Day 10: Mimikyu
(BGM: Po Town from Sun & Moon)
Me: You know something, Lyra?
Lyra: What's that, WildCard?
Me: I was thinking yesterday about Annihilape's Pokedex entry and then I realized…there are a lot of Pokemon with sad and/or disturbing Pokedex entries.
Lyra: By a lot I'm sure you mean one or two. I mean, come on, this is kid friendly franchise. How dark can these Pokedex entries seriously get?
Me: Drifloon's Pokedex entry says that it literally abducts children and takes them to the afterlife.
Lyra: The fuck Game Freak?!
Yeah, if you want some real nightmare fuel or are looking for examples on how not everything in the Pokemon series is kid friendly, look no further than some of the Pokedex entries. Naturally, some of the creepier entries come from the Ghost Types. I bring this up because we're talking about a Ghost-Type for today's Pokemon. It's none other than the disguised Pikachu wannabe himself…
Mimikyu!
(Insert Mimikyu cry here)
(BGM: Battle! Totem Pokemon from Sun & Moon)
Now the first question I'm sure you're all wondering is what exactly is so creepy or sad about Mimikyu? If anything, creating a Pikachu disguise so people will like it more is kind of endearing and wholesome. Well, according to its Pokedex entry in Sun and Ultra Sun respectively…
'After going to all the effort of disguising itself, its neck was broken. Whatever is inside is probably unharmed, but it's still feeling sad'. - Sun
It stands in front of a mirror, trying to fix its broken neck as if its life depended on it. It has a hard time getting it right, so it's crying inside'. - Ultra Sun
This poor baby broke its neck trying to make his Pikachu disguise and he has no real way of fixing it! Even worse is that this idea is reflected in Mimikyu's ability, Disguise. While Disguise is a great ability as it allows Mimikyu to take a free hit, basically giving you a turn to do whatever you want, it suddenly becomes less awesome when you take this information into account and all you want to do is hug the poor thing.
Then again, hugging Mimikyu might be a bad idea because there's a chance that you'll see what exactly is under that Pikachu disguise. Which brings us to its Sword Pokedex Entry
'There will be no forgiveness for any who reveal that it was pretending to be Pikachu. It will bring the culprit down, even at the cost of its own life.' - Sword
In other words, if you look under Mimikyu's Pikachu disguise, the punishment is instant death! Remember what happened with Meowth in the Sun & Moon anime? Yeah, not pretty.
Hell, this scary idea is even used in Mimikyu's own Z-Move, creepily titled 'Let's Snuggle Forever'! Where Mimikyu zips around the opponent, who is scared out of their mind, before lunging down at them and trapping them within his disguise where Mimikyu beats the daylights out of them.
Good…God!
With all of this information in mind, Mimikyu is easily the most disturbing Pokemon on this marathon so far. So what do you say we tone things down a bit by going over its stats and moveset.
Mimiky's HP and Special Attack are nothing special, but it's Physical Attack and Speed are pretty good, and it's Special Defense is its highest stat, clocking in at 105. Physical Defense isn't too bad either, and with the aforementioned Disguise ability I can see Mimikyu being a good tanking Pokemon.
As for its moves Mimikyu can learn some great Ghost and Fairy Moves naturally, like Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, and Play Rough. It can also learn some good stat lowering/boosting moves like Hone Claws, Charm, Baby-Doll Eyes, and Double Team, and it can also learn Wood Hammer naturally if you're looking for some variety in your Mimikyu's moveset.
It can learn some pretty good moves through other means too. Such as Phantom Force and Dazzling Gleam for STAB, and even Drain Punch and Leech Life for variety. Unfortunately that's where all of the good moves for Mimikyu end as most of its other TM moves are all special attacking moves, which as I've stated before is Mimikyu's weakest stat.
But regardless, with its creepy appearance, ability, and background, as well as the strong moves that it does have, I view Mimikyu as one of the stand out Pocket Monsters in the franchise's seventh generation.
Just don't look under this thing's disguise whatever you do….*shudders* …..
