Later that night, Nick was outside the opera house, waiting on the steps. His back was turned to the doors, to avoid recognition - at least for now.
He was waiting for Otto to come out, even after being kicked out by Gary and Larry, and confronted by Judy for his original plans. Nick wasn't giving up; he just had to reunite the Dowager Emperor with his long-lost granddaughter. Even if it meant having to take him to her by force himself, no matter how.
The fox took a peek behind him. He spotted Otto walking out the door, down the steps, and towards a motor car preparing to take him home.
His black panther chauffeur, Mr. Renate Manchas, helped the Emperor into the car.
With the two distracted, Nick made his sly move, and rushed over to the car. With Otto contained in the back seat, the fox slid into the driver's seat, and pressed his foot on the gas pedal, driving off in a fast pace.
A stunned Mr. Manchas was left standing in the dust. He shouted after the car, unable to stop it as it disappeared down the road.
In the car, Otto was jolted back by the fast motion. "Manchas, slow down!" He demanded.
Nick turned his head back to the rabbit, revealing himself. "I'm not Manchas," he responded, now agitated by Otto's bitterness. "And I won't slow down. Not until you listen!"
Otto gasped, upon recognizing Nick. "You! How dare you?! Stop this car, immediately!" He cried, slamming his cane down on the floor. "STOP THIS CAR!"
But Nick just ignored him, and drove faster down the road.
Not too much later, they arrived in front of Gazelle's house and came to a halt. Nick got out of the car, and went around to Otto's door to open it. He stared at the rabbit in anger and desperation.
"You HAVE to TALK to her," Nick firmly insisted. "Just LOOK at her. PLEASE!"
Otto glared at him. "I won't be badgered by you a moment longer," he stated, refusing once again.
Nick couldn't take it anymore. At first, he tensed, really wanting to let the old rabbit man have it for not listening to him. But, that would only make things worse. So instead, Nick pulled himself together before reaching into his pocket and pulled something out; Judistasia's music box. He knelt down to show it to Otto.
"Do you recognize this?" He asked.
The Dowager Emperor looked at the music box, and was taken aback. Nick allowed the rabbit man to take it, finally winning his attention.
"Where did you get this?" He asked, softening up a little.
Nick took a breath to soften up, himself. "I know you've been hurt," he gently said. "But it's just possible that she's been as lost and alone as you."
Otto looked up at Nick. "You'll stop at nothing, will you?" He asked
Nick smirked. "I'm probably about as stubborn as you are."
Inside Gazelle's house, Judy was up in one of the bedrooms, packing up in her suitcase and preparing to leave Zootopia. She was no longer wearing her opera gloves or jewelry. The one piece of jewelry she did have on, was her "Together in Zootopia" necklace.
Judy tried her best to control her emotions as she packed. Then, she came upon the rose that she had been given earlier. The sight of it instantly reminded her of her amazing time in Zootopia... but mostly of Nick. She could not bear to be reminded of the fox who had lied to her and used her for con. So, she threw the flower into a nearby trash bin.
Just then, a knock came at the door.
Judy immediately suspected it was Nick, trying to apologize to her. But the rabbit simply frowned. "Go away, Nick!" She angrily blurted.
She heard the door open behind her.
Annoyed, Judy turned around. "I said-" she began to shout. But then, she instantly cut herself off with a light gasp. It wasn't Nick who came into the room.
It was Otto.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Judy apologized to the elderly rabbit. "I-I thought you were..."
"I know very well who you thought I was," Otto responded. He stepped further into the room. "Who exactly are you?"
Judy opened her mouth to answer. But, then she remembered wanting him to remember her. "Eh... I was hoping you could tell me?" She asked, sheepishly.
"My dear," Otto sighed, becoming annoyed. "I'm old. And I'm tired of being conned and tricked."
"I don't want to trick you," Judy assured, honestly.
"And I suppose the money doesn't interest you either?"
"I just want to know who I am," Judy explained. "Whether or not I belong to a family. Your family?" She added, hopefully.
Otto looked at her, rather impressed by Judy's words. "You're a very good actress," he simply said. "The best yet in fact, but..." he sighed, with a frown. "I've had enough."
The Emperor began to leave.
Judy shook her head in disappointment. But before Otto could reach the door, the scent of something caught her nostrils. "Peppermint?"
"An oil, from my hands," said Otto.
Judy nodded, feeling a memory come back to her. "Yes... I spilled a bottle... the carpet was soaked... and it forever smelled of peppermint," she finished with a small smile. "Like you."
Otto stopped as Judy was saying this. For some strange reason, he too, had the same memory of what this female rabbit had said. He took a seat on a small bench in the room, in front of a makeup stand.
"I used to lie there on that rug and, oh, how I missed you when you went away... When you came here. To Zootopia." Judy could suddenly feel it all coming back. All her memories of the past, they all came flooding back.
Otto gently motioned for her to join him on the bench, and Judy accepted the request. The elderly rabbit then noticed the necklace around Judy's neck. "What is that?" He asked, pointing to it.
"This?" The bunny touched her necklace. "Well, I've always had it ever since, before I can remember."
Otto held his paws out. "May I?"
Judy took her necklace off, and gave it to Otto, allowing him to take a closer look at it.
Otto stared at it in awe and disbelief. He remembered giving something just like this necklace to his beloved granddaughter, the night before the siege on the Hopps family happened. He read the words "Together in Zootopia" written on it."It... was our secret. My Judistasia's and mine." He reached into a bag he was carrying, and took out the music box.
Judy's eyes widened at the sight of it. "The music box." She took it. "To... to sing me to sleep while you were in Zootopia." She gently took her necklace back, and used it to wind the music box. Her necklace was revealed to be the key to this bejeweled box.
As she winded, Judy began to hum a little melody. Then, the music box slowly opened up, playing the same lullaby Judy was humming.
"Once Upon A December (Lullaby)"
(Judy)
"Hear this song,
And remember,"
(Both)
"Soon you'll be,
Home with me,
Once upon a December,"
The rabbits finished singing the song, and gazed at each other. Their voices trailed off as they look at each other, realizing the long search for Judistasia was finally over. They couldn't believe it.
"Oh, Judistasia," Otto beamed, blinking tears in his eyes. "My Judistasia!"
Judy and Otto threw their arms around each other in an emotional embrace. They were finally together again, after all these years of separation.
Nick stood outside Gazelle's house on the street, looking up at the window. He smiled, knowing that his mission to reunite Judistasia - the real Judistasia - with her grandfather was accomplished.
The fox blew a kiss to the window, before walking away down the road. He had a rather gloomy look on his face, now that it was all over.
