just any mini pancakes and sausage patties.
The mini pancakes came in the shapes of ghosts, Jack O Lanterns, pumpkins, skeletons, tombstones, cats, bats, and rats.
The sausage patties were topped with white frosting that spelled out the word BOO!"
"Wow, mom," said Lily admiringly, "These pancakes and sausages are so cool!"
"I tried to include a decent variety of Halloween fare in the shapes, " said Ginny cheerfully, "I know you're a Halloween junkie."
"Thanks, mom," said Lily sincerely.
"Halloween is such an awesome holiday because there are so many different things you can do with it, " said Lily glowingly,
As Harry, Ginny, started to eat, Lily noticed that neither the pancakes nor the sausages had normal tastes.
"The pancakes are pumpkin flavored, and the sausages are licorice flavored, " observed Lily.
"I wanted to spruce up the flavoring for Halloween and pumpkin and licorice are flavors associated with Halloween, " explained Ginny.
"That's awesome!" cooed Ginny.
Harry, Ginny, and Lily all happily ate their Halloween breakfast with Harry and Lily admiring Ginny's work along the way.
After the entire meal was gone, bits of Harry's, Ginny's and Lily's hair started to randomly vanish. This lasted less than a minute and when this phenomenon stopped, Harry, Ginny, and Lily all had bald patches in their hair that formed the shapes of classic Jack O Lantern faces with the classic eyes, nose, and mouth.
"PRANKED!" yelled Ginny triumphantly.
Harry caught on at once.
"You bewitched the food so that we'd all end with Jack O Lantern haircuts after we finished eating, didn't you, Ginny?' guessed Harry with a smile.
"I did, " grinned Ginny, "But, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, so I included myself."
"Cool!" cooed Lily, "How long will it last?"
"Twenty hours, " said Ginny matter of factly, "Our hair will be back to well before breakfast tomorrow."
"I'm glad this will last the day, " said Lily radiantly, "I'm going to look SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute going trick or treating with my Jack O Lantern haircut!"
"I knew you'd enjoy that, Lily!" smiled Ginny, "But I wanted it to happen to you without telling you beforehand so there was an element of surprise to it.!"
"Which is why you went the prank route," smirked Lily.
"Having Jack O Lantern style haircuts is kind of fun for a day, " said Harry thoughtfully, "Though, I wouldn't want to keep that look for long."
"Nor would I, " admitted Lily, "For one day, it's brilliant. After that, I want my hair back. Mom understood this and so limited the scope of her prank to one day."
"Taking you trick or treating later with these haircuts feels so fitting for Halloween, " said Harry with a grin.
"It's perfect for what it is," said Ginny cheerfully, "Everyone will love us, especially cute little nine year old Lily with her jack O Lantern haircut."
"They'll love her, " agreed Harry happily, "Lily being a midget helps the cuteness factor here."
Lily blushed.
"Mom, " said Lily genuinely, "Thank you for giving me some Halloween surprises. I'll admit I've been pretty subdued recently, but, mom, you've just made Halloween 2017 a Halloween to remember. I'm so happy today!"
Harry and Ginny both smiled at hearing Lily say the words, "I'm so happy today!"
