The doctors were flown back to Seattle the same night, all sedated, as they had requested. Arizona eventually gave in too, because her wife had told her she would probably lose her leg if she stayed at that hospital, and she wanted to avoid that at all costs.
Not long after they had arrived and each been brought to a room, they started waking up. Cristina and Meredith first, the others a little bit later. Since their bodies were fighting to heal simultaneously, it took a little longer.
Mark didn't want to stay for the night, at least not in his own hospital bed, but Bailey and Webber convinced him to, as well as Meredith and Cristina, who both insisted that they were fine.
None of the six were alone; their friends and family took care of them.
Owen stayed with Cristina. Even with everything they were going through, he still loved her, and tonight, it was as simple as that. He cleaned her up and got her as comfortable as she would get in a hospital room.
Meredith was accompanied by Alex, even though she didn't understand why she had to stay in her own room when she could be with Derek instead. She only had a light concussion and a cut in her leg that had already been stitched up back at the other hospital.
Arizona, of course, had Callie. She was so worried about her leg that she made her wife promise to save it at all costs and not cut it off, whatever happened. But the infection was only getting worse, and the Latina didn't know how long she would be able to keep that promise.
Amelia Shepard took a flight from LA to Seattle as soon as she heard about the plane crash. She sat with her brother and tried to talk some hope into him, even though his hand looked very bad and it was not like he would be operating again any time soon, if at all.
Mark was being watched by Jackson, who was told not to let him out of his sight for one second, so he couldn't sneak out to Lexie's room. He was honestly just relieved that he was still alive, even though he was being so reckless with himself.
And Lexie was left with April, who had been talking nonstop since the minute she walked into the room. She begged that her pain would make her pass out, just so she wouldn't have to listen to her babble about some issues she was having with Jesus any longer.
"April!" she shouted.
"What?" The redhead turned to face her, surprised by her tone.
"Can you just stop talking, please? For one second?"
"Sorry. I just-" She sighted and started staring at the lines on the floor.
Lexie wasn't going to get out of it anyway, so she might as well try to be friendly. "Alright. What is it?"
April grabbed a chair and sat down beside her.
"And slow this time. My head's not really clear yet." the brunette added before she could start again.
"Jesus is mad at me. He's really mad at me. That's why I failed my boards! And now no one's going to hire me as a surgeon because I'm not board certified." she whined.
"And why exactly would Jesus hate you?"
She was hesitant. If she told Lexie now, if she said it out loud, it would be true.
"I slept with Jackson." she mumbled.
"You slept with Jackson?" Lexie repeated in shock.
"Two times! Oh my god!" April burried her head in her hands, ashamed.
But the brunette started laughing, a little proudly even.
April looked up at her in confusion. "W-Why are you laughing? Are you high on meds or something?"
"No! April, this is great! Wait, is it great? Do you like him? Does he like you?" she started rambling. She was actually happy for them. Sure, she was with Jackson at one point, and she really liked him, but she was always in love with Mark—now more than ever.
"No! I don't know! I mean- ugh!" She was overwhelmed again. "You know what the worst part is? I liked it, I did, and that's why my life is a mess now!"
Lexie scoffed in disbelief. "Your life is a mess? Have you taken a look at me? Twenty-four hours ago, I was lying under the wing of a freaking plane! And now I'm practically useless because more than half of my body was crushed by tons of metal! So I get to call my life a mess. Your problems are a midlife crisis. It'll pass."
The redhead was taken aback. She was right; compared to her problems, her issues seemed like nothing. Except for the fact that she had no idea what to do next.
"You're right. I-I feel a little pathetic now. But that doesn't change the fact that I have no clue what will happen tomorrow, or the day after that, or the week after that." she realized. Her future was completely uncertain now. Would she be able to continue to work at Seattle Grace Mercy West? Or would she have to go back to the farm? God, she didn't want to go back to the farm.
"Suck it up, April. Me neither. I don't know if I'm gonna walk again, like ever. So suck it up. And if I learned one thing from this whole disaster, it's that you need to cherish every moment in life because every one of them could be your last. I almost died out there, and I'm not gonna waste anymore time not saying the things I actually want to say just because I'm scared of what they mean. You should consider doing the same." she advised her.
"What? Me and- and Jackson? No, that's- that's not gonna- no..." she tried to deny it. But it was so obvious that she might as well have written 'I heart Jackson Avery' on her forehead.
Meanwhile, in Mark's room, there was a similar conversation going on.
Mark had been watching Jackson walk around the room nervously for ten minutes before he decided to step in.
"Avery, what's going on?"
"Who? Nothing!" he shrugged it off, not very convincing.
"You look guilty. What have you done? Talk. Now." he observed.
Jackson smoothly took a stool and placed himself on it next to his bed.
"I slept with April."
Mark shot him a proud grin and patted him on the shoulder.
"No. No, it's not good! I mean, it was. It was really, really good. But it ruined our friendship, and now she has relationship issues with Jesus!"
The blonde sighted. "Do you like her?"
It took a moment, but then he answered honestly "I- Yea, I think I do."
"Then where's the problem? Just go tell her that."
"She won't talk to me. She's avoiding me. She says she can't keep herself from sleeping with me if we get too close."
His mentor started laughing again. "That's great. You got virgin Kepner addicted to sex with you."
"You know, sometimes when you talk, it makes me feel like a male prostitute." Jackson told him, completely baffled by what he had just said.
"Let me tell you something, something important that took me way too long to get. If you love someone, you tell them. Even if you're scared that it's not the right thing, even if you're scared that it'll cause problems, even if you're scared that it'll burn your life to the ground, you say it, and you say it loud. And then you go from there."
Jackson took his words in deeply. He was right about everything. He did need to tell April how he felt, or else he would lose her forever.
Lexie and April, in the room next door, started bonding over how crappy their lives were looking right now, laughing away the pain with dark humour.
"God, I feel like we're turning into Meredith and Cristina." the redhead noticed, and they both stopped laughing for a moment. After a few seconds, they shared a look and then burst out in laughter again.
Till they suddenly heard a beeping noise coming from the other side of the wall. Lexie's mood immediately shifted. She knew it was Mark's room.
"April, go look right now." she instructed her, worried.
April didn't move. She wasn't sure if that was the right thing to do.
"Now!" Lexie shouted again, and this time she listened.
Kepner quickly went looking and was back in a few seconds.
"What's going on?" Lexie asked, scared.
April hesitated. "He's coding."
"What? Get me over there right now!" the brunette demanded.
"Lexie, I can't do that. You can't even stand; you're no help there. Jackson is taking care of it. He got this. How can you help him in your condition?" she tried calming her down. She was sure that if she didn't, Lexie would try to jump out of her bed any second somehow.
"I-I don't know! I just-I need to be with him!" she was panicking.
"No, you need to calm down, or you're gonna go into cardiac arrest yourself!" she noticed as she looked at her heartbeat monitor.
"April, please!" Lexie begged desperately.
"I can't! I'm sorry." She was; she knew how much Lexie loved Mark, and she could see the helplessness in her face, knowing she couldn't do anything to help him.
"I'm going if you promise me that you're gonna stay right where you are." she offered.
"It's not like I am able to move."
"I don't know. For a second, I feared that you might jump on me."
Lexie rolled her eyes. "Fine. Yea. I promise. Just go, please."
April went outside, and it felt like hours had passed till she came back, even though it was only five minutes.
"He's fine. He's stable." the redhead immediately informed her as she walked through the door.
"He went into cardiac arrest because he hadn't been resting like he was supposed to, and his heart couldn't take it." she added.
"Can I see him now?" Lexie pleaded.
Her friend sighted. Then she went outside without saying anything back.
A minute later, she came back. "Alright. I can't put you in a wheel chair because, according to Torres, your legs need to lay flat, but I talked to Jackson, and now I'm going to take your bed to his room. I swear to god, Lexie, if you get me fired for this, I'm gonna-"
"Thank you." she cut in.
April removed her from the machines she was connected to and slowly rolled her out of the room and right back in the next door.
Jackson was watching the hallway, making sure nobody noticed. Then they gave the two some privacy.
"Don't do that again." Lexie told Mark.
"I'll try." he chuckled, still a bit weak.
"Seriously, you need to take it easy. You can't die on me now." she said in a more serious tone.
"I won't." He looked over at her and reached for her hand. She took it and shot him a smile.
But Lexie was ripped out of their moment when she noticed their two friends watching them from outside the big glass door.
When Jackson realised that they saw them, he closed the curtain.
"It's rare what they have. I really hope to find something like this one day, you know." he said, looking over at April.
She was a little dreamy. "Yea." She always admired Mark and Lexie's unconditional love for each other. Whether they were together or not, they were always there for one another, when Lexie had PTSD from the shooting or when Callie and Arizona got in the car crash and Mark almost lost his best friend and baby.
"They're soulmates." April smiled.
Meanwhile, Mark and Lexie were laughing about the two watching them when the brunette remembered something she had recently found out.
She gasped, excited. "Did you know April and Jackson had sex with each other?"
Mark grinned. "Avery told me."
"Does he like her?" she wanted to know. She was on a mission to get them together now.
"He said he did, but that she was having God problems or something and was avoiding him."
"That's great! She likes him too. We gotta get them together." she suggested, a devilish smile on her lips.
"We definitely should." he replied, the same expression on his face.
"I wish I could kiss you right now." Lexie whined.
Mark got up a bit and moved his head in her direction.
"What are you doing? You shouldn't..." she protested, but he cut her off by pressing his lips onto hers. It was a slow, gentle kiss, full of love.
"If this gives me another heart attack, it was worth it." Mark smiled as he laid back against the back of his bed.
"This is not funny."
"Just a little." he joked, making her chuckle as well.
