Chapter 1: Bridge Out
I stretched as I woke up, the landscape zoomed by outside the window. We were still in Jimmy Gibbs stock car, I thought by now we would surely have been to New Orleans, or at least close to it. But then again, I had no earthly idea how far New Orleans was from Savannah. Ellis was driving, focused on the road and the other three were asleep in the back. I couldn't help but stare at Ellis' arms, how his muscles bulged out from under his sleeves. He looked over at me, "How'd ya sleep?" He smiled at me, I diverted my gaze and blushed.
Surely he caught me staring, "I uh... I slept okay. I-I mean, as well as you can sleep being cramped up in a car." I side glanced over and saw him smirk a little, he totally caught me checking him out. I slouched in my seat and covered myself with my hoodie to hide my embarrassment.
In the back seat someone shifted, "Shit... How long was I out for?" Nick asked,
"Not long enough." I muttered through my hoodie,
"I heard that." He kicked the back of my seat,
"Don't kick my seat." I glared back at him,
"What are you going to do about it?"
"I'll come back there and kick your ass."
"Will you two shut up?" Rochelle asked as she stretched,
"Seriously, I'll turn this car around." Ellis said. Nick and I exchanged glares before I turned back in my seat.
I leaned my head against the window and watched the scenery go by, nobody said much though I supposed there wasn't much to really say. We just barely escaped the mall with our lives and now we were on the brink of getting to safety, at least thats what the hope was. We were driving in silence for what seemed like hours before we came across a town, there were buildings lining the street and in a way it almost reminded me of home... except it was cloudier... and we weren't in Florida. Ellis pulled up to a bridge and stopped, "Why are we stopping?" Nick asked,
"Because there's no freaking bridge in front of us." I said, "Look with your eyes, Nick."
"Whatever."
"Looks like there's someone up there." Rochelle said, leaning forward to get a look at the situation,
"Well then, let's go talk to them y'all." Coach said,
"Alright but if we get killed it's on you guys." Nick said.
We all piled out of the car, Rochelle was right, there was a man sitting, well standing on the top of the bridge. He was a biker looking man, covered in tattoos and he was wearing a leather vest, "Uh... Hello there!" I called to him,
"Well, hello there." He greeted me, I'm pretty sure he was trying to get friendly, but I wanted no part of that,
"Uh, is there any way you could lower the bridge for us? My friends and I are trying to get to New Orleans."
"Yeah, sorry little lady, no can do."
"Little lady?" I scoffed to myself.
Nick shoved this way past me "Okay, listen to me, jackass, lower the goddamn bridge so we can drive our goddamn car across!"
"Nick!" I slapped him,
"Go to hell, suit!" The guy yelled back to him,
"What the hell is your problem?" I spun Nick around,
"I was trying to get us across the goddamn river." He shoved my hand off of him,
"By being a dick?!"
"What's going on Francis?" I heard a female voice ask.
A woman came around the corner, she had chocolate brown hair pulled into a ponytail and she was wearing a red hoodie, "Don't worry about it Zoey, I'm handling it." Zoey pulled Francis aside and they were having a conversation amongst themselves.
I looked over at Ellis who was staring up at them, like really staring, like... for an uncomfortable amount of time. Zoey came back over to the railing, "Sorry guys, we can't lower the bridge because the generator is out of gas. But if you get over to the other side and fill it up, we can cover you. Best I can offer."
"Alright, sounds like a plan! Thanks!" I turned to the others and adjusted my glasses, "Well... How the hell are we supposed to get to the other side?"
The others exchanged looks while Ellis was still staring up at the bridge, "Hey Coach, know anything about this under-the-river tour?" Rochelle asked, looking at a sign that was advertising said tour,
"Uh...yeah, it's historic." Coach shrugged,
"Well, okay. Good enough." Rochelle said,
"I guess under the river it is." I said, "Let's grab what we can from the car and get going, daylight is burning." I saw a drop of rain collect on the lens of my glasses, "... And now it's starting to rain."
I walked around to grab my stuff from the car. Ellis finally stopped staring at the bridge, he had the largest grin on his face and the doughiest looks in his eyes, "What are you so grinny for?" I smiled back at him,
"Man, that was the prettiest girl I've ever seen."
