Chapter 134

The Wailing Vale

'Long ago, there was a tiny mining village nestled in the hills of Zeppil.'

'The village had grown around one hill in particular, under which existed tons of the invaluable fuel resource: Coal. The Crafters burned the coal in their furnaces, cooking delicious meats, smelting unrefined ores, and smoothing over even the roughest of blocks. Then, with the introduction of Dinnerbone's airships, the mine's reserves found a new use powering the skybound marvels.'

"Woooo! Airships, yes!"

Beican stopped his story as everyone fixed Lenz with an irritated glare. He shrunk in upon himself, hiding in his scarf.

"Er… apologies. Please, continue."

'Indeed, coal became the village's chief staple. But, it was not without a hefty price. Often times, the caves beneath the hill were infested with Mobs. The unholy monstrosities preyed upon unsuspecting miners, most devastating being the Creeper, whose suicidal detonations disturbed rock and gravel. If the explosion did not kill the miner, the displaced gravel and stone did. Many a miner was lost to those caves, never to be found.'

'It was when one of these miners, a devoted husband, was lost that things truly took a turn for the worst.'

'The man had been digging in a new portion of the mine, one that was not yet illuminated or inspected for hidden pitfalls. A Creeper snuck up behind him mid-swing, and blasted apart the rock he stood upon, revealing a deadly chasm below. He fell into darkness, never heard from again.'

'But his final moments were heard. Witnesses brought the man's demise to the attention of the village leader, who was then saddled with the dour responsibility of informing the man's wife.'

'The wife was inconsolable, as would anyone facing such news. But she remained firmly in denial. She refused to believe her husband was truly dead, and demanded the miner's send out a search party for him. She offered her life savings as a reward to anyone who could find her husband, certain he was injured and scared, but alive.'

'A search party was formed and sent into the very chasm the man fell down. Half the Crafters lost their lives to clumsy missteps and violent Mobs, but after two days of searching, the party found something. Items, strewn across the chasm floor, later identified as the husband's personal belongings by the wife.'

'That should have been the end of it, the items substantial proof to a grieving widow that her husband had fallen to his death, but the wife remained unconvinced.'

'"Where is the Head?" She demanded. "Items can be misplaced, but until I see my husband's Head, then I know in my heart he is still alive. So go back down there and find him!"'

'But they didn't. Not only had the search party suffered casualties in the chasm, but even when they brought back conclusive proof her husband was dead, the wife obstinately refused to hand over the proffered reward. The men did not wish to suffer more death in a case that was clearly resolved. They left the widow, and the reward, and moved on.'

'But the wife could not move on. She never moved on, still hoping her husband was somehow still alive. She took the reward and went around the village, offering it to anyone who would journey down to that chasm and search for her missing husband. But the village leader was faster. He had already explained the situation to the village, and asked them to treat the widow kindly.

'"She's beleaguered by grief." He explained. "There was no Head found, but we've lost too many men trying to find her closure. Losing any more is out of the question. She has to accept the truth. Her husband is gone."'

'And so, the widow appealed to Crafter after Crafter, but was constantly, if kindly, rebuffed. She felt angry and betrayed, misinterpreting their kindness as indifference. They had already given up on her and her husband, and she hated it.'

'She didn't eat. She didn't sleep. All she did was ask around the village for help, only to receive empty apologies and condolences. One day, she snapped.'

'"Stop calling me a widow!" She screamed in the center of the village, startling everybody. "You don't think I can hear the whispers? You all think I'm crazy! But I know my husband is alive! I can feel his love, right here!" She slammed a palm against her chest. "I can feel how scared he must be, alone down there, waiting for someone to save him. Waiting for me to save him!"'

'The woman rounded on the watching crowd. "But none of you care! None of you help! You just feel sorry! How would you feel if it were your husband down there! Or your wife!"'

'For the first time, the woman's words took on a darker tone, and the watching crowd looked on in fear as they swore they held an eldritch power to them. Something that brought a shiver up their spine.

'The woman's shouts grew louder. "None of you could possibly understand a connection born from true love! None of you know how my heart aches! But I hope you learn." She hissed, her voice carrying a hidden edge, echoing in the brains of those unable to tear their eyes away. "I hope all of you lose a love to this infernal mine. Then you could understand a fraction of what I feel! Do you hear me!? I curse this village! I CURSE YOU ALL!"'

'Those were the woman's last words. She fled the village square and descended into the mine, intending to find her husband herself or die trying. Several miners tried to stop her, but failed. She always slipped free or lost her pursuers, as if some otherworldly power was assisting the widow, guiding her deeper into the mine. Deeper into the chasm. Deeper into parts no miner had ever explored.'

'The widow was never seen again.'

'But her final curse haunted the village in more ways than one.'

'A week after she fled into the mines, there came an unsettling sound.'

'A grieving wail.'

'A wail so warped, so unsettling, and so full of sorrow, that it rattled the bones and shook the soul of every inhabitant of the village. The sound came from the mine, and nobody wished to discover what unholy abomination could make such a dirge.'

'But there was coal to be mined, and the village leader needed to know what danger occupied the mine. He sent a group of adventurers down there, hoping they could deal with whatever was making that horrible noise.'

'Deep in his heart, he couldn't forget the incensed widow and her parting words.'

'A hush settled over the town - broken only by the mysterious wailing - as they awaited the adventurers' return. Then, without warning, the wailing shifted into blood-curdling screams.'

'The villagers cowered under the sound, as if some supernatural power was pressing down on them, draining their hope and terrifying them beyond belief.'

'There were other screams too. The adventurers' as they fought whatever was down there. Some of them were cut off, but all were heard by the village above. Reluctantly, the village leader gathered some men and waited by the entrance to the mine, weapons drawn. They were met by the few adventurers who had survived whatever was down there. They ranted and raved of a large, hideous spirit that spat fire and screamed bloody murder. And they all flinched when the blood-curdling screams heard moments before suddenly shifted back to their original, subtler wail.'

'The village leader didn't know what to think. There was clearly some monster down there. But nobody wanted to go down and investigate after seeing the hardened adventurers reduced to trembling wrecks.'

'But the most unsettling thing was that the adventurers that survived whatever was down there were all single. Only the married adventurers never returned.'

'The mine was indefinitely shut down. The wails continued without rest and the married villagers packed up most of their belongings and left. They were convinced that the village was cursed. Cursed by the widow they knew in their hearts was the spirit making that horrible sound. The grieving widow still searching the mines for her beloved husband.'

'Bereft of their staple export, coupled with the wails haunting their streets - and nightmares - the village soon became abandoned, the buildings perfectly untouched, as not even Griefers approach the terrifying and aptly named Wailing Vale.'

'So Crafters beware. If you have a love, stay out of the mine, lest you encounter the grieving spirit who lost hers, and will surely kill to share her aching pain.'

[Cobb]

"That's the saddest story I've ever heard." Noman said once it was over, his expression solemn.

"What a load of hooey."

"Read the mood, Lenz…"

"I do not mean to sound inconsiderate, but come on. Curses? Spirits?" He scoffed. "A good story, but a fictitious one, nonetheless."

"How much of that story actually happened?" I asked Beican, who had come to relax against his chair.

"Well, for one, there was actually a woman - Aisu - grieving the death of her husband." He explained. "She set up the reward and appealed to plenty of villagers for help, but none did. I'm ashamed to admit I was one of them." He glanced down sadly. "It was easier for us to accept her husband had died. It happened often in the mines and finding the man's personal belongings should have laid the issue to rest. She just… refused to stop."

"Can you blame her?" Mirabelle piped up. "Would you have stopped looking if I went missing?"

"Never." Beican wormed his hand into Mirabelle's, the two sharing a tender moment. I couldn't help but compare the couple to Jade and me. Would our relationship ever grow to that point?

"As for the cursing, I can tell you that part was exaggerated." He looked up, recalling distant memories. "She broke down in the village square, but there was no eldritch power to her voice. I think that was just added to make the myth spookier."

"Aha!" Lenz pointed. "So you admit it is nothing more than a ghost story."

"I never said that." Beican frowned. "The part about her running into the mine and going missing is true. As is the mysterious wailing that showed up a week later."

"Probably the widow grieving after finding her husband's Head." Lenz dismissed.

"What was it that the adventurers found down there?" Beatrix asked, ignoring Lenz's doubts. "And did it really claim only the married ones?"

"That part is a bit tricky to answer." Beican allowed. "Ten men were sent down there and only three came out. I have no idea whether the ones that survived were single, and I have even less of an idea of what they encountered. Their accounts were more or less the same as in the story, and they were too terrified to recall correctly."

"Memories fade. Especially following trauma." Cormac offered his opinion on the matter. "The human brain locks memories away when they're too intense to handle. Whatever they encountered must have been the stuff of nightmares."

"I've no idea whether the spirit of the Wailing Vale targets those in love," Beican admitted, "but I'm not about to test that theory when I've got a bundle of happiness right here." Mirabelle squealed in happiness as the miner wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss.

At the affectionate display, my eyes slid to Jade. We were boyfriend and girlfriend now, but did that mean I loved her? Certainly, I enjoyed being alone with her. It made me forget about all the worrisome things in my life and just enjoy the moment. She made me feel… something special. It was something I couldn't quite explain, but I didn't want to give it up.

Was that love?

I raised a hand to my lips, thinking hard on the feelings we expressed.

"I still think the story is a load of hooey."

"Well, that's your choice." Beican accepted. "I only wished to warn you of the danger hidden below. What you do with this knowledge - and whether you believe it - is up to you."

"We appreciate your warning," I could tell he was rolling his eyes behind those glasses, "but perhaps you can offer your assistance another way. Like say, telling us the exact location of the coal chests…?"

"That was more years ago than I can recall." He replied. "Maybe if I was down there it'd jog my memory, but I already told you I ain't setting foot in that cursed coal mine."

"And yet you expect us to flounder around dangerous tunnels to find it?" Jade asked. "Awfully chivalrous of you."

He shrugged. "You seem capable. And I did warn you."

"Now hold on, sweetie," Mirabelle suddenly said, speaking carefully. "These people did save us. And they're stuck without coal. You're the only one who could guide them. Isn't there any way you can think of helping?"

"Didn't you hear my story?" he asked, incredulously. "There's a spirit haunting that place. It's dangerous."

"But you said you don't think it attacks those in love." She argued. "And I wouldn't feel right leaving these people to go down there without some form of guidance. Please?" She batted her eyes prettily. "For me?"

He sighed to himself. "You know I'd do anything for you. But…" He glanced outside the windows, just as a peal of thunder sounded out ominously. "I just have a bad feeling about that place. No exceptions."

"Phooey." Mirabelle dropped the doe eyes and sat in her seat, grumbling to herself. Beican immediately tried to appease her.

Jade was quick with the assist. "It's for the best, Mirabelle. We wouldn't want you risking your lives down there. We'll find the coal on our own somehow."

"...Maybe not." I whispered so that only Jade could hear. She regarded me with a raised eyebrow while the others debated further about the supposed spirit of the Wailing Vale. The two of us slipped away upstairs without much notice.

There was a door leading to a balcony overlooking the street. The lip of the roof shielded us from the rain, and the thunder was loud enough so we wouldn't be overheard.

"You don't want to go searching for coal?" Came Jade's immediate question. "Why not? It's just what we need to get the Asmodeus moving again."

"I'm not so sure we should be stumbling around a mine when there's an unknown monster purportedly haunting it."

"We survived the Angel of Death." She argued. "Any other monster should seem like chicken feed to us."

She had a point there. Still…

"What about Beican's warning? About how the spirit only kills those in love?"

Jade narrowed her eyes and rested a hand on her hip. "You don't think I can handle myself?"

"No, that's not it! It's just… we don't know what's down there." I settled upon. "We'll be going in blind to a maze of unstable tunnels with some thing trying to kill us." Lenz may have not believed, but Beican had clearly outlined the facts. And something killed those adventurers down in that mine. "Without a proper guide, it just seems too dangerous. There has to be a better option."

Jade let out a frustrated sigh. "Yeah, you're probably right. I'm just sick of waiting out this storm, I guess." She leaned on the balcony and held out her hand, catching a bit of rainwater to wet her hair. "Also, I'd be lying if I said that story didn't scare me."

"You think it could actually be the woman's spirit, still searching for her husband?"

"There shouldn't be spirits. The dead don't exactly stick around." She huffed. "I dunno. I haven't been hearing any wails, but that could just be the thunder's fault. Beican doesn't have a reason to lie."

"Hm." I nodded, staring out into the village. When lightning flashed, I could make out the silhouette of the hill down the street. The mine's entrance. The Wailing Vale.

"We'll see what happens." I decided. "If it comes down to it, the five of - the six of us can give whatever spook down there a run for its money."

"We could send the single ones down first if you think it would help." Jade suggested jokingly. "Soul, Floyd, Lenz-"

"Not Lenz. He has a burning love for airships."

Jade laughed. "We'll have to keep the Asmodeus out of there, then."

We shared a laugh at that, and the comfortable feeling I had when it was just the two of us returned. Before I knew it, I leaned in and gave Jade a quick peck on the cheek. It was something small, but I was surprised to see her cheeks heat up in response. Did it have that much of an effect on her?

"Oh, sorry, I-"

"No, no, you don't have to-"

"The moment seemed right, and I just-"

"Yeah, I get it, um…" She flushed, unsure of what to say next.

"...Wanna head back inside? The others are probably worried about us by now."

"N-No, I think I'll stay out here for a little longer. Get my emotions back in check." She was referring to her tinged cheeks. "I'll see you in a bit."

"Alright. Don't be too long." I left the balcony, my heart a frantically beating mess.

Argh! Stupid! Why did I think to kiss her like that? We don't have to kiss every moment we're alone! She probably thinks I'm a weirdo or something!

I couldn't look Soul in the eye when I returned. The axe-wielder could smell embarrassment, and wouldn't hesitate to make it worse. Better to just stare resolutely at a wall. Less suspicious that way.

They weren't paying much attention to me, though. Lenz was in the middle of proving to Beican why spirits didn't exist.

"When a Crafter dies, they leave behind a Head and their gear. A piece of them does not remain to wander our mortal plane in search of a similarly deceased husband. The plot holes in this myth are laughable."

"Oh yeah? Well centuries ago, Crafters would have called airships and interdimensional portals laughable. And yet look where we are?" Beican said, his voice rising. "Anything is possible in Minecraftia if you open your mind. Spirits and ghosts are no different."

"He looks like he's having fun." Mirabelle said as she walked over to me. "Your friend certainly gets him animated."

"Better that than be bored to death by a redstone spiel."

She laughed at that. "Anyway, if my husband misses me, tell him I went to look for the bathroom. I don't think mutton agrees with me."

Blasphemy. Mutton was the meal of champions. But I let her get away with it. I watched her walk away, turning down the corridor in search of a toilet, before I turned back to the rest of the group.

Everyone was chatting with one another, preoccupying themselves and even sharing in the games we had played in the previous residence. All except for one.

Without meaning to, I walked over to Noman.

"What is it?" He asked angrily, not even turning to look at me.

"You're all by yourself. Don't you want to socialize?"

"Is that another condition to our deal?" He asked.

"No. You just look…" I trailed off. "Nevermind."

"No, go ahead and say it." Noman pounced on my words. "You think I look lonely, right? I know you're thinking it. What with me sat here, talking to nobody."

"Then why don't you do something?" I asked. "You don't have to talk with my friends, but you could at least share some words with Beican's guys."

"For your information, I already have." He jerked his head towards the two Testificates in the corner. "I've been consoling them about their fallen brethren. They're a mess. And Beatrix isn't handling it any better. Forgive me for not wanting to pry too much. Some people would much rather be alone with their thoughts."

'So leave me alone,' was the hidden message.

"You need to stop being hostile, Noman. I'm not the bad guy."

"Then who is the bad guy, hm? Did the cult make you steal my artifact? Did Carys force you?"

"Yes!" I hissed. "Carys has been forcing me to make choices I don't want to make, can't you see that? If you would just help me, willingly-"

"I did help you willingly. Twice. Against Leadstripe and against the Paragons." He glared at me coldly. "You repaid me by sneaking into my room and pilfering the Bottes Zephyr. Now I'm the one being forced into making unsavory choices. We're done talking."

It was said with such finality that I knew it was time to leave. Still, I refused to let him have the last word.

"Ask yourself," I started, "if you would choose between saving a life or saving an artifact, which would you pick?" His eyes narrowed, but remained fixed on the floor. "I don't even have to think to know which I'd choose. Artifacts are just tools. It's the people that'll make the difference. Think about that when you're weighing your priorities."

"...I already have."

He refused to look up at me, and I took that as my cue to leave.

I could understand why he'd be upset if I stole, say, the Severe Shield, but what was the big deal about a pair of flying boots? How could those do any damage to the Endward Cult? All they'd do was help you run away.

And Noman acted like the artifacts were Minecraftia's only hope, but a quarter of the cult had already been taken down by Carys. She didn't need any fancy artifacts… or did she?

I stopped in my tracks. Was it possible that Carys had the Severe Shield? None of the other listed artifacts seemed powerful enough to kill the cult's Southern Division AND a pair of Hackers. Sure, she was strong on her own, but having the invincible chestplate in her possession might explain how she was able to take down so many powerful opponents.

It was a scary thought, since it meant my nemesis would be using the artifact instead of me. My only hope would be to capitalize on her desire to make me suffer. She wouldn't wear the chestplate for fear of killing me too soon. What were the chestplate's weaknesses again? Splash Potions to paralyze…?

I was in the middle of thinking up counter-strategies when Jade meandered down the stairs. "What's up? You got your thinking face on."

"Just… making plans against Carys." I replied evasively.

"Anything you think will work?"

"...Maybe paralyze her with splash potions."

"Hmm. Her reflexes were pretty sharp. And she'd probably keep her distance the second she saw the curved glass necks." She pondered for a moment. "It might work if you catch her by surprise, though. Like when you got her angry over her Mr. Pickles."

"Mr. Piggles."

"Oh, like it matters." She rolled her eyes, and as she did she took in the room's occupants. "Hey are we short somebody?"

My head instantly shot up, expecting one of my friends to be missing, but I understood what she meant with a sigh of relief. "Mirabelle." I nodded at the missing person. "She's in the bathroom." I glanced at the hallway, half-expecting her to appear. "She's been gone a while, though. Maybe I should check to see if she's alright."

"Isn't that kind of creepy?"

"I'm not going into the toilet with her." I rolled my eyes at her suggestion. "I'll just knock or something. Be right back."

"You never check on me when I'm on the toilet too long!" Jade called after me, jokingly. I just shook my head as I rounded the corner and down the hall, remembering where Mirabelle had gone.

There were a few open doors into bedrooms, showing where Mirabelle had checked. By that logic, I knew the first closed door I encountered would be the bathroom. Plus, it was a Dark Oak Door. No slits for maximum privacy. If that wasn't a bathroom door, I didn't know what was.

I rapped my knuckles lightly against the surface. "Hey, Mirabelle." I called. "I'm not trying to be a creep, I just thought I'd check up on you. You, uh, good in there?"

There was no reply. Probably because of how awkward I sounded.

"You need something to read?"

Oh, Notch, I was making it worse.

Still, she didn't answer.

"...Hello?" I pressed an ear to the door, waiting quietly. There was the violent whistling of wind from the storm… but it was louder than it should have been. "Mirabelle…? I'm coming in."

I pushed the door open, slowly, and peeked around the frame. Considering the large residence, it was no surprise that the bathroom was equally as extravagant. There was a large tub, a sink, and a toilet. There was also water on the ground, since rain was pouring in through a smashed window. That explained the wind.

It didn't explain where Mirabelle was.

"Hello?" The only place she could hide was in the tub, and she wasn't there. "Hello!?" I called out, a bit louder. The window. It was broken enough for a full person to slip out. It was the only place I could think she'd have gone. But why?

I peered out the window, having to narrow my eyes through a faceful of rain and wind. The booming thunder shook the walls. In the brief flashes of lightning I couldn't see any sign of the missing builder.

I pulled my head back in and stepped back only to pause upon noticing a book, placed neatly on the sink countertop. It glimmered against the pristine, white surface.

Curiously, I picked it up and began to read. There wasn't much, but with every passing word, my skin grew paler and paler.

"GUYS!" I called out, clasping the book tightly in my fist as I bolted out of the bathroom back to the others. "We have a situation!"

[Beican,]

[I'm sorry you have to hear it this way, but I knew you'd try to stop me.]

[I was always taught to help those that helped me, and that extends to the Crafters who saved us from those Mobs. I wouldn't feel right letting them go in that mine alone.]

[I know you're afraid to go down there, so I'll go myself. Ghosts don't scare me. I'll bring back as much coal as I can carry and apologize for worrying you.]

[Don't have anyone else come after me. I can look after myself, and I wouldn't forgive myself if anyone, especially you, got hurt. I love you.]
