Arriving at the hospital's parking lot. Mavis quickly parked. hurriedly unbuckling her seat belt and exiting the car

Rushing towards the Chicago Meds Emergency Department's main entrance Mavis was already late for the grand opening today.

Walking quickly to the location. She mumbled to herself as she realized she had left her white coat in her car. She turned and ran back to the car, grabbing the coat and swinging it over her shoulders as she dashed to the E.D.

By the time she arrived, everyone's Pagers were going off nonstop, including hers. Maggie then came out from the E.D.

"CFD Plan 2, mass cas. Multiple trauma patients minutes away. Let's Go!" she called out. All of the doctors rushed inside to prepare for the incoming patients.

The E.D. quickly filled up as doctors ran back and forth, Paramedics rushing in and out patient after patient.

...

Mavis hurried to the entrance in order to be ready for the next patient. Mrs. Goodwin, Chief of Peoples Services at the hospital, stood by her side.

" , I'm glad to see you've shown up. I expected you to arrive early, before everyone else."

"Mrs. Goodwin, of course," Mavis smiled nervously.

"At the very least, I'm here for the mass cas," Mavis shifted her eyes to the floor. Mrs. Goodwin simply stared at her.

Mavis, As the next patient arrived, looked up. The man on the gurney was in bad shape. As the paramedics rolled him in, a man on top of him was doing chest compressions.

"28-year-old male, crush injuries, Severed artery, massive blood loss," He announced.

"Trauma Three just opened up," Maggie directed them as Mavis tailed alongside them into the room.

"Got a tourniquet on his right leg. Tried to intubate but couldn't get his Jaw open. He lost his pulse on the ride," the man said as he continued pushing his hands down onto the patient's chest.

"Well, put him on the monitor and rapid transfuser." ordered. Grab 4 units of O-neg and start with a round of Epi."

"Already hit him with the Epi times two, still no pulse. He's in fib," the man said as they made it into the room.

"Let's get him in the bay. I got it from here, man," said as she began grabbing blue gloves and putting them on.

"Nope, he's mine," the man said.

Mavis gave him a cursory glance up and down. "And I'm assuming you're a doctor yourself," she noted as she walked further into the room.

"Yeah, I'm your new trauma fellow," he turned his head and looked directly at her.

"Alright then,"

"Well I'm the new Chief Resident," Dr. Vega said. Once getting the man stable. The new trauma fellow had Mavis take over compressions.

"We should trac him," she said

"Already on it," the fellow responded "hold compressions" Mavis immediately stopped as the incision was being made.

" , you have ever done a cordis in the groin?" Mavis looked at her.

"Mhm-mm," she nodded

"Get a left femoral in there," Dr. Vega ordered

"Right," She said while applying the gel to the patient slowly. Mavis noticed and then grabbed the bottle. Squeezing it all over the area to stick the central line.

"Reese you can't take your time. Here you go now stick it.," said

Dr. Reese was having difficulty finding the vein, so Mavis ended up doing the Cordis. After that, they shocked him twice and were able to regain his pulse.

...

As she walked out of the room, removing her bloody gloves and throwing them in the trash, she noticed Sarah.

"Hey, Dr. Reese," she said as she approached her. Sarah turned around and faced her.

"Working on a real patient isn't easy, but you'll get used to it with practice," Dr. Vega smiled as she walked away.

"Hey Maggie, let Dr. Charles know Jamie just came in," Mrs. Goodwin informed her as the 20-year-old was being placed in the room across from them.

"I can do it," said walking up to them. "That's fine," Mrs. Goodwin nodded.

"Hey Dr. Charles," Mavis grinned as she approached him.

"Oh why hello, . How are you doing today?" His face lit up when he saw her. with an Ipad in his hand.

"I'm fine; I just wanted to let you know that Jamie is back in the E.D." Mavis stated as she walked alongside Dr. Charles.

"Okay, lead me to him," said Dr. Charles.

"Umm..."

"Dr. Charles, I was wondering when I could return to Psych. because I don't think I'm cut out to be Chief of Emergency Medicine," Dr. Vega babbled

I mean, just because my mother could do it doesn't mean I can-

Dr. Charles then raised his head from the Ipad and looked Mavis in the eyes. "Evelyn was a great chief in her own right."

"You don't have to be a carbon copy of your mother. Make your best effort in your own unique way. You can also assist me with psych patients at any time." Dr. Charles explained

They made their way over to Jamie's room, where they parted ways. Mavis was then paged to Will and Ethan's patient.

...

Entering the room Samuel was inserting a bolt into the head of a woman. Will and another nurse greeted her as well.

"Hello, Dr. Abrams. I was paged here," walking in, Dr. Vega said. Examining the woman's chart.

"Why am I putting in this Bolt? Dr. Abrams complained. "Where's my good-for-nothing resident."

"Your good for nothing resident put in her 12 hours. Had to knock off," Dr. Vega crossed her arms.

These new rules... Ridiculous and bad for medicine," Abram sighed. Putting down his equipment.

"Oh, I'm so tired. Oh, I can't work." he mocked.

"Everybody so dammed spoiled the whole generation."

"Yeah, we get it Dr. Abrams, the whole world and it's good for nothing generation sucks," Dr. Vega rolled her eyes.

At that point, a woman entered the room. She was Mrs. Donahue, and she was also the biological mother of Gina's baby. Who was the patient

Samuel finished up and left the room. "Is she going to be okay... and the baby?" Mrs. Donahue stammered.

"From her chart, the baby checks out fine," Dr. Vega said. "Healthy heartbeat, Amniotic sac, and placenta are intact," she finished.

"Gina though suffered a traumatic head injury and so far, she's unresponsive," Dr. Halstead said his hands together.

After further discussion with Mrs. Donahuge, Will and Mavis informed her that even if the worst were to happen, they could still keep Gina alive long enough for the fetus to become viable.

...

Mavis was walking through the E.D. It became much more tranquil. While walking, she noticed the E.D's new Trauma fellow and decided to walk into the room he was in.

"Woah, how did that happen?" Mavis noticed the gash on his arm as he was sowing it up.

"Must have snagged it on the wreckage," he said.

"You know we do have a couple of doctors around here," Dr. Vega noted "I could hook you up."

"I don't need one, but since I assume you're a doctor I could use you though," he said still sowing up his arm.

"Come be my other hand," he said

"Oh, nice," Dr. Vega looked down at his wound. "You closed that like a plastic surgeon," Where'd you pick that up?" She smirked.

"Riyadh. Spent a year thereafter my residency. Saudis paid me well not to leave unsightly scars." he responded

"Could you pinch those two sides together," he said as Mavis finished gloving up.

Placing both her index fingers on his arm pinching the wound together. "What about a tetanus shot?"

"No, I am current, Mavis, uh..."

"Mavis Vega." He said looking down at her ID. Badge

"English? Irish?" he looked at her.

"My family's from Both Spain and France."

"So what's your name?" "Dr. Trauma Fellow," Mavis grinned back at him.

"Conner Rhodes," he said

"So, where you from? Dr. Rhodes"

"Chicago. Born and bred he said. Been away for a while."

"Welcome home," Dr. Vega continued to smile. Conner returned the grin.

Daniel was walking by seeing the two of them through the see-through door. "Who's young Rambo over there?" he asked walking beside Sharon and Maggie.

"Oh, that's Conner Rhodes the new trauma fellow," Mrs. Goodwind said.

"He's gonna lit up some estrogen receptors around here," Dr. Charles said.

"I'll say. He lit mine," Maggie joked

"Well, that's all I need," Mrs. Goodwin looked at maggie.

...

After finishing up helping with sowing up Conners's arms Mavis made her way into the break room where she saw Will.

"Well, there's something I don't often see. Will Halstead looking stumped." Dr. Vega said as she entered the room.

"Why is it brain injuries are never like the ones you read in the textbooks?" He got up from his seat at the computer and walked over to pour himself a cup of coffee.

"Well the human brain is a mystery," Dr. Vega said sitting down.

"why what happened?"

"My pregnant TBI patient, bilateral contusions."

"She was a GCS 3. And now, all of a sudden, she's exhibiting movement, and she's improved to a 6.," Dr. Halstead said pouring himself a cup of coffee.

"Well, that's good news," Dr. Vega said.

"Yeah."

"The baby's parents will be happy."

"You meet the new guy yet, Rhodes?" Dr. Vega asked turning to face Will

"You could say that. Likes to throw his weight around. I don't know, strikes me as a little arrogant," Dr. Halstead said.

Mavis arched her brow at him after hearing that statement. "Hey, I am not arrogant," Will pointed his finger at her.

"No, no. Not at all. You just happen to know more than anybody else. " Dr. Vega shook her head

"So, how about you, Dr. Opportunist," Dr. Halstead retorted

"What exactly does that mean?" Mavis cocked her head to look at Will.

"Weren't in psychiatry before, and now you're the Chief of Emergency Medicine. Just because your mother died."

"Okay, I'm going to need you to stop right there." Mavis motioned with her hand for Will to stop.

"That was incredibly rude. I would have thought that because you and I both lost a parent to cancer, you would have a little more empathy."

"Apart from that, my mother's previous position had nothing to do with me being picked." Dr. Vega chided.

Well, I just thought I let you know that I don't think that it's fair," Dr. Halstead said.

"Guess what? I already discussed handing over the Chief position to you with Mrs. Goodwin, and you know what she said..."

"No!"

"So, if you still want to have a stick your ass up about it. As your Chief Resident, I recommend that you either talk to Mrs. Goodwin or suck it up and focus on saving your patients," Dr. Vega exploded

"And you want to say that you are not arrogant," Dr. Vega scoffed as she exited the room.

...

Natalie then assigned Sarah to check on her patient Rachel. While Mavis was walking through the E.D., the alarm for code blue began to sound, and she ran into the room where Sarah was administering chest compressions to the young girl.

Mavis kicked over the chair. "You're not compressing the heart, Sarah."

"You got to go harder," Dr. Vega said. As other nurses rushed into the room to assist with the monitor.

"But she's so small," Dr. Reese said, "I don't-"

Mavis cut her off "Harder! Do it, let's go! Dr. Vega raised her voice a little.

"Come on, Sarah! Harder!" Sarah pushed down on Rachel's chest, breaking one of her ribs,

"Hold," Dr. Vega said.

"There we go. Back in sinus. Get a BP." She said looking at the monitor.

"What happened?" Dr. Manning said gloving up and walking into the room.

"She arrested. we got her back," Dr. Vega looked at Natalie.

Natalie then had Rachel rush out of the room heading to the PICU. leaving only Mavis and Sarah.

"Good Job," Dr. Vega said to Sarah.

"I-I I just broke a little girl's ribs," Dr. Reese stuttered with a shaky breath.

"Reese, what matters is that you just save that little girl's life," Mavis placed her hands on her shoulders.

...

Dr. Halstead's patient Gina and her baby made it out of surgery just fine at the end of a long shift. Unfortunately, Conner's patient Jorge did not survive.

Mavis made her way to her favorite spot in the hospital to clear her mind when she arrived. She noticed Conner.

"It's your first day and you already found my hiding spot," Dr. Vega said joining him and looking out over the city of Chicago.

"I don't suppose you keep a bottle stashed up here, do you?" Dr. Rhodes said

"I wish," Dr. Vega smirked.

"I heard about your patient. Tough one," she looked at him.

"Yeah," he said

"I just keep wondering..."

"If there's anything else you could've done?" Dr. Vega finished his sentence.

"Trust me I know," she sighed.

"Well I'm here if you need someone to talk to about it," she offered. Conner looked at her and just smiled nodding his head.

Fortunately for Jamie, Jorge was a match, and after speaking with Miriana, she agreed to a lung transplant.

Before Mavis got ready to leave. She noticed Sarah practicing on a dummy patient and went to check on her.

...

"Central line," Dr. Vega chimed as Sarah was sticking the dummy with the needle.

"I can't tell you how many times I missed before I finally got it," she added

"I know how to do it. I just couldn't do it in there," Dr. Reese said.

"it takes practice, that's all."

"I'm fine with him I never miss," Dr. Reese looked at Mavis

"Yeah. he's the ideal patient." "You can't hurt him and his life's not hanging in the balance."

"If this rotation weren't a requirement. I wouldn't be here," Dr. Reese took out her earbuds.

"Where would be? Pathology?" Mavis arched her brow.

"Maybe."

"I'm a Lab person."

"Every med student, once they start dealing with patients, thinks they'd do better in Pathology. I know I did," Dr. Vega said.

"Just keep doing your best, that's all anyone asks for," Mavis said before walking out of the room. and going home.
