Chapter 3: Mirabel:

Liselotte's POV:

"Pull it tighter, Mirabel," I said. She then tries. "Pull it tighter! I want a waste like Anna Hill's!"

"But if I pull it any tighter, you're not going to be able to breathe," says Mirabel.

"Oh, that's alright," I said, "I don't need much breath anyway. As my late friend, Matty used to say, if a girl doesn't watch her figure, the man won't."

"Matty... isn't that the man you were going to marry," asks Mirabel.

"Yes," I said, "but he hung himself instead. Oh, Matty was such a card."

"Well, where's your new friend going to take you," asks Mirabel.

"To the Hoffman House for dinner," I said, "and then Tony Pasture's for the big show."

"That sounds like fun," says Mirabel.

"Oh yeah, he's a free spender alright," I said, "a little bit older than I like, but awfully distinguish looking."

"Is he nice," asks Mirabel.

"Oh, he's a real gentleman, except when he has a couple drinks in him. That's to be expected. I'm moving up in the world, Honey. No girl ever hits the jackpot until after she hits 14th Street."

"Is that how it goes," asks Mirabel.

"Look at me," I said," soon, I'll be hitting the bright lights of 13rd."

"When you get up there tonight, don't drink too much," says Mirabel.

"Oh, don't worry, I won't," I said, "he keeps trying to pour the liquor into me, but I manage to keep my head. After all, now that I'm going regular with the swell, I got social obligations. You know how it is when a fella... no, of course you don't. You're not like me, Mirabel, you never could be. You got all the brains and all I got is... what I got. I'm surprised you even talk to me."

"That's such nonsense," says Mirabel, "you're so good to me."

"Why not," I asked, "a girl needs a friend when she's down on her luck." I then looked at the time and realized I was late. "I gotta hurry! Did you find a job yet?"

"Not yet, but they need a hat check girl at the Silver Slipper," says Mirabel.

"I know the fella that runs that place, watch out for him," I said.

"Why," asks Mirabel, "what's wrong with him?"

"Nothing much," I said, "not as long as you know how to duck. Say, how'bout I give you some money. You can buy yourself some dinner."

"I couldn't," says Mirabel.

"I insist." I then kissed her on the cheek. "Good luck and don't forget to duck."

Mirabel's POV:

I then returned home. "Just a minute, Miss Solarblind," says the Landlady, "what are you coming in so quietly for?"

"It was so late, I didn't want to disturb anyone," I said.

"Did you get the job?"

"No," I said.

"Why not?"

"I'm having trouble with the man who runs it," I said, "Mrs. Flannigan, you'll get your money. Liselotte promises to lend me some tonight shen she comes home."

"Well, you better get right up there then," says Mrs. Flannigan, "because she's home now."

"Couldn't it wait until tomorrow," I said.

"No, it could not," says Mrs. Flannigan, "if you want to sleep in this house tonight, you get that money."

"Alright," I said, "I'll try." I then walked up the stairs.

. . .

I then knocked on Liselotte's door. "Liselotte," I said. There was no response. I then knocked again. "Liselotte, it's Mirabel, are you there?" I then got in and found Cathy, lying on her bed. "Liselotte?" I then realized there was a stranger in Liselotte's room. A man with a horribly twisted face. I screamed. I then ran out the window and climbed down the building to get away from the stranger. I ran and the Stranger chased after me. I then found a cabby and chased after it. I lost the cabby. I then hid and the Stranger was looking for me. I then got my shoe ready. The Stranger then left. I then ran to Scott Tennyson's home and started knocking on the door. I then saw the Stranger and I kept knocking and Scott's Mother answered.

"Mother, what is it," asks Scott.

"It's Mirabel!"

"Mirabel," asks Scott, "this is a surprise. I was just thinking about-" He then saw how scared I looked.

"What happened, Dear," asks Scott's Mother.

"What's wrong," asks Scott.

I then told them everything that happened.
