Heads up: This chapter gets a bit heavy and dark. Just a heads-up if you're not feeling up for it.
Backstage, Steve, Gypsy, Manny, Stabler, Mike, and Angela were all walking down a hallway casually conversing with each other.
"Bugs on Jerry Springer, who'd have thought?" Steve said.
"Yeah, I get the feeling people would feel the same thing," Mike quipped.
Everyone laughed lightly and agreed with Steve and Mike's comment about people's reaction to seeing bugs on Jerry Springer. It was pretty far-fetched and a bit absurd, but it was also pretty fascinating and highly entertaining.
Steve then turned to Manny, Gypsy, and Stabler. "So what'd you think about your time on the show as guest security?"
"Well, it was a pretty tough job and me and my husband are not really accustomed to the body parts that were being shown on the stage during comments since we're bugs, but overall, we had a good time on the show," the female moth replied.
"Indeed we did," her husband added as Stabler nodded in agreement with a smile as everyone chuckled at Gypsy's thought of the job as guest security on the show.
"So Stabler, how long have you been in the SVU?" asked the head of security.
"6 years," Stabler replied.
"6 years, nice!"
"What is this SVU you speak of?" Manny questioned to the detective.
"Long story short, it's a police organization that investigates sex-related crimes." Stabler replied.
"I've heard about it," Mike spoke up.
"It's mainly in New York City," added Angela.
"New York City?" Gypsy asked, intrigued. "Never heard of it. Or even been there. You gotta take us and our troupe there sometime."
"Yeah, they have some awesome landmarks and a skating rink there. You're gonna love it." Mike said with a smile.
Steve then turned to Manny and Gypsy. "With that being said, what are you two known as in your circus?"
"I'm known as Manto the Magnificent." the mantis replied
"And I'm known as his lovely assistant." his wife added
"Really? What acts do you do?" the head of security asked, intrigued.
"One of our acts involves a Chinese food box," Gypsy replied.
"Or as we call it in our circus, the Chinese Cabinet of Metamorphosis," Manny added.
"Really? I should bring my wife and kids to your circus sometime."
"Yes, well, it always doesn't go so well…" the mantis softly sighed sadly.
Steve's smile faded. "How so?"
"Well, the flies in the audience always call me a fraud or throw berries at me."
"Or I end up getting locked in the box... Manny…" Gypsy put her hands on her hips as she looked at her husband, who looked away nervously while blushing.
"C'mon, Gypsy, give your husband a break," Mike jokingly said.
"Yeah, you guys had to break up our fights on the show," Angela added.
Everyone laughed as Gypsy giggled. "Okay, okay."
Steve then turned to the human couple. "So tell me more about this harvester your friend invented.
Mike then started explaining, "Well, it has grass blade straps that are meant to be worn over the shoulders like a backpack. It also has two stick arms: one has a claw that's supposed to grab the stalk tightly, while the other has a spiky bur that acts as a spinning saw, where its function is to cut down the stalk, and it has to be powered by a flywheel, which is a flat stone. However, in order to get the flywheel spinning, one has to wrap their knees in grass blade straps that are connected to the flywheel and move them to get it working. After cutting down the stalk, it has to be placed on top of a large dry leaf and hauled across to get all the grains to fall into an attached leaf basket below. Once that's done, the stalk has to be catapulted using a stick lever located at one's side."
Steve and Stabler looked at them both with an impressed and intrigued look on his face as he heard the details of Flik's invention. "That sounds like quite an incredible invention," Steve complimented.
"Yeah, it's extremely efficient and convenient," added Stabler.
"Yeah, but Flik accidentally hit the princess with the stalk he catapulted once." Angela replied.
"Twice, actually," added Mike. "But keyword, accident.
"Well, accidents do happen," said Steve. "The important thing is that I can see that your friend was trying to do a good thing by inventing this harvester."
"Yeah, and other inventions too."
"What else did he invent?" Stabler asked.
"Uhhh, the telescope…" the female human replied "in his own way."
"It's the colony, so…" her boyfriend added.
Everyone laughed at the comment about the telescope, amused by the thought of Flik designing it in his own unique and unconventional way.
"Really? What did he use?" asked the head of security.
"Grass blade and a bead of dew," Angela replied.
"I know what you're thinking, it sounds like basic stuff for an invention," Mike added.
Steve chuckled at the thought of the telescope being composed of such basic materials. It was certainly an unconventional combination for an invention, but it was also pretty ingeniously simple and creative. He then turned to Gypsy and Manny. "Changing the subject, Gypsy, honestly, I'm kinda surprised you and your husband were able to handle being security on this show at your age. No offense."
"None taken, dear." the moth giggled. "But, yeah, most people our age wouldn't be able to handle it, but us, we've handled a lot more things like this at our age."
"Really, like what?"
"Well, we have fought the grasshoppers before when they took over the colony." Manny replied.
As they continued down the hallway, Stabler interjected, "Speaking of fighting, Mike, you looked like you were about ready to throw down with Thorny and that other guy during the show. Everything cool now?"
Mike shrugged and sighed, a mix of frustration and resignation on his face. "I don't know, man. It's just... Flik, he's like family to me, you know? And they treated him like garbage."
"And to be honest," Steve spoke up. "him being rejected, being sent off to find warriors just so the colony would be rid of and him being banished when he lied, I was actually feeling bad for him and you guys."
"Same," Stabler sympathetically added. "And him abandoning the colony when the princess told him the truth about why he was sent off to find warriors... I'd be just as pissed as him."
Angela nodded in agreement as the credits scrolled on the screen. "Yeah, it's messed up. But at least we got to say our piece on the show, right?"
"True," Mike conceded with a sigh. "I just wish we could've done more."
Steve patted Mike on the back reassuringly. "Hey, you did what you could. And you guys got some good jabs in during those audience comments. That's gotta count for something."
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Mike said, a faint smile crossing his lips. "Thanks, Steve."
As they reached the end of the hallway, Gypsy glanced at the human couple with a warm smile. "Hey… if you ever need someone to talk to or just a shoulder to lean on, Manny and I are here for you."
Manny nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. We've been through our fair share of challenges, so we understand. Don't hesitate to reach out."
Mike and Angela exchanged grateful glances. "Thanks, guys. That means a lot to us," Mike said with a soft smile.
"Definitely," Angela added. "We appreciate your support." She then shared a brief hug with the moth which she gladly accepted.
Steve and Stabler smiled at the kind and tender moment. "Now those are some wise bugs right there." praised Steve as he turned to the human couple. "Hey… I wish you two the best of luck… I hope your inventive genius friend is alright… and I hope you find him."
Angela stepped forward and embraced Steve, offering him a warm hug. "Thanks for everything, Steve."
Steve returned the hug warmly, patting her on the back before releasing her. "Anytime. Take care of yourselves, okay?"
Meanwhile, Mike extended his hand to Stabler, shaking it firmly as the credits finished scrolling on the screen to the copyright note. "Thanks for looking out for us, Stabler. We appreciate it. Good luck to your team at the SVU and NYPD."
Stabler nodded in acknowledgment, returning the handshake with a firm grip. "Anytime, Mike, and good luck to you too. You guys stay safe out there."
Finally, Steve and Mike exchanged a brief but meaningful pat on the shoulder, wordlessly conveying their mutual respect and camaraderie.
With their farewells exchanged, the group parted ways, each feeling a sense of gratitude for the unexpected connections they had forged and the support they had received. As they went their separate paths, they carried with them the memories of their shared experiences and the bonds that had been formed backstage at the Jerry Springer show.
After the heartfelt farewells were exchanged and the characters began to disperse, a sense of closure settled over the scene. It was then that the NBC Universal Television Distribution logo appeared on the screen, marking the conclusion of the show.
As the logo graced the screen, its presence signaled the transition from the intimate moments shared between the characters to the broader narrative unfolding within the realm of television. The familiar jingle that accompanied it served as a comforting reminder of the vast network of storytelling that awaited beyond this particular moment.
Just 2 days after Mike and Angela's appearance on Jerry's show, tensions lingered in the colony as the aftermath of the human couple's appearance continued to unfold. The queen, Atta, and the Colony Council found themselves grappling with the repercussions of the humans' revelations.
The human couple's demeanor toward the colony had shifted drastically. Ignoring and distancing themselves out of spite and anger, they had erected an emotional barrier that left the ants feeling deeply regretful and remorseful.
Each encounter with the humans served as a painful reminder of the rift that had formed between them and the colony. The queen and Atta looked on with heavy hearts as their attempts to bridge the divide were met with cold indifference.
Conversations with Mr. Soil, Dr. Flora, Thorny, and Cornelius echoed with a somber tone, as they reflected on the missed opportunities to establish trust and understanding with the humans. Their regret was palpable, knowing that their actions had inadvertently driven the couple further away.
Dot, still grappling with the complexities of the situation, found solace in the company of the human couple. Despite their own turmoil, Mike and Angela offered her a comforting presence, their silent support a source of strength in her time of need. Though they told Dot where they were in a discreet and vague, but honest way, considering she was still a kid.
But even as they sought refuge in each other's company, the ants couldn't shake the nagging sense of regret that lingered in the air. If only they had acted differently, if only they had been more open-minded and accepting, perhaps they could have avoided this rift altogether.
But now, with Flik gone and the damage done, they were left to contend with the consequences of their actions. And as they looked out over the quiet expanse of the colony, they couldn't help but wonder what the future held in store.
As the days passed, the colony remained haunted by the memory of the human couple's departure, their presence a bittersweet reminder of what could have been. Despite their best efforts to mend the fractured relationship, the ants couldn't shake the feeling of sorrow and remorse that hung over them like a shadow.
Mike and Angela often sought solace in the presence of Gypsy and Manny, finding comfort in their silent support. Whether it was a gentle touch, a reassuring glance, or a comforting hug, the moth couple offered a safe space for the humans to express their emotions without judgment. In moments of despair and sorrow, their silent companionship spoke volumes, providing a sense of understanding and empathy that transcended words. And as the days passed, their bond grew stronger, a testament to the power of friendship and compassion in times of need. Whenever Mike and Angela's tears were shed, Gypsy and Manny, and the rest of the circus troupe all provided them comfort and a shoulder to lean on.
A week later, Gypsy and Manny gently approached Mike and Angela, their expressions filled with concern and compassion. With a subtle gesture, they conveyed their offer of sanctuary and support, inviting the humans to join them and their circus troupe on their journey. Mike and Angela exchanged glances, their eyes reflecting a mixture of surprise and gratitude at the unexpected gesture of kindness. After a moment of silent contemplation, they nodded in agreement, accepting the offer with heartfelt appreciation. In that simple exchange, bonds of friendship and trust deepened, creating a sense of belonging and solidarity in the face of uncertainty.
Back at the colony, as Mike and Angela began to pack their belongings, Dot watched with a mix of sadness and curiosity. Sensing her emotions, the human couple knelt down beside her, offering gentle reassurance and comfort. With soft smiles and tender words, they explained their decision to leave the colony, assuring Dot that they would always cherish the memories they shared together.
Meanwhile, the queen observed the exchange from a distance, her heart heavy with sorrow yet touched by the humans' kindness towards her daughter. Approaching them with a solemn expression, she nodded in understanding, granting Dot permission to visit Mike and Angela whenever she desired.
As the time to depart drew near, Mike and Angela bid farewell to Dot, promising to return soon and create new adventures together. With hugs and teary-eyed smiles, they exchanged heartfelt goodbyes, knowing that their bond would endure despite the distance.
With a final glance back at the colony, Mike and Angela took one last step forward, embarking on a new chapter of their journey with Gypsy, Manny, and their circus troupe by their side. And as they disappeared into the horizon, Dot waved goodbye, her heart filled with hope and anticipation for the reunions yet to come.
Mike sat at a makeshift desk, pen in hand, carefully crafting his letter to Dot. Beside him, Angela leaned over a piece of parchment, her expression focused as she poured her thoughts onto paper.
Dot sat cross-legged on the floor, a stack of blank papers in front of her as she pondered what to write. With a determined look in her eyes, she dipped her quill into the inkwell and began to write, her words flowing freely as she expressed her thoughts and feelings.
Hours passed as they wrote, each letter a testament to the bond they shared despite the distance between them. They poured their hearts onto the pages, sharing memories, dreams, and hopes for the future.
Finally, as the sun began to set, they exchanged their letters, each one filled with love, laughter, and the promise of reunion. With a smile, they sealed their envelopes, knowing that no matter how far apart they may be, their connection would always remain strong.
Months passed since Flik's departure, and Mike's spirits continued to plummet. His usual jovial demeanor faded, replaced by a cloud of sadness that seemed to follow him wherever he went. Alone in his tent one evening, Mike found himself consumed by despair. Thoughts of Flik's absence weighed heavily on his mind, and he felt utterly helpless in the face of his friend's departure.
With trembling hands, the male human reached for something hidden beneath his bed, his thoughts swirling with dark intentions. But just as he began to act on his impulses, a sudden commotion outside his tent caught his attention.
Before he could react, Gypsy burst through the flap, her eyes wide with concern as she tackled Mike to the ground, preventing him from carrying out his plan.
Startled and disoriented, the male human found himself pinned beneath the moth's grasp, his breaths coming in ragged gasps as he struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
Gypsy held him tightly, her embrace offering a sense of comfort and stability in the midst of his turmoil. As Mike's tears began to fall as he broke down, crying uncontrollably, Gypsy whispered words of encouragement, her voice a soothing balm to his wounded soul.
Outside the tent, Angela's intuition led her to investigate the disturbance. Peering through the flaps, she caught sight of Gypsy and her Mike locked in a tender embrace, her heart aching at the sight of her boyfriend in such distress.
Rushing to their side, Angela joined them, offering her support and solidarity in their time of need. Together, they remained by Mike's side, their presence a beacon of hope in the darkness that threatened to consume him.
The next day, Angela gently suggested to Mike that it might be helpful to talk to her sister, who was a therapist. Mike hesitated at first, but Angela assured him that her sister was really good at listening and helping people through tough times. Reluctantly, Mike agreed to give it a try.
When they arrived at her sister's place, Angela's sister welcomed them warmly and invited them in. They sat down in her cozy living room, surrounded by comforting decorations and soft lighting.
Angela's sister listened attentively as Mike opened up about his feelings of sadness and hopelessness since Flik's departure. She offered him a tissue when tears welled up in his eyes and nodded empathetically as he spoke.
After hearing Mike's story, Angela's sister shared some insights and strategies to help him cope with his depression. She encouraged him to practice self-care, reach out to supportive friends and family members, and consider seeking professional help if needed.
As they left her sister's place, Angela squeezed Mike's hand reassuringly. Mike felt grateful for Angela's support and hopeful that he could start feeling better with the help of therapy and continued support from his loved ones.
(My notes on the update after a few months.)
The queen, Princess Atta, and the Colony Council were exposed for all of their wrongdoing of Flik, and the colony was left reeling from the consequences. And almost tragically, a few months after Mike and Angela's appearance on Jerry Springer, Mike found himself on the verge of doing the most unthinkable to try and end his misery.
But just as he was about to take that fateful step, Gypsy intervened, her keen instincts sensing the danger he was in. With swift and decisive action, she prevented him from carrying out his desperate plan.
Angela has been diligently accompanying her boyfriend to therapy sessions, providing him with unwavering support. And now, I'm happy to report that Mike has overcome his depression. The queen, Atta, and the Colony Council will be commemorating Flik's contributions to the colony, acknowledging the mistakes made, and working towards a more inclusive and compassionate community to support Mike and Angela.
Even though the colony has taken steps to rectify their mistakes and support Mike and Angela, nothing can make up for the pain and suffering Flik has endured, and the profound loss experienced by Mike and Angela.
I hope the entire colony spends the rest of their lives regretting their poor decisions and the mistakes they made, and the fact that they still have their colony intact while Mike and Angela's close friend was torn away from them
And I know my readers feel the same way. Thanks for reading.
In loving memory of Jerry Springer (1944-2023)
