Brief History:

Born on the island of Shizoku in the East Blue, Katsuki is only a few months older than his Captain Midoriya Izuku who is also from Shizoku and as such grew up together as childhood friends. Early on Katsuki was noted by the adults on the island as being special; he had a strong command of others and a keen intellect a young age albeit with a mean streak that made him a bit of a bully. Additionally, the praise and ease at which things came to Katsuki lead to him becoming notably arrogant from a young age.

This all changed when Katsuki was 5 years old and he accidentally ate the Kaboom-Kaboom Fruit and gained the power to ignite the sweat on his palms which itself was now explosive. How Katsuki found and ate the Devil Fruit is unknown but he did and as is often the case in the Blues and other places where Devil Fruits are not common or well understood, he was ostracized for his strange powers.

The only person who remained his friend, or tried to be his friend at least, was Izuku who was fascinated by the power and what it could do. Katsuki saw this kindness as Izuku looking down on him and lashed out to the point that he bullied Izuku and used his power to instill fear in the other kids and later adults as respect came with that fear. This led Katsuki to declare that when he was able to he'd take to the sea become a pirate and leave this island to make a name for himself on the Grand Line. Despite all this Izuku persevered trying to get through to his friend and help him out.

This dynamic between Katsuki and his future Captain would go on for almost a decade before the arrival of a gaunt, skeletal, stranger on the far side of the island who only went by the name Might. Izuku was the one who found him and helped him out upon which he became one of the few to learn that the man had a Devil Fruit power and that the man had lived much of his life on the Grand Line which fascinated Izuku.

Katsuki knew none of this and still treated Izuku poorly, especially now that Izuku was also determined to be a pirate, and not just any pirate but the number 1 pirate who could help make the world better, as Katsuki saw it as an impossible dream for a Devil Fruitless kid. Even after risking his life to save Katsuki from a criminal that had shown up on Shizoku while on the run from the Navy did Katsuki treat Izuku like this.

However that very act was what changed things and Izuku would be trained by Might to inherit his Devil Fruit power, a training that Katsuki eventually stumbled upon early into the intensive 3 year training program that Izuku was going through. With Might's guidance, Katsuki and Izuku's relationship was slowly healed and trust reestablished as Katsuki learned the truth of Izuku's impending power and aided in the training Izuku needed to inherit it.

All of this culminated in Katsuki finally coming to terms with his own insecurities and apologizing to Izuku for his past actions towards his childhood friend when they were 16. This was the greatest step in their relationship and led to even more training for both of them over the next year before Izuku gained his power and Might left to parts unknown.

After that, and at Might's suggestion, Izuku decided that it was time to take to the sea and asked Katsuki, who he calls Kacchan, to be his first mate of the newly formed Might Pirates. Katsuki accepted and while there is still tension and authority issues ingrained into Katsuki's personality he does follow Izuku's lead and in turn Izuku knows how best to work with Katsuki and often listens to Katsuki's council.

This is their dynamic and together they sailed the East Blue for several months as they established their reputations, recruited close to a dozen new crew members, and had a few minor adventures that ended up with both Izuku and Katsuki earning their first bounties of 25 and 10 million respectively. All of this was before they headed for the Grand Line but ensured that they were one of the up and coming rookie crews before entering it.

However, unlike most crews, they did not stop at Logue Town but instead went straight to the Grand Line in part because of Straw Hat Luffy's presence and he'd upstaging them in the East Blue which ensured that the Might Pirates were considered the second most notorious rookies from the East Blue. As such, rather than run into the Straw Hats, they opted to just enter the Grand Line and beat them to establishing themselves in Paradise. This was Katsuki's idea but Izuku agreed and from there they took a different sea route to Sabaody to the Straw Hats.

Along the way to Sabaody they recruited several more crewmembers, defeated and exposed a Warlord's heinous actions, and properly made a name for themselves as one of the top rookie crews in the first half of the Grand Line. Katsuki notably defeated the number 2 of the Warlord they beat along with other victories over notable criminals that the Navy hadn't been able to defeat and as a result his bounty jumped twice until it reached 268 million berries though annoyingly to him it's 10 million less than the second mate and his rival on the crew Todoroki Shoto.

Due to earning this bounty in the first half of the Grand Line Katsuki became a Super Rookie, one of three on the crew, and as he was present on Sabaody when Straw Hat Luffy punched Saint Charloss he is considered a member of the Worst Generation. The Might Pirates are one of only 2 crews with 3 members in the Worst Generation and with Katsuki's bounty as the lowest of the three they also have the highest third place bounty on any of the 14 infamous crews.
