AN: ATTENTION EVERYONE! I made a mistake last Chapter, pointed out by a guest viewer, and I have since changed it!

Last Chapter, I said that the Yanhua Gong was Akasha's artifact, but I made a mistake. The Yanhua Gong was Exter's artifact, and I even had it written in my notes and referenced earlier in Chapters 48 and 51. Akasha's artifact is the Vivlio Zythopoiias. So Noman will actually be in search of the artifact in Akasha as opposed to thinking Ciro already claimed it.

Sorry for the mistake. I've since fixed it though. You don't have to re-read the Chapter. Just know that the Yanhua Gong, the exploding bow, was Exter's, and the Vivlio Zythopoiias is Akasha's. Noman will be looking for it. Hope this doesn't cause confusion.

Thanks.

The answer to last week's riddle: Pillow! Congrats to Brookstar... again. Enjoy your Cookie and your acknowledgement.

This Chapter was originally going to be longer, but I since decided to split it up since it's a big exposition dump. Gotta pace myself...

Disclaimer: I don't own Minecraftia. If I did, I'd add Herobrine.

Chapter 141

Herobrine

[Cobb]

I looked down into the basin and noticed the gaps made in the Creeper gaggle were slowly re-closing. Despite crossing such a mass of Mobs, it was still ominous watching them march North.

"This type of thing isn't natural." I jumped as Wynn's voice surprised me. She was behind me, already atop her pristine steed, waiting up for me to leave the basin. "So many Creepers in one place. I don't like it."

I nodded in agreement, before a thought crossed my mind. I grinned sarcastically. "It was a good thing I was here then. How fortunate that you convinced His Eminence to bring me along on this mission, right?"

Wynn's eye twitched at my comment. "I couldn't have known you'd be useful or not, so don't act like you were a godsend." She growled in mild annoyance.

"Don't sell yourself short, Captain." I continued with my grin growing wider. "I'm sure His Eminence would congratulate your foresight in recruiting a heroic and Creeper-experienced Crafter such as myself."

I laughed before I felt a rapier poke my neck. "I'm sorry, Cobb. What was that?" She asked in a sickeningly sweet purr, her smile promising pain. "It almost sounds as though you're mocking me with your sarcasm."

"N-nonono! Not at all! You're always right, and I'm always wrong!" I quickly spouted, not wanting a rapier to the nuts again.

She accepted my words and removed the rapier from my neck. "Not always. I would have never thought of blocking Creeper explosions with a sword." She tossed me back my stone blade which I fumbled with before catching it by the handle. "You must have been pretty desperate to have figured that out the first time you tried it."

I scratched my head sheepishly as we rode our steeds away from the basin and towards the main group. "Actually… it wasn't a complete desperate guess."

"Hmm?"

"See, there was this book Helena gave me to read. Back at the Origin Zone." I explained to the Captain who listened intently. "It was written by that Herobrine guy and it described a bunch of information on Zombies, Creepers, Spiders, and Skeletons… though it left out a few things."

Like Witches and Stickmen.

Wynn's eyebrows lifted for a second before returning to their original position. "So… the book described how to block Creeper explosions?" She asked hesitantly. And was that wonder on her face? Or something else?

"Yeah. There's no way I would've made it this far without that information on Mobs." I admitted truthfully. "It saved my life more than once."

Wynn didn't reply right away. She opened her mouth to say something, but closed it a second later before adopting a complicated expression. I tilted my head in confusion as we continued to ride forward.

What's she thinking about?

"Captain?" I questioned, to which she responded with a calm smile.

"Sorry, I was just thinking of how your new fan club of guards would react if they knew you got all that knowledge from a book."

My eyes widened in fear. All that praise over my one good achievement. Only for them to discover it wasn't bravery, but book smarts!

"But I suppose we should tell them the tru—"

"Or!" I interrupted, raising my pointer-finger dramatically. "We can just keep that between us?" I suggested.

After the sarcastic teasing I gave her, I was sure Wynn wouldn't agree. She would get so much payback on me by ruining my one heroic moment.

Instead, Wynn nodded her head in agreement.

"Your secret is safe with me."

She knew…

She was protecting me…

"I'm not a cultist!" I shouted, half in exasperation. "Not an Executive either. Someone framed me."

I was captured by Hunderprest in those woods, overwhelmed by his hounds and paralyzed while he searched my Inventory.

"Hmm. Ender Pearls. Lot of food. Some books. A lot of emeralds. A couple of—oh!"

He went silent and I wondered what he found.

It was the Herobrine Book…

"A couple of what?" I asked, trying to remember what else I had in my pack.

"Hmm." Hunderprest drummed his fingers on my backpack. "Well, you can forget about your feigning innocence gambit. With contraband like this, I'm gonna have to confiscate your entire Inventory. Emeralds and all."

"What!?" I exclaimed as he already began to strip my armor. "What contraband are you talking about?"

I was with my friends, sat in an interrogation room in Jolin's highest security prison, the Root Cellar, quietly listening to Captain Enyeto as he decided our punishment.

"To begin," he spoke clearly, "you can relax whatever uneasiness is plaguing you. After we are done talking, you will be released from this prison with your respective Inventories returned to you, complete and intact." At that, we all breathed a sigh of relief. It was like a weight had been lifted. We would soon be free to go. "Your Inventories in particular were nearly confiscated." Enyeto continued, pointing to me and… Lenz? "They almost deemed the items within too suspicious to be returned to you, but the Princess managed to beat them down. She trusts you. Don't let her down." He warned.

I was perplexed by what he said. What suspicious items did Lenz and I have? They were strictly against arson, so was it Lenz's flint and steel? But then what did I have that was dangerous? For the life of me, I had no idea, and I couldn't exactly look through it at the moment. Nor could I ask until he was done.

Those Damn Books…

[Floyd]

"Hey guys, thanks for taking me up to the bridge right away." I droned sarcastically to the empty loading bay. "Not like I can't move or anything after using my Hack—oh wait."

I felt justified in being a little irritated. It was boring just sitting around. The airship was moving and we had to put Chataan Village behind us, but that didn't mean they couldn't carry me up the ladder. It was the least they could do after I saved them from those guards. What had even happened to get them so riled up?

And then there was that guy who swooped in. Arquero, the Book Burglar, was what they called him. He had vanished so quickly, I barely got a good look at him, but he provided a good distraction for me to rescue Lenz. Was that his intention?

I was taken out of my thoughts by the creaking of ladder rungs before Jade landed before me, wearing a troubled expression. She didn't even respond to my greeting, only robotically coming over to hike me over her shoulder and drag me to the ladder.

"Jade? What's up? Is everything okay up there?"

"Yeah… yeah…" She blinked. "No. Actually, it's…" She tilted her head to look at me. "Herobrine is the founder of the Endward Cult."

My mouth opened to say something, but the only utterance I could muster was a hollow echo, lacking in any substance or direction. What? What did she just say? Herobrine, the first Crafter to spawn, was the… the founder of…

Herobrine, the same Crafter who'd written those books of Cobb's. He was responsible for the Endward Cult?

"Ah." Jade hummed, slowly dragging me up the ladder. "So you didn't know either. Guess I made the right choice to get you first. Makes it so I don't have to explain this twice."

Explain what twice?

Up the ladder, down the corridor, and we found ourselves on the bridge. Lenz was at the helm, but when we entered, he actually stopped the Asmodeus mid-air and turned to give us his full attention. That should have been the first sign of how important the following conversation would be, for Lenz to forgo piloting and ensuring our getaway from Chataan so he could shut his brain off and listen.

The rest of the guild was in a similar state, their attention focused solely on Jade as she dragged me over to the wall and laid me leaning against it. Soul was scowling, Noman looked lost and confused, Cobb—

I couldn't actually see Cobb's face. His hand was in the way, his thumb and forefinger rubbing at his temples. His other hand was limp at his side, a book lying in his open palm.

It was Advanced Mob-Slaying.

"Lenz," Jade tried, "we really should keep flying—"

"No." Cobb said lowly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I want to hear this now."

Jade bit her lip looking at Cobb, but the rest of the Beginners nodded along. They wanted to know the truth about Herobrine from the one person on board that seemed to have the answers. Jade was a seven-digit. She had been around Minecraftia the longest. The rest of us were nine or ten-digits with no idea of Herobrine or his history.

"Okay…" Jade began, wringing her hands. "Okay, okay, okay. Where to start, where to start?" She mumbled to herself. "I guess I should start with the books, since they're what caused so much static at the gates."

"The outlawing of Herobrine's teachings, writings, and even the mere mention of his name is not exclusive to Akasha. The Mess Kingdom has had a bad history with the First Crafter, but the taboo encompasses all of Minecraftia. It's not punishable, but his name is never uttered because of how foul his crimes have been. Saying his name is said to bring misfortune and bad luck." She shook her head, mocking the superstitious notion. "On a larger scale, his name has been stricken from history and redacted from literature. Akasha started the practice of burning books that make any mention of him, and the rest of Minecraftia has followed their example. Which is why finding a book written by the man in question is so hard to come by."

She looked pointedly at the Herobrine book in Cobb's possession.

"All his books would've been burned long ago. You never would have heard a Crafter bring up his name. I suspect that's why you never knew the truth." She looked down at the floorboards. "If his name and teachings were lost to time, it would ensure that no freshly spawned Crafter would hear about him. The name would only remain in the darkest corners of those who'd lived through his time, which is something Minecraftia has long been in accord over."

"The Endward Cult, however, disagreed."

"They want Herobrine's name to remain fresh in Crafters' minds. As his creation, they work to spread his message and achieve his ultimate goal: To end all life as we know it."

"I don't… believe this. How…" Noman was at a loss for words. Cobb remained quiet, his hand still obscuring his eyes, giving that little pinch to his temple.

As for me, I kept replaying Jade's words in my head, getting stuck on the same phrase.

'How foul his crimes have been…'

It was then that a new memory resurfaced. One of a strong woman, clinging desperately to hope for her skyscraper community. Attila.

'I didn't know it at the time—nobody knew it at the time—but yes. The college's classroom was reserved for an Endward Cult meeting. And the one who unleashed the creature upon the people of Nitebane… was none other than the founder of the Endward Cult.'

"The Tragedy of Nitebane." The words came from Soul, and I could tell he was remembering the grim tale Attila had shared with us regarding the fate of her Kingdom.

"Yes." Jade nodded. "Herobrine was responsible for destroying his own Kingdom."

"What… his own…?" I faltered, the reveals coming too fast.

Jade looked exasperated. "Why do you think Nitebane is called the 'cult's birthplace'? Why do you think the Endward Cult wears black-dyed leather caps? Black. It's Nitebane's color, and the cultists wear it because their founder was also the King of Nitebane."

As much of a shock this was, Jade didn't allow any time to process it as she continued to relay to us the facts of the monster, Herobrine.

"He uncovered the blueprints to a manmade monstrosity and built it in the heart of Nitebane, in one of its colleges. You know the rest of the story. The monster burst forth, like the birth of some awesome calamity, and decimated Herobrine's own Kingdom for two weeks before being brought down by Notch and a band of his most-trusted warriors."

"That bastard…" Soul growled, his scowl deepening. Noman didn't have the energy to even chastise the axe-wielder for his language. Everyone was so thrown off. "No wonder his name is filth. He destroyed his own Kingdom—his pride and joy—and for what?"

"You misunderstand." Jade's voice cut the room's temperature in half. "If that were all Herobrine did, his name wouldn't be as feared as it is today."

I couldn't believe it. There was more? What more could he have done? What was worse than digging a hole for your Kingdom that only Carys_Angel could pull you out of?

"You asked what Akasha had against Herobrine?" She nodded to Cobb, though he made no show of acknowledgment. He just kept pinching his temples behind that hand. "Well, Akasha's King at the time, Tanner, the Third Crafter to spawn, received a gift from Herobrine. A magical book." Noman gave a slight start. "Akasha was famous for its library, the Akashic Records, so Herobrine offered that magical book as a donation. Tanner believed it to be a symbol of Akasha's deep connection to books, but Herobrine failed to mention that the book came with a curse." She closed her eyes. "Misfortune for those that behold it and are beholden to it."

"I am not one to believe in curses or magic." Lenz interrupted.

"You better believe it." Jade said. "Because twenty years after handing him the book, Akasha was attacked by the Hack Clan."

My eyes quivered, the lines stretching across my eyes becoming more pronounced as some darker part of my soul smoldered at her words. From where I was sat, paralyzed, I could see the stone Obelisk towering out the window and beyond, a straight line touching the horizon. The Hack Clan… Again with the Hack Clan… First Nitebane, then Jolin, now Akasha. Was there a Kingdom they left untouched?

"Many claim the book drew them here." Jade continued. "After killing King Tanner and tearing the Kingdom apart in search of the book, the Hackers enslaved the people of Akasha and had them build a home for the Clan. The Obelisk." Jade breathed a deep sigh. "It took years to repair their home, and by then, hardly anybody wanted to stick around. The population sank, the economy suffered, and rather than blaming the Hackers that could kill them as easily as swatting a fly, they chose to blame the man who was nowhere to be found: Herobrine."

"It was a pretty roundabout way of logic, but they reasoned that if Herobrine had never brought that cursed book, the Hackers would never have showed up looking for it. Never mind how Tanner was showing off its capabilities, daring someone to snatch it off him. In their eyes, it was all Herobrine's fault."

"…That's…" Noman mumbled under his breath, his eyes darting as he racked his brain for something. I didn't know what. Nor did I care. All I could think about were the Hackers who took another King from this world and tore apart Notch knew how many lives.

"Similar instances popped up all across Minecraftia." Jade continued, earning another collective gasp. "Jolin, where Grum offered his own life to mollify a Hacker slaughtering thousands in search of a magic stick. Zeppil, where Dinnerbone, one of Herobrine's closest friends beside Jeb, disappeared after being hunted down by a trio of Hackers. Exter, where the greatest military in Minecraftia lost thousands in the Stigmata Wars to repel the ten Hackers seeking to steal a magic bow. Every disaster at the tail end of the Age of Heroes was brought about by Herobrine and his cursed gifts."

Every bullet point she listed was another sucker punch to the gut. I had no idea the Hack Clan's history was this bloodied. But to hear that they were tied so closely to Herobrine and his strange magical gifts made me both incredibly angry and sympathetic towards Akasha. Before, Herobrine had always been a name we threw around while talking about Cobb's Mob books. Just another old name from a time long forgotten.

But he wasn't forgotten. He was still relevant. In fact, given his connections, Herobrine was looking to be my greatest enemy.

He started the cult that killed Silent and millions of others. He birthed the creature that destroyed Nitebane and ruined Attila's life. He got the Hackers involved and watched as they fought over his 'gifts', because if his Kingdom was fucked, so was everyone else's!

Feeling seeped back into my hands, and they unconsciously curled into fists. I was so mad I was shaking. I couldn't stand to hear any more about Herobrine. What more could he have done? How could he possibly sink any lower!?

"The only Kingdom untouched by disasters was Ringwood. Notch's Kingdom." Jade went on, having one last nail to drive. "At the time, Notch had stepped down as King and had disappeared. He was the only one who could have organized a defense against the Hackers and turned the disasters around, but he just vanished. And then, in the year 150, his Head was discovered at a custom-made grave in Ringwood's Crystal Catacombs. And emblazoned upon his tombstone was an indestructible message wrought by Herobrine's signature weapon, the Command Block."

"Written on Notch's grave was the cult's motto: The only way forward is endward."

There was a cracking sound, the gnashing of teeth, but it was so fast I couldn't tell who it came from. It could have even been me.

"It was the ultimate insult and undeniable proof that Herobrine murdered Notch." Jade went on. "No matter how many times they tried to destroy the sign—the grotesque message muddying their beloved King's final resting place—it was unbreakable. Herobrine rigged it with Command Blocks so that nobody could alter it or build over it. It would remain an eternal reminder of how the First Crafter prevailed over the Second Crafter. Their fight must've been legendary…" She murmured, eyes unfocused.

She let the silence hang after that, her tale told. We were all up to speed on the monster Herobrine was, and it shook us to our core.

Lenz had his tinted glass off, his eyes showing he was contemplating all that had been shared. He was troubled, but not angry. Not like Soul or me. The two of us were furious, our anger intensifying with every damning piece of evidence brought to our attention. How much of Minecraftia's turmoil was Herobrine's fault? How much venom had his actions seeped into this land's bones. It all came back to Herobrine.

Herobrine, Herobrine, Herobrine!

If it wasn't for him, the Hackers would have had no reason to attack the Kingdoms. The world wouldn't have to live in fear of us—I wouldn't have to hate myself so much!

I wish I never had to see or hear his name ever again. It made me too mad just thinking about all the trouble he'd caused.

Noman… Noman was clutching his head, his thoughts a whirlwind that occasionally were heard as a disbelieving mumble or whisper. He was taking this news rough, the anger struggling to catch up.

As for Cobb…

Finally, Cobb lowered his hand, ceasing his pinching, to reveal two eyes of a cloudy green. He didn't say anything as he got to his feet and walked out, Advanced Mob-Slaying still hanging from his numb fingers. He brushed past Noman, who attempted to whisper something, and ignored Jade's outstretched hand as she tried to comfort him.

He just left, too devoid of energy to even shut the door properly.

It was nearly dark, Jade's story having taken the rest of the day to explain. A shadow was cast over our faces as we processed the history of the greatest monster in Minecraftia.

With nothing else to say, Lenz promptly turned around and threw himself into piloting, trying and failing to whistle a jaunty tune to buoy our spirits.

The Asmodeus petered along above the Mess Kingdom.

[Cobb]

"Where did you get this book from anyway? Who's… uh…" I flipped to the first page again to look at the name. "Heroine. Who's Heroine?"

"That's Herobrine not Heroine. And I got that book from… him." Helena let out a dreamy sigh at that last word.

…Ok.

"So… who was he?"

"He's my hero."

"…Brine." I quipped.

"What was that?" Helena asked a bit angrily.

"Nothing."

Wanting to pass the time, I glanced down at Herobrine's first book, still sitting in my hands, and paged through it. It was just as I had remembered with Brain's photographic memory.

It was all there. Zombies. Skeletons. Spiders and Cave Spiders. Creepers.

I narrowed my eyes at the last one. I wished there was a way to edit information, because I would have put 'a fear of cats' under the weakness section. As thorough as he was, Herobrine seemed to miss a few things. Everyone was fallible, it seemed. Even the first Crafter to spawn. Though mentioning that to Helena was probably a bad idea. She practically kissed the ground he stood on.

The Book…

I turned it over in my hands, looking at the author's name again

Herobrine.

I took a quick glance around, just to verify everyone was preoccupied with something else, before I fully turned to face the book and pressed it to my forehead.

"Thanks, Herobrine." I whispered under my breath.

I owed him a lot for what his information did. It helped me survive Creepers. It helped Lenz and I escape the End. And the knowledge benefitted Wynn and Ringwood by extension when the cultists threw Creepers at them. And it was all thanks to a five-hundred-year-old guy who could be dead or alive for all anyone knew. And yet it was me who received the praise he deserved. Nobody would ever know that Herobrine's research had protected so many.

He probably never planned for it to do that much. But I wondered if, hearing all the good it did, he would smile fondly, proud of all he had done.

Helena seemed to think he was still alive. And I hoped he was too. I wanted to thank him in person. Maybe even help him work on other books considering all the new Mobs spawning from the Bounty Days.

…Why'd you do it?

The Creeper woman, trapped in a cage, praying for a Crafter to come so she could detonate herself and die right…

The Ghast woman, made into a monster by Herobrine's cruel hand…

Herobrine…

I don't understand you anymore.
