With Kaitou KID gone, Snake starts going after the jewels more actively and people get killed. It doesn't take Shinichi long to see a connection to KID – and that this is the last branch left of the BO he had taken down.
Shinichi forms a special task-force to end the BO for good. And for that, he needs Kaitou KID's help.
The White Collar Phantom Thief
The Secret of Pandora
Case 21: Failure
The problem with all of this was that no museum put 'magic dagger made from a mythical comet' into their item description. Kaito had stolen a total of six daggers in the past three weeks now, had to leave the country for four of them (and actually hated it this time around, because he had to leave Shinichi and Mizuki behind alone and what if something happened? Sure, his detective was brave, strong and clever, but brave, strong and clever didn't beat a bullet to the head). All for nothing so far. He yawned exhausted as he collapsed onto the bed face first.
"You're back," Shinichi's voice sounded tired.
"Did I wake you? I didn't mean to wake you. I'm sorry, Shin-chan."
Shinichi rolled over onto his side, looking at his thief with gentle, amused eyes. The past two days, Kaito had been in Paris with terrible combination of Hakuba and Hattori. Shinichi didn't even want to imagine what that trip had been like and, for the first time, he found himself grateful not to tag along. When Kaito had to leave the country, they all agreed he shouldn't go alone. They'd managed to arrange something each time so far. The time before this, Takagi and Satou had gone on a 'romantic couple's vacation' to Venice for a weekend – and from the amount of blushing Takagi did when they got back, there had been time for romance too.
"When all of this is done," Shinichi spoke, soft and impulsive. "We'll go somewhere."
"What?" Kaito slowly peeled himself off the pillow to look at Shinichi exhausted.
"You're going to all these amazing places… to steal daggers…" Shinichi cleared his throat. "And we can… only be us in this house. So when all of this is done, when we finally took down the organization, I want us – you and me – to go somewhere. Just us. Doing… whatever stuff couples do when they go somewhere. Not steal, not solve crimes."
"Sounds unrealistic," Kaito raised one eyebrow. "But nice."
A small smile played on his lips as he leaned forward enough to kiss Shinichi. Going somewhere sounded nice. Making plans for 'after' sounded good, because it painted a picture of the future. They were both so caught up in living in the now, stumbling from one day of trying to solve this into the next, essentially not doing anything else beside hunting the Black Organization, tending to Mizu-chan and also solving every murder that came their way (because of course there were always murders when there was Kudou Shinichi). Oh, also, trying to maintain their social lives. Trying to spend time with their friends when possible, outside of this case.
"Sonoko is pretty far into the wedding planning," Shinichi whispered, running his fingers over Kaito's arm. "Well. Considering it's her, anyway. She is planning the wedding of the century."
Kaito chuckled and snuggled up to Shinichi, pulling his detective against his chest. "Yeah."
"I want us to go to her wedding together," Shinichi wasn't looking at him, was looking at the moon out of the window. "Not… Tsukino Guinevere and me. You and me."
"Oh," Kaito raised his eyebrows, honestly a little too exhausted to comprehend this.
"I don't want us taking down the Black Organization to be something in the far future. I want, I need it to be within reach," there was something in Shinichi's voice that Kaito couldn't identify, something deep and nearly desperate. "I wasted… so many years already… on these people. I put my life on hold. You wasted even more years on them. We both… we both missed out on so many things because of them, lost so much… I am not willing to lose any more time, to lose anything else. Sonoko is… one of my best friends. And I want to go to her wedding, with the person I love, without a disguise, without having to worry about… men in black showing up."
Kaito averted his eyes, recognizing the look in Shinichi's eyes. A near frantic despair. Loss. Fear. He recognized it, because he'd seen it in the mirror often enough, thinking these exact thoughts. He had lost so much and so much time to the Black Organization. Shinichi was right, he didn't want to lose anything more. He'd befriended Sonoko, he had. But not as himself. And… part of him did want to go to her wedding, as himself, have fun with them and with everyone, without having to pretend to be someone else. As good as he looked in a dress and the wig, he wanted to be able to go out there again as Kuroba Kaito, not Tsukino Guinevere. He wanted his life back.
"What's going to happen when all of this is done," Kaito couldn't keep the darkness out of his voice. "I'm still a fugitive from the law. I'm still… a known and wanted criminal."
"I have a plan."
With a heavy sigh did Kaito turn back to his boyfriend. "What's the plan, Shinichi. You… You keep saying that. And I know you're brilliant, but… I need to know. It's my life."
It was now Shinichi's turn so sigh. "I… I didn't want to tell you until I'm more sure. I'm better."
"Better?" Kaito sat up, frowning. "Shinichi-"
"I… will become Kaitou KID," Shinichi replied. "I have your face. If I can pull off a heist, a full heist, as Kaitou KID, while you are in the audience, with Nakamori-keibu… I want to cause reasonable doubt in your conviction, I want your confession to get thrown out. I want the world to go back to not knowing that Kuroba Kaito is Kaitou KID."
"What?" Kaito couldn't help but laugh, incredulous and overwhelmed. "You, my detective, want to become a thief to… lie to law-enforcement and have my name cleared? How? You are brilliant, but you are neither a magician nor a thief."
"I'm also a fast learner," Shinichi looked at him with a serious expression and then proceeded to make a deck of cards appear out of seemingly nowhere. "I… have… been meeting Jii-san after work for the past… couple of weeks. I've been studying tapes of your father's performances and of your performances, and I've had Jii-san teach me how to use your various gadgets."
"W… What…"
Kaito stared mesmerized at Shinichi's hands, moving so fast as they shuffled the cards. Expertly. He watched in stunned silence how the detective performed a row of card-tricks for him. Flawlessly so.
"I am not a thief or a magician, but I have always known how to figure your tricks out, I've always been able to dissect the mechanics behind them. There isn't much between knowing the mechanics and being able to apply them. I can learn. And I already have your face. Unlike Jii-san, who… when posing as KID, was always very obviously not you. But you on the other hand, you would pass every test of the cops, while I pull off the heist."
"I confessed," Kaito frowned, still watching Shinichi.
"Under duress," Shinichi shrugged. "Kaitou KID needed the attention drawn away from himself for a while to work without watchful eyes. You confessed to help, because the Black Organization killed your father, and Kaitou KID was chasing them. Kaitou KID broke you out of prison, for your own safety because he feared that the organization would be targeting you in prison."
"You… really thought this through."
"As Kaitou KID, I will tell them so, on camera, thank you for your help. A good lawyer – and between your money and my money, we will get the best damn lawyer out there – can easily dismiss the charges for a lack of evidence," Shinichi paused. "And yes. I have thought this through. I… When I'm not working on trying to bring down the Black Organization, or working on a case for the agency, I am working on this."
Kaito had no idea how to response to this. This was so much. Shinichi had put so much thought into this, time into this – was learning magic for him. Was willing to do something very illegal again for him, just like he had broken Kaito out of prison. Grasping Shinichi's neck, Kaito pulled him into a deep, slow kiss, trying to convey his amazement and love.
Shinichi looked dazed, a pleasant flush on his pretty cheeks. "I… didn't want to tell you earlier. I didn't want to get your hopes up in case… I fail."
Kaito's eyes softened as he looked at his boyfriend. Oh. His detective had been worried about failing. It didn't entirely compete for Kaito, the idea of Shinichi failing at something. That boy had flown a plane with Kaito! He'd solved so many crimes. Had done so many amazing things. Kaito couldn't imagine Shinichi failing at anything, quite frankly. With gentle hands did he cradle Shinichi's face from both sides, making Shinichi look at him.
"My Great Detective can not fail," Kaito spoke with utmost conviction, looking deeply into Shinichi's eyes. "You can not fail. Not if you set your mind to something. You are brilliant. You can do anything you set your mind to. Look at you, look at everything you have accomplished, every case you solved, every life you saved, every skill you learned."
The blush on Shinichi's cheeks was without comparison. His mouth stood a little open as he stared at Kaito in something akin to awe. He could see it, he could hear it – just how firmly Kaito believed in him. He wasn't just saying idle words to appease Shinichi, he meant it.
"H… How do you…" Shinichi trailed off, unsure how to even finish that sentence.
How do you believe in me this much? How do you love me this much? In lack of words, Shinichi simply leaned in and pressed his lips against Kaito's in another deep, passionate kiss. It felt like the were melting into each other, hands clinging onto the other, both scooting as close as possible, until Shinichi found himself seated on his boyfriend's lap, chest against chest with his magician.
"I could teach you," Kaito was grinning broadly when they parted. "I mean, videos are great. Jii-chan is great. But I'm me! I'm Kaitou KID. Nobody can teach you how to be Kaitou KID better than the one and only Kaitou KID. I get that you didn't ask me to teach you because you were keeping it a secret, but now that I know, I could also just… help you."
"You just want to live some teacher/student fantasy, you perv."
Kaito sputtered, and then he blushed furiously. "That… hadn't even crossed my mind yet but oh that is a wonderful idea, yes we should-"
With another kiss did Shinichi shut his idiot boyfriend up. "Never mention that again. And then I might actually take it into consideration."
Kaito deflated with a pout that should not be as cute as it was. "First you bring up great ideas and then you tell me to never speak of them again. That's just mean, Shin-chan."
Rolling his eyes, Shinichi placed another placating peck on Kaito's lips. "It's late. I was already asleep when you got here and you had a long flight. How about we go to bed, before the tiny terror that now lives with us is going to wake us early in the morning for breakfast?"
Wrapping his arms around Shinichi's waist, Kaito adjusted them both to lay down comfortably. He loved hugging and cuddling his boyfriend, Shinichi was perfect for comfort. With a small huff did the detective adjust to lay against him, his head on Kaito's chest.
"I did buy souvenirs for Mizu-chan," was the last thing Kaito said before falling asleep.

Spontaneous brunch was not exactly Shinichi's thing, but Aoko had suggested that they could meet for breakfast to talk about the trip Hakuba, Heiji and Kaito had taken. It felt like a good way to kill two birds with one stone. Debrief and also spend some time with their friends. Heiji skipped on it due to Kazuha not knowin the full truth, he was instead handling a debrief with the police, but they invited Sera and Ran so Sera could also get caught up.
"I like this," Ran smiled as she looked around. "It's like a couples' thing. We should do this outside of work, with Hattori-kun, Kazuha-chan and of course Sonoko."
"Yes, we should make this a regular thing," Aoko agreed.
Shinichi made a small noise and refrained from commenting because going out to eat with all four other couples sounded more like a nightmare and less like a good time to him. Going out just to eat was not exactly his definition of a fun time and if there were all four of them – Shinichi, Hakuba, Sera and Hattori – then there would absolutely be at least one murder anyway.
"Look!" Mizuki ran up to Ran, holding up a stuffed bear wearing a Venetian mask. "Kaito-nii-san got me a teddy for my collection!"
"Your collection?" Ran's face softened as she looked at the bear.
"Yes! The first one I got from Kaito-nii-san was a Kaitou KID teddy, and now he has been buying me one from every place he went for work," Mizu puffed her chest out proudly.
"That is so sweet," Ran smiled, her eyes drifting to Kaito and Shinichi for a moment.
"Okay, Mizu-chan, time to put the bear away, you know, no toys at the table," Shinichi ruffled her hair. "And go wash your hands, I know you haven't yet."
Mizuki pouted but she obediently ran off to do as she was told. Amusingly enough, Kaito had a smiliar pout on his face as he put some of his gadgets off the table at a glance from Shinichi. Ah. So the 'no toys at the table' rule was not entirely about Mizuki then? Ran chuckled amused.
"It's not funny," Shinichi huffed. "It's like I'm taking care of two kids."
"At least I am not the only one who knows the troubles of trying to reign Kaito in," Aoko grinned.
"Oi, oi, oi," Kaito glared, first at his boyfriend and then at his best friend. "I'm not a kid!"
"No, you are worse," Shinichi leveled a glare at him. "I don't have to hide the chocolate from Mizu-chan, she knows not to snack before dinner, but you are like a bloodhound at finding it and then you spoil your appetite and then you whine about a stomach ache."
Kaito gave a small, miserable noise at that. "The betrayal. I am so hurt."
At that, Shinichi simply rolled his eyes. Ran rested her chin on her hand, watching them with gentle eyes. It was so refreshing to see Shinichi this aloof and happy. Regardless of how hard she thought, she couldn't remember ever seeing Shinichi like this. And then Mizuki came running back in, holding her hands up for Shinichi to see that they were clean. Smiling at her, Shinichi gave her a high-five and then they all sat down together at the set table. Seamlessly did Shinichi and Kaito start putting food on Mizu's plate and fill her tea-cup. They were so in sync, without even talking, they did one thing and the other did the next. Oh. Oh, they weren't just happy. They were really good at taking care of Mizuki that way, at parenting. The great Kudou Shinichi, a parent. Isn't that a sight that Ran had never expected to see. Her smile grew a little.
Who would have thought that a thief would do Shinichi some good. Then again, thinking back on their past – now that she knew Conan was Shinichi – those two had always had this connection between them. The way they had worked together. There was something about Kaito that balanced Shinichi out, because they were so similar and yet so different.
"Ran?" Masumi's voice was soft as she tugged on her girlfriend's hand. "Food is getting cold. Whatever has you distracted, make it wait until you ate."
She blinked a few times as she turned to look at Masumi. Sometimes, when she looked at Masumi, she could still hear the waves. It would never cease to amaze her, that even after all of these years, after only having met Masumi one time as children, that memory had been so seared into her brain. And it amazed her even more that they had found each other again. Like fate putting Masumi back into Ran's life, as though they were meant to be in each other's life. Be together. Smiling to herself, Ran leaned in to kiss Masumi, ever so gently.
For so long, Ran had lived for a future that wasn't hers. A future she knew set into her mind by what society expected. Her and Shinichi were best friends since childhood, a boy and a girl, one day they would get together and then get married and have two children and that was just how life was supposed to play out. So she put her own life on hold to wait for Shinichi, and she put expectations onto Shinichi that perhaps she had no right to. And then Masumi had come and for the first time, Ran felt like she was no longer running after Shinichi, she was instead running toward something else, something new, something that was wholly hers. Masumi was wholly hers.
"Thank you, dear," Ran smiled and returned her attention to the food.

Mizuki looked adorable in the little costume that Kaito had made for her. It was like a miniature KID suit, only that it was all pink, the red on Kaito's was purple on hers. And she looked so proud of her new costume, standing with her little top-hat in hand, chest puffed out. Next to her stood Kaito, in his own KID get-up, and he looked so happy as he looked at Mizuki.
"She is adorable," Kaito whispered in awe. "Look at my little assistant!"
Shinichi, sitting on the couch in Kaito's secret KID room, shook his head amused. Not that he could argue with Kaito. KID Junior did look very precious. Shinichi reached for the card-deck that he tended to fidget with these days. A habit of Kaito's, normally. Which was exactly why he did it. To become Kaitou KID, he needed to adapt his mannerisms. And part of why Kaito was so dexterous was because he constantly trained. This was an exercise in deft fingers.
"What is this going to be, Kaito?"
Shinichi heaved a sigh. Today was his day off, but for some reason, his boyfriend had insisted on him going into the 'KID cave' (stupid name, but Shinichi digressed). There could have been a date. Or just a lazy day of laying in bed. Or a not so lazy day in bed, come to think of it. Instead, he was sitting in front of a fully dressed-up Kaito.
"Your first lesson," Kaito grinned broadly. "You agreed that I could teach you. What better time than today, when you have the day off anyway? And my wonderful assistant here agreed to help."
He motioned toward Mizuki, who took a proper bow at that, like she had seen magicians do on stage. Shinichi snorted softly to himself. This thief was not a good influence on the child. Then again, who was he to talk? He'd solved a murder with her yesterday at the grocery store.
"The most important thing about magic," Mizuki stood with her head very high, until she furrowed her brows. "Is mis… mis… Mister Reaction?"
She looked at Kaito for help and he gave her a thumbs up. "Close. Misdirection."
Shinichi had to cover his mouth with his hand to not actually laugh, because he didn't want to hurt Mizuki's feelings. Okay, perhaps this could be a good use of his day off after all.

Shinichi bit his lips. This was okay. He could do this. He had mastered much more complicated and also way more dangerous things. This was just… dinner and a movie. His cheeks flushed. Kaito turned toward him with an amused grin. This time, they were both in disguise, just as… normal boys. College students. Oh, what an alternative life that would be.
"I like when you're nervous, Shin-chan," Kaito whispered into his ear.
"Yeah?" Shinichi glared slightly. "Why?"
"Because… it shows me the great Kudou Shinichi doesn't actually have all the answers either," Kaito shrugged, grinning just a tiny bit. "It shows me that all of this is as new and awkward for you as it is for me. Because sometimes, when we're laying in bed, it feels all so… easy and normal and natural. Because we're just… us. But neither of us are really, uh… experienced… in the whole 'classical romance' part, huh? Being normal and all that."
Shinichi actually relaxed a little at that, chuckling to himself. Okay. At least he wasn't the only one aware of this, and nervous about it. Going on normal dates, like normal people. Neither of them really was normal, after all. They'd never had that high school sweetheart with regular dates experience before, they'd always been all about work, work, work.
"We'll figure this out together, mh?" Shinichi whispered against Kaito's lips.
Kaito bridged the last bit to kiss him. "We'll make our own normal."
Author's note: Aaand there it is. Shinichi's great plan of clearing Kaito's name. Didn't want to put it in until it happened, but then that felt... not right, because Kaito would want to know, and at one point Shin would have to stop keeping it from him! Next chapter, we are going to get to the dagger though xD
