What in the name of fuck was going on…

(Cassius Asmodeus)

Apparently, having 12 years of memories unceremoniously dumped into your head was not the best way to wake up after having the strangest psychedelic trip of your life - who would have guessed? His name was certainly not Cassius a minute ago (not that he remembered what it actually was) and he most certainly had not fallen asleep in a king sized bed covered in glowing red runes.

Still, things could be much worse, he mused. His last memory was of a student showing up to the final exam he had assigned his class, only for him to pull a crossbow from his school bag and put a bolt through his head. However, even those thoughts were fading quickly, and he could feel the lingering cold of what he assumed were his old memories slowly turn into a pleasant warmth as his mind seemed to begin assimilating his new ones properly.

His name was Cassius Asmodeus, and he was the only child of Daimon Asmodeus and Rhaelyn Asmodeus nee Phoenix.

His current residence was a large castle that sat nestled on the edge of where a massive pillar of red stone connected to a cavernous pit that seemingly stretched forever downwards, in the middle of a wide wasteland of light red grass. The castle itself was made of massive dark gray stone slabs heavily warded to keep any uninvited guests from approaching or perceiving the location, with servants to see to his needs. The fortress had been gifted to him when he was born (or more accurately, gifted to his mother to keep in trust for him until he was older), which apparently was a customary luxury for any members of his family, of which there were currently eight, although only five had Asmodeus Blood.

His personal servants (distinguished from the common rabble who occupied the castle's outdoor settlement) numbered six in total and had been selected over the years by his mother and father. Most had two wings, and they served as servants and guards.

The first was Erman, his butler, who liked to slick back his white hair and was commonly dressed in a black suit. With impeccable manners he cut an appropriate figure, standing off to the side waiting to serve him. Erman had a good working knowledge of household spells, and while having two wings, he was only passable in battles of most sorts.

He had two maids, Vana and Esta. Vana was the youngest of the two, at only 16. With silky black hair and clever chocolate eyes, she was responsible for maintaining his wing of the castle, and helped clean and clothe him when he wished for it, which would often bring a smirk to her lips. Este was a pretty 17 year old, with ginger hair, full lips, and amber eyes that gleamed with a perpetually mischievous amusement, and was often the one to serve him meals. The two maids seemed rivals, as they both wished to be promoted to head maid whenever his personal household inevitably expanded.

Tolkas, his (very skilled) chef, by contrast to Erman had a deep love for physical combat. He was a tall and stocky devil, with a flowing golden beard, a bald head, and a love for grappling and unarmed combat above all other forms of fighting.

Vaire kept track of the library. A beautiful woman with hip-length braided blond hair, she was often draped in flowing cloth of red and black. She was a mage of some skill and had taught him much of mathematics and reading and the theoretical basis of magic when he was young. She was the only one of his servants to have some noble-devil blood in her ancestry, being the six times great grandchild of a half-demon bastard from the Raim family. And her four wings made her the highest ranking of his servants.

Lila, unlike the others, was a gift from his Grandfather, the Original Asmodeus, upon his seventh birthday. She had pale pink skin and silky smooth black hair, with the black horns atop her head telling of her demonic origins. She was gifted with a perfect body with a thin waist, tight ass, and large breasts. She was a virgin succubus only a year older than his own fifteen year old self, who had been raised by his family to slake his lusts when they eventually awoke.

While not overwhelmed, there was an unpleasant feeling accompanying the flood of strange memories, which had him rather on-edge.

He glanced past the curtains framing his bed, revealing a grand rectangular bedroom, with three stone steps separating the raised back-half of it, with his bed and dressers, from the lounge area located immediately upon entering the room. A large balcony split the well-furnished lower section in half, and the open door from which a howling wind could be heard suggested the reason that he may have been awoken.

He clumsily pulled himself to the edge of the bed before attempting to stand, which he managed, although somewhat unsteadily. Again, he could feel a warmth moving through his body, pushing away the cold awkwardness and replacing the stuttering control he had over his limbs with a deep grace and awareness which he was utterly unused to. He took a deep breath and felt a relaxed sense of satisfaction wash over him as he filled his lungs with air, before exhaling slowly.

Smoothly, and with a sort of callous grace he had not before possesed, he began his walk over to the large mirror he had seen previously among the many dressers of the upper bedroom, and as he gazed upon his new form he could not quite help but let a smile glide through his lips.

He was tall - perhaps 6'2" - with straight light-blond hair, smooth ivory skin, and deep black and red eyes, all set on a beautiful face and lean body.

As he slowly moved from his mirror lower into the room, he had to ask himself: what in the world was he supposed to do now?

(Calix Paimon)

It had been quite some time since Calix Paimon was taken by surprise, but recent events had certainly managed to do just that.

Originally he had been something of an outcast within his family, as he had little taste for politics or the fancy parties which his parents liked to use to show off their families wealth and status. He had much more the heart and mind of a warrior, and he had grown strong because of it. With the rather recent acquisition of his third pair of wings his family had started to take notice, and they had, for a time, been rather fond of parading him around as a prodigious talent - after all, there was no trait too negative in the underworld if one had enough power to back it up.

As a relative loaner, the real turning point for his reputation had not happened until almost half a year later, when his father had invited him to attend the Satan's court as one of his guests. There he had met the young and enigmatic Prince Cassius Asmodeus, and been rather taken aback, at first. Most in the 6th layer of hell had heard of his beauty, but to see it for oneself was another thing entirely. He did not particularly fancy men, although his father (allegedly) had a taste for them, but there was something captivating in the Prince's demeanor. Something graceful, and callous. But evidently the Prince did not have any tender feelings for him, as the moment the court had broken into casual mingling, Prince Cassius had sought him out, and promptly challenged him to a duel with a sort of sadistic smirk which had set him on edge.

Still, he had trained his entire life for a moment like this, and he was not about to back down from such a blatant challenge. So he accepted... And lost.

The Prince was born with of a Mutated Phenex Flame. Where most members of the Phenex family could summon hellfire, command the wind, and regenerate their bodies at will - the Asmodeus Prince was even scarier. He had no talent for aeromancy, but he was possessed of Black Flame. Which was to say, every pyromancy spell he cast was infused with very potent necrotic energy, which was simply a bitch to deal with.

The simplest (though in plenty of cases the least efficient) way of dealing with magic was to overwrite it. Shields, curses, enchantments of various sorts, or offensive spells, were all easily chewed through by sufficiently powerful magic. Most books described this general process as 'spell matrix disruption' and specifically in combat as 'energy overriding'. It was a conceptually simple, yet ultimately flawed technique. Or to be more accurate - flawed for most people.

The sheer scale of power needed in order to apply such a technique was often so much greater than the obstacle that one wished to overcome that it was simply not practical for any but the most powerful entities to employ.

There were of course some exceptions to this general rule, the most prominent of which relied on the type of magic involved. Sufficiently powerful types of magic matchups, such as Holy magic against Devil and Demonic magic, the Leviathan Sea Serpent Magic against pyromancy, or the Beal Power of Destruction in general, all had a relatively easy time disrupting the magics they came into contact with, giving such beings an edge when magical energies clashed.

Always, there were levels to the game.

And as he had mentioned previously, the Black Flames (which were disruptive to basically anything non-necrotic) were a bitch to deal with, especially when combined with the Prince's regeneration (the flames of which were also black) and the accuracy and speed of the young Prince's spells.

Yes, he had been rather soundly defeated, but that had not discouraged him and he had asked that they spar again, the next time they crossed paths. To which the Prince had studied him for a moment - as though looking for something in him - before agreeing, apparently satisfied with whatever he had found.

They had become friends of sorts, and whenever the Prince was around he would make a point of testing his skills against him. A ritual which Cassius (who had asked him to use his first name in privat) seemed to quite enjoy, if the slightly deranged look we would sometimes get in his eyes were any indication.

He had tried to put together a strategy to beat Cassius, but had ultimately realized that he probably just needed more power to even stand a chance. Attrition was certainly not in the cards. The sheer amount of mana that his friend had at his command was staggering, which when combined with the almost unnatural speed with which it seemed to replenish, gave his training partner a practically endless supply of even his most powerful spells. The Phenex regeneration also made physical injuries incredibly momentary which made any hypothetical process of winning reliant on either a trap (of some sort), or an attack powerful enough to trigger the safety spells erected around the dueling stage in either a single blow, or a series of quick successive blows. Neither of which he had.

All in all, regardless of training defeats against Cassius, Calix was living a rather good life. He had power, a good friend, a family which valued him for his political connection, and a rather good excuse to spend his days training instead of talking - all thanks to Cassius.

But now. Now things would change. Because what had been discovered during Cassius' last few days at court was simply mind bending.

In all honesty, he could not wait to see what the future had in store for them.

(Cassius Asmodeus)

After some time spent rummaging through his memories in an attempt to uncover any plans that may already be in place, it occurred to him that the memories he received may have some issues. Specifically, they were only as organized as they were before his arrival, meaning that most things were a blurry mess which only grew more and more fractured and distorted the further back he tried to remember, with anything before his third birthday being mostly incomprehensible…

Still, he felt like he understood the gist of his life and whatever world he had found himself in.

There were nine layers of hell, each ruled by a Satan, with a number of Lords under them. His grandfather, the Lord of the house Asmodeus, was the Satan of the Sixth layer and ruled from the layers capital city of Asmoday.

The Lady of house Asmodeus was Nethema nee Paimon (the firstborn of the Original Paimon) a woman known for her extraordinary beauty (only enhanced by her family magic) and the extraordinary height of power she had reached, being solidly entrenched in the ultimate class, with eight wings to her name.

They in turn had two sons: Damaidosu, in the 12th century, and Daimon, in the 22nd century.

Damaidosu, who would go on to grow an astonishing 10 wings and reach what many believed to be the peak of ultimate class, would marry a high class devil by the name of Ariana, from the Barbatos family, whose family magic 'Power of Future' allowed her subconscious to view echoes of memories she had yet to experience - prophetic dreams and precognitive fighting instincts, in other words.

Damaidosu and Ariana would have a very politically active son in the 34th century, whom they would name Cressery, who inherited his mothers family magic - although he was not greatly gifted in its use.

Daimon, on the other hand, although not as powerful as his brother (but still astonishingly powerful - with 8 wings in the mid range of ultimate class) he had the unique benefit of finding trace remains of the Asmodeus family magic within his mana. This discovery, at a relatively young age would eventually bloom into an obsession, which culminated in his discovery that with the aid of Runes, he could create a facsimile of the true Asmodeus family magic. He learned to carve extensive runes into items before simply running his sheer mana through them, allowing the traces in his mana to power the spell matrix, which allowed him to cast basic slave magic enchantments, even if it was a slow and tedious affair. This magical phenomena would be coined 'proto-familial enchanting'.

Daimon would go on to marry Rhaelyn Phoenix after she saved him from an assassination attempt. She, much like him, was an academic, and many opposed their marriage originally because of the age and power gap (she was only a two hundred year old, four winged devil), but upon bearing a child with mutated Phoenix clan magic only 17 years after their marriage, many quickly changed their tune.

He could only imagine that it would change further upon the recent revelations.

He himself was born in the 40th century and seemed to spend most of his very early life with his parents, traveling around with them wherever they went and mostly not being cognizant of events in general. When he was six, as was tradition, the servants that his parents had selected for him over the years were released into his company, and the castle which had been kept in trust for him was fully given to him also (apparently it had once been a safe-house of the Satan Asmodeus - warded by the Original Dentalion before his son killed him, and reinforced by countless spells of the Satan himself - which had been renovated into a more leisurely dwelling for him in the years before he received it).

In the following years he would spend most of his time in the castle, reading, playing chess, practicing magic, or speaking with whatever family members happened to stop by. Whenever the Asmodeus Court was in session (which it usually was two or three months of the year) he would spend his days at the capital of the Sixth layer, Asmoday, watching for people who might make for good future allies and generally enjoying his status as a Prince of the Asmodeus House. Unfortunately, many of the Lordly houses would much rather wait until maturity before introducing their children to the court, to avoid embarrassment. Leading to many of the courtly dwellers being of a more advanced age and so tending to be nauseating cautious or only stiffly enthusiastic with him whenever they had interacted.

And so when another devil close to him in age finally showed up he had jumped on the opportunity. He had spent the entire feast subtly observing him before making the determination that he was the rather direct and unsubtle sort. He had also noticed the other boy's face brighten somewhat whenever the topic of the rating games were brought up. And with those two pieces of information in mind, he decided to shoot his shot straight, and simply walk up to the other boy - who was named Calix Paimon, he had learned from his father - and challenge him to a battle. In said battle, Calix had shown an impressive degree of skill and determined focus, and so when he was asked if they would fight again he saw no reason not to agree.

The other devil he had some success in befriending was Casper Palkia, who - while being almost three centuries older than himself - was a friendly acquaintance of his father after being one of the few devils to publicly support his decision to marry Rhealyn. Casper was prone to indulging him with anecdotes of his own training and providing him with insight into the political side of the court's discussions, and was rumored to be close to making the leap from high class to the fabled ultimate class.

His mother, for her part, took a very active part in his life. In part, no doubt, because her political prospects and influence depended largely on how powerful he would grow to become. And so she tutored and trained him from the first indication of his family magic in the ways of the Phenex.

His father was rather more laid back and traditional in his approach to the raising of devils, which was to say, ignore them until they reached adulthood (the point in a devils life when their eternal youth kicks in and they stop aging; usually sometime in the devil's late 20s) or until they become powerful enough that you can brag about them to other devils. Although the fact that his mother paid him so much attention and had such fantastic results while doing it seemed to have slowly made him pay more attention to him over time also.

This pattern continued for a number of years until three months ago, when - while being in a very bored mood - Calix offhandedly mentioned wanting to take a training trip to the fourth layer of Hell at some point in the future. Which, while initially quite the amusing suggestion to him, had made more and more sense the further he thought about it. He could visit his cousins in the Phenex household and even maybe stop by to meet the Satanic family ruling the layer also. And so, after letting his friend get over the initial surprise of his agreement, he had approached his father, who upon hearing their suggestion for a trip to the fourth had suggested that they stop by the Sitri semi annual chess event on their way there, in order for him to officially introduce himself to the world of strategy.

And so the trip was decided on and subsequently planned out (after notifying and getting the permission of the Gremory, Sitri, and Phenex families, of course. A process that was probably rife with politics he did not yet understand).

However, as they say, plans are fragile things, and life often dashes such expectations to the ground.

And so, two days before the planned departure, something incredible had happened. His Asmodeus family magic had awoken. And he had shown himself to possess the Eyes of Asmodeus. And with further testing, the Slave magic that his Grandfather was so well known for, also. Which was apparently why he was stuck in his castle until further notice…

Now, the true question remained, what was causing the itch he had just now noticed chewing at the edge of his consciousness, in a tucked away corner of his mind? There were three of them he realized... And why did it feel like he could tug them?

(Vaylin Palkia)

She would never have thought that she would ever be so excited that she couldn't repress the wide smile which had been plastered on her face for the last two hours, much to her sister's befuddlement and her mother's slightly visible worry.

A member of the Satan clans had shown a proclivity for their family magic. In general, magical inheritance within the Satanic families was very rare, with most descendants having only traces or partially inherited powers, the sole exception being the second son of the Satan King Lucifer - the Crown Prince Revan himself.

And now, of course, Cassius Asmodeus. Who had - seemingly by accident - sent half of the Satanic court collapsing into a lustful semi-trance one afternoon, after his mother had killed a particularly ambitious succubus slave who had tried to seduce him.

After which, the Original Asmodeus had promptly hidden him away from the world, before declaring the court disbanded for the season and leaving for the ninth hell in order to take care of politics and make sure that his grandson wouldn't be assassinated - or at least, that was what her father (who spent much of the year at the capital) had told her when she asked him.

There were six major families in service to the Asmodeus clan; Ageres, with their time magic; Paimon, with their ability to weave mind magic into speech and song; Palkia - her family - with their spatial magic; Ancalagon, with their ability to manipulate rock and gemstones; Marax, with their ability to summon steel whips and spears to strike at and ensnare their enemies; Raim, with their fire magic affinity; and finally Marchosias, who were gifted with pain magic.

In the sixth layer of hell, these families were the greatest in terms of wealth, influence, military strength, and the individual power of their members, save one. As strong as all of these families were, they could only dream of reaching the heights of the Asmodeus family; who's wealth was sustained by a ruthlessly enforced slave trade and the taxes from their ruling seat of Asmoday - one of the three megacities of the underworld, together with Lucifaad and Dis, each containing a population of easily over a billion devils each. Not to mention the truly titanic supply of mana their members all seemed born with, which they used to throw spells at all of their problems to ensure that they ceased existing.

The inheritance of the lordships was generally a rather messy business in the Sixth layer, as the title of Lord was generally only taken by force after the death of the previous ruler of the house (which was in line with the practices of the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Layers also). The strong rule. The weak serve. That was simply how things were done. The death of the Lord often meant civil war within the territory. (The Lower levels in contrast operated on a basis of Family Magic Premogenisis, or even just Premogenisis, much to the disgust of many of the more traditional devils).

The Satanic Houses were a different matter, of course, with the need for the approval of the Satan King before someone could ascend, the position of Crown Prince had been created, and was given to an individual with the Satan Lucifer's approval to attempt to take such a place if the opening presented itself.

And if her father was to be believed, this was the crux of the Original Asmodeus' trip to Lucifaad in the Ninth layer.

Prince Cassius' intellect was widely known, of course, and she had even caught some of the servants saying that he might be entering the world of chess sometime soon. And yet, for all of his renown and beauty her father claimed that he rarely spoke of himself or of his powers. And even his sparring partner was remarkably insular. Although if he regularly contended with people as strong as Calix Paimon (who was a high class devil with a supreme talent for the Steel Power of Marax) then the Prince must surely also be very strong.

Her Father always told her that she should try to marry someone strong, so that she could bring pride to herself and her family. And she had always agreed, with a (hidden) hot shiver down her back. Cassius was definitely strong. Perhaps even strong enough to be named Crown Prince of Asmodeus…

Which of course brought her back to her excitement, and the general trouble she was having in suppressing the cheshire grin she knew wanted to sneak its way into her already borderline electric expression.

(Vana, Maid of Cassius)

Within a devil household the status of a servant was determined primarily by their number of wings and the degree of their master's favor. Obedience and power, in other words. And for servants to be respected within a household, was the same as being respected outside it, also. Nobody wished to offend a powerful devil by accidentally acting against their favorite servant, after all.

The prospect of attaching themselves early to a powerful master was one of the reasons that so many young devils were happy to enter lifelong servitude. It was a chance for status and personal dignity in a world otherwise ruled by the whims of already established factions.

And now that it had become clear to the household just how powerful the young master was, and the young master's lust were beginning to awaken, there was a chance for an upheaval in the power structure, and with devils no doubt lining up to enter the service of the young prodigy, getting on top could come with many perks.

Now the only question was how to convince the master of her worth…

(Cassius Asmodeus)

Oh. So this is what happened when the itch at the back of his mind was pulled…

(Sona Sitri)

This was where she would one day find the one she would marry. In the halls of a chess chamber. No matter how much her father may wish to use her for his political games.

To devils, forcing one's child to marry was fine, but to force them to marry someone weaker than themselves was considerably less acceptable. Thus a tradition was formed, that if the child could best their partner in a domain of power (which used to be more open to interpretation but now really just amounted to the two fields of devil interest - chess and rating games) then the child should not be made to marry.

Which was rather nice for someone like herself, who happened to excel at one of those fields.

In fact, the standing she gained from her prowess had made her quite a desirable partner for many of the other devils around her, and a number of them (both of similar age and far greater) had challenged her to chess matches in the last few years, in the hopes of move her with their strength. She had not yet been impressed.

But perhaps this time would be different.

As standard as the tournament was, there was quite the excitement over the introduction of a new player in the form of Prince Cassius Asmodeus.

She was very excited to see how he would do.

Although it was called a tournament, the structure was more of a chess get-together for people to gather and test their strength against similarly ranked opponents, and improve their chess rating where they could. Introductions, however, were more official in structure, and generally focused on determining the new devil's strength.

During an official chess introduction, the devil would face someone of around 1000 rated skill. If they won their initial match then they would face opponents of progressively higher skill (about 200 points per match) until they eventually lost, with their elo set to the rating of the last enemy they defeated. Similarly, if their first match was lost, they would face opponents of progressively lesser skill (about 200 points per match also) until they eventually won, after which they would be given a rating equal to that of their defeated opponent.

She had been there to witness the introduction of Diodora Astaroth, who she had once thought to perhaps court. Unfortunately, she had been gravely disappointed, and he had only managed to earn a rating of 1423, losing a very close game to a 1600, which, while not bad, was certainly not that good either. And far below her own current - very respectable - 2567 rated gameplay.

With her sister, the Satan Sitri, recently telling her of the Asmodeus magic inheritance, she had to consider the fact that this might be a very tactically sound marriage for her, as it would both satisfy her parents, and satisfy her own love for chess.

If he was good enough at the game, of course!

(Cassius Asmodeus)

A list of tasks and rewards really asked more questions than it answered, he was sure. He could feel two more hooks in the back of his mind though, so perhaps he should pull them before speculating further…

***THE GAME OF CASSIUS ASMODEUS***

He almost crumpled to the ground from the spike of pain lancing through his brain as further knowledge flooded his awareness. He was a Gamer. Of some sort. With great power. And even greater potential.

He took a second to reorient himself. This certainly made the strange text he had seen before waking easier to decode.

With information pounding through his head he was suddenly aware of the ways in which his new condition functioned. It was was vague… frustratingly so. It was like reading a game manual without having anyone to explain or clarify how any of the systems functioned beyond the concise and formal definitions that were already provided. And yet, for the most part, he understood.

And so, with newfound confidence, he reached back into his mind to pull the final piece of information into his consciousness…

Name: Cassius Asmodeus

Age: 15 years

Title: Devil Prince of House Asmodeus

Alignment: True Evil

- Traits -

[ Six Winged Devil High Class (81%) ] –

A Devilish personality makes you tend towards Immorality, Corruption, and Dominance; this also makes you remorseless and dampens prosocial feelings like empathy and emotional attachments. You are naturally Sadistic and Lustful, and are rewarded with power for indulging in these sins.

As a Devil of the Asmodeus line you have massive stores of latent Devilish Mana.

A Devilish body provides you with a stronger, quicker, and more resilient form - which is unaging and immune to non magical sickness - while massively lowering your conception rate. Your six wings allow for quick and efficient flight.

As a devil you are weak to all things light and holy. Spells that protect against evil or demonic forces keep you at bay.

Your place as a biblical entity ensures that your words are translated into the preferred tongue of the listener and allows you to understand any non-magical speech or script.

- Perks -

[ Brimstone Furnace for Mana ]

Within your essence resides a great magical furnace, endlessly supplying a suffocating quantity of devilish mana to your magical core, which provides a ceaseless replenishment of high-potency energy for your spellcasting and abilities.

[ Asmodeus Clan Magic ]

You have access to the Asmodeus family circle, allowing for more efficient spellcasting. The 'Eyes of Asmodeus' allows you to invoke and manipulate the lust of anyone you gaze upon. This also allows you to use 'Slave' type magic in spellcasting. Your spell circles will glow with red-black light while casting magic, and your eyes will do the same if the magic is strong enough.

[ Necrotic Phenex Clan Magic ]

Your mutated Phenex clan magic allows you to summon and use 'Black Hellfire Pyromancy'. The 'Immortality' ability allows you to promptly regenerate from any injury, so long as you have the strength to endure it, and provides you with resistance against fire and necrotic energy - although you cannot regenerate from injuries caused by holy magic. A Phenex clan ritual allows you to produce the fabled Phoenix Tears, which is one of the few sources of healing available to devils.

[ Death Magic Affinity ]

As a former necromancer, necromantic skills are learned and advanced at a far quicker rate. Controlling undead constructs is far easier for you, and your aura is very pleasing for undead beings, calming spirits and other such creatures. Directly controlled undead generate weak necrotic energy which they can use to grow stronger. 'Soul trap' type magic can affect more powerful beings.

[ Overspilling Intellect ]

As a former university professor you learn skills quicker. The memory of a computer may be conceptualized as somewhat similar to a book, with a chapter index and blank pages to write things on. Whenever the computer wishes to remember something, it simply allocates the pages it will need to use by noting the page numbers in the chapter index and then proceeding to writing the new information into the allocated space, overwriting any previous data that might already be there.

Where things get interesting is how computers delete things. Instead of just scratching out the page when something is deleted, or overwriting it with gibberish, it simply removes the entry from the chapter index, labeling that space in memory as free, and when it needs to remember something else it overwrites the previous data that was there. This is how computers work - yes, even when the trashcan is emptied. Meaning that until that data is overwritten by something else, whatever was deleted still remains in existence…

Every world, of course, had a different mechanism for how souls were carried to the afterlife. Some are collected by agents in service of Death, to be judged and sentenced. Other souls are bound by tethers to the gods the mortals worshiped in life which are subsequently followed to ensure that the spirit ended up in the right place. Others simply dissipate into nothing.

In this world it was a river. Upon which a soul would float and bob along until the currents of the stream carried it up or down, to heaven or to hell. This river was once presided over by the Archangel of Death. It was never clear to the other Angels why this role was needed, never had this system once failed to carry its passengers to their deserved afterlife, and this had not changed after the Archangel's imprisonment. Perhaps if they witnessed the events unfolding, they would understand.

… Irreverent, a mass of light was tearing through some unseeable dimension of the cosmos, a number of splintering pieces accompanying its silent journey, passing thousands of worlds and thousands of solar systems, when, unexpectedly, a resounding gong knocked the metaphorical wind out of its sails. It had struck something. Something that it was not supposed to. And as the sound of some horribly cascading shattering echoed through an otherworldly river, to be heard only by the chained guardian, it may perhaps occur to anyone watching, that computer systems should come with a manual for how to properly delete sensitive information.

AN:

I have not seen or read High School DxD and all of my knowledge comes from wiki browsing and other fanfictions - so if you see similarities to such stories as 'All in a Dream', 'Silly Songbird', 'Anomaly', 'dungeons and devils', along with all of the stories by TheDarkWolfShiro then that is why.

In fact, so much of this story is inspired by TheDarkWolfShiro that it may be more accurate to label this as being from the TheDarkWolfShiro fandom.

For those who haven't read the ending of the original 'A Gamers Guide to Necromancy' and the beginning of the sequel, the bonus probably didn't make much sense… but it is what it is.

I also want to give credit to two large inspirations for my writing: 'The Accidental Horcrux' and its sequel 'The Chrysalis' by The Imaginizer, which I followed for many years and are what originally made me start reading fanfiction in the first place.

AN 2:

If it wasn't clear from the writing, the political system in the top four layers (six, seven, eight, and nine) function less like a western democracy and more like a collection of feudal families. Each with their own network of soldiers, champions, and guards. Land is held by people with the strength to take and keep it, and the only real reason there is a central authority at all is because the most powerful people around (the Satans) said there should be. Authoritarian anarchy, in some queer way. You will learn more of the other layers in the next chapter, but they will be similar to this as well.

Also the Rating games are now 1 vs 1 combat. With group games being a special rule set that the fighters can agree on. Something like a mix of the UFC with the culture of medieval jousting and the power of magic.
