Chapter 1
Christian was busy working as usual. He worked all day and brought his work home at night. It was tough running a business, but he had a great number two in Ros Bailey. He trusted her and everyone did as well. "Mr. Grey, Ms Bailey is here." Christian never even looked up at Gail. She had been working for him for a year. He found Gail through Jason Taylor, his head of security. They were dating and he trusted anyone that Taylor did.
Ros was Christian's age. They met at Harvard and she knew his secrets. Christian wanted his own business before college, but college was the only way to get his trust fund. When Christian decided to drop out after 2 years, he told Ros to come to Seattle after she finished. He had borrowed money from Elena Lincoln without her rich husband knowing. Elena was his mother's best friend. "Christian, we need to talk."
Ros knew exactly who Elena Lincoln was. She was at his apartment working on a project when she was surprised by her visit. Ros remembered her walking in with a dress too short for her age and high heels. She looked Ros up and down. "What's going on here? She's far from your type Christian. You don't date black girls." Ros was pissed and hated her ever since.
Christian not only told Elena to leave, he told Ros the truth. "She's my mother's best friend." Ros immediately knew that was wrong. "We have been involved sexually since I was 15." Ros was mortified. He told her about the beatings, sleeping with brunettes his age at first and then older, and his life before the Greys." Ros tried to talk sense into him then and when he was dropping out to borrow the money.
She looked at her friend, so calm and collected, but deep down he was just that hurt 15 year old boy. He left his computer open and waited. "Ros? Hello? Are you there?" Ros snapped out of her daydream and handed him a folder. "What am I looking at?"
Ros sighed, she had done her research. "You're looking at what you already know deep down. That bitch is taking full advantage of you." Christian smiled, he knew who that bitch was. This was a constant battle ever since they met. "Did you know Elena has been lying about the money?" Christian nodded he was aware and he reminded her of what happened after the money. He owed her.
After she gave him the money for his business. Her husband Linc, broke her arm, cracked her ribs, and then forced himself on her. "Christian don't give me that shit. She forced herself on you for years. And you pay for all the good brunette pussy she finds for you." Christian eyes shot up.
Ros was the only woman that would dare talk to him like that. "Oh that's right you would be nothing if she hadn't funded your company." Christian gripped the folder. "Yeah, you know huh? Keep reading. She's taking your money, the money she owes you from investments and creating more you don't know about." Christian looked, she had been traveling lately. "Did you know she purchased a building in New York and stayed in your penthouse for two weeks?" Christian had no idea. "Christian, these aren't legit spas, she's got underage girls and boys. She's doing what she did to you." He saw the money adding up. "I think your debt is paid. Christian, I've never approved of her. I think if you can let her go, your life would get better. Sooner or later, we can't keep blaming her. You are a grown adult. Open your eyes."
Ros stood up to leave as she said her peace. "Can you make sure she's on the schedule tomorrow?" Ros turned around. Christian Grey finally heard her. She reminded him that Kate Kavanagh from WSUV was also on the schedule. She was coming to interview him for the article since he was speaking at the graduation. They both knew her father from the business world. It was more of a favor. He hated interviews. "Have them schedule Elena first thing." Ros knew he was hurt. "Thank you Ros."
When she left Christian looked at the funds. He knew she was taking advantage, but this was betrayal. That's what their relationship always was, he just didn't see it. He put the papers in his bag. When he walked out he saw Gail and Taylor talking at the bar. He said goodnight to them. He wished he could have a normal relationship like them. He wanted to go in his playroom and get rid of his tension, but the only people he could call were attached to Elena Lincoln. She owned his life, not just his lifestyle.
The next morning he was up, dressed, and at work before everyone. He heard his receptionists coming in and getting the office set up. "Mr. Grey, Mrs. Lincoln is here." He stood looking at the city. He never even turned around hearing her heels clicking against the floor.
She walked in, "Christian, what's this about. Do you know what Linc thought when the phone went off? And what was wrong with Leila? You know you're going through girls faster than I can replace them."
Christian didn't move. "All of your businesses are now closed. I've pulled the money records." Elena looked at the file on the desk labeled with her name. "And you won't fight me on any of it or I will turn those files over to the Seattle and New York police." Elena didn't make a sound. "I was foolish to think you cared about me. You're evil and some of it falls on me, but this will fall on you. Don't contact my mother or come near us. I don't care what lie you have to tell. If I see you, your secrets will no longer be hidden. Get out!"
He knew he shocked her. He never turned around at all. She left and he just looked out of the window. "Mr. Grey, Miss Kavanagh is here." He heard some babbling about a mistake. The next thing he heard was a smack on the floor. A pen rolled to his foot and when he turned around. He saw the most beautiful brunette with blue eyes spread on her hands and knees.
He picked up the pen and looked at her. He immediately got hard. He was already losing it. "Who are you? You aren't Katherine Kavanagh." Christian knew one thing, someone was getting fired. He put his hands in his pockets to adjust his problem. Then he helped her up.
She apologized and was clearly embarrassed. "I'm Anastasia Steele. I tried to explain that but they move so fast. Kate, I mean Miss Kavanagh has the flu, so she asked me to fill in. Kate's my best friend and roommate. I guess she trusted me to help."
Christian extended his hand and introduced himself properly. "So are you studying journalism as well?" Ana shook her head and explained English Lit. Christian wouldn't last. "Well, I only have 10 minutes." He handed her the pen and offered her a seat. Christian was relieved to sit. The only thing he wanted to do was bend her over his desk, spank her pale ass, and fuck her good.
Ana felt a little chill and regretted giving her jacket to the receptionist. Christian watched her set the recorder out and open her notebook. She looked up at him staring. "Ready?" He giggled and said whenever she was. "Right. Ummm so this is your special for the student paper." He agreed stating he was giving the commencement address. "You are? I mean I knew that." She started rattling off the questions on the paper. She was nervous. She listened to him talk and watched him. "You sound like a control freak." Ana bit her lip as soon as she heard it escape her mouth.
Christian rose up to sit in front of her, now feeling more like himself. Anastasia Steele was a challenge. "I actually exercise control in all things, Miss Steele." Ana didn't know what it was. Maybe it was the way he stretched out the word all. She had a problem, the more he spoke the wetter she became.
She carried on with the interview asking about his company. He was very businesslike. They found themselves staring at each other. She told him he had a big heart after learning about his volunteer efforts. "Most people say I don't have a heart." She questioned him. "They know me well." Ana frowned.
She looked at the paper. "Do you have any hobbies outside of work?" He gave a normal answer. "You're unmarried and you were adopted at age 4." Christian stood up. Ana thought she unset him. She began to feel foolish for not reading up on the person she was interviewing. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean…" Ana was rattled after he asked if she had an actual question. She looked down and said the first question she saw. "Are you gay?" She couldn't believe what flew out of her mouth. She cursed Kate under her breath. "I didn't mean to ask that. It's written here. I'm sorry."
He smiled. "No Anastasia, I'm not gay." Ana nervously chewed her pen. "What about you? Why don't you ask me something you want to know instead of reading that paper?" Christian waited.
Ana smiled, "Earlier, you said that there are people who know you well, why do I get the feeling that is not true at all." The receptionist interrupted. He had his next meeting. Ana stopped the recorder. "Cancel it." Ana tried to excuse herself. "No, I want to know more about you. Was it Jane Austen or Thomas Hardy that made you fall in love with English Lit." Ana smiled saying Hardy. "I would have guessed Austen."
The more they spoke the more pink her cheeks became. Christian wanted to make her lower cheeks pink. "What are your plans after you graduate?" Ana didn't have a plan, not even a job like Kate. Kate had an internship at the Seattle Times. Ana was hoping to at least become an assistant at a publishing company. "Well, you could always work here."
Ana saw the women and she didn't think she had a chance. Everyone was blonde, she wasn't even his type. "I should go, thank you for putting up with me." Ana stood up fully flushed in her face. She walked quickly to the elevator trying not to look back. When she turned to hit the button she was shocked that he was standing right there. She didn't hear him follow her. "Have a great day Mr. Grey." Then the doors closed.
