Chapter one:
Papyrus blinks awake only to sit up in bed as the morning has come to Undertale. "Another day, another adventure." He tells himself smiling as he does so. He throws the covers off of himself followed by him getting up out of bed. He makes his bed so it's ready again tonight. "I wonder how today is going to turn out. I guess I won't know until I go to wake up Sans." He dresses himself in his own battle body. He isn't sure yet if he should pick another outfit. Since he sometimes does wear them. He leaves his room as the door to his room creaks open from his gentle push. He glances down the hallway. He doesn't notice the door to his brothers room being open. He goes down the stairs listening for any sign his brother is up. He makes it to the kitchen confirming that the other isn't up yet. He decides he'll make breakfast while he waits.
Footsteps enter the kitchen just as Papyrus is finishing up some pancakes.
"Good morning Sans." Papyrus turns and takes note of the clothes Sans is wearing.
Black jacket with fuzz lining the hood, shorts, sneakers, one tooth covered by a golden like fang cap, and red eye liner under his eyes. It seems like Underfell is the world Sans is seeing today, or at least this morning as sometimes it changes. He made the golden like fang cap, after he had claimed the tooth was knocked out in a fight.
Papyrus still loves Sans even with Sanss multiple personality disorder, in which in Sanss mind he sees different worlds while in his personas. He is willing to try to do his best to understand what Sans is seeing. He doesn't even mind sometimes dressing up to act as the brothers that Sans sees. He feels like it's one of the things that they do to bond. Even if he doesn't have to act differently than his usual self. He does it sometimes usually in private, or if he really needs to get something through to Sans. He has learned plenty of how Sans sees him in his different personas, so he can imitate them better for his brother whenever he feels it's needed; or if he just wants to do so. He has seen Sans still be able to embrace the world his current personality is from; in his mind. He is also happy that the others are understanding about the whole thing. He knows how deep into a personality Sans can go. "You could have missed breakfast."
"Yeah Boss." Sans heads over to the table taking a seat. He is doing his best to immitate a rougher voice. Like how he does his best to speak the way any of his personalitys would, if they were their own monsters. "Guess I was a bit tired last night."
"Pipe down with those excuses." Papyrus puts the plates of pancakes on the table. "Breakfast is served!" He hopes that the rest of today will go by well.
"Aw thanks for the pancakes Boss." Sans adds a bunch of syrup before digging in. He glances to Papyrus who sits down at the table with him. He pauses in his eating to speak. "Guess ya could say that it is so good I don't have the stomach for it."
Papyrus stares at Sans with an unimpressed look at the pun.
Sans chuckles at this. "Heh. Sorry boss. Couldn't help it." He gives a smile to Papyrus who lets out a breath.
"Let's just finish breakfast."
"Will do." Sans goes on to continue eating his breakfast as does Papyrus.
Soon enough the two are heading off to get to work. They are greeted by others though they keep a respectful distance.
Sans gets a bit tense in personas like his Underfell one. Since in his eyes the world is a harsh unfriendly place, that every monster is a threat to them.
Papyrus politely greets back and is glad to see Sans at least nod in to the others in response. He keeps his brother close knowing that it makes him feel a bit safer when like this. He gets them to his sentry station where they stop. "Okay Sans." He speaks getting the others attention. "No sleeping at your post. We have to watch out for any humans that might come by."
"Ya got it boss." Sans tries to assure his brother with a small wave then he heads off.
Papyrus goes into his sentry station sitting on the stool for a few moments. He hopes that no one goes to visit Sans, and do something that'll tip him over to attack. He knows that there are monsters who completely avoid Sans, well during the times his persona is one like Underfell, and Sans doesn't kill usually pinning monsters to surrender; or just beating them in battle. He just hopes that this will help keep trouble at a minimum today. He gets up after a few moments then heads out to go check on his puzzles. He'll check on Sans a bit later.
Sans huffs softly as he sits there at his sentry station. He glances around listening for any sounds of anyone nearby. He finds that the land is rather peaceful. He lays his head down on the sentry post table. His eyes still open and he is still listening. He won't let anyone sneak up on him. He refuses to die today... At least in his mind. His mind does end up wandering to the puzzles he's supposed to maintain. He thinks about ways to change them up perhaps.
Awhile later Papyrus comes back to check on his brother. He sees the other has his head on the table like surface. He approaches causing Sans to raise his head.
"Boss! I wasn't sleeping! I swear!" Sans attempts to explain a bit nervous about getting in trouble.
Papyrus decides to play along a little though not wanting to go too far. He hates hurting his brother, even if Sans thinks it'll happen due to the current persona. "Do you think I don't know when you're awake or sleeping? I am a lot better at observing details than you seem to think. Have you done your puzzles?"
"I was working on them in my head boss." Sans tells Papyrus who can tell that it is the truth.
"Well you'd better set yourself to work. You need to do some hands on work with your puzzles." Papyrus points out slightly waving his pointer finger in the air at his brother. He mainly likes that he can be a little more strict with his brother with this persona especially. He doesn't try to overuse it however it just helps to be able to say his thoughts, without things seeming too strange to his brother. He supposes there are advantages and disadvantages with his brothers disorder. He really enjoys some parts that help form how they work so well, while other parts they don't work well together on. He even has some of Sanss personas that he doesn't like. He just goes with it most of the time, since the view of each persona is so strong. He pushes his thoughts away for now as Sans shifts to get to his feet.
"Okay boss. I'll do some work not just in my head."
"Thank you Sans. I will check out your work on your puzzles in my next check." Papyrus turns and heads off once more.
Sans watches him go then heads towards the ruins. He arrives to the door glancing up at it. He stares at it for a few moments before lowering his head. He approaches then knocks on the door. He waits until a muffled female voice is heard.
"Who's there?"
"Boo."
"Boo who?"
"Don't cry. I don't actually have the guts to hurt ya."
This is followed by muffled laughter from the other side of the door.
Sans sits by the door, facing the direction of the forest, letting her calm down before really talking to her. "So how have things been going?"
"They're okay." The woman responds simply which works for the question. "How are things with you? Have they been alright?" She has a good idea of what persona Sans is in due to how he spoke. She has gotten good at picking up on the audio clues.
"Alright I guess." Sans shrugs leaning back against the door. His eyes scan the wilderness around him. "I swear the others don't think I know they're watching, when I walk past. I can tell though. So far nothing though."
"Well I guess they know not to mess with someone as strong as you." The woman responds making Sans chuckle a bit.
"Heh. Yer so flattering." Sans tells her and she giggles knowing that it's a compliment, though slightly meant to amuse her. He is glad to hear her small laugh even if it's through the door.
"Sans... Can I ask you something?"
"Course." Sans agrees with curiosity coming into his voice.
"Do you make promises?"
Sans pauses at that a little surprised at hearing this. He is usually known for not making promises. Though he doubts he told her that as she is asking. "Well. I don't usually. Because they can be hard to keep. I could possibly make an exception for you." He can hear her let out a heavy breath before she responds.
"If you remember at that time, I don't know when it'll happen, I am hoping that you could promise me something. That if a human falls into the underground, that you would help them. Maybe even protect them if needed. I don't know when it'll happen. I just want to make sure with you." The woman knows that Sans is unaware of the different personas; so she can't say the real reason she thinks Sans may forget.
Sans hesitates as this sounds like a promise he might not be able to keep. He doesn't know what exactly will happen if a human comes through. He knows that it'll be dangerous and he might not be able to protect them.
"Please. I don't want to pressure you. But it's to ease an old woman's heart a little."
Sans lets out a breath closing his eyes. "Okay. I promise to do my best to help whoever it is."
"Thank you. I mean it Sans."
"Yeah no problem." Sans brushes it off however a part of himself slightly nags at him about it. He isn't really sure what he's done by making that promise. He supposes that he might have to wait and see.
"How much time do you have before your brother starts looking for you?" The woman brings up knowing how Sans sees his brother in this persona.
"Probably just a little bit. He does want to see me working on the puzzles. Not just thinking about them."
"I see. Well if you need to why not go do that? I wouldn't want you to get in trouble. I have some work I need to do too. We can talk again later. When things cool down a bit."
"Heh. Well alright then. I'll catch ya later." With that Sans teleports away.
An hour later...
Papyrus arrives to one of Sans's puzzles to see him taking away a piece of paper. "How are your puzzles coming?"
"Fine. I just gotta switch a few things around." Sans slightly shrugs lazily just before crumpling up the paper.
Papyrus glances around at the puzzle. He's always seen this one bare save for a piece of paper. He does know that despite the multiple personalities Sans is very smart, creative, and great with science. So he usually just brushes it off as that there is more to it than meets the eye. "Well it is good to see you actually working. Instead of being lazy."
"Yeah. Sure. Whatever boss." Sans grabs a piece of paper from his inventory and places it down. He heads straight over to Papyrus once done. "That should do it for this one."
"Keep up the fine work brother. I wanna see more work from you." Papyrus turns and heads off only to find Sans following him. He doesn't really mind as he can keep a better eye on him.
Sans can function in the world in his own way. Despite his mental condition.
In saying that it doesn't mean that it is without its problems.
So Papyrus likes moments like these. When he can make sure that things are alright with the other. He sees that his brother is starting to relax, and have a little more bounce in his step. He has a feeling that this morning Sans will end up changing personas. He knows that the hint of bounce that has started showing isn't Underfell Sans. He wonders which persona out of the more energetic ones Sans is going to be next. He'll give it time so it can fully come through.
