"Here we are!" Emily shouted, pushing the large doors open for me. "And that concludes the tour of heaven! From now on, this will be your new home. We sincerely hope that you find it comfortable."
As I walked in, I could hardly believe my eyes, my jaw dropping at the sight of the magnificent structure before me. I slowly took in my surroundings and continued to explore my new home. As I walked further into the place, I suddenly realized that the Seraphims had located me in a large penthouse that offered a breathtaking view of the entire city.
My eyes started to scan the room, feeling more and more excited with each sight I see. There are tall windows in a high-rise building with beautiful chandeliers on the top. There are at least three extra levels, with each room fully furnished to my liking with some furniture replicated the ones back when I was alive, except more fancy and of higher quality. The place resembles the one I saw in a magazine featuring the hottest new look that was valued in the 1930s. I will admit, it's hard to believe that I've been blessed with such a home, going from living in a small house to a sudden penthouse.
I walked towards the window and noticed that the city of angels looked different in the absence of the sun. The dazzling lights that shone in the shadows created an atmosphere that reminded me of city life on Earth. However, there was one significant difference - everyone in this place was already dead and happy. This place was their new heaven, and nothing could harm these spirits.
But despite the stunning location, I couldn't shake the feeling that it was too good to be true. As I gazed down at the flawlessly clean floor, I absentmindedly rubbed my arm and looked up towards the two Seraphims.
"What's the matter?" Sera asked, her eyes filled with concern. "Is this home not to your liking?"
"N-No!" Raising my hands in defence "I've always wanted to live in a place like this. It's incredible how you discovered the kind of style I like."
"Then why are you sad?" Emily asked, standing beside Sera. "We did our best to accommodate your home, yet you're not smiling."
I let out a small sigh, knowing I couldn't lie to these kind-hearted souls. I sat down on a large four-seater couch facing the view of the city. I looked out towards the starlit night sky, feeling a mix of emotions.
"It's…hard to explain." I replied, looking up at the night sky. "The home is perfect, hell-"
"Sorry April," Sera cut me off, "We don't use that word here."
I blinked a few times and nodded in understanding. "I apologize. Anyway, this place is heaven, just as the books described it. It's paradise in every way. But it will take some time for me to adjust to this new way of life." Feeling their presence, both angels sat down beside me and took my hand, showing their support as best they could. I smiled softly and held their hands in mine, looking forward once again.
"Happiness is indeed a blessing, but it's important to acknowledge that my life wasn't an easy one. Even in the afterlife, there is a lot of healing that I need to do while I'm here. I hope you can understand."
"I do," Emily said, nodding her head. "I'll admit, I'm not used to someone not being happy right away as that is my job here in heaven. But I will do my best to support you the best I can. Isn't that right, Sera?"
Sera nodded her head and returned the warm smile. "Of course, I will be busy with my own work. But I do hope that you will join me at some point when you are ready."
"What kind of work do you oversee here in heaven?" I asked, tilting my head to the side.
Chuckling softly, Sera shook her head and took her hand away from my grip. She playfully placed it upon her lips and said, "For now, that's a secret. Let's have you settle into heaven first before I spare you the details."
I nodded my head, looking at her with understanding and let out a sigh. She was right, I had just arrived and had no right to ask such a big question from a high-ranking angel. I looked down at Emily, who was still holding my hand, and couldn't help but smile softly. I placed my hand on top of hers.
"Emily, I realize we haven't known each other for a long time, but I want you to know that I appreciate your dedication and kindness. I am confident that we will become great friends moving forward."
"That sounds wonderful!" Emily responded eagerly. "When I'm not assisting the other residents, would you like to hang out sometime? I bet I can show you some hidden gems and fun things to do here in heaven."
"Yes, I'm sure we will." I said, now standing up. "It's getting late. I don't mean to kick you ladies out but I should probably get some rest. I'm starving and I think I need to get used too…" feeling my wings flap, I felt myself almost losing balance. "These…things."
The two angels laughed, nodding their heads in understanding. They also stood up and started making their way towards the door, with me following them.
"If you ever need any assistance, please don't hesitate to give us a call," Sera said. "We're just a phone call away, as you humans say."
I giggled at Sera's comment, appreciating her effort to entertain me. "Yes, Sera, that's correct," I said, complimenting her.
"Thank you, April. I'm glad to hear that. I'm doing my best to stay up to date," Sera replied, looking proud. She then turned to Emily, the smaller angel, and said, "Let's go, Emily. We should leave her alone to rest now."
"Yes, ma'am!' Emily responded enthusiastically.
As she looked away from the older angel, she jumped into me and gave me a sudden hug, causing me to catch her from the unexpected action. Blinking a few times, I looked down at the smaller Seraphim, awkwardly patting her head as I wasn't used to someone being so affectionate during the first interaction.
"Thank you again for letting us spend time with you!" she said. "Make sure to get lots of rest! I'll come back in a few days to check on you!"
"Of course," I said, letting go of the angel's embrace. "I'll stay in touch. Take care you too."
"As to you," Sera said, letting Emily out first. As I was about to close the front door, I suddenly heard the higher angel's voice called out to me.
"Oh! One more thing," Sera exclaimed, turning around. She leaned in towards my ear and whispered,
"As you know, there is one other resident who lives on this floor." She pointed at the door far down the hall behind her. "I'm sure you'll meet him soon. But if this person causes any issues, please let me know."
I would blink a few times, trying to look past her voluminous hair, and notice another door at the end of the hall. I hadn't realized it was there when we came out of the elevator. Looking back at her, I would raise an eyebrow, curious as to why she was whispering in the first place.
"Should I be concerned?" I asked, feeling wary.
"As of now, no," she replied, pulling away from me. "However, he can be quite pesky at times. In some ways, he is like an angel, much like yourself."
"Like me?" I asked, confused. "What do you mean?"
Sera let out a sigh and pointed her finger at my halo, which was glowing brightly and golden.
"I'll explain another time, but all you need to know that you are special, April. There isn't a lot of winners who has that kind fo status in heaven. Especially with a halo unique as yours."
Slowly walking away, she would look back. Giving me once last glance with a reassuring smile on her face. "Don't worry, you'll learn soon enough about how heaven works around here. Until then, get some sleep. I'll see you soon."
The moment I was about to ask another question, Sera nodded at Emily, and soon both the Seraphims disappeared out of my view. I let out an annoying sigh and brushed my hand through my hair, feeling confused about how cryptic Sera's last words were.
"I guess I'll say hi to my neighbor at some point," I said, as I retracted back into my new home and closed the door behind me.
After finally having the place to myself, I felt completely drained of all the social energy I had within me. The Seraphims had shown me around all day, and it was hard to catch a break from them.
I don't blame Emily for being a bit clingy since she seemed like a young adult at best. However, Sera was different. It felt like she was watching my every move, making sure that I was okay and worrying about every little thing that could go wrong. This was odd for an angel, given that we were in heaven where nothing can go wrong.
"God, this was a lot to take in today," I mumbled to myself, as I made my way back to the large living room. The bright lights suddenly dimmed down, as though they had a mind of their own, to make the atmosphere more comfortable for me. Chuckling to myself, I looked up and quickly surveyed the house.
"Let me guess, are you a magical being too?" I called out, seeing the lights flicker once in response. Realizing I had my answer, I found it entertaining to discover that not only did I have my own penthouse, but a living one at that."
"Can you do me a favour then sweetheart?" I called out, "Mind giving me a pair of pajamas? I think i'm going to stay here for the rest of the night."
As soon as I finished speaking, I saw a pair of red cotton silk pajamas before me. I lifted them up and saw that they were a button-up shirt with shorts. Red and gold strips glided along the fabric. The top had an open back, designed to accommodate my wings. I raised my eyebrow and looked up at the house, grinning from ear to ear.
"I've only been here for an hour and I already adore you," I exclaimed while changing into my night clothes. The lights flickered again, seemingly pleased with the compliment.
After changing, I folded my clothes and left them on the couch. As I walked around, I noticed a beautiful dotcom-style boom radio, the kind I used to listen to all the time when I was alive. I turned the knob and the box hummed to life, playing Ruth Etting's "I'll Get By."
I listened to the music, I nodded my head in approval and made my way to the kitchen, my stomach grumbling. I opened the fridge and saw that it was already stocked with all the ingredients I could ever need to make any meal I wanted.
As I realized that the angels had probably stocked up the ingredients, I started gathering everything I needed to make the first meal that came to mind.
"Rice, Okra, Chicken, Shrimp...what the heck, they even have andouille sausage? That's insane," I said to myself while bringing all the ingredients together.
With everything set up on the kitchen island, I started putting the meal together, my hands moving on their own. As I closed my eyes, I felt myself starting to daydream, and voices in my head started to talk, causing the memory to come to life.
"I'm home, Lovebug!" I called out, leaning against the door frame and taking in the delicious aroma of food cooking in the air. "What are you up to?"
"Ah, welcome home, darling!" a voice responded. " Come sit at the dinner table. The food is almost ready!"
I blinked a few times, tilted my head to the side, and hung up my coat. "Are you sure you don't need any help? I can quickly change and assist you in the kitchen."
"No need my dear," the voice said, "I'm almost done anyway! Please just sit down, I'm ecstatic for you to give it a try."
Playfully rolling my eyes, I didn't want to interrupt the man as he spoke. I quickly went upstairs to change into something more comfortable from my work clothes.
Stripping down, I would quickly change into a pair of comfortable skirt and a t-shirt. Slipping on a pair of red slippers, I would start to make my way downstairs. The fragrance in the air becoming more and more delicious. Making my mouth water from the smell.
"Oh my goodness, this smells amazing!" I exclaimed, smelling the delicious food in the air.
As I stepped into the dining room, I saw a mysterious man placing a ceramic pot on the table. The lid was covering up something heavenly. Looking up towards him, I watched as he began to set the table. It was interesting to observe him doing it, as I was usually the one who did it. He arranged everything - plates, cutlery, even the wine glass. Raising an eyebrow, I couldn't help but smirk at him.
"Lovebug, what's the occasion?" I asked. "Did I miss something? Oh goodness, is there an anniversary I forgot again?!" I exclaimed, starting to panic a little bit. I had completely forgotten about our third marriage anniversary due to work.
"Darling, you're safe this time," he teased, giving me a small kiss on the cheek before taking his seat across from me. "I'm just in a really good mood. I know how hard you've been working with your new job, so I decided to make my late mother's dish!"
"Mama A's dish?!" I exclaimed, getting excited. " It's been so long since we had her food. What are we eating today?"
As I suddenly changed my demeanour, he chuckled at my childish behaviour. He decided to be dramatic and twirled his hands out as though he was about to perform a magic trick.
"I present to you the meanest, yet most delicious dish Mama A's has ever made - Jambalaya!"
The moment the food was placed in front of mel; I looked down at the dish and my mouth instantly watered. I watched as my husband took my plate and started to load it up with the ingredients; rice, meat, and vegetables, along with many spices to complete the dish. My stomach grumbled with excitement as I couldn't help but squeal in delight. I jumped out of my seat and ran over to my husband, hugging him from behind and planting a kiss on the side of his cheek.
"Thank you so much, sweetheart! It's been so long since we ate this!"
"I figured you would appreciate this," he said, blushing slightly with embarrassment. "Now, get back to your seat! We don't want this lovely meal to get cold."
"Yes, sir," I saluted, running back to my seat. As I sat down, I watched him pour the wine into my glass and his own. We smiled at each other and raised our glasses in a toast.
"Thank you for the meal!" we exclaimed, taking a sip of wine and wasting no time digging into the delicious food. I never forgot the first time I had ever eaten his homemade meal.
Looking up from my meal, my gaze fell upon a man who began to eat his food. Unfortunately, I couldn't make out his features as they were all a blur. However, there was one distinct feature that caught my attention, causing me to blush - his smile. That particular part of him always managed to make my heart skip a beat.
As the scene ended, I slowly opened my eyes. Blinking a few times, I would touch my cheek and felt a wet spot against my skin. Blinking a few times in confusion.
Am I crying?
~Let's say goodbye with a smile, dear
Just for a while dear we must part
Don't let this parting upset you
I'll not forget you, sweetheart
As if on cue, the song on the radio changed to Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again".
~We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
As I look around, I see that I am standing in front of the cooked meal that I made - jambalaya. Suddenly, a memory hits me and I realize that the last time I had this dish was with someone special. With each bite, tears roll down my face and I struggle to hold back my emotions. I don't want to fall apart again.
~Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies chase those dark clouds far away
"Damn, I forgot how powerful this meal can be." I mumbled, eating through the tears as I'm trying to stay strong, "But…who was that? Why couldn't I make out his face?"
I realized that there was another mystery to solve, but I just didn't feel like looking into it at the moment. Perhaps it was just a memory from when I was alive. It seemed unlikely, but maybe it was someone else's memories invading my mind.
When I close my eyes, I start to remember the people in my life who are alive and meant a lot to me, such as my old teammates, family, and friends. Therefore, it's unlikely that a random memory would suddenly come to mind.
"I can't believe it," I whispered to myself. "I remember everyone else, but why is this guy just a blur?"
Not wanting to dwell on it any longer, I decided to finish my meal and call it a night. I placed everything in the sink, going through my nightly routine like I used to before passing away. After finishing up, I wasn't in the mood to search for the master bedroom, so I settled for sleeping downstairs on the couch for the night. As I walked, I tried to push the memory of the mysterious man out of my mind.
~And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That as I saw you go
You were singing this song
I walked over to the couch again and picked up a warm blanket and some pillows I found in the linen closet. I prepared the couch for the night and laid down, facing the sky. I snuggled into the warm blanket and enjoyed the view for a while.
Suddenly, I felt a small metal sensation on my left hand. I pulled my hand out of the blanket and saw a beautiful golden ring wrapped around my finger, which widened my eyes in surprise.
"How did this get here?" I asked myself, twirling the ring around my finger. The center of the ring was a white glittering stone that sparkled in the light.
~We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
As I was about to remove the ring, a sudden thought of the mystery man's smile popped up in my mind again. When it appeared, I found myself hesitant to take the ring off, feeling like I shouldn't do it.
With a sigh, I made the decision to keep the ring on for the night. I'm not entirely sure why, but it just feels wrong to take it off. It's as if removing the ring would somehow change something. Which I'm not quite ready for just yet. Clicking my tongue in annoyance, I would lifted my hand up to examine the mysterious ring before me.
~And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That as I saw you go
You were singing this song
"I wonder if you were on my finger this entire time," I asked myself, looking at the glistening ring on my hand in the dark night. "It's strange, ever since I entered Heaven, I can't seem to remember you at all... I wonder why that is?"
As my headache returned, I decided not to dwell on it and put the thought behind me. Letting out a sigh, I pulled my hand back and snuggled deeper into my blankets. Despite their warmth, I still felt cold.
"Good night, whoever you are. Maybe I'll meet you in heaven one day," I whispered to myself as I closed my eyes, ready to drift off to sleep. The song played softly, lulling me into a peaceful state, until the final beats faded away.
~We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
