Hey guys! Welcome to my new story. I'm going through a complicated time right now, as I'm still unemployed. And I saw the first animated crossover between Superman and Batman World's Finest from the Bruce Timm universe.
I am still disgusted that we do not have the conclusion of the plot with Mia Smoak at the end of season 8.
So I'm using Mia as a Green Arrow. Not William. And it doesn't follow the continuity of the Arrowverse.
Good reading!
Chapter 1: The Protectors of the World
Star City
The storm came without warning. A flash of lightning illuminated the face of Mia Queen, who was standing in front of a memorial statue, located in the middle of a park. That of the late hero, Green Arrow. Formerly protector of Star City. He had fought and defended the city's residents for many decades. Until the day he sacrificed himself for the city, saving several hundred thousand people in the process. All the inhabitants were indebted to him for still being alive, thanks to his sacrifice. But for Mia, it was a hard sorrow. Because Green Arrow wasn't just a hero to her. He had also been Oliver Queen, her father. A father she had known briefly in her life. A man who owned a company called Queen Consolidated. And since Mia had reached the legal age to take over the reins of the company, she had discovered a secret room leading to an underground cellar containing several bows and arrows. That was how she found out her father was Green Arrow. After that, she fashioned an suit similar to Green Arrow and took up her bow and arrows again, aiming to honor his memory by continuing to defend the city.
That evening, Mia had to go patrolling the city, tracking down criminals or delinquents. But first, she took the time to reflect in front of the statue of the former hero of Star City.
After a moment of contemplation, Mia murmured in front of the dark sculpture of her late father.
"How many years have passed? How many years have I lost you? Since you left me with Mom? I was very young. I barely knew you. Ever since I learned that you are... that you were Green Arrow... I've tried to prove myself worthy of you, I really have. But everything I've done doesn't fill the void inside me. The fact of not having known you well enough. I so wanted you to be part of my life. With Mom and John. Am I capable of being Green Arrow like you were? Should I continue doing what you started? Am I capable of making a difference?"
Then, she remained silent again as she remained kneeling in front of the statue, hoping to feel her father's presence.
Finally, the ringing of her phone brought her out of her thoughts. She read the number displayed. It was John Diggle. Former military. Former partner of her father. Today, he worked as an agent within the American federal agency ARGUS, and was also Mia's godfather and main ally in her fight to protect Star City. She saw him as a surrogate father, because he had practically raised her with her mother. And he knew her secret.
"Hi John. Do you have anything for me?"
John's voice was not long in coming.
"Hello Mia. There are reports of human trafficking on the docks of Star City. According to our undercover agent," Deathstroke is involved.
At the mention of this name, Mia stood up. Deathstroke, a fearsome mercenary trained to murder and disappear like a ghost. He led the Deathstroke Clan. At the head of several illegal trafficking operations in Star City. Several corrupt bureaucrats were under his influence. He had free rein to besiege the entire city. But Mia had stood in his way, and was doing everything to bring down his malicious network. She refused to dishonor her father's sacrifice by leaving Star City in the hands of this psychopath.
Resolute, the young Queen got up and left the park.
On the docks of Star City, two dark trucks had just parked in front of a boat. A small group of men in black outfits dragged a handful of young girls, all aged 16 or 17, into a shipping container, who would end up living a life of sexual servitude. The kidnappers made them advance violently towards the container, without the slightest empathy for their prisoners.
"We all work for a company where men from all over the world buy girls like you to be their wives," one of the dark men said to them with a sneer on his lips. "Tonight you are all leaving for Russia. You will have a wonderful long stay there."
The girls moved forward, moaning in terror at the thought of becoming objects of perversion.
Behind the would-be human traffickers, a green figure stood a few miles away from them.
"And you guys are going to have a wonderful long stay in slammer!"
Everyone heard a voice distorted by a voice modulator.
The human traffickers turned and saw a young woman dressed in green with a hood covering her face, brandishing a bow with an arrow.
"You have failed this city!"
Before any of the men could react, she punched one of them in the face with her fist. He fell to the ground with a groan. And she shot an arrow which caused a lasso to spring up, trapping another trafficker.
Then, she dodged the punch of one of the thugs running towards her and punched her partner several times before turning around and shooting an arrow at the man as he ran at her again.
Green Arrow looked around and saw that the men were unconscious. She walked towards the girls who were still very scared. She put away her bow and raised her hands to reassure them.
"Are you all right? Aren't you hurt?" she asked, glancing around at the captives, checking for any visible injuries. "They didn't touch you? "
The victims shook their heads. Their savior nodded, relieved.
"Leave the docks, go west and find the first police officer on patrol. Ask him for backups."
The teenage girls nodded as one of them grabbed their savior by the arm and thanked her before running with the rest of the former captives.
As Green Arrow watched the girls leave, she noticed three dark figures approaching her. All three wore masks in two different colors. Black on the right side and orange on the left side. Deathstroke's henchmen.
She brandishes her bow. One of Deathstroke's men ran towards her brandishing a saber. Green Arrow dodged her blow, with the skill of a martial arts disciple. She returned fire with her bow and fought the man. Quick as lightning, she fired an arrow which hit a lackey of the mercenary who finished him off. Then she fought the other two using her bow as a baton. She tripped, knocking down a man, then hit the last man with a punch to the sternum.
She came towards one of the human traffickers tied up with a lasso arrow. With her foot, she pushed him to the ground and planted him on the stomach of the trafficker who trembled with fear at the sight of the vigilante.
Green Arrow aimed her bow at the trafficker's head while communicating with her voice modulator.
"Deathstroke is behind this human trafficking! Where were you supposed to take these girls?"
"Somewhere in Russia. To a Russian prime minister," stammered the trafficker, trembling with fear.
"Where's Deathstroke? Where is he ? Tell me where I can find him?"
Shortly after, the police arrived on the docks to take charge of the traffickers and the girls held prisoner.
One of the police officers called on his phone.
"Sir, we have a problem on the docks. Our cargo is compromised. Green Arrow stepped in and beat all of our men. She's on her way to you."
"It doesn't matter. She will arrive too late." the distorted voice on the other end of the line replied. "I'm leaving for Metropolis. Make sure you erase all traces so they don't come back to us."
"Yes sir," agreed the corrupt cop.
As soon as he hung up, a gun was pointed at his head. A black man took aim at him.
"Hey dude! Agent Diggle of ARGUS. And you're under arrest."
Immediately, the cop was handcuffed and taken away by Diggle.
"Wait ! I'm a police officer! I work for the SCPD! I represent the law, dude!"
Diggle chuckled in amusement.
"It's been months since we infiltrated your network. We know that Deathstroke sent you several bribes. You will have to report to the authorities."
Green Arrow was speeding on her motorcycle towards the warehouse indicated by the trafficker. She arrived on the scene. Cautiously, she left her motorcycle and went to for recon. She looked around the warehouse, but saw no one. The place seemed abandoned. Several leftover meals were scattered on the ground, but there were no signs of guns, which was surprising.
Finally, she noticed a white card on the ground. Picking it up, the vigilante noticed that it was a joker card.
Frowning, Green Arrow observed the map as she left the area.
As she returned to her motorcycle, she heard screams coming from a dumpster. Intrigued, she came to the garbage container. As she opened it, she noticed a man in a brown suit laughing hysterically. His eyes wide open. The hilarious man let drool flow from his mouth.
Perplexed, Green Arrow recognized this man as one of Star City's crime lords. What was he doing in a dumpster? Why was he laughing hysterically?
She looked at the joker card again and returned her attention to the hilarious man.
Mia knew what that meant. The Joker's signature. Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime. What was he doing in Star City?
She contacted her ally.
"Dig. Deathstroke's gone, again. But it looks like he got a visit from Joker."
Diggle was stunned.
"The Joker ? Gotham's psychopathic clown? What makes you say that?"
"I just found Salvatore Maroni in a dumpster. He keeps laughing hysterically. It's the Joker's signature," replied Green Arrow, getting on her motorcycle.
"What would that lunatic do to Star City?" Diggle exclaimed, still intrigued. "And why would Deathstroke ally with such a madman?"
"I don't know. But I'm about to find out. I'm going to Gotham City. Maybe I'll have some new info on Deathstroke."
"Are you planning to go to Gotham? Batman's city?" Diggle wondered.
Mia had never met Batman, although she had heard of him often. He had a reputation as a madman who attacked criminals.
"If I ever meet him, I'll tell him that I'm on the Joker's lead." she explained casually. "We do the same job."
"You know he has a reputation for being crazy and what's more, he prefers to work alone. ARGUS has already offered him to work for us, but he always said no."
"You know that I don't work for ARGUS either," replied Green Arrow, starting her motorcycle. "I'm going to Gotham. I call you later."
She revved her motorcycle and drove off into the night.
Gotham City
The rain was raging in the great dark city. The storm was brewing. It was a strange start to the evening.
In an antique store, the store owner was closing his business. He had just hung the CLOSED sign. He was about to close the door when a foot came to block the door.
A strange dark-haired woman with dark glasses carrying a box over her shoulder forced her way into the store.
"Hang on there, Clyde."
"Sorry, miss, we're closed." objected the owner.
"Just look at what I'm selling. You'll plotz." the woman said, taking out a strange music box.
She pulled the crank on the box, making a little music sound like a circus. Then, the head of a spring-loaded Joker emerged and sprayed a strange gas on the unfortunate man who suffocated.
When the gas cleared, the owner of the antique shop started laughing hysterically.
The strange woman was none other than Harley Quinn. The Joker's accomplice. Furthermore, the latter entered the store.
"Good work, Harley girl." he exclaimed, removing his accomplice's camouflage. "Now, what would be a suitable trade for our joke-in-the-box?"
All proud with his usual sinister grin on his face, the Joker entered the store. He roughly pushed the store owner who was still in a fit of laughing fits. The Clown pretended to be interested in the ancient objects displayed on the shelves. When his gaze fell on a statuette of a Chinese jade dragon, his ecstasy was amplified.
"For some reason, this just speaks to me."
He turned to his sidekick.
"What do you think, Harl?"
"It's you, Pudding." replied Harley happily, opening the crate she was carrying.
The Joker grabbed the jade statue and had to pull with all his might due to its weight. After some effort, he tore it from its base and put it in Harley's crate. She groaned while panting because of the heavy weight of the statuette.
Shortly after, both left the store, greeting the owner who was the victim of the Joker's laughing gas.
"Awfully nice doing business with you. Ta. What a pleasant fellow."
On the roof of the Gotham City Police Department, the Bat-Signal projector was on, projecting the bat sign into the dark Gotham sky.
The vigilante Batman came and landed on the roof of the building.
"Commissioner Gordon?"
Someone turned off the projector. Batman noticed that it was Green Arrow.
"Hello Bats! Nice to meet you !" the Star City's vigilante told him in a neutral tone. "I didn't have your phone number, so I had to use that to reach you."
Batman remained neutral against the emerald vigilante and crossed his arms.
"What are you doing here ? Gotham doesn't need you! Go back to Star City!"
Despite Batman's lack of enthusiasm, Green Arrow walked towards him.
"Relax, I didn't come to your town to intrude! I'm tracking Deathstroke!"
"What makes you think he's here?" Batman asked her, still in a neutral tone.
"Not him. I'm looking for the Joker," explained Green Arrow. "Your psycho clown was in my city. He used his laughing gas on a well-known gangster in Star City. Apparently your Joker approached Deathstroke, he left afterwards. And Deathstroke flew away, like he always does. I was hoping to find the Joker so he could tell me where to find my guy. Since he is one of your enemies, you know him better than me. And I thought we'd work together to get our hands on him. We catch him, I make him speak for Deathstroke, after that you can take him back to your insane asylum and I'm going home."
There was a silence. Batman remained motionless like a statue still with his arms crossed in front of the emerald vigilante, then finally retorted.
"Joker leaving Gotham for Star City doesn't look like him at all. Especially since there is no connection between him and Deathstroke. However, before coming here, I intercepted a police call. Joker and Harley Quinn robbed an antique store. Only one item was stolen."
"That could be a good lead to start with," added Green Arrow, delighted to have a new lead. "We're going there together ? Or do you prefer to act alone as you always do?"
Batman seemed to hesitate, then finally replied.
"Alright ! But you are in my city. My city. My rules. Got it?"
Green Arrow nodded neutrally, with a happy smile on his face.
"Your city. Your rules. Copy that, Boss!"
Several police vehicles surrounded the antique store that had been robbed by the Joker.
Inside, Commissioner James Gordon observed the ransacked scene, while Detective Harvey Bullock stood near where the green statuette had been stolen.
"It's weird. All this junk and the Joker only takes one lousy statue!"
"Especially since word on the street says he's desperate for cash these days." Gordon added, joining him.
"Things are never what they seem with the Joker." replied Batman, coming out of the shadows with Green Arrow behind him.
"We should expect the unexpected with this weirdo," added the Star City's vigilante.
Unlike the commissioner, Bullock didn't like vigilantes. He stared at the two masked intruders, growling furiously.
"I guess the night brings out all the wackos."
"Oh, go get a donut instead of wiggling like a bulldog." retorted Green Arrow annoyed.
Batman examined the stand where the jade statue was and picked up some jade scraps which he took with him. Green Arrow also retrieved some fragments from the rack.
"It was made of jade, worth maybe a hundred grand." Gordon explained.
"I'd like a closer look." Batman replied, still neutral, without looking at anyone.
Without saying anything else, the two vigilantes left the store, much to the dismay of Bullock who went to complain to Gordon.
"Hey. They can't leave a crime scene with evidence."
Gordon condescendingly placed his hand on his colleague's shoulder.
"You want to stop them, be my guest."
Bullock turned around to find that Batman and Green Arrow had both disappeared. As if they had flown away.
"Batman's enlisting Robin Hood in his circle of freaks now? One Robin was enough!" he grumbled, throwing his hat to the ground.
Batman had returned to his Batcave, examining the remains of jade he had taken from the crime scene with the help of a laser.
His faithful butler Alfred joined him with a book.
"According to this, the Laughing Dragon has earned quite a foreboding reputation. Ever since it was carved in China thirty nearly years ago it has passed through several owners, all of whom died prematurely."
"And I can tell you why." Batman replied, taking the bottle where he stored one of the remains of the statue. "This so-called jade is emitting low-level radiation. Alfred, isn't Bruce Wayne about due for a trip to Metropolis?"
"Yes, but do you think this is an appropriate time?" asked Alfred.
"I'd say the timing couldn't be better." replied Batman, putting the fragment in one of the pockets of his belt.
"What about Miss Queen?" added the butler. "Will you help her achieve her goal?"
"I did it, " Batman replied with an amused smile.
After moving away from Batman, Green Arrow had traveled throughout Gotham on her motorcycle looking for the Joker or Deathstroke. But neither had been seen. She had returned to her city empty-handed.
Upon her arrival, she passed the jade fragments to Diggle for examination in one of the ARGUS labs. It was obvious that the Joker had not stolen the statuette to enrich himself. He could very well have stolen the store's inventory. Why settle for a simple jade statue? And right after talking to Deathstroke in Star City?
It was late at night when Mia returned to her penthouse. She picked up the mail and came to lie down on her couch. She was tired. But she wanted to have news about the jade statuette.
She contacted Diggle while checking his mail. She then noticed a letter from Bruce Wayne of Wayne Enterprises in Gotham. Why would the very famous billionaire send her a letter?
Diggle answered her call.
"Mia? Do you ever sleep? Did you see what time it is?"
"Has ARGUS analyzed the fragments I brought you?" Mia asked, ignoring her godfather's question.
"Yes, and it's not jade," Diggle replied. "It's meteor fragments."
"What?" Mia wondered, intrigued. "Did the Joker steal a statue made from meteorite?"
"Yeah, and apparently, this statue has acquired a very bad reputation," continued her godfather. "Before being displayed at this store in Gotham, it had several owners who are all now dead. And we know that Deathstroke was interested in meteorites. Meteorites used for weapons of destruction against a certain alien."
Mia looked stunned. She knew that some criminals had turned to meteorites ever since Superman appeared in Metropolis. Did the Joker steal this statue in order to attack the Man of Steel? The psychopathic clown was crazy, but not stupid enough to attack Superman without a weapon that could put him down.
"Are you thinking of Superman? Is that why the Joker stole this statue?" Mia asked.
"That's the only explanation," Diggle replied. "According to our agents, Deathstroke left town, right after speaking with Gotham's weirdo. He might well go to Metropolis."
Mechanically, Mia had opened the envelope which contained the letter from Bruce Wayne that she had received. Her eyes widened in ecstasy as she read it. The Gotham billionaire invited her to join him in Metropolis for a merger between Wayne Enterprises, LexCorp and Queen Consolidated. A reason to go to Metropolis. A perfect cover for Green Arrow.
"Mia, do you want me to ask my agents to take you to Metropolis?" Diggle asked on the other end of the line.
Remembering her communication, Mia responded ecstatically, her eyes fixed on the letter.
"That won't be necessary. I'll take the Queen Consolidated plane. It turns out that our famous Gotham personality invites me to join him in Metropolis to oversee a cooperative merger with Lex Luthor. Bruce Wayne will do Green Arrow a favor without knowing it."
"Wayne invites you to Metropolis?" her godfather wondered. "At the same time the Joker and Deathstroke are there? Is this a really weird coincidence?"
"A merger between three companies could be beneficial for Queen Consolidated." Mia replied. "I also have to run a company in addition to my night job. I'll take the plane tomorrow."
Lois Lane was one of the journalists invited aboard the presidential plane for a major event. For the moment, the flight took place without the slightest incident.
Until…
Armed individuals stormed the plane. Two men in uniform arrived, which worried the other passengers.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, if you stay calm, you may actually live to write about this." smiled the first man before taking out a walkie-talkie. "Is the President secured?"
Lois runs to the phone so it can be vaporized. She gasped in fright and was forced to sit in her seat. The terrorist tightened her belt.
"Let's make an example of this hero." he suggested to the other passengers, threatening them with his gun.
He approached Lois with an evil smile.
"A very tragic example, I'm afraid, Miss... ?"
"Lane," Lois told him with determination.
"Lane?" asked the stunned mercenary who erased his grin. "Lois Lane? The one Superman always saves?"
"Afraid so." retorted the female journalist with amusement.
At that point, the plane began to shake and tilted to the left. Outside the plane, Superman leaned on one of the wings, flipping the air transport upside down.
The terrorists were shaken and thrown to the ceiling, while the passengers were securely strapped to their seats, upside down. Lois found herself upside down and addressed the terrorists with amusement.
"Thanks for strapping me in."
The man looked at her with annoyance and pain. The plane was quickly turned around and the door opened, depressurizing the plane. All objects were sucked outwards, then it was the terrorists. Along the way, they were punched in the face by the Man of Steel.
Very quickly, the Air Force One plane was safely on the ground at Metropolis Airport. The press filmed the exchanges between Superman and the President of the United States who was in his limousine.
"Happy I could help out, Mr. President." greeted the Man of Steel, before the limousine drove away.
Then he joined Lois.
"I hope I didn't shake you and the others up too badly."
"I hate to say, I've gotten used to it." agreed the young woman with a tired tone.
Superman was about to fly away when Lois called him again, trembling with embarrassment:
"How can I put this? I was just thinking, it might be nice to see each other... when I wasn't, I don't know, falling out a window or something. I'm grateful for all the times you've helped me, you understand..."
"I understand." replied the savior of Metropolis in a very calm tone.
"You do?"
But an explosion in the distance interrupted their discussion.
"It's the First National Bank." said Superman about to fly away.
"You'd better go. People might..." Lois said before noticing that Superman had already left. "...Get hurt."
And she started walking, imagining conversations with Superman.
"'l understand, Lois.' 'Really, you do?' 'Yep. You're a complete moron.' 'Why, thank you, Superman. I think I'm a total loser too.' Jeez."
Thanks for reading.
I wanted to make a story with Batman, to pay tribute to the late Kevin Conroy (RIP) who passed away on November 10, 2022. Batman's one and only voice. We will miss you.
And without forgetting, of course, Arleen Sorkin (voice of Harley Quinn) who also passed away on August 24, 2023. RIP.
In this story, Diggle is Mia's partner. She calls him John when she's in civilian life, and when she's Green Arrow, she calls him Dig.
Mia as Green Arrow will have similarities with Oliver from the Arrow series, but also inspired by the Green Arrow comics.
