Another failure. Although Homura didn't want this to happen, they both knew it was inevitable. Sayaka fell into despair and became a witch. Kyoko, in an attempt to save Homura and Madoka, sacrificed herself to defeat Sayaka. Homura felt devastated when she saw Madoka's reaction.
"Why? Why do I feel this way, if I have seen this many times? Because?"
She thought to herself as she watched a devastated Madoka in her room. Hitori appeared behind her.
-Homura.
- Oh, hello Hitori.
- We failed again, didn't we?
- Yes. I know it's inevitable, but... how could we fail? Being 2 people, do we fail equally?
- You said it yourself. It is unavoidable. One way or another, everything that happened will happen. And it will continue to happen.
- Do you think we can beat Walpurgis? We have tried to save Mami, Sayaka and Kyoko. Everything is happening as usual.
- I understand what you mean, Homura. But I have a feeling you'll make it this time. We will achieve it together.
Homura smiled.
- Maybe we have a chance, Hitori. The second time I tried, Madoka and I were victorious, but… she ended up being a witch.
Hitori nodded.
- I understand what you mean. Don't worry, I have plenty of grief seeds in case that happens.
- So we are one step ahead, right?
Homura said.
- Homura, I have a plan. We could set traps in the city. That way, we can weaken Walpurgis.
- I had the same idea. But now that you're here, it might work.
- It will work, Homura. Has to.
They both nodded.
The traps were ready. Walpurgis would arrive the next day. Despite having been through this many times, Homura was still nervous. What would happen to her if she failed again? She couldn't abandon Hitori. She was very helpful to her, even though they inevitably failed. Would she be able to defeat Walpurgis in another timeline without Hitori's help? All those doubts clouded her mind. But the most special one arose in her mind: what did that nightmare she had a few days ago mean? Was it just a nightmare? Homura didn't want to lose Hitori. Despite loving Madoka with all her heart, Hitori had earned all of her appreciation.
- Why do you trust Hitori so much, Akemi Homura?
That voice. Homura got up from her bed, and saw Kyubey at her window again. The one who constantly tormented her with the truth. The one responsible for all her suffering.
- Kyubey.
-Homura.
Homura decided to answer the question.
- I trust Hitori. We have many things in common. More than I thought we would ever have. However…she understands me. I feel comfortable with her.
- Don't you think it's strange that Hitori refuses to tell you more about her past? How does she know so much about what's about to happen? Why is Hitori so determined to protect you, Akemi Homura?
- I don't care what she has experienced. I don't want to make her uncomfortable by forcing her to tell me something painful. And she is willing to help me for her own goals.
Kyubey continued sitting at the window.
- Akemi Homura, you are time travelers. It was difficult for us to deduce it, but everything indicates that they are.
- So what? You gave me this power.
- Do you know what happens when you travel through time with a single objective, Akemi Homura? It's strange. Every time you travel through time with a single goal, your karma accumulates in it. The more time travel you do, the more karma will accumulate in the person. Your own suffering. However, it's strange that Madoka isn't your target apparently. We thought she would bear the full weight of your despair. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Everything indicates that you have been receiving all that karma, Akemi Homura. And the more you travel through time, the more karma you will accumulate.
Homura was upset. Kyubey was right. Time travel had its consequences. But if Madoka, the main goal of all her journeys, didn't receive that karma, then who?
-Who is receiving that karma then, Kyubey?
- I do not know. But the person who receives that karma, if she is not a magical girl at this time, then that person has the potential to be able to rewrite the universal laws at will. Or perhaps, that karma brought something to this time. Something that shouldn't exist, but still does. A mere living paradox, whose existence is conditioned by the existence of others. – Finally, Kyubey asks one last question. – Akemi Homura, why has Hitori insisted so much that her only objective is to help you kill Walpurgis in order to protect Madoka's life? Doesn't she have other goals?
-She does it for her family.
-And what if she lies about her past? You can never be sure someone is telling the truth unless you get inside their mind.
Tired of the chatter, Homura took a well-aimed shot at Kyubey. Her body fell out of the window, landing in the patio. However, something was stuck in Homura's mind. Had Hitori been being honest with her about her past? Despite having her trust, was it really enough?
-Hitori.
- Hello, Homura.
Both girls were at the top of a building, waiting for Walpurgis's arrival.
- I made sure Madoka was safe. But we'll have to defeat Walpurgis quickly. Madoka is very stubborn, and I'm sure she will try to ask Kyubey to give her the power to help us.
- I understand.
Hitori said with her characteristic coldness.
-Hey, Hitori. Why are you so insistent on helping me defeat Walpurgis? Are you really interested in saving Madoka, or are you doing it for your family?
Hitori sighed.
- That's irrelevant, Homura. I don't want to waste time talking about it. – Hitori was noticeably nervous. – I just want to focus on Walpurgis now.
- Promise me that you will be honest with me once we get it done.
Hitori smiled at Homura, her eyes moist.
- I promise you.
